A great place to have drink and have great meal.Everything has alway been great here. The only thing to watch out for is some of the staff members that have been working there to long.iv been going  here for about ten years and the older staff act like there to cool for school.once I was double charged for my bill.defenantly go but keep an eye out for rude personnel.
Review Source:We had fish and chips as take-out; had to try purportedly Long Beach's #1 fish & chips. I guess they're better eaten at the location, and not taken home. While the food was okay, it wasn't what I'd deem #1.
The best part were the potato wedges ('chips') -- tasty and not greasy. But the main star, the fish... meh.
The fish itself was flavorful and tasted fresh, but there was too much loose (away from the fish) batter, and while flavorful, the amount of batter slightly detracted. Plus, all the fish didn't seem completely cooked (mostly raw batter) and holding too much frying grease.
I won't comment (my opinion) on the cole slaw, as it was much too sweet for my taste, though thankfully not soupy in sauce (my spouse liked it, hence I won't comment on the cole slaw further).
I would be willing to try this again, but this time eating there, not as take out, which might have detracted from the #1 status.
Always love coming here! Â Good food! Great portions! Â Great service! Â I read some comments of horrid service but I've been coming here for years and I've never had a bad experience.. EVER!! Â I'll admit sometimes the seating is a bit meh, but that's not going to ruin my experience.
Review Source:Wow. Seriously unbelievable experience today at the Pike Bar. My wife and I have been coming here for years and we're know by sight by some of the wait staff. Â Today we encountered a new waitress that we hadn't seen before. Â She was super rude and aggressive. Â What she is doing waiting on tables is a mystery to me. Â Here's my experience.
We walked in around 12:30pm this afternoon. Â Seated ourselves in the rear most booth. Â A waitress came up to us and asked us what we wanted to drink. Â My wife asked for a rum and coke, I asked for a Mexican coffee. Â The waitress looks at me and says "This is the Pike. Â I don't know what a Mexican coffee is. Â What do you want?" Â I was a bit stunned because she was very rude and was insinuating that my drink order was too fancy for the Pike. Â I then ordered a Keoki coffee, she said "I don't know what that is, why don't you decide while I go get the rum and coke." Â She left abruptly.
Now last week I was here at the Pike Bar and got a Keoki coffee. Â Most of the staff working there was the same, everyone, except this waitress. Â One of my favorite waitresses (I think her name is Natasha) was busy in the back accepting a beer order I wish she had seen us because when I asked again for a Keoki coffee the new waitress became very aggressive raising her voice at me. Â Well that was enough my wife and I got up and left. Â On the way out I went up to the waitress and the bartender mystified that they were unwilling to make my drink order. Â As I left the new waitress yelled out sarcastically at me "see you".
Chris if you are reading this you should be warned that you are going to lose many regular customers with wait staff like this. Â Perhaps you don't care, you have plenty of business. Â Hey good for you, but you should fire this waitress sooner than later. Â She's a stocky white late 30s early 40s woman with straight dark hair.
For anyone else that reads this review be warned. Â Although the service and food here can be spotty its almost always fun and welcoming. Â Beware of this waitress.
This is my spot. Â I go here so often it is ridiculous. Â I hate the food, but have literally eaten probably every single thing on the menu because I'm here so much being drunk and hungry. Â I have celebrated like every important event in my life at this bar. Â It's a super comfortable, friendly place with great atmosphere.
Review Source:Fuck this place, right in the ear.
Now I can't speak to the degree of their food as I have never tried it, but in my life I've been here about 10-15 times and none of those times has been enjoyable. A friend of mine used to like to come here as it was an easy place to get laid and I'd often tag along but in the end, it really deserves no stars. Why not? here's why not:
1. Temperature: This place has no AC so to say that the Pike in the summertime is hotter than two boars fucking on the sun would be an understatement. Factor in that much of the clientele are, well, "large and in charge" and it becomes rather fragrant in short order.
2. Service: Maybe the worst bartending staff I've ever dealt with, and bear in mind that nightlife is part of my job so that says something. The broads who work here are inattentive bitches with no work ethic that regularly make you wait 30 minutes on a half-full Saturday night for a single round. One of them tried to give me some attitude this one time for asking what the hold up was when there wasn't a large turnout. I may be a scholar and a gentleman (who also tips very well may I add), but I am not above hopping over the bar and giving that rude bitch the Ike Turner-style treatment she truly deserved. There's this other dickhead who works there with a bad attitude who thinks that his cheap unoriginal tattoos and constant scowl on his face makes him look like a real hardass when really, it doesn't make him look tough at all but rather like a fucking prick who can't do his job. Zero out of infinity.
3. Patrons: Before I get into this, I'd like to make the following statement lest anyone think it's the pot calling the kettle black. Yes, I am a man who has a lot of tattoos and am sleeved on both arms. Having said that, my stuff is all originals and I truly do love my skin based artwork. Most of the people here though, are the dickheads who get every shitty, unoriginal sailor Jerry tattoo you've ever seen because they wish to fit in to a certain social genre. You know who and which tattoos I mean. The blue bird. The anchor. The black panther with the claw marks. The topless ladies. Yeah well I've got news for you fuckheads, you're not "counterculture" or "punk rock" when you're intentionally trying to be part of a trend. In fact, it largely reminds me of the asshole club-like bars in places like Huntington Beach or the 909 and is essentially nothing more than insecure losers trying to compete with each other. That's about 75% of the patronage here. The other 25% are the unavoidable 4th street hipster shitheads. A bunch of malnourished eunuchs wearing berets. On my last visit, after a few beverages I actually shouted out "CHRIST, IS ANYBODY HERE AN INDIVIDUAL?". My response? I didn't get one. There's your answer.
In the end of this place still sounds like an alright spot to you despite my warning, knock yourself out. Just be sure to pack your cyanide.
Been here a few times & always order the fish & chips. Â The fish is great if you scarf it down right away because if you don't it turns into a mushy, rubbery mess. Â The chips are real good but the coleslaw tastes like mayo & nothing else. Â I always add malt vinegar to mine to give it some flavor. Â The only reason I gave it 3 stars is for their burgers. Â YUMMY! Â My daughters always order the burgers and like I said they are YUMMY! Â The juke box has a wide variety of music. Â The drinks are good. Â If I ever go back I won't order the fish and chips!
Review Source:I read the reviews and was looking forward to my order of fish and chips. The crisp golden batter was excellent, but it surrounded a mushy, overcooked mass of mush that I guess was supposed to be fish.
The bar itself was interesting, but nothing that I would return to or recommend to a friend.
There are too many other places that serve quality food and craft beer that deserve my patronage.
Been hearing about this place a lot from everyone who lives in LB. Finally got to check it out. It's loud and a very eclectic crowd. The bartender definitely put my debit card in her bra, and wasn't very attentive, but I don't blame her due to the fact it was loud and very busy. Â Drinks are not too expensive at all. Good times
Review Source:This place has GOT the HOOK UP, on amazing meals. Â After my Sunday morning work outs, biking and bass playing, I come here to unwind and take in the ambiance, that is THe Pike. The fish and chips is my favorite, among the competition, locally. Â Their selection of beverages is impeccable. There are some crowds, on the weekend, but bar staff, usually takes care of its clientele. Every item on the menu, I've sampled, is delectable and keeps me coming back, for more. Â Bike parking is plenty, vehicle parking is good-if you beat the rush. Since this place is walking distance from my BFF, I appreciate the location. It is LOng BEach vibe, with the coolness of a hideaway dive. The live music nights are mind-blowing. I've cut a rug or two, passing by. I love the bartenders, who are attentive to the lil gals, like me. Â :-)
Review Source:A friend and I came here on Easter Sunday (all the Irish bars were closed! ha ha), and found a surprisingly fun place. Â There is an air of dive bar about the place, but the atmosphere is anything but that. Â Lots of windows and enough light that you don't feel like you're in a cave. Â A pretty good selection of beers on tap and bottle. Â We started out with some guac/salsa and chips. Â A nice portion (not too big, not too small), but would suggest to the kitchen that you put the guac/salsa in bigger cups...not because I want more, but it was tough to scoop out of the small cups.
We both ordered tacos (mahi for me, shrimp for my friend). Â The fish was terrific (not fried) and just enough of everything on the taco to make it fabulous. Â Would definitely go back just for the food... not your typical pub grub! Â Customer service is good and I love that they don't hover ("How is everything tasting?" Â Hate that question... if I'm eating, then it's good!). Â When we were there they had a DJ in the corner spinning some great tunes.
This place seems like a bit of an edgy crapshoot. Â When we were there you had the large party of loud barely 21s, a family of four, and a host of regulars. Â Fun place that should definitely be on your "to do" list.
Everything and more a bar should have - good strong drinks, terrific food, great music (live & Jukebox), an eclectic hodge-podge of people, and don't forget the sailor-punk rock paraphernalia offering plenty of things to look at when you don't feel like talking!
Their fish and chips are the best in the land...and their burger is one of my favs also. I don't think I've ever tried something here I haven't liked (but I rarely stray from the fish & chips!)
Staff are always very attentive and friendly too...which can be hard to find when a place is so cool!
I loved this place. After moving to long beach from South Pasadena it's been a bit tough finding a fun spot to eat and have a good beer. A friend of our took my bf and I there and it was super busy. Even though it was busy we found a spot right away and our drinks and food came out right on time. Our waitress did forget to put in of our orders but totally made up for it with shots of this awesome cider flavored whiskey. It's hands down my new favorite place in long beach!
Review Source:Yes we brave souls brought a baby here!
Mama wanted something more eventful for St Patty's day. Somewhere we can get fish n chips and beer (Fish and chips may not be a traditional St Patty's day food but mama was craving it hehehehe) Dada found this place on Yelp, and decided that a drive to mama's old hood LBC should make it eventful enough. So we packed up the car with our baby girl onto the 4th street.
Well, we got there. Street parking pretty easy to find. Then when we were at the door it was loooooooooud. (So funny. If we didn't have a baby we would've said, hey cool music! instead. Agh, sad how parenthood changes you..) Like most baby parents, we were a bit intimidated, especially there was someone checking IDs at the door too. We asked if it is ok to bring a baby, and the nice guy at the door said it's fine, so we braved ourselves in, well.. to sit at an outdoor table (inside really was too loud) with heaters blasting on (double awesome!). They were really accommodating to make sure we were ok, with highchairs, special baby sized water and everything.
So to the food. After all mama wanted was a Guinness and fish and chips. So worth the trouble. May be it was a lil tiny bit doughy, but still awesome. Coleslaw was great too, and this is coming from someone who usually does not eat coleslaw. Fries were amazing. I love those thick cut fries that they serve. Hubby got some chicken wings and seemed to be enjoying his food. We also shared some lobster tacos, but they were a bit meh, especially the texture of the tortillas. But again, we came here for fish and chips and my food hit the spot. Ordered a guac for the baby and she was happy too.
Loved the vibe.here. I love the good ol LBC with down to earth crowd and relaxed atmosphere. Reminded me of those single days not giving a shit about anything and just enjoying life. It was kind of a breath of fresh air coming out here. A great place to come and hang out with friends over drinks and fried food!! I will definitely return when we need another night hangout.
Ok. So I tried it. What are my thoughts? Nothing special
I really don't have much to say. This place is very average. They do have a few good craft beers on tap and the food was good, but.....nothing special. Maybe I just don't get it?
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing bad about the place. However, there are plenty of spots that are much better than this place.
Although I can't remember the last time I actually ate here, I hail The Pike as my #1 late-night go-to when I'm cruising the streets of Long Beach (which I've been known to do). The Pike really captures that retro & raunchy essence of Long Beach, when The Pike was an area on the wrong side of the tracks, and girls teased their hair high, guys exposed their tattoos, and drag queens ran amuck... or so I've heard the re-telling by my parents who spent their youth sneaking out of the house and going to The Pike (area) in the middle of the night.
The restaurant is only slightly more tame. There's still the teased bee-hives of servers behind the 50s diner counter, but instead of young biker dudes with slick backed hair and tattoos, its usually the local lezzie scene sporting their latest. Drinks and loud live Rockabilly music create a raucous scene, one that often leads to someone getting thrown out for misbehavior, the occasional sidewalk fire (its totally happened), and too often-- a sidewalk gracing by police.
I think it's safe to say that The Pike is my favorite place in Long Beach.
The food is great and reasonably priced, cheap drinks, and the jukebox has an amazing selection.
I could eat a plate of their fries as my meal. So crispy and delicious!
It can get pretty crowded at night (it is a bar after all), but I mostly go on the weekends at lunch time and always get a table and find a spot in their parking lot.
There's something about being near the beach that makes me want seafood. Be it that we're not very familar with the eateries in Long Beach, we went to Yelp. Katie B, the Elite event manager, gave this place a great review so I knew we had to try it.
Upon downloading the menu, we saw that their fish and chips were award winning and had to try them. They were so fresh, tasty and just mind blowing. So delicious. The tartar sauce was everything! We liked the place so much, we came back later with our friends who met us on the beach. They love the fish and chips too. We got drinks ,guacamole and chips the next rip. The wait staff were great both times. We sat outside the first visit and were waited on by the tall guy with the blond tips. I had to admit I was relieved to see someone with tattoos and piercings. It showed me this place wasn't pretentious, just about service and good food. We were waited on by 2 ladies the second time because they changed shifts...still very nice. It was super busy and we weren't ignored. Good look.
Whenever I come to the LBC, Pike Bar and Grill is on my list...if it's a cheat day!!
I am glad so many people have had great experiences here but I need to make sure I throw this out there for Internet world so that other people know both sides. I have been there many times, I live very close by, and have never ever had a good experience. As food goes, it really is sub-par. The seafood seems frozen, dry and flavorless. Burgers might be good, but it's pretty hard to do a burger wrong. I expect a restaurant to be able to cook better then I can.
As for the Bar.
My husband and I have waited for a good 30 minutes to be served many times. To say it's a hipster bar is a understatement. Last time I was there (on my birthday) it was so crowded I couldn't breath and one of the hispters actually took out a knife (because he was trying to cut a rope off my wrist without my permission ?!?!) and cut my hand with it. My friends and I were appalled and upset. We went to the bouncer to tell him that someone had wielded a knife AND cut me, and asked for a first aid kit, to which he told me he couldn't help me.
I dont care if this is the hipest bar in the world. I will never go back there again.
This place is super rad. It's full of hipsters, but not in the self-aware pretentious hipster way. It's just full of cool people minding their own business trying to get a drink with their friends. No eyes of judgements, no cultural performance.
Drinks are also very very fairly priced; I was so pleasantly surprised when I got my bill!
The picnic tables are a great touch, too. A great vibe all around. It's obviously a dive bar, but the kind of dive bar you absolutely love, as all good dive bars should be.
Hey, ya can't go wrong with a night at The Pike Bar.
This is definitely a local favorite and I happen to love this spot.
It's really fun to grab a brew with a buddy or with a large group of friends.
I've had really mellow nights here and wild nights where everyone, literally, everyone is getting down to some good live music. Friendly staff and unpretentious beautiful faces, everywhere. People are just here to chill.
Oh let me just be clear, The Pike may very well be the biggest hipster watering hole in the LBC. If you are over 30 then you are clearly over-the-hill at this place or an over-the-hill hipster. That being said, I am guilty of being a regular here and yes I am over 30. But let me be clear, I go here mainly out of convenience because I live two blocks away. Oh yeah, and the cheap, stiff drinks help too.
Pros: Cheap and if you like your music from the more rock'n'roll and punk spectrum then you will love this place. There is also a corner in the back for us old folks over 30.
Cons: The under-25 hipsters, music that can be too loud, crowded weekends, and unfriendly bartenders.
That being said, I will be back. Very difficult to stay away when it is within walking distance from where you live.
I really love this place. Good mix of people, cheap enough drinks, efficient bartenders (nevermind friendly, I'd rather you just get me my damn drink quickly). Lots of seating outside on the patio, DJ on Saturday evenings, seating inside and they serve food late. We arrived at like 11pm on a Saturday and the kitchen was still open. My friend ordered a pesto/chicken pasta dish and we were both shocked at how good it was...not typical bar food at all.
We walked by on Sunday and they didn't look open which is weird because it seems like this would be a great spot to watch football and day drink...maybe we were just too early.
Definitely come here as part of your 4th st drinking experience.
This place has so many functions and it seriously rocks all of them.
- Restaurant: it has some great food. Fish and chips, potato wedges (SO GOOD), tacos. Make sure you don't try and eat here too late otherwise you will be battling the bar crowd. The other night I was there around 10:00pm and I saw two guys trying to have a romantic meal... it was crazy loud, dark, and crowded. Bad idea on their part.
- Bar: Great local spot. They have a limited beer selection for my taste, but for a late night group hang out spot it is acceptable. Decent prices and loud music (sometimes live). They also have a nice patio area to escape the noise and get some fresh smoke-tinged air.
Beware: if you are a clean freak this ain't your spot. The bathrooms are dingy for sure and it has that old-boat vibe going on throughout the restaurant so it isn't sparkling and shiny to say the least. I just trust that they have spectacular health standards that rise above the sticky exterior.
I came here on Saturday for lunch, slightly unwilling because I've never enjoyed it at night. I say that because it's always packed at night and I'm only 4'11'' and I can never make my way to the bar. It always feels like "college night" or something too. Just a bunch of snobby hip kids pretending to like a dive bar. Also, I came here once and there was a band playing and they were covering a Beatles song and I ran out. You can say I'm not a Beatles fan. Maybe I've just been there on bad nights or something, I'll give it another chance next time I'm bar crawling on 4th.
Ok, enough of that.
Saturday rolled around and my boyfriend and I were halloween shopping around 4th st. and I was getting hungry. He suggested The Pike saying that, "their onion rings are amazing." I do like onion rings...I thought about it for a bit and said fine. Our waiter was really nice, a little scatter brained (forgetting what we ordered, bringing the wrong food over and forgetting the water we asked for twice) but hey, everyone has their days and I'm not faulting him for it. My boyfriend got the french dip which he said was ok. And I got the grilled cheese (which was ok) but sub onion rings for fries (a $2.95 charge for that but holy shit it was worth it.) The onion rings were to die for!!!!! I watched that down with a Cherry Bomb Cider which was delicious. I'd come back for lunch for the onion rings.
Before I start, I see that some people actually tried reviewing the food and service for this place. Dude, just get out. It's a dive bar. You know when's the best time to order food here? When you're drunk.
I don't know why I like this place. I can't hear my friends, and I tend to lose my voice after I spend a night here. What I do love, though, are the strong drinks. Plus, there's an Asian bartender who rarely works here, but it only took me once to fall in love with her. What can I say, I'm a hopeless romantic. For real, though, shorty is dope.
Don't take this joint too seriously, or else you won't have a great time. Yeah, the hipsters and douches can take over time-to-time, but just ignore or punk them and you'll be fine. A true dive bar that became my second home when I went to CSULB.
before reading this review realize that I am totally biased towards loving this place... Lauren and Melissa are awesome and totally welcoming! Â I have been coming here for years now and I definitely feel welcome when I come in here....
The crowd had for sure changed over the past few years (gravitating towards a douchy crowd) but you just gotta weather thru that... plus when it gets way too bad, just walk down to the V Room...
OH! and the food! Â THE FOOD! Â I love the food here... I am especially a fan of the Wilde Child Pasta! ... if you havent tried it yet, you gotta try it! Â creamy pesto sauce, sun dried tomatos, and chicken...
Anyways, I love this place. Â Thanks Pike for all of the good times!
Oh man, my stomach hurts so badly right now. I just came from eating at the Pike.
I had a "burger", an elongated patty of ground beef on a hoagie bun...maybe they ran out of hamburger buns?
It was 4:30 in the afternoon but already the music was so loud I had to shout to tell the server I was going to eat outside. I would've left, louds bars early in the day aren't my thing, but it was the only place purported to serve a decent burger within walking distance, and damn I wanted one! It wasn't decent, in case you're wondering.
Most importantly, my gut is in wrenching, stabbing pain right now. Something was not right with my food. I have an iron stomach, I can handle most things--but this wasn't one of them. Maybe it's the kind or amount of oil they used for their fries?
All in all, "meh" for service and atmosphere and "groan" for food quality.
If you come here, stick to drinks.
Review of the night scene:
Affordable drinks. Nice. A grey goose vodka tonic for $7 is pretty good. Â
Local crowd.
Friendly people.
My only problem is that this place is SUPER SMALL AND PACKED. People are spilling out into the streets to hang out. There was also no air conditioning. We're talking musky and sweaty bodies touching each other.
I'd come out here to hang with a group of friends, meet up.Prefer to choose another place to meet people.
Caveat: one visit only.
The pluses:
- Friendly bouncer
- Food looked decent and people seemed to enjoy it (but we didn't eat.)
- Music was decent.
- Patio is cool.
The minuses:
- The whole place smelled of grease. Â Kind of like McDonalds.
- Crowd wasn't friendly or particularly interesting (seemed kind of homogenous)
- Not enough bartenders for a Saturday night. Â Took forever to get a drink.
Verdict: It reminded me of the Shore House on 2nd Street for some reason. Â Weirdly lit and kind of depressing to me. Â The Shore House is primarily a restaurant (with mediocre food/large portions) that also serves drinks. Â The Pike seemed to flip that dynamic by being primarily a bar that also serves large portions of food (but it appeared to be better quality than the Shore House.) Â If you're on 4th and hungry, it's a good stop. Â Otherwise, I might or might not stop in again.
There is literally nothing, and I mean NOTHING, on the menu at The Pike that I don't like. Â Everything is good! Â
1. Â Fish and Chips - Check
2. Â Lobster Tacos - Check
3. Â Potato Wedge fries (with Ranch please) - Check
4. Â Portobello Hamburger - Check and Check
Cold beer, flowing whiskey, nice staff - Triple Check
The only thing that I don't like about this place is that it can get super crowded. Â And the crowd can be heavy hipster status. Â But really, so is the majority of Long Beach. Â On nights when the live bands come in it can get kind of loud. Â But if you don't like it loud then take your ass home.
Love, love, love the pike!
