Quite impressed by what looks like a small little place in Hyde Parkfron the outside. A great place to go with friends, I had the Chicken Parmange, and others had Hawaiian Pizza. Was not impressed by the Cream if Chicken Soup, it had too much salt for a soup. Overall, good food and I will be back the next time I am in Hyde Park.
Review Source:I've ordered from Pizza Capri 3 times in the past week. They are really a Hyde Park staple, offering up pizzas, sandwiches/wraps, salads, pastas, and Italian entrees. Their Rotini Tuscany is delicious.
Easy of order and speed is what makes me default to them so often. You can order online for both regular delivery, and catering. The catering turn-around is pretty fast - I usually do it the day before, and have no problems. They were even very accommodating to me when I had to cancel a catering order, day of.
Granted, this isn't stellar fine dining or anything, but Pizza Capri does what it is supposed to well. Definitely don't make this a destination if you're not in the area, but this is a great go-to for those who live or work in Hyde Park.
One of the best restaurants in Hyde park. Dine in, take out or delivery Pizza Capri is a solid choice. Not necessarily impressive but solid.
Dine in: Atmosphere is casual yet elegant & romantic.
Take out or delivery can be slow but it's not the end of the world. IMO, the staff appears as though they aren't on top of their business in that regard. I recently ordered take out & had to wait 10 minutes for my order even though it was SITTING in the warmer already when I entered the restaurant. No excuses for that type of thing in my opinion.
Food: Pizza is good. The crust on the thin crust pizza is amazing. Personally, the cheese is a little too thick but that's more of a personal preference. I love the salads & the pasta is pretty good too.
Service (dine in) has always been solid too.
These guys cannot figure out how to manage delivery. I suppose the sit-down experience is fine -- I haven't been in there in years. But I do order delivery fairly often. Twice (in a row now) I have placed an order through grubhub and they delivered my food to the wrong address. Both times, the address on the grubhub receipt was correct, but simply reading the information on the notification they receive seems to be a bit out of their depth.
And so then you're compelled to complain to the manager (who is more than likely the person responsible for the error in the first place), and that's a totally miserable experience. I have had the displeasure of speaking with him far too many times, and seriously, I use grubhub so that I don't have to interact with people.
Meanwhile, the food is fine. Nothing to write home about, but yea, it's decent.
That said, even with the lack of decent delivery of any sort in Hyde Park, I won't order from them again without assurance that that manager is fired. He's just really not good at his job.
Came here on a double date with my bff and her boo. We were in the area looking for a good place to sit down, grab a bite to eat, and hang out. We ended up passing Capri and made a quick last minute decision to eat there. Her boo got the buffalo chicken pizza, she got some kinda of diablo shrimp pasta dish, and my boo and I shared the spinach ravioli. Everything looked good, and I believe it tasted as good as it looked. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food and the unusually good/ fresh water that was 20x better than tap that was brought to our table. I'd definitely return here so I can try the pizza next time. The only reason I'm giving this place 4/5 stars is because the service wasn't all that great, our waiter seemed to be a little preoccupied, even though the place wasn't that packed (towards the end of the night). Other than that, everything was great. Â Overall, we had a good dining experience.
Review Source:Their stuffed crust pizza is damn tasty. Â I thought nothing could top Giordanos and I still think that's the case, but this is a very close runner-up. Â And the ambiance here is much fancier than your run of the mill pizza joint, if you can appreciate that sort of thing. Â I'm not normally the kind of guy to fill up on bread while you're waiting for a big honkin' pizza, but the seasoned dipping oil served with the bread is shockingly delicious. Â Our waitress was ... how shall I put this ... clearly disinterested in her job. Â But otherwise a good experience all around.
Review Source:How NOT to be a delivery guy!!!!
1. Don't call the customer with loud rap music playing in the background.
2. Don't ask the customer to meet you at the car.
3.Dont forget some of the food items, check your orders before you leave the store.
4. Don't tell the customer that you dint have change and then pull out a wad of ones.
5. Don't EVER say "you dont want any change back right."
6.Dont call your coworkers on the customers porch Screaming because they messed up the order!!!!!!!!
7. A Smile, honesty, and good customer service goes a Long way!
This was my experience. It was terrible.
Starting with the ambiance, I would say it's quaint, quiet and quintessential for dining out. In the heart of Hyde Park, I have enjoyed many great meals here, each designed to fill your stomach to capacity.  I would say that I have even tried to fillup on the bread before my meal had even arrived.  Olive oil for dipping is my preference for the fresh baked bread. I definitely have my favorites.  Creamy garlic sauce over fettucini with  choice of chicken or shrimp, which I interchange incessantly.  Of course with the word pizza as its moniker, you cant go wrong with their array of toppings. Sandwiches, wraps, and my favorite, desserts!!  Tiramisu? Fantastic.  Flourless Chocolate Cake?? One of the best! For a modest price range, the portions are ostentatious. Make it a must if you decide to venture down the 53rd Street Boulevard. Pick-up and delivery are also optional.
Review Source:Tried this place for the second time and overall was satisfied, but not impressed.
The service was really good. Â
The food was also good, but nothing that would warrant a special trip or a rave to a friend. Â If you are in the area, and want Italian, it works! Â
I'd gone here years ago, and apparently it didn't stick out to me as a "must have" back then.
Very nice little place with a nice variety of menu choices. Extremely attentive service; our waiter was quick and on the ball and there was a gentleman whose sole job was bussing and refilling drinks. The olive oil on the tables is scrumptious; the flavor is amazing. It caused me to eat much more bread than I'd planned! Pizzas were flavorful and perfectly cooked.
Review Source:This pizza was A-OK . It wasn't amazing. We had the "Thai Pie", a pizza with some peanut-thai-something sauce, bean sprouts, carrots, some sort of cheese, and chicken. It was good and filling, and made for a nice meal the next day. But it wasn't particularly amazing.
The service was really great, and they gave us free bread. Mozzarella sticks were okay. Everything was just okay. It's kind of pricey for being just okay (at least the pizza). So if you want something that's just okay, come here. IT will be an okay meal.
Things took a turn for the worse when I didn't order a drink with alcohol in it!
The wife and I had a hankering for some pizza and we were close by to Pizza Capri. After searching 30 minutes for a parking spot in this busy area,we were seated quickly by our super friendly waiter... super friendly that was until we didn't order a drink!
It was like a switch got shut off and immediately he turned into a pretentious jerk that only came back to our table to begrudgingly deliver our order.
I think he was counting on that extra tip money that would come from us drinking the night away.
The Food:
The Grecian salad was really good! It had nice greens, plenty of tangy chevre, and a tasty mustard based vinaigrette.
The pepperoni and mushroom pizza on the other hand was under cooked and the sauce was pretty "meh'. I found the crust to be no better than the frozen Home Run Inn pizza's I can get from the grocers. The wife and I were very unimpressed by their pizza.
Ok I love you guys and I'm actually shocked that haven't written a review before this one. This is one of my favorite places to come and get not only pizza but just the food in general. Max the owner of the Pizza Capris in Chicago use to manage the Giordanos in Hyde Park when I was a kids. He took what they were doing when they were doing good pizza and improved on it.
With that being said your standards... somethings gone astray here as of lately the portions have gotten skimpy and why in the world are you putting red pepper flake all over everything burning the back of my throat and making my stomach hurt.. I ordered the Roma calamari and a dish they no longer have on the menu that is usually amazing Adriatica. Both of these dishes were drenched in red pepper flake. they dont need to do that because they taste good with out the flakes and the sculding burn in my mouth.
Oh, it's good enough, I guess. Â But the thin crust greek isn't nearly as good as its close cousin at Chicago's Pizza. Â The fresh tomatoes throw off too much juice, and makes the crust soggy vs the sun-dried tomatoes used at Chicago's. Â Same for the shrimp and pesto one - very similar, but not the winner in comparison. Â Got the fancy veggie one last time, with the roasted eggplant and was no kind of fan. Â Ended up feeding the tomatoes and the eggplant to the dog and eating the remainder. Â
Above is based on delivery service only.
So I've only had Pizza Capri from  ordering out before actually dining there...usually varieties of their specialty pies so have to give a shout out to the veggie delite and the thai chicken pie which although i've never tried, my fellow board members will always get because they delight in it.
However, when I actually went to the restaurant with my family over winter break I was sorely disappointed. The pizza we ordered, Almost Gourmet wasn't cooked all the way? And was a lot smaller than we anticipated. The pasta was also kind of greasy and the waitress gave me chicken even when I asked for it not to be in it.
So my recommendation is to order out rather than dining in.
Pizza Capri has the best deep dish pizza! The crust and cheese is so delicious, the right amount of sauce - everything is perfect about their pizza! We've ordered the pizza take out about 15 times and we have only had a bad experience once (the ingredients were messed up but they corrected this and gave us free cheesecake). Â
Dining in is nice too, I would go just for the olive oil and bread! Whatever they put in the olive oil is amazing. The servers are attentive and they have a lot of great menu options. I have been satisfied with every entree I've tried. Good wine selection too!
Years have passed since I last went to Pizza Capri. During days long gone, I used to order any one of their specialty pizza and was always satisfied thoroughly when I did. Recently took a high school classmate to Pizza Capri and I tried the shrimp arrabbiata. Hello, lover! While the arrabbiata was not as spicy as I usually would have it, the flavours were perfect and the shrimp was plump.
Great service, great food, and a nice price considering how much food my classmate and I ordered, I would say that Pizza Capri retained the charm that kept me coming back years ago. Bravo.
This place is cute except for the paper table clothes, YUCK!
My server was very attentive, but he kept sneaking and drinking alcoholic beverages behind the bar when he thought we weren't looking.
Other than that, the food was great. The olive oil & herbs were AMAZZINGG!!!!
Try this spot
Hands down one of the best (if not the best) restaurants in Hyde Park. Their selection of food is varied but not too overwhelming. I've enjoyed almost every dish that I've ordered and never had any issues with the staff. Not only that but the overall atmosphere of the restaurant is welcoming and adds immensely to the dining experience. Although I don't drink the wine much others have enjoyed it, and I think their beer selection is good as well. Sometimes the prices can be a bit much, but then again you can see into the kitchen and so you know you're not getting something quickly reheated.
Certainly recommended if you're coming into Hyde Park and looking for a somewhat upscale dining experience without the actual upscale prices or atmosphere. It can get busy sometimes so be prepared for a wait if there's a large group.
gluten free pasta!!!
I just wish
they'd change
the tablecloths
under
the paper ones. ew.
Ate here twice. Each time service was good, but afterwards I felt like everything hadn't been worth the total of the bill. Like it wasn't good enough for the money. Now I drive to Little Italy and go to Franchesca's. Or we go to The Sit Down.
Breakfast & brunch is served here on the weekends...
I was getting a haircut @ Hyde Park Barber Studio and realized I was hungry. I wanted something egg based and could not think of another place that served breakfast in the area other than the original Pancake House and I did not want to go there. I asked my barber and he told me Pizza Capri could fulfill my request. After my haircut, I drove over and luckily found a parking space that did not require me to pay a fare box.
Walked in and told the host I heard they served a good breakfast so he handed me the menu. The veggie omelet immediately caught my eye. It had broccoli, mushrooms, cheese and asparagus and of course I got the egg white version. The meal came with wheat toast and home fries...yum! Drove my ass home to Lincoln Park and devoured the dish. Really good and it was still warm! I definitely want to go there and sit down and eat, but today wasn't the day. I actually would like to try some of their pizza at some point actually. I heard its pretty good
This place just has solid (unimaginative, but tasty) Italian-American food. A bit overpriced in my opinion, but it's consistent- they have a few items on the menu that are really good, and the pizza is always really fresh and delicious.
The manager seems to genuinely care about the customers- whenever there's a wait (and the past few times I've been at dinner, there was a 15-20 minute wait, which is reasonable) he brings out a pizza and serves it to those waiting for a table. The little touches like that really make me feel like I'm a valued customer.
I've never been to the other Pizza Capri locations, but this one is pretty great. Definitely worth stopping by for a solid weeknight dinner (or order the pizza- you will not be disappointed).
This review concerns only their service for large catered orders.
I frequently helped order food for student events at the University of Chicago. For catered food, I believe that Pizza Capri is strictly inferior to Giordano's, which should be reopening soon. I recommend against Pizza Capri: if you want more expensive gourmet pizza for an event, call Giordano's (very competent at large 30+ pizza orders) or Edwardo's (for smaller orders).
Pizza Capri is some of the most expensive pizza you can buy, but in any sizable lunchtime order (10+ pizzas), they tend to arrive stale and dry. I'm not sure if this is the fault of delivery, or from preparation for their in-house lunch rush, but they can't seem to deliver a batch of decent pizzas at noon to save their lives.
They do offer one kickback though--literally. Large catered orders come with an un-invoiced bottle of wine. If you don't want the wine, you can contact Pizza Capri to get a small discount from your bill. If you're honest, this can save your organization like $20. If not--hey--this is Chicago.
I love Pizza Capri. Â Â
The choice is always between Pizza Capri and Medici. Â I like hanging out at Medici more, but I think the pizza at Pizza Capri is so much better.
The atmosphere at Pizza Capri is so odd. Â There are these really old fashioned lace curtains on the windows, and it's often a little dark. Â It doesn't seem like a place that had good food. Â Each time I bring a friend here I worry that this will be the time the food sucks, but Pizza Capri always stands up and gives us great food.
First of all, this place is very friendly to vegetarians, with several pizzas with interesting ingredients that are meat free. Â Most places just have a single veggie pizza and an option to pick your own toppings. Â But here they have the "Shroom" pizza, with three different kinds of mushrooms and chunks of gorgonzola, the "Zorba" with goat cheese and roasted red peppers, and a few others.
Their pizza is a bit on the salty side (like most pizza) but it's not too greasy, which is why I love it. Â I think they're a bit expensive (maybe $2 or $3), but at the end of the day I'm happy to pay a few more bucks for something that won't disappoint.
Their apps, and their grilled calamari in particular, are also great.
I've tried this place a few times over the years, and it's been consistently meh. Â During my latest trip, I ordered the BBQ Chicken Salad, since a Pizza Capri salad was new territory for me. Â How bad could it be?
I ordered the large, and it was large, but the giant bowl was filled with mostly lettuce. Â There were a couple of tablespoons of corn & black beans and tomato mixed in with the lettuce, but not nearly enough. Â Also included was one of those produce stickers that you would normally peel off of a tomato BEFORE slicing it. Â On top of the lettuce was a large portion of tender chicken strips (points for that), but it was doused in strong BBQ sauce. Â The flavor did not work well with the lettuce, corn, black beans, & tomato. Â In addition, the dressing included was Ranch. Â I read that on the menu and wondered about it, but figured that Pizza Capri knew what they were doing with that pairing & that maybe I had something to learn. Â Now I know better.
If you're hungry for good food, skip Pizza Capri and go down the block to Rajun Cajun (or to Giordano's when it reopens).
To be honest, I have never set foot inside Pizza Capri, but my roommate's parents order from here every Friday and sometimes they invite us over. Being a broke grad student, I am always happy to attend.
Their deep dish is really good, but I have never been that impressed with the thin crusted pizza's. Doesn't taste much better then a frozen pizza to me. Pizza Capri has some really excellent pasta dishes. My favorite is a pasta with salmon in a bechamel sauce. Apparently, if you are in the know, you can order things that aren't actually on the menu. I am not in the know, by my roommate's parents are.
Maybe someday I will actually visit the place itself. My roommate swears by them. She even wants them to cater her wedding. I say, as long as she doesn't serve the thin crust pizza, then guest will have to be rolled home.
When I order delivery from this place, they have the quick delivery... for Hyde Park. (Though they have forgotten items of my order at times.) And when you go to the restaurant, the inside is so warm, cosy, and surprisingly a LOT of seating. The wait staff is attentive, and the food yummy. Their pastas, seafood, and even pizzas are in generous portions. May favorite thing about dining in is the bread they bring you at your table when you are first seated. Not only is it good, but the Herb Infused Olive Oil that the waiter pours for you is the most addicting thing I've run across in quite a while. YUM! Go for yourself and see. In Hyde Park there are few places that are of quality- Pizza Capri is good QUALITY!
Beware that parking may be scarce. the best place is if you drive around back of the Starbucks acros sthe street, there's a huge lot there.
Lovely little spot in the middle of Hyde Park, though even better to order in from when you want a nice hearty meal and don't feel like cooking. I've had all of the appetizers, and they've never let me down. For an entree I'd recommend the gnocci or the chicken marsala. The tortellini is also good. I've never actually had pizza from here because the pasta and meat dishes are just so good! They lose a star on price--everything should cost about 10% less. It's just far too much to ask any Hyde Parker to pay. If we're in the mood to spend money on food, we'll just go downtown.
However, when the weather is nice, they have outdoor seating, which makes this one of the few restaurants in Hyde Park that I can bring my dog to. We don't have enough sidewalk cafes in HP, so thumbs up on that.
I've just reviewed about 12 pizza places and I'm hungry for some...but tonight I'm in the Hyde Park area, where pizza options seem to be few and far between. Well, I'm trying to lay off the carbs anyway so that's probably for the best. But I digress.
Someone said Pizza Capri is really a great place. Ah...I was lied to. I liked the fact that I could order online but there wasn't much of a benefit to that because I needed to pretty much go through the whole ordering process all over again when I went to pick it up.
The mixed baby green salad was not good. The roasted pecans were kind of soggy, making me think they premake a bunch of salads and serve them up hours later. Not too fresh.
The pizza was an utter disappointment. I can barely remember it.
On the whole, don't bother.
What an absolute load of crap this place is from a service / value standpoint. Â I recently ordered from Capri for a small in-service presentation I gave at a Physician's office down on Michigan and 55th.
I ordered two "Family Size" pizza's which were in all actuality 16" (not v big for "family size", imo) and a Large pizza (which i downsized from a 'family size' but yet they still got it wrong on the bill). Â The Total for the THREE (3) pizza's ALONE = $71.45 !!!!! Â They then tacked a TEN ($10) DELIVERY CHARGE on top of that, without saying a word. Â The grand total, hold tight = $81.45 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for *3 pizza's* that's caahrraaaazy talk!
When I called to question the bill and delivery charge, the manager said that it was "catered" and that's why the delivery charge was $10. Â I told him that I only ordered 3 pizza's, it most certainly was NOT catered (which I never asked for it to be) as that would entail including plates, napkins, plastic utensils, etc.. and none of that was included. Â He said that this location is the 'catering' location and that's the charge for that area...at the end of it all, he credited my card $5 for the mistake on the wrong pizza size and called it a day. Â
What a fucking outrage, the delivery charge aside (as I was told that goes to the delivery driver and i'm all about that) but the cost of the 3 pizza's totaling over $70 is laughable.
They are open late; their food is good; their bread is AMAZING. Need I say more?
OK, I will. The boy was much happier with Pizza Capri than he was with Cholie's, because he is some sort of weird pizza snob, so he appreciated having the freedom to order something other than pizza (chicken marsala) while I ordered pizza (pizza). Apparently he liked his chicken. I wouldn't know how it was because I didn't try it because I was afraid it would taste like chicken, and I don't like chicken that tastes too much like chicken.
My pizza was good, though. It didn't change my life, but it was pretty darn good. The bread may have changed my life though, it was so so so good, and we kept eating it and eating it and eating it, and they will just refill it indefinitely for you if you don't tell them to STOP! So that was cool.
All in all, it was pretty expensive considering you could just go to Cholie's and get a couple slices for a buck seventy-five each, but the boy was much happier here, so... hurrah!
I don't actually like going to pizza capri. Â But, I really like ordering the food to take out.
All the window seats are rather drafty-why should I feel cold there no matter which season it is? Â Either they are on the edge of a parallel universe, which is entirely possible given the physics reasearch at the university, or they just have poor HVAC.
Either way, the pesto and shrimp pizza, or the potato and chicken pizza have my undying love. Â I haven't had great success with the pasta dishes. Â Stick with the variety of pizzas-although if you are looking for the "typical" sauce-cheese-topping stuff, go someplace else.
For an upscale pizza place...not bad. Â I really liked the different range of toppings on pizza (how about apples and onions?). Â And the pizza crust is crisp and delicious. Â It's not too oily, but deliciously baked!
I do like their pastas as well. Â Their spinach raviolis and penne bolognese are fantastic. Â Not the best, but they'll definitely satisfy hunger. Â They go well with the garlic bread. Â The price is decent for the food you're getting.
