The burger's really are delicious.   Small burger is fairly small, but filling.  Small fries are sharable, and delicious.  Only complaint is they don't advertise the prices of the beverages... and they are expensive.  Sodas are $2.75 and one of the beers is $8.00.

Poppy's is a very, very good burger joint. One of their finest ingredients is the bacon. It is a pricey topping for $2.50 but it is WELL worth it! This is no joking matter. The bacon is cooked to perfection, crispy but not burnt or crumbly. The smokey and naturally salted taste of the bacon accents its freshness and sends the burger to a whole new level. The beef quality is phenomenal and I personally enjoy the melted cheese to meat ratio here. The fries are great and they have glass-bottled coke, always a plus!

Poppy's is a fun, no-nonsense place to get a burger (or a veggie burger).  The fries are good and the portions are beyond generous.  The falafel is very good, and my husband really enjoyed the Sloppy Joe sliders.  There is a good variety of drinks.  We found the prices very reasonable for organic ingredients and delicious food.

I went there after 3 hours hiking in Breakneck Ridge.

The meat was very juicy, and I must say: there is a difference between happy cow meat vs sad cow meat!  All of their burgers are made with free ranged beef.

The bun was a little too thick for me (1 patty), but my boyfriend said it is just right for his 2 patties.

Sweet potato chips are good!  Kudos to this place for promoting nature and environmental awareness!  I also loved the beautiful unique paintings on the wall.

Revising my original review.  I get the organic slant and was excited to visit after reading reviews but the food took after 30 min and was served in a paper bag though we were staying.  Drink prices were insane, no free water and prices for food were sky high if you wanted anything reasonable.   The burger was pretty good and we enjoyed the fries but no earth shattering enough to offset the costs and wait times.  If they provide water (like the toco place down the street), bring down prices and check times this place would be MUCH better.  Also we waited to buy a drink because check times were so long but when we got our food we saw the sign saying min fee for credit cards so we had to gather together some quarters to pay the $3 per drink charge (basic sodas etc).  Crazy.  I encourage you to try and check it out but be aware of some of these issues.  Wifi would be a nice touch too.

Why is this not 5 stars across the board?

The BEST burger I've had to date. just the right amount of grease, cheese, simple salt/pepper seasoning.

Sloppy Joe is awesome as well. Interesting Mesquite smoky flavor to it.

Ugh people this is not expensive, it's grass fed organic beef. The small fry order can easily be shared between two people.

    And adios Mio!
they have Mexican Coke! (for those late bloomers who don't know, mexican coke has actual natural sugar, not that yummy corn gunk that it's in ours!) you can taste the difference.

Fantastic spot. and hello, HE WAS ON CHOPPED, AND WON!
    congratulate the guy, will you?

BBQ bacon burger is as good as other reviewers have commented. We also had sweet potato chips. You need to finish the chips soon otherwise it gets soggy.

Stopped in Poppy's while in New York, and was very happy with the results. We're vegan, and got the veggie burger sans cheese along with some fries.

The fries were super greasy so I wouldn't want them all the time, but they were still pretty tasty. Meals are served out of a paper bag with aluminum wrapped burgers. I actually really enjoyed the simplicity of it all.

I really loved their selection of drinks, they happened to have some of my favorite organic teas, and a wide variety of drinks. Their dedication to quality, natural food is awesome too.

I do wish they had sweet potato fries, though, rather than sweet potato chips. That would have put the experience over the top for me ;) Either way, I would definitely go back again!

first thought: $9.00 for a BURGER!!!!!! You have got to be kidding Me!

But after eating that burger(BBQ Bacon Burger w/ jalapenos- to be exact), I am ready and willing to spend that kind of money for great quality. According to the info posted, these arent just your ordinary burgers... They are grass fed cows- which is always  a PLUS in my book. Im all for it! I think it taste better not to mention its better for you, its the way it should be- except that we have to pay the price- burns a whole in my pocket..... Considering that I am now unemployeed I have to watch the way I spend my money.....

So I wont be eating here everyday...but the money spent was well worth it.... On top of that they have Old fashioned sodas made with REAL sugar, not that high fructose corn syrup!!

and the fries (get a small) for 2... I split mine, couldnt finish it on my own.

The man working the register- I dont know if he was the owner or manager or just a worker... Im pretty sure one of the first 2... but you could tell he loved his job because it reflected in his customer service. thats a great combination for a successful business. I tip my hat to you all!

    Bravo!

Not too much to say that hasn't already been said about Poppy's.  They have great grass fed burgers.  I had the burger with cheese, bbq sauce and bacon burger.  The BBQ sauce was really delicious.

Vegetarian husband had a bean burger, which he said was delicious.

Shared an order of sweet potato chips which were good.  Not outstanding.  But good.

I do think paying an extra $1.50 for lettace and tomato is a bit much.  I don't mind at all paying more for a quality product, but I think they could just throw in the lettace and tomato.

I also think it's weird that if you sit at a table - they still bring your meal wrapped up in a paper bag.

I won't go out of my way to go back, but if I'm in Beacon and craving a burger - I'll head to Poppy's.

One off the best burgers around farm raised beef what more can you ask. Locally procured ingredients on a main street in a great town. Small but as they say don't judge a book by it's cover. I never thought I would eat a burger topped with an egg sunyside up the bomb. My type of place then walk it off lot's of great shopping and geocaching around.

Alright, so I have literally eaten everything on the menu here, and I have never, ever been disappointed. The service is friendly and wonderful, and while you'll wait a few minutes for your order, it's absolutely worth it.

A lot of people have remarked on the food being handed over in a bag, but it is absolutely not handed to you in a manner of "okay, get out now." Instead, it's the most convenient method for everyone. No trays to juggle, no dishes to wash. If you're staying, stay, but if you're going, you're ready for it without asking.

I am now a consistent customer at Poppy's. My first visit was so great, that I couldn't stay away if I tried.

Poppy's cranks out a very, very solid burger. Fresh and extra flavorful. As has been elsewhere noted, the egghead is totally the way to go. The fries are excellent as well -shoestring thin, crispy, salty, perfect. And if you don't put the pickles they give you (on the side) on the burger, well, you are just missing out.

Will I hit it again next time I am in Beacon? Definitely! Will I go out of my way to get to Beacon for the Poppy's experience? Er, probably not. It is an excellent burger and fry place, but - after all - still just a burger and fry place.

Also, I wish other Yelpers would quit complaining about the prices. Reasonable value based on the quality of the product, and the 'greener' meat/produce.

Wow!  What an awesome surprise this place was.  Living and working in NYC, I've had some outstanding burgers.  But Poppy's burger made seriously hot, sweaty love to my tastebuds.  I almost feel violated.  This could be my new favorite burger.

100% grass fed, local, humainly raised, farm-to-table beef!  Hard to argue with that but I wasn't really sure what to expect in little ole Beacon, NY. Thankfully, expectations were exceeded and I was supremely impressed.  The meat was so tender, juicy, and flavorful.  The bun was fresh, the cheese gourmet.  I wished I had ordered the "classic big" even though the "classic little" was big enough.  Added a side of hand-cut fries and it was exactly what I needed to finally escape the lingering hangover I was suffering through.  Amazing.

And the vintage pinball machine helps kill some time while you wait.

I am pretty bummed out that this place is not close by.  But I will surely be in the area soon and this place will be getting another visit.  And I cant wait to try the sweet potato chips.

This is a positive 6/10 rating, so bear with me.

I ordered the classic little (single patty) topped with bacon, medium rare. I also had what soda they were offering in place of Boylan's: Johnnie Ryan, I picked the Cane Cola.

Lets start with the easy: the JR Cane Cola, while made with cane sugar, was still quite sweet, and overall the beverage tasted like a supermarket generic cola.

The burger was very good. Quite juicy, and the bacon was awesome. The bun was pretty good too. The two slices of pickle provided a little bit of a crunch. They were good.

But here are the things I wasn't as happy with: I could hardly taste any cheese at all, and in fact had no clue what kind of cheese it was as I could not taste it.

There was no onion on the burger, OR, there was so little that I couldn't taste it at all (I looked and didn't see any).

I was displeased that it cost $1.25 for lettuce and tomato, i passed on them because I was going to get the crunch of the onion (and again there was no onion!).

I felt weird that it was served in a bag, it felt like I was being asked to leave (I didn't). Additionally, there were no napkins on the bag, even!

I thought it was a bit expensive for what was provided as well, but if I am in the area again, I may check it out again anyway.

I had the egghead - L. had the smaller burger. We also had the sweet potato chips - not to be confused with the type of chip that goes with fish - that were really oily and not nearly as good as they sounded. Fries are probably the better choice. We also shared a $2 bottle of water. The total bill was $25. A few things left a bad taste In my mouth (don't mind the pun). They:

    - Don't have free water because they "don't have cups"
    - Charge $1.25 for lettuce and tomato. I wouldn't mind, except both tasted like the type of watery under ripe grocery store produce that should come standard
    - Over cook the burger patty. The patty was only 1/4 lb, so the meat turned completely gray throughout w/ no trace of pink to be found
    - Only have 1 set of condiments for all the tables to share
    - All the food comes in a bag, even if you are eating in

All in all, a pretty disappointing meal; doubly so when we could have got two burgers, with service and free water, for the same price at Beacon Falls Cafe - a much better restaurant. This was more what I expected of a fast food burger, not a boutique burger joint. Not even close to worth the price, especially with HomeSpun so close.

You ask may: "how could her Poppy's experience get any better?"... well, just add beer and a quiet backyard dining area.

The restaurant is also "green" and serves its local grass fed food and drink with minimal waste (no cups, glass bottles, recycling bins etc).

Came here after visiting the Dia Beacon, in hopes of a quick lunch.

3.5 stars would be a more accurate rating.
I had the smaller burger, and it did not disappoint. It was pretty rich in flavor, and with the jalapeno-mustard sauce, and some fries on the side, It was a great combo. However, after one bite of the vegetarian burger, I realized I ruined the final flavor left from the previous regular burger. THe vegetarian burger tasted like potatoes. The only other con was the long wait for food ~25 minutes, and the fact that there were no sweet potato fries, which I was looking forward to try. And it's a bit more expensive than your average burger joint, which I think is semi-justified.

Verdict: I think I would come here again, only after visiting Dia Beacon though.

Great burgers, They don't taste like any other burger you have ever had. It really makes you think about what kind of meat you normally eat.

The scene: picturesque Beacon, NY, lovely Main St., drizzle-y Saturday afternoon, post-visit to the Beacon Dia-Anytown, USA, small and spare, but cute interior.

The players: the b/f and another couple, the delightfully friendly and helpful man behind the counter(owner?).

The meal: a deliciously sloppy Sloppy Joseph(missing something in flavor, but still yummy, the b/f's short rib sammy(super tasty) and 2 yummy-looking burgers(no actual tasting there but heard they were yummy) and some superb sweet potato chips made on site.

The results: a place in which I would love to eat again in a town I would love to visit again.

    YUM.
Burger--fantastic.  If you haven't yet come to terms with the grass-fed beef difference, this is a good place for enlightenment.
    Fries--fantastic.

The price seems a little steep, but grass-fed beef costs way more to produce, is much healthier for you and the world.  You don't need to be armed with that info to recognize the taste difference.  Worth every cent.

We stopped in after a cold and windy hike. Poppy's was just what I was in the mood for. The fellow behind the counter was friendly and upbeat. I like the menu - simple. Good fries. Out of falafel in at noon? Fix it.

Three things I would change: 1) Serve "for here" food in a basket or on a plate (I did not want my food in a bag). 2) The veggie burger needs a little help - add corn, a grain or bean. 3) Each table needs to have condiments - don't be cheap.

I had read some very good articles about Poppy's and decided to make the 30 mile one way  trip up to beautiful Beacon NY! The iconic folk singer Pete Seeger lives in Beacon!

The  place is somewhat small with 6 tables. Out in back of the restaurant, there is a patio with 4 tables when the weather is nice. A bit to cold to eat there when I came.

So it was time to place my  order. There is a large "chalkboard" behind the register listing  all the culinary choices!

My stomach was rumbling, so I wasted no time in ordering! Mr Poppy was behind the counter!

The "big" was my choice! ($9.00)Two 1/4 grass fed ORGANIC patties with cheese, onions pickles and the Jalapeno mustard. I decided to skip  L&T. The hand cut  fires smelled good, so I ordered a small!

I noticed that among many interesting unique beverage choices was COKE in a large GLASS BOTTLE made with SUGAR NOT HFCS!

I waited about 10 minutes for my meal to arrive!   It was served in a paper bag. I eagerly took out the burger and fires (a very large amount for a "small"

I removed the burger from its foil and took my first bite!

My taste buds sang out in pure joy! Wonderfully juicy with a  rich deep  tangy flavor! We are talking a KILLER BURGER!

The onions cheese and Jalapeno mustard along with the fresh soft bun made a  flavorful knock your socks off taste experience!

I did not miss L&T that I usually get on burgers. In fact I think having it, may have taken away from the enjoyment of eating  this WONDERFUL ORGANIC MASTERPIECE!

The  Coke  in a glass bottle was far and away superior to plain old canned Coke with HFCS!

The  fresh cut fires were very good , but not as crispy as I might have liked.I will have to ask for them to be "well done" next time!

I have had a lot of burgers in my time, but this culinary experience was one of THE BEST I have had! I will officially put Poppy's at THE TOP of my list for BEST BURGER!

I did not feel "full" in the way one would feel after having a good sized meal. This was NOT because the burger was small. The  fact that it was local, organic and grass fed made it feel "light" in my stomach VS that heavy feeling you get when eating a burger made with god  knows what!

Total price $14.50. It may seem a bit high but for the quality and quantity it is not bad at all! Consider the same at a Dinner would be $12.00+ for far less quality!

Make the trip to POPPY"S your taste buds will  FOREVER LOVE YOU!

Poppy has the right idea.  The menu is tiny: Grass fed beef, hand cut fries, and that's just about it.  It's smart to pick one thing you're passionate about and do it really, really well.

We went early on a Saturday while day tripping in Beacon.  The first thing Mr. Poppy says to us when we approach the counter:  no fries and no tomato and lettuce.

    Huh?

How do you run out of such key ingredients at 5pm on a Saturday night?  Can't you see you're getting a bit low on potatoes on, say, Thursday afternoon and think...hmmm...better get more for the weekend?

And the lettuce and tomato - it's bad enough that he charges $1 for them, but to not even have them on offer....there's a grocery store down the street!  Big bummer.

These two things were almost deal breakers and we were close to walking out, but burgers were on the brain and we had to try them.

The verdict: Poppy makes a damn good burger.  It was perfectly prepared.
The jalapeno aioli is super yummy, too...if only I had a few fries to scoop up the extra.

Poppy's makes one of the best hamburgers i've ever had. the fries and sweet potato chips are always fantastic. everything is super greasy, but in the best possible way. and the quality of the food is top notch. and do yourself a favor and order anything with the jalapeno aioli.

on top of that the staff is always super friendly and there's always good music playing.

Poppy's is amazing. Their burger is the best I have ever had. In my entire life! The fact that their beef is grass fed, local, and fresh must help! My mouth just adores every bite. I love the jalapeno aioli that can be put on the burger. The fries and sweet potato chips are yummy. They carry an interesting variety of drinks such as Mexican coke, Orangina, and coconut water. The owner/chef couldn't be a nicer or friendlier guy. I love going there!

People keep saying it's $9 for a burger...that's for the double patty burger. It's $6 for the normal burger, which for the taste and quality is an amazing deal. $3 gets you enough fries for 2 people, and that's with the small order! The prices are absolutely reasonable to me, since everything is such high quality.

To the people who had a bad experience, yes, it does get crowded with longer waits on the weekends. They're a small place. If you go on a weekday for lunch just past normal lunch time, you'll be the only one in there and get your food very quickly. It varies. If you want quicker food or a more comfortable overall dining experience, go elsewhere. But I've never had a problem with the burgers being overcooked and dry.

Maybe we arrived on the wrong day? Just a really, really poorly run shop. Like outstandingly poorly run.

Everyone was standing around waiting for their orders - they seemed to be feeding people based on proximity so people were getting their orders having watched their neighbors who ordered first, go without. We kind of stood by and watched the train wreck.

Do people really think these are good burgers? Again, perhaps we were there on an off day but the meat quality was decent at best and the fact that we waited HALF AN HOUR to eat a simple burger, only to find it overcooked and dry was beyond disappointing.

They also claim some sort of 'green' stance and yet serve everything in little plastic cups, paper bags everywhere. It just didn't make sense. What's wrong with hard plates and baskets that are re-usable? Just seemed really strange.

Plus you order all your food, then wait forever, it arrives and is completely unremarkable, then you go back to the front and remind the girl behind the counter what you ate (which she will have forgotten - we had to remind her that we owed her money as she was wishing us a good day) and then pay for it.

Kind of ... awful. I asked them how long they had been open for in case it was just merely operational issues...2 years. Oy. Go somewhere else. Or pack a lunch.

My wife and I visited Beacon on the basis of these reviews, and we were not disappointed. Downtown Beacon turns out to be really nice--totally authentic, unlike New Paltz, Woodstock, etc.--and Poppy's helps make it so. Poppy's is small and simple: you walk in, take a few steps, and you're at the counter. They offer just a few different kinds of burgers, fries, chips, and a fridge full of drinks. My wife and I each got a basic burger and we split a large order of fries.

The quality of the ground beef and the ingredients generally was evidently quite high. The beef was slightly sweet. Though I agree with Suzanne S's review that Poppy's would benefit from fresh-made buns, that's not to say that there's a thing wrong with the buns, just that they could improve them. The size was just right, which is to say that I had enough capacity remaining to walk down the street and get an ice cream cone for dessert. :)

I'll surely be returning to Poppy's on my next drive up Interstate 84.

Poppy's makes my heart sing.... and beg for mercy.

These are the absolute best burgers I have ever eaten in all of my 28 years on this glorious planet. And I'm not saying that as a "burger snob", even though I've eaten at all of those hyped up joints in NYC (and one in Cornwall that should remain unnamed).  It's incomprehensible how something so simple can taste so good. I've actually said out loud (with my mouth full of burger bits, shamefully): "I never want this flavor to leave my mouth!" Seriously. THAT good.

I don't know what kind of dark magic the chefs are up to back in the kitchen, but the meat is perfectly juicy/buttery/oniony and has a clean, robust beefiness. Top it with raw-milk cheddar and some of that dreamy jalapeno aioli and it's a full-on party.

You absolutely get what you pay for here, so spending $10 for a burger and fries is a damn STEAL.

I struggled with writing a review for Poppy's for a long time because I was hoping to keep its awesomeness under the radar, but apparently I lost that battle.

Poppy's totally rocks!! I had a little burger and the other person I was with got the Big burger and we shared a LARGE order of fries. Holy smokes, the large order is literally a HUGE order of fresh cut and fried fries. They filled up a whole paper lunch bag!!

The burgers are made with grass-fed organic beef and they are like hot awesomeness in your mouth (that sounds kinda weird) but they are buttery and delicious!!

Staff was very friendly and super accommodating, good peeps!!

We drove up once to go to Homespun, which was closed. My wife said "there's a good burger joint over here." Then I compared the price to the portion, and was dismayed. For close to ten bucks, I expect a monster burger. The owner promised me that I would not be disappointed.

I was not disappointed. The flavor of this burger was MONSTER.

    It's that good.

I work a stone's throw from the Shake Shack in Madison Sq Park, Manhattan. People stand in line an hour for those burgers. They should spend the time riding the train to Beacon instead. It's a much better burger, and the fries rock too.

Oh. And. Bomb burgers + Antique pinball = epic win.

If this joint was in New York, it'd soon be the next Shake Shack with unbearable lines and people gushing with the fad.  Thank god it isn't.

A friend and I accidentally ended up at this place after a few hours roaming Dia.  I ordered a bacon cheese burger and my friend got the tomato cheese sandwich.  We weren't expecting anything great, just something substantive to call lunch.

We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food.  The fries are thin, crisp and a real mound of it...which turns out to be a good thing as they are addicting.  The beef is grass fed and it's a pleasant surprise to see a real hand formed patty rather than the generic flat rounds cut out by machines.  The beef is sandwiched between a nice cushy egg roll;  the tomato cheese sandwich came on rolls with sesame, I believe.  Let me say, by the way, that it's nice to see a burger just the right size: not so large that it falls apart in my hands but large enough to fill me up without it being unbearable.

The owner of the place is friendly and happy to talk about the food.  I love that.

Oh, did I mention the bacon?  Nice and thick, none of those wimpy bacon slices that seem a mere garnish.  Granted, none of this is good for you, but it's darn good.

Why would you EVER go to a hum-drum, boring fast food restaurant for a cheeseburger when you could have a  lip-smackin' taste-bud titillating, ethically sound gem of a meal at Poppys?

Yes, that was a rhetorical question.

Its all been said before. Its just plain yummy. If you use the best ingredients you get the best results.  Poppy's clearly illustrates this.

    Two (huge) thumbs up.

Poppy's makes some good  old-fashioned, no-nonsense grub. Those non-descript paper bags and tin-foil wrapped bundles contain some of the best burgers and fries I've ever had (and I've obviously had alot, see my reviews and/or my expanding midsection girth).  The best part of their grass-fed beef burgers is that they are light and don't lay in your stomach like a rock for hours on end, incapacitating you and ruining your day. The tiny onion bits really add to the flavor, too.  The fries might be a little salty, but are highly addictive.
Also, I have to mention the great/friendly/quick service, this is how all food establisments should be!!
Damn, now I have a major craving for a Poppy's burger after writing this....and its only 11:30am and I'm stuck at work 2 counties away. Poppy's, after work, I'm coming for you!!

Eight bucks or so for a burger? Are you kidding? I thought when my husband told me about this new place. But I chomped on a 100 percent grass-fed burger with bacon and homemade barbecue sauce that was DAMN good.

Poppy's took the place of my favorite Jamaican restaurant that closed. I was skeptical of a 100 percent organic restaurant. Would it cross the border of pretentiousness?

No, it didn't. Burgers wrapped in tin foil were brought out in a brown paper bag. No plates. No utensils needed. Just you and the food.

Some mishap prevented the kitchen from making French fries, so we got the sweet potato chips instead. They were in a smaller brown paper bag within the bigger one. We gobbled up the generous pile of chips.

A DJ played familiar songs that got us psyched to eat our special meal. I made a mental note to buy the Spoon album off iTunes. M. had the Sloppy Joseph with tomato ragu, raw milk Monterey jack cheese and diced onion. The ragu was said to be spicy, although I didn't really taste the heat. Nonetheless, it had rich flavor.

The chef/owner only uses beef from Kiernan Farms in Gardiner, N.Y., --- a 40 minute drive away.  Unfortunately, the more expensive organic beef translates into higher burger prices that range from $6 to $14. The restaurant isn't just for meat-eaters and offers a veggie burger, a homemade bean patty.

Despite the prices, the burgers are worth it.
