Very basic food and service was spotty.

Rated the best root beer, very basic, not very tasty.

A great new bartender on Sundays!  They should hire him to work all week.  Made my Sunday fabulous.

My choice (based solely on the name)... and a poor one.

Judging by the Egg Cream alone- eww. Don't offer one, if  you can't make one.

Spinach and Artichoke Dip - not terrible, but the toasted slices of pumpernickel and white bread were too thin & crispy to use as the pick-up and kept breaking apart.

Sirloin Steak sandwich (caramalized onions, melted mozzarella, garlic mayo) - mediocre, bread was warm while meat was cold and cheese already congealed.

Pulled Pork on a bun (frizzled onion rings, BBQ sauce) - mediocre, also served lukewarm.

Both sandwiches came with cole slaw, pickle, and homemade potato chips.

    Would I go back? NO.

I came here on a Sunday afternoon for the game believe it or not.

The place did not have a large crowd and they boast the "best tap root beer in Westchester"

Perhaps, it's the only tap beer in Westchester... not sure... Either way, I tasted it and it was just OKAY.

The food wasn't bad but it wasn't good either.  It was just in the middle.  The portions are HUGE and they even serve pigs in a blanket which I thought was kind of cool.  But big portions of mediocre food doesn't do much for most people, I imagine.

They had hoptical illusion on tap which always makes me happy, so that was a big plus.

We had two servers - the first was fantastic and the second was miserable.

Decent food and a good bar.  Fairly large menu with typical bar food plus some other dishes.  All good but the service is consistently slow.  Painfully so.  Been there many times and they can't seem to get it together.  Had to give it 2 stars for that.  Nothing more annoying than bad service regardless of the food quality - which in this case is good.

If you are going to hang out, in no hurry and don't mind having a several beers while you wait then fine.  I wouldn't recommend  - at all - going with young kids.

I've been passing this place for years and never really thought twice about it.

But when my girlfriend and fellow Yelper Laura P exclaimed her craving for a cheeseburger, we looked on our Yelp radar and Pumpernickel popped up. Since I was always curious, I thought 'why not let's try it'.

We came here on a Sunday afternoon and it had some patrons but wasn't too crowded. Seated immediately, this place struck me as far less of a bar than I expected. It looks and sounds like a sports bar, but has far more seating and was a comfortable environment.

Unbelievably I almost completely missed my favorite food item which was on the menu. Home made, baked mac and cheese. I got it the instant I saw it and my girlfriend picked from the amazing selection of burgers. It really is a great menu, but honestly is a bit pricey.

The mac & cheese was hands down one of the best I've ever had. The cheese, which seemed like a whitish cheddar combination, had a NICE kick and it was incredibly creamy, while topped with an incredible bread-crumb glaze and baked to a crisp.

The decor is all-sports with some comedy sprinkled in. A cool environment and a down to earth place. I could see myself enjoying a game here come football season.

For now they hold the title for "Best Mac & Cheese In Westchester" FOR SURE!

I'd heard about Pumpernickel for a while but really who the heck gets to Ardsley on a regular basis? But, it was a dining option that was midway between two groups of friends so off we went.

Our service got off to a slow start when we were seated for almost ten minutes before anyone came over to take our drink order. But, the waitress apologized and really spent the rest of our dinner giving very good service.

We started with a plate of mild wings. They were perfect. Crispy and thoroughly coated in a very delicious vinegary sauce.  My only complaint is that I would not call the wings mild, more like a strong medium but they were very good.

I had the black and blue burger, medium. It was a little closer to well done but the meat was still tasty and I couldn't fond any fault with the fries. Everything seemed pretty well salted - which I like but probably most people would think it was a tad too salty. My dinner companion got the inside out burger, which I tasted and thought was pretty good, although he didn't love the amount of peppers on it. He got the fripps and a root beer, both of which were very good. If I ever find my way back I will definitely order those. Our companions ordered the roast veggie wrap and the bourbon chicken sandwich. I didn't try either but the chicken looked drenched in sauce and cheese. Not sure if I would have liked it but my friend ate all of it.

All in all I would say it was a very good pub food and I'd recommend it if you were in the area.

When I crave a burger, I REALLY crave a burger.

My man Yelper Ben Y. and I didn't know where to grab lunch the other day. Having an intense hankering for a cheeseburger, I typed "burger" in the Yelp iPhone app search bar, and Pumpernickel came up. Ben had been wanting to try the place, so we went.

For a Sunday at 12:30pm, there were a good amount of families in there. From what I could see, most were eating breakfast foods or things that looked like club sandwiches. While their dishes looked good, I didn't care; I wanted my cheeseburger.

The burger selection on the menu is VAST. SO many options, some really awesome toppings and cool, unique renditions of the tradition burger. Feeling overwhelmed, I went with a classic cheese burger with cheddar cheese, served with a pickle, fries and coleslaw. Ben ordered the mac and cheese.

The fries were generic and so was the coleslaw, but BOY OH BOY was the cheeseburger great! The chef clearly knows what he is doing with his ground beef. The meat was fresh and had wonderful flavor - I thoroughly enjoyed every single bite of my delicious dish. Ben's mac was also amazing! The waitress described it as "mac and cheese for grown-ups." It was super good, really rich and creamy, and baked in a bowl with bread-crumbs and cheese on top that got all crispy. From the few bites I had of it, it was up there on my list of best mac and cheese.

Our experience at Pumpernickel was very good! I look forward to my next experience here to try some of their other dishes, although I think it will be hard for me to look at anything other than the burger list!

Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, but it was certainly over priced. $14 for a salad that was described to mimic Panera Bread's Berry and Chicken Salad, except this did not come with chicken and barely had any berries in it. It was more like a green salad with a few berries chopped up on top.

I also tried the open face turkey burgers with turkey chili, the chili had no texture to it, for it was nearly blended to a paste, and the turkey burgers were about 1/8 inche thick, certainly not 8 oz patties.

I believe this restaurant has great potential, but I truly think that they need to make some improvements to their food or in some cases where the food is good the quantitiy or price needs to be adjusted.

Good food, great root beer, friendly staff. I had the cheesy steak wrap which was excellent. Burgers are overcooked though. Portions have decreased in size since they opened.

Went here for lunch on my lunch break from work. Took a little long for the food to come out so I took it to go, but it was delicious!
I had a sage turkey burger with mushrooms and onions. The house fires were amazing. One negative thing though was their "famous" root beer was flat.

Get stuffed in pumpernickel's platters of manly burgers and pitchers of hardy ale. That is the grand mentality of this half-bar & half-restaurant. Such a culinary mindset has lead this particularly good establishment to thrive in little Suburbia. Their burgers from the Caribbean inspired Cubano burger to the succulent Bacon burger can make a cow hunger after it's own kind. A human would ... Possibly faint at the taste? Best burgers I've had South of White Plains no doubt about it. Accompanying the burgers comes the mundane fries, but upon request are the uniquely lethal frips. Unique as most other burger joints wouldn't know what to call them and wouldn't be as knowledgeable to pair them up with burgers. Fried potato chips and burgers are the best combination when it comes to bar chow.

It's a football oriented place, with banners of New York's finest football teams hung above the bar area. Opposite the bar are comfy booths and sky high tables that add to the intricacy of the dimly lit pub. In one corner is the bathroom. It's probably the awesomest and cleanest bathrooms I've seen in a half restaurant/ half bar.

Some may think that because of the alcohol and the common folk consuming the brews keeps children out, you will stand corrected. As a matter of fact, Pumpernickel's hosts it's own kids' menu and boasts about it's superbly brewed root beers. From the appearing of many youngsters in this bar, it seems that Pumpernickel's is a good place for families, folks.

Decided to try pumpernickel after reading the reviews. We were very happy with this place! It's a good restaurant in the Westchester area and reasonably priced. We had a margarita and a root beer, the margarita was good but towards the bottom very strong. The root beer is very good also, it has a stronger licorice taste than normal root beer though. We started off with fried asparagus and the harvest salad. I LOVED the asparagus, such a wonderful mix of asparagus, cheese, prosciutto and the crunchy outside. The salad was great too, the only complaint we had was the dressing. It was strawberry vinaigrette, but it was way too sweet. I had the pulled pork sandwich with the fripps(thinly sliced and rippled fried potatoes, like chips) and Cole slaw and my husband had the fried chicken with fripps and broccoli. My sandwich and Cole slaw were so good, it was HUGE though! My husband said the chicken was a little dry, his second piece was much more juicy though. Lastly we had our yummy desert! I ordered the crepe stuffed with your choice of ice cream and strawberries and topped with chocolate syrup and whipped cream.  My husband ordered the apple strusel, it was a bowl of piping hot apples and sauce, topped with a scoop of your choice of ice cream and whipped cream.  We were very surprised when the bill was only $73! We will defiantly be going back here with the whole family! I was shocked to see the kids meals are only $5.50! I'm so glad to find a reasonably priced and good restaurant in the westchester area!

On our first visit, we went for the root beer but got more than I expected with a very big and juicy burger.  The Chef's Burger comes with Swiss cheese, onion marmalade, field greens, jalapeño caps, FFO & sweet potato fries.  The fried onions and marmalade are terrific on burger.  First time I went sans jalapeno caps.  Second visit I had them included and burger was too hot so I removed them.   I went back for another visit last night and realized that without all the toppings the burger itself isn't all that tasty.  I recently ate at Piper's Kilt and their burger had a lot of flavor and that came from the burger alone, not because of all the add-ons.  Because of this and a tuna wasabi wrap, I'm revising my rating to only three stars.  The tuna was not very good nor was the seaweed salad wrapped inside.  A bloody mary was quite good but at $9 I wouldn't get it again.

Their root beer has a very intense flavor so if you're use to store bought root beer you may not like the heavy licorice flavor you taste when drinking this soda.  I would prefer that the root beer is served with ice, it should be more chilled.  Ask for a glass of ice on the side.  At $2.99 it's a large drink so you get your monies worth.

This place appears to be nice looking upon first look.  However after practically being ignored upon entering, awful and rude service, and probably the worst burgers I've ever seen or tasted, I wouldn't recommend this place to a stray dog.
To top it off, upon complaining to the owner about the well done rubbery burgers he was rude and asked me if I wanted to take the untouched burger home, since it was already cooked.  I said no, he took the burger away, but he refused to take it off the bill, sarcastically implying that I was trying to get a free meal.  I told him the chili was fine, but the burgers did not come close to my satisfaction.  He was more for making an $8 profit than for making this customer happy.  I will never go to this dive of a restaurant again.  NEITHER SHOULD YOU!
Not worth the smelly environment, nasty staff, and waste of time and money.

lesson of the day: always give a restaurant a second chance before deciding it is a FAIL! [unless they REALLLY sucked the first time]

first visit: so i'm patiently waiting for the hostess to greet and sit us but how long do you wait before you start coughing loudly hoping someone will notice you? maybe throwing the menus across the restaurant will get someone's attention? or giving evil stares to the bartender? waiting!!! 5 mins. 10 mins. 15 minutes later....she arrives. i'm not one to be a biznotch in a restaurant or complain because they are making my food and who knows what they will do in that kitchen!! anyways we order "medium" wings as an appetizer. as i am eating them, i am thinking " DAMMMMNNN! THIS IS HOT!" ...and i'm no wuss. i've had my share of spicy food but this was just like OMG what am i eating!?!!!

so now my mouth is on fire. i am thinking i am going to die/throw up/rip my lips off my face when my meal comes.  I ordered a chilly burger with cheese. it was good but to be honest i can't remember what it tasted like because all i was thinking about was my lips, water, and my damn lips! all i wanted was to stick my face in a tub of water... :tear:

second visit: we were seated promptly. yay! order wings but then find out. there is NO MEDIUM!!! WHAT!? so our last waitress gave us HOT!!! ....damn you for making my lips cry. with that said, we order mild which is still spicy. definitely not a normal mild. i would say there are medium.

i got the harvest salad (pears, walnut, greens, raspberry vinaigrette) it was AMAZING! the raspberry vinaigrette must be homemade because i've never had anything so heavenly in my life.  i've been having dreams of that dressing and salad ever since! can't wait for us to meet again : )

I have only been to Pumpernickel once, but my experience there was pleasant. It is a very nice and clean establishment, with very comfortable booths. They also have a very comfortable waiting area. I had a burger there and it was delicious.

What I gathered from my one visit there is that Pumpernickel attracts different crowds. There were many families with kids, as well as groups of friends in their 20s, mixed in with older locals.

I came here with the BF after a long afternoon of apple picking. We were starving so we ordered 10 chicken wings in honey buffalo sauce as an app. They were the best wings I've had in a while. The little bit of honey that they put into the buffalo sauce really takes it to another level. AMAZING! I ordered the bourbon burger which was delicious. The BF said that the cow girl burger was good but basically the same as the bourbon burger minus the bourbon. We liked the fripps (homemade chips) but the fries were just ok. We also shared the root beer that they had on tap. At first it was really mediciney and I didn't like it. However, I got used to it and ended up drinking the whole thing. It was really tasty and worth trying. In fact, I would be willing to make the drive again just for the wings.

My family lives near by and I do my best to support local establishments. It's easy to support Pumperknickel because the food, vibe and service are good and consistent with every visit.

I know Pumperknickel comes offs like its supposed to be a pub but the best foods here are usually the ones you can't find elsewhere. I've had their burgers and I would consider them good, but not yelp-able however my favorites include their L.A. omelet (egg whites scrambled with avocado and tomato and with a avocado-ranch dressing) and their vegetarian reuben. The L.A. omelet is pretty darn healthy and tasty so anti-dieters shouldn't be put off by the description or goal. Same goes for the vegetarian reuben b/c I'm sure that even though that sandwich is packed with jicama and vegetables, it doesn't come off that healthy when the oil and juices coat my hands after every bite.

The b/f, family members and friends who have joined me every time I go have ordered various other meals but I like my stuff so much, I don't poach their food and they know not to ask for mine.

So I tried the root beer, which is made with cane sugar...and I'm the kind of person who *craves* sweet things on an hourly basis...and this was intense.  I ended up pouring almost half a glass of water in the root beer to dilute it!  It's crazy sweet, but very good when diluted (although I felt like I was violating some sacred bond between diner and drink).

Also, I went on a Friday night this time and this time our waitress brought us the wrong salad dressing - ranch instead of raspberry vinaigrette. Pretty hard to confuse the two...but I didn't expect much from the waitress after realizing how lost in a fog she seemed when she greeted us.

Sadly, this last visit wasn't as satisfying as the first.  I got the same thing (wasabi tuna wrap) and it wasn't nearly as good as last time.  I got it well done and the tuna was still fairly pink in the center.  Unfortunately I guess the rule that food quality goes down with increased orders rings true for this place - hence the decreased rating.  We were still seated very quickly.

Pumpernickel is a large "pub" type restaurant that has some pretty good burgers and sandwiches.  Neat and clean inside, comfortable booths, several tvs around to watch sports. Service was ok, have had better. The major downside to this place is that it gets pretty crowded with families and small children, who tend to get louder and messier than some bar crowds. This obviously means its a great place for families with children, but not necessarily for younger people who want a good burger, some drinks, relaxed conversation and some game watching. A decent place, you just have to go there at the right time.
