There's more to this restaurant than meets the eye. Located several miles outside of downtown, not only is it a local eatery, but it's a destination restaurant. The restaurant is huge, despite its small visage. The menu is also huge. Everything you could ever wish for in an Italian menu. I went with my family. We had 3 entrees between the four of us and not only was everything delicious, but we couldn't finish it all. The portions are huge! I highly recommend the Zupe de Pesce. You can split the order for one. It's the size of 2 huge portions (which is why it's so expensive). Strongly recommend this restaurant. Nice service as well.
Review Source:LOL, just noticed this reply. Â And I remember it like yesterday. Â
Think your missing the point. Â He didn't tell us it was EXPENSIVE when we ordered it, we found out the price when we got the bill. Â Then we got the snooty, "IT'S EXPENSIVE" when we inquired about the high price.
21.95 for buff motz for an appetizer(?) Â If the norm for that is 8.00 - 14.00 wouldn't you admit it would BE NICE to let your customer know the high price. Â It's obvious what happened he
Want a good, really good, gourmet Italian meal with fair prices and never being ripped off, go to ZIA'S in Edison Park, you'll LOVE IT!
I used to LOVE this place...I would even drag clients from downtown over here because it was a great restaurant, authentic Italian...and that round corner hidey hole booth was awesome!
That was probably ten years ago. Â I still loved this place for many more years, but I hadn't been there lately. Â I'm not sure if they changed owners or what the story is, but we got seated in what looked like a banquet hall...I didn't even know that room existed before that. Â The whole dynamic of the place in the banquet hall thing sucked. Â And we got pretty much ignored as the waitstaff fondled a table of eleven (probably thinking bigger tips). Â The hostess/manager apologized several times (and she did it nicely) as I had to keep coming up and asking her if someone was going to wait our table of two....or ask us if we wanted another drink....or dessert....*sigh*
Agostino, I loved you! Â I miss you! Â But I have to find somewhere else that will actually pay attention to me AND have good food and atmosphere. Â This place used to ROCK. Â I'm sad.
Always great food and great service at Agostino's! Â Their seafood is fresh and their service is wonderful. Â I would highly recommend them for any thing from a date night to dinner party. Â After dinner they bring you out the most ripe and delicious fresh fruit which is such a wonderful touch. Â A family favorite is the Zupe de Pesce (huge platter of mixed seafood and shell fish cooked in a zesty red sauce with pasta). Â It is awesome!
Review Source:FAMILY STYLE DINNING...with a FEE! We celebrated Mothers Day here and the place was packed!!! It was fun but be warned ITS FAMILY STYLE DINNING eventhough there is a charge for splitting plates. Confusing huh?? Clearly this was the place to be because everyone and their Mothers were there!! Ha! Our waiter appeared shy and reserved with a slight accent and wasn't extremely helpful but he was nice enough. I just wished he would have explained to us the portions and the fact that it was FAMILY STYLE DINNING!! So be prepared if the menu reads Chicken Vesuvio or Chicken Parmesan they do not mean a meal for one with perhaps a side of mashed and veggies or pasta because my 16yo got a plate with 2 chicken breasts and that's it! And my 18yo cousin ordered the same thing, 2 chicken breasts. I'm sure you're thinking "of course it's Family Style, it's Italian" which usually is but we were mislead because the menu clearly read EXTRA CHARGE FOR SHARING PLATES. Well The good thing was that after waiting a full and complete hour : the food was flavorful and authentic so we will be enjoying our leftovers everyday till midweek. Buon appetito
Review Source:The food is not good enough to merit the prices. I was not impressed with the pasta dish. It was smothered in too much tomato sauce and the sauce was not that tasty. It tasted like canned sauce. Not what I expected for a $30 plate. The calamari was tough, and, they were full octopus tenticals. In addition, the service was not that great. It took about 45 minutes to get our food.
Review Source:My family has been eating at Ristorante Agostino since they were at the previous location and an up and coming actor was there one night while we dined at the table across from him... Liam Neeson. Â He seem to really enjoy the food, but that was more than a few years ago. Â Not sure if Liam still dines at Agostinos, but we are still going for the most delicious authentic Italian cuisine! Â
From the Linguini con coze to the grilled seabass, the food is always prepared to perfection and served by any one of the amazing staff. Â Our regular waiter, Teki, is always smiling and is very attentive. Â Making sure the meal comes to the table prepared as ordered!
The only complaints is the parking is not great. Â
Enjoy this neighborhood gem and order the Mussels Marinara to start off your meal. Â You will be very happy you did!
I'm mixed (but more leaning towards the negative) about this place. Â
The parking is at best crappy for this place. Â I did NOT see one marked handicapped parking spot in their private lot. Â While that may not matter much for many people, my father uses a wheelchair when he goes out, so the struggling to find a parking spot as well as being able to get him in and out of the car kinda knocks out 1 star off the bat.
Service is slow. Â Very slow. Â I contemplated leaving because it was too slow. Â Maybe I am impatient, but I felt abandoned before the meal even started. Â Pacing during my dinner was also slow. Â Sorry, but I don't like to spend 3 hours to have a simple dinner.
The food, when it did come, was overall good.  We started with the fried mixed seafood appetizer, which was simply amazing.  The soups of the day were simple, but well executed.  Our veal entrees tasted good, but I felt it was oily and incomplete as it was only 4 thin slices of meat and a sprig of vegetable.  I was not impressed with dessert - my cannoli  was at best 1/3 filled and looked like an afterthought.  I didn't feel it was worth the $4.
I did notice during my one trip to the mens room that the soap dispenser was broken, and looks to have been that way for awhile. Â No other soap source was seen. Â Makes me wonder how their staff is washing up... Â another star taken away for that.
Straightforward food, no surprises. Â Dined here for the first time with friends and thought the food was just okay. Â We had a variety of dishes from seafood to pasta dishes and all were fine. Â The prices were a bit higher than I would have expected given the neighborhood. Â The place caters to families which makes it VERY noisy. Â I used the restroom before we left the restaurant and it was filthy. Â I was glad I didn't see it before we ate our food because it certainly would have ruined my appetitie.
Review Source:So here is the deal about Italian food. Â
So many restaurants particularly downtown try too hard with Italian food. Â They try too hard not only with the food but the restaurant decor. Â When you have Italian, you should feel like you're chowing down on huge portions of the old family recipe. Not intricate pasta delicacies all fancy and stuff. Thats not Italian. Thats yuppy.
Agostino serves Italian food. Â I ordered the Sapore di Mare for the second time tonight, and it was absolutely wonderful. Â To begin, for a low-key Italian restaurant, they do have an extensive wine list. The bread served is always warm and freshly baked, with a perfectly crunchy crust and soft, warm center. The wait staff has been wonderful each time, and being Italian, you know right off the bat this place is legit.
Now back to the Sapore di Mare. Â This seafood dish, served with a melody of incredibly fresh and tasty seafood, including clams, mussels, huge shrimp, octopus, squid, and crab, is served over perfectly cooked linguine in a godly spicy red sauce. Â Just the sauce and noodles alone are enough to make me smile for weeks. Â The seafood makes it all the better. Â Frutti de Mare is basically a staple for me, no matter the Italian restaurant, and this by far is the best seafood in red sauce I've had.
The outside seating is very nice, not the best location to enjoy a meal (feet from Harlem Avenue) but it is a great option. Â
All around, if you are looking for overwhelming serving of  delicions, authentic, wicked Italian fare, this is it.  If you want fancy yuppy stuff. Try Coco Pazzo.
Mmmmeh, It was okay...The wine selection was good. Â The atmosphere was quiet and intimate. However, I wasn't sure if the waiter was talking English or Italian! Â He qave me all the specials and recommended wines, but since I didn't understand most of it, I just kept nodding my head and saying yes. Â The food was okay, but a touch to salty. Â Next time I'll just go to have a bottle of wine, cause I've had better food for less else where.
Review Source:Yummmmm. We've been coming here for years, most recently last weekend for my birthday. Amazing zuppa di pesce, grilled calamari, and home-made ravioli that were little pillows of deliciousness. Friendly wait staff and a table side visit from the owner really let us know this is a quality place.
The wine list is good, if anything negative at all could be said the atmosphere is pretty routine and the bar is tiny.
Just go for really authentic delicious food, you wont be disappointed.
i had chicken parm. Â prob not the best choice. Â perhaps a pasta or fish dish would've been better. Â it was just average. Â it was a ridiculous amount of pounded chicken with no pasta side. Â comes with only soup or salad. Â
my dinner mates all had mussels, clams, and seafood platters over linguine and they loved every bit of it. Â service was fab. old school dago'esque from like '93 maybe. Â not really important to any of us, but still...
they bring out a small fruit platter on the house, which was delicious and sweet and cold. we'll go back. Â
calamari and caprese salad were also good.
If this place is suggested by a cab driver, beware! Not being from here, we took his advice to eat based on his godfatherly-relationship with the staff.
The complimentary bread was very dry and flavorless. Even dipping it in oil and vinegar did not help. The salad was nothing to speak of and desperately screaming for vinegar or dressing of any kind.
The chicken was obviously mystery meat pressed into a breast-like form...and the tomatoe sauce was just that--no spices like an Italian meal should have.
The prosciutto was somewhat anchovie-like and the only saving feature of chicken agostino was the artichokes they took out of a can.
Not recommended if you are searching for "authentic Italian food"
I dined here last night with a group of 12. They were accommodating, and we only had to wait a little while in the tiny bar. The service was good, and the food was okay. For appetizers, we ordered the Calamari, which was tender and yummy, and the Caprese, which was great. My entree, on the other hand was just OK.
I ordered the Grigliata Mista di Pesce, (Grilled Seafood Assortment )
$27.95. Everything was super fresh, but it was in some sort of garlic oil, I mean DRIPPING in oil. I love grilled seafood, but not when it is drenched in oil. It certainly doesn't state that on the menu, otherwise I would not have ordered it.
I think everyone else enjoyed their entrees. Complementary fruit plate follows the meal, with the largest grapes I've ever seen, whole apples, oranges, and sliced fresh pineapples.
I also ordered the Tiramisu for dessert, and it was super coffee charged. I mean...WOW! If you love that flavor, you'll love this dessert.
I will definitely go back, but will have a different meal next time. I liked the staff, as well as the intimate atmosphere.
I like this place. It is full of old school kind of charm. By that I mean there are many misguided suburban ideas going on here in terms of service, decor, presentation. Â But the food outshines it all.
So what if the interior looks a little like the 1980's . Or maybe like some family member has been watching too much HGTV and went wild with Home Depot products. So what if my waiter talked on and on with his buddy at the bar about the 3-way he had the night before. Eeeew. Whatever. LOL.
The bottom line is that this place never fails to deliver. Â It may not be "cuisine", but it is always right on with all the standards and the fish is always fresh and flavorful - if you are not eating the fish here you are doing yourself a disservice.
The wait staff and the patrons add a lot of color to this place, you definetly expect Tony and Carmella to walk in at any time with their posse.
Expect a satisfied, full tummy.
Those of you who have read my other reviews, know that I really enjoy Italian food. Here at Agostino's, this is food from Nonna's kitchen. The flavors all blend together in a savory delight. I wouldn't worry about going to other places - the food is good, service is top, and atmosphere is delightful.
You must have the Melrose peppers, they were soft, not mushy, and sauteed in the right amount of oil. You could make an entire meal of the peppers and the good bread!
I also had the Halibut Mediterranean style - healthy, tasty, quite plentiful, the halibut almost looked like it enjoyed being on my plate. My only thing was the olives. While I enjoy olives, I'd rather have them in my salad than in my meal - but hey, that's my preference.
I didn't save room for the desert - but that gave me a reason to go back again.
A più tardi!
Good Italian food. The calamari was big enough for 4 to share, Â but then again at $15.00 it should be. The gnocchi was the fluffiest I've had. You can tell it is homemade. Not doughy and sticky like most. They need more than just house wine by the glass, as we didn't want a whole bottle and the half bottle we chose was not available. Service should have been better, considering it was early and nobody was there. Â I don't think you'd be disappointed for a dinner out.
Review Source:I just came back from Agostino's and I can attest that it's definitely okay. Â Not drop dead amazing, but it was pretty good. Â The decor reminded me of a 1980s Long Island Italian restaurant (I grew up there!), complete with a teased out hair, over-tanned, leathery skinned, apparently cokehead woman who jumped out of her chair every 3 minutes to go to the bathroom, and large table of group of older folks who seemed to all work together. Â I could almost hear the Billy Joel playing in the background. "...a bottle of red, a bottle of white/whatever kind of mood you're in tonight."
We started by splitting a caprese salad, which was pretty heavy on the oil. Â I loved the fresh mozzarella and the tomatoes were thick and juicy, but the bottom of the plate looked like a soupy mess. Â I literally had to hold everything up with a fork and let it drip off for a few seconds before I could put it in my mouth. Â Next up was a very hearty, if not very large, portion of minestrone soup. Â My only complaint about it was that it was on the cool side. Â Still not terrible.
For entrees, I went with tortellini al prosciutto and my "date" had the pollo vesuvio. Â After 30 minutes and a half bottle of wine, two STEAMING HOT giant plates of food came out. Â Mine was loaded with peas, which I don't mind, but peas are kind of boring to me. Â The mountains of prosciutto totally offset it though. Â And, the tortellini shells themselves were excellent. Â But, again, the amount of oil was overwhelming. Â I don't know what they're trying to cover up, but the ingredients seemed fresh and probably would have tasted good with half the oil. Â I tasted my "date"s chicken and it was pretty plain. Â Nothing too exciting, just run of the mill Italian style chicken.
In retrospect, I probably should have gone for the seafood, but being with a non-seafood eater who had eaten there before I went on her suggestion. Â After checking their website I see that they seem to pride themselves on their seafood. Â Oh well. Â There's always a next time.
Nothing stood out or bummed me out too much. Â The waitstaff was extremely nice and attentive and our food came out pretty quickly. Â I'd recommend it, but I would try out some of their specialties instead next time.
I'm not Italian, but growing up in Addison, I feel like I had the experience enough to know good Italian food. Â This place, unfortunately, didn't bring us any. Â We felt totally ignored service-wise, and there were plenty of waiters on staff when we were there. Â It seemed like we were interrupting a private party with all the regulars and suffered for it. Â The food was really bland and very greasy, with no special touches. Â The prices were high for the area and there are definitely better choices within a short drive. Â We won't be back.
Review Source:I live two blocks away from this place. Â Elmwood Park is the official Little Italy in the suburban Chicagoland area. Â This is the only area where you will find true Italian Restaurants and not chains. Â The reason I said I live two blocks from this place is becasue I have never been there until a year ago. Â I have only lived in this neighborhood for 3 years. Â I have driven by here a million times and thought in unremarkable. Â Why did I go in? Â I saw this on Check Please and it was one of those few nights that all three reviewers raved. Â The place decor wise is still unremarkable. Â The wait staff is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Â The food is where it is at! Â If you crave traditional Italian food, this it the place. Â From the veal to the chicken dishes, it can not tell you that I have any better anywhere else. Â The menu will not surprise you. Â Just go here for the food! Â PERIOD!
Review Source:My 3rd time dining here. The octopus appetizer is great as well the calamari. My fiance ordered the grilled shrimp and  I ordered the shrimp francese. Everything tasted great at the time. We were disappointed with the grease at the bottom of each plate, which in turn affected us into the night and the next morning. Next time I go I will order carefully items that are traditionally hard to screw up. Like chicken or veal Parmesan.
Review Source:Where can I start? Â After reading all of the glowing reviews of this restaurant, I decided to make this little Italian spot the setting of the second meeting with my girlfriend's parents over dinner. Â It was highly bragged about on Yelp, and it was blocks from their house. Â How could I lose?
A nice little intimate establishment, Agostino's has excellent and knowledgeable servers who are eager to please and well informed on the menu. Â My girlfriend's mother loved her food, and I believe my gf had a veal Saltimboca which was quite tasty. Â I ordered the Veal Parm...a classic. Â The veal was excellent, huge portion, however the marinara tasted like whole tomatoes from a can were poured on top. Â There was no spice to the marinara. Â I don't believe I will order it again.
My gf's father ordered the Spaghetti Bolognese, per my advice as I love it at every other restaurant. Â To my surprise, what came out was spaghetti with meat and some veggies on top.It looked like Chili Mac without Sauce. Â It was dry and wasn't very flavorful. Â We tried adding my sauce to his plate, but it didn't do the trick.
2/4 isn't bad. Â I was advised that the seafood is excellent here, but given my lack of interest I didn't try any. Â I may try it again, but no time in the near future. Â I am too hung up on my dear, La Scarola.
Talk about authentic Italian restaurant.... This place is it!!! The staff is fantastic and very friendly. Â The food is to die for. Â Every time I've been there my expectations are met. Â We always start off with the grilled seafood as an appetizer which consists of grilled shrimp, calamari, and octopus. Â The seafood is grilled in olive oil and garlic. Â For our main course I ordered lobster and crab meat stuffed ravioli with the most delicious cream sauce I have ever tasted. Â The ravioli had a nice amount of the crab and lobster meat inside. Â The portion was huge and delicious. Â My boyfriend had the pasta with an enormous amount of seafood consisting of mussels, crab legs, calamari, shrimp, and oysters. Â The pasta plate was soooooo delicious. Â After we were done you get this huge plate full of fruit which definitely hit the spot!!!!
I definitely recommend this restaurant for a nice romantic and definitely authentic Italian dinner!
I've been here just once and I am aiming to go back in the near future. Â The food and service are outstanding. Â There was a very large group of us (18) that came here and most of us are in the service industry, so we can be hard to please. Â Our server got everyone's order down to the drink correct. Â They had a Snapper special where they filleted it right in front of me. Â It was absolutely phenomenal! Â And the fruit at the end of the meal was equally as great!
Review Source:Only been here once, and while the place isn't cheap, its worth it. Been to Rosebud and all the other more popular Italian places, and this place is as good if not better. The staff was very friendly and very informative as well. I also like the fruit at the end of the meal. Very Italian, and a great finish.
Review Source:Excellent. Â It is my favorite Italian restaurant. Â The food is great and you won't leave hungry. Â They also give you fruit at the end of the meal.
The only problem I have is that somehow everytime I go the price creeps up to be a lot more than think it would be judging from menu prices. Â Otherwise it would have had 5 stars. Â I think what happens is that the drinks are expensive and refills are not free, so it slowly creeps up in price.
