I like this restaurant. Very cozy inside. Came on New Year's Day (in evening).

Had the chicken quesadillas - they were delicious. They give you 4 nice slices (I had to take 2 home).  Comes with tomatoes, onions, and lettuce on the side.

    Recommended!!

Ok parking can be a pain but lemme tell you the pancakes are so worth it. I cant tell you how many times I drove by Sally's before finally deciding to have breakfast there one day. Shame on me for not going sooner. My daughter had an omlete that was amazing. Hubby had french toast...also deelish! We'll be  back for sure.

The only reason this place is even getting a star is because our waitress was at least nice at first & no stars is not an option.

I went to Sally's a couple days ago with my mom for lunch. I ordered a burger with jalapeno cheese and bacon, she ordered a Julienne Salad. We both got soup with our meals, as well as a bread basket for the table. The bread was the best part of the meal. The soup was cold, not even warm, cold. So we just told our waitress we did not want it and proceeded to wait for our food.

Her salad was fine at first glance, my burger was not. The cheese was not even melted and the meat was cold. So I sent it back to have them melt the cheese & add bacon because it was not there, I was nice & it was a seemingly simple request. It came back 5 minutes later and the cheese was black there was still no bacon, and the second waitress of the day couldn't understand why I didn't want it. Our original waitress then returned to see what the problem was and I looked at my burger, she apologized and asked what I'd like instead. I decided to give them one more chance.

I asked them to please bring me a new burger, with American cheese & bacon. My mother and I waited patiently, she decided to take a break from her "Julienne' salad that had about 4 strips each of turkey ham & the two cheeses. Finally bout 12 minutes later my burger arrived, & I went to take a bite, because it looked like what I'd asked for. What happened next? I felt as though I had taken a bite of charcoal briquettes, and I took the top bun off to find it charred beyond belief. As well as the bottom bun half blackened. I sent the food back and asked for nothing else, just for it to be taken off the bill. The manager begrudgingly took it off. Then I had a bite of my mothers salad, got a nasty stale taste from the turkey & that sealed the deal.

We will NOT be returning. This place is in need of a new owner, new kitchen staff and a less indifferent wait staff.  They could do with a reduction in their menu as well. Don't waste your time or money. You'd be much better off at the Wendy's next door!

I've been here before. I'm a fan or apple pancakes, have been since I was a kid.

Its been a few years since I've been here. Have they changed the prices? Our breakfast for two was close to $30 dollars. For 2 orders of 2 eggs, hash browns and 2 sides of bacon, orange juice and 2 coffees.

I'm still scratching my head on this one.

And from what I could see the wait staff was friendly and pleasant, except for our server. There's so many other diners in Chicago, I won't be coming back.

This review applies to the breakfast menu only (I've never eaten lunch or dinner entrees here, just breakfast items). Yum yum yum. Delicious & generous breakfast skillets, ham on the bone, Eggs Benedict, pancakes & waffles! Yum yum yum.

Sally's is a big, casual, friendly place for a standard American breakfast of egg and meat dishes.  Went here with extended family, visiting from both England & Mexico, as a way of introducing them to American breakfast items such as pancakes, waffles, maple syrup, hash browns--all exotic to them and all familiar to me.  I had a good plate of buckwheat pancakes with coffee, while others at my table had various combinations of eggs, corned beef hash, veggie omelets and so on..  Most of these breakfast entrees seem to be priced at about $8 and are huge helpings in most cases.  Our experienced professional waitress was great: funny and attentive.  She brought the five-year-old in our group some crayons and paper to color on without our even asking.  And the bus guys never missed a beat; they were always refilling my coffee before I'd reached the bottom of the cup, even as fast as I was drinking it on a groggy Saturday morning.

I used to LOVE this place growing up in the neighborhood! Now it has gone WAY down! It's so sad! The minestrone soup used to be great, they offered Navy Bean and Chicken noodle the day I went. My chicken Marsala was SO bland. It was SO disappointing! They changed their ancient menu... FINALLY but the dishes are no where near okay. I hope you get a new cook. This is sad and a tragedy. I don't even want to go for crepes for fear of disappointment! And my Strawberry Boston float, tasted like FLAT sugar free soda. Which was the BIGGEST disappointment for me. Sadly, I will not be returning to Sally's, ever.

We had not been here in years.  I guess we fell out of habit.  We have recently been back twice, and the food was as always:  consistently good.  I like ordering the New York Strip Steak and  they always deliver a good one:)  Good EATS.  The kids like it and the waitresses are accomodating and attentive.  It is always comforting to eat here.

Came here with a rather large group for a late lunch on a Sunday. The staff was very accommodating by moving us to a bigger table when our party unexpectedly grew.

The food options are typical of a family restaurant. I got a chicken philly sandwich which came with fries and a bowl of soup. Our table got a mixture of food from breakfast to salads and everything looked appetizing.

My only complaint was that our server never came around to offer refills on the soft drinks. She did refill coffee though.

I've been here a couple times and each time I've come away with the same thought. It's not the greatest place, but it's perfect when you're hungry for breakfast, want it fast, and just not picky about what you're going to eat.  Otherwise, I'm not going out of my way to eat here.  It has the feel of a greek diner with americanized german/dutch fare that is better than some but not most.  Yeah kinda weird.  lol.

The omelets are light and fluffy however.  They are definitely baked, which I see as a huge plus.  If the ingredients that went into them were of higher quality, I'd be back time and again.  My last visit, I had a sausage and pepper omelet.  it came with a large side of hash browns and two cakes.  The cakes were meh.  The omelet was just screaming for better ingredients as the sausage were breakfast links that were griddled and then sliced with flavorless sauteed bell peppers to add color.  The omelet though was light and fluffy just the way I like it.  The hash browns were good, but I should have asked to have them crispier.

Overall, a 2.  Not bad, not great, but just right "sometimes"...

    A standard staple for breakfast/lunch.

The omelettes are light and fluffy. Go with the ham and cheese or denver style. The fried potatoes are pretty good, but how can you mess up fried potatoes?

The crepes are yummy! I love the banana nut and the strawberry crepes. Big portions, enough to take home.

I have not had their waffles, but have had the German Apple Pancake. It takes forever to come, but that's because it is made fresh. Well worth the wait.

Lunch is standard fare, sandwiches come with fries, nothing too exciting, but all around good food at an affordable price.

Sally's is also very busy in the mornings, be prepared to wait for a few minutes for a seat.

One of the worst experiences of my life. Our server was rude and didn't care to inform us of all the little things she was offering cost more. My cousin got a steak and eggs with burnt yet uncooked potatoes (how is this even possible?) and I got an entirely inedible Monty Crisco. I told the waitress it was cold and disgusting I suggested maybe tomatoes would help and she heated it up and threw some tomatoes on it and charged me 2.00s for that! I didn't eat it and the owner refused to take it off the bill. Nasty service nasty food! I am contacting the BBB! $15 for a cup of coffee and a container of food that ended up in the trash.

After arriving home via the dreadful O'Hare airport after being in the warm Caribbean islands for a week, I needed some classic American breakfast.  My mother, aunt, uncle and partner drove around their old childhood neighborhood and pulled in here to Sally's which is said to have not changed a bit.  The freshly baked rolls with my chicken soup was a nice way to acculturate my stomach back to American food.  I had to order the thick and fluffy German Apple Pancake as my entree.  It must be in my German blood but it calls my name every time I'm at a pancake house.  Anything edible that is the size of my head I must order, done.  The pancake was delicious with apples, powdered sugar and lemon.   The staff was friendly, kept the coffee a'pouring, and service was a good pace.  While I will admit that the Eastern European mafia-esque owners who seem to run the place with an iron fist are a bit...umm 'unique'...they add a bit of character to a plain waffle shoppe with an Americanized name like Sally's.

Me and my bf frequented this restaurant very other morning for breakfast last year. When we thought we were tired of dining here we'd drive right past it to Bakers Square, IHOP, or Denny's (which are all down the same street) only to be disappointed in ourselves for 'cheating on' Sally.

-Their pancakes are good, but the crepes are a way better choice.
-You can't go wrong with their Denver or Veggie omelette.
-Bacon and eggs are always cooked to our specifications.
-Coffee refills are plentiful and waitstaff are all pleasant
    -Apple Pancake

What's the story on all the pancake places in the Chicago area?  Had breakfast here and it was on par with other places.  Nothing really stood out but service was very nice and friendly.  My coffee cup was always full

My girlfriend and I went to Sally's one night when I had the urge for pancakes.  She had heard from a friend that it is good.  It was a little bit of a drive to get there, but it turned out to be worth it.

I had crepes and my girlfriend had a sandwich.  Both were delicious.  My crepes were filled with strawberries and bananas and had a generous pile of whipped cream on top.  Can't really go wrong with a dish like that.

The restaurant was nice and quiet while we were eating.  There was a woman with children there and these were a couple of the best behaved kids I've seen, so kudos to their mom.

Also, we didn't realize that gale-force winds were knocking down trees outside while we ate and we had no idea of the severity of the storm as it raged, so beaucoup kudos to the construction company that built the place!

I didn't have a big enough appetite for the enormous apple pancake on this trip, but we will be going back again soon for that!  It looks awesome!

Bottom line... good food, good service, comfortable atmosphere and decent prices... an excellent dining experience!

    BRUNCH!!!!!!!  I said it... BRUNCH!!!!!

I love brunch and when I have an opportunity to eat it at anytime of the day even better....

I haven't been to Sally's since senior prom.... hence 10 years ago.  And I don't even know why that is.... Sally's is better than Ihop (yeah I said it).... Their chocolate chip pancakes are delish, I opted for their corned beef hash combo and it satisfied my tummy!

Stopped by around 8pm on a Sunday night, which is definitely not a time when you see this place packed.

Split a large apple pancake and the baby back rib meal with my boyfriend. Everything was really good, especially the creamy chicken soup that we got with the rib meal. The ribs were tender, moist and fall-off-the-bone good. While I'm pretty sure they just slather theirs in Open Pit barbecue sauce, I'm OK with that because that particular sauce is like a comfort food for me. I've never had an apple pancake before, but the one here seemed very tasty to me. Since it does take 25 minutes to cook, it arrived with perfect timing for dessert. Unless you are a big eater, though, you'll probably need to bring friends along to help eat this thing when it's hot and fresh (reheated leftovers were nowhere near as good).

Our waitress was friendly, as was the man behind the counter who greeted us when we walked in. The water refills were sparse, but I'm not bothered by it as it's not really a big deal to get somebody's attention and just ask. Overall good experience; it's just a really nice cozy place to get some good comfort food.

I have been going to Sally's for a couple years now and it has never disappointed me. The omelets are fluffy and stuffed full of ingredients. I have gotten the spinach and feta and the feta chunks are huge. So good! I have also had the eggs Benedict which can be hit or miss at breakfast places and it was also amazing. The last time I went we got the jumbo apple pancake which is enough to feed at least 3 hungry people. It was one of the best apple pancakes ever! Service was great. Both my coffee and water were consistently refilled.

I'm sitting in Sally's right now as I write my review, that's because they have free WIFI.  The decor and food remind me a lot of Seven Brothers (review coming soon).  Oh and like Seven Brothers the service is very quick and friendly.  Classic America diner.

This place is one of your old-school restaurants with LOTS OF COMFORT FOOD and it's a great deal.  I'm eating the Roast Tom Turkey with dressing with veggies, rice pilaf, and soup.  Pretty tasty and definitely filling.

Check it out!  Bring an appetite.

Breakfast at Sally's is a long time tradition in our family. Consistently great food and full of good memories!

I have a soft spot for NY diners, Sally's is the closest equivalent. Located on Chicago's northwest side, easily accessible from the Kennedy should you want to wait out the traffic for a few hours with a bottomless cup of coffee. It is a wildly popular place to bring the entire family, expect to wait during peak breakfast hours on the weekends.

Typically I stick with the classic egg and hash browns, but I see some great looking GIANT waffles and pancakes piled with toppings, crepes, and other creations go by.

I am never disappointed with my meal or the service.

I'm surprised that Sally's doesnt have better reviews on yelp.

We've been coming here ever since we saw them featured on Check Please! a few years ago and am so glad we decided to give it a try!

Some of the food can be hit or miss but we've discovered a few items that are consistently good and better than you can find them anywhere else!

Sally's Special Crepes:  probably the best crepes I have ever tasted!  Stuffed with bananas and strawberries, covered with whipped cream and pecans - sounds like something dozens of other places have but for some reason, they taste so much more amazingly delicious here.

Pancakes:  not your average bisquick pancakes.  I dont know what it is but there's something in these pancakes (maybe cornmeal?)  that make you want to devour all of yours and everyone elses'!

Chicken sandwich: Breaded perfectly on a nice toasty bun with a side of mayo.  Again, sounds average but something about it makes it so good you can't help to finish the entire thing and yearn for more!

Service can be kind of spotty sometimes but the owner/host is always super nice and personable.  You can tell this is a family run restaurant and it's sad to see that they don't have nearly as much business now as they did when we first started coming.   I really hope they don't ever close down because we love this place!

The place is quaint and has a family feel, which I like, since not too many establishments like this are really around anymore. I've been here for lunch and it was pretty good; however, New Year's Day breakfast wasn't as fantastic as I remembered the place to be.

There was nothing wrong with anything, really. There was just nothing that stood out and made me want to come back. The food was OK (the hash browns were cut too thickly for my taste), the waitress was nice, the crowd was a typical family breakfast crowd.

If you're looking for a nice place to go with breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that's not Denny's, this would be a good place to go -- just don't expect too much more than any other establishment.

There was a time when this place was good and that time has passed!

My sunnyside egg was burned. I asked for crispy hashbrowns and got bland tasting non crispy cold ones. My wives veggie egg white omlette was just terrible, tasteless and over priced. And the pancakes were nothing special.  For the first time ever we both left food on our plate.  I would rather go hungry then ever eat here again! (and I recommend you do the same). Also, how can you screw up breakfast? I know one way...go to Sally's!

Good place for soup and sandwich.  I'm a big 'soup and sandwich' guy and the fact that they make their own soup on a daily basis is a big plus for me.   Their breakfast is pretty good too.   They make a pretty good omelette and are always willing to please when it comes to specific requests.  I can be a little picky at times and they always do as I ask.  Nothing really stands out as far as decor goes, very standard for a  place like that.   It is clean and the staff is attentive and their food is consistent.

I really wanted to like this place. The exterior is charming. And it's oh so close to home.

I should have ordered the waffles. Instead, I ordered the eggs benedict and a small bowl of oatmeal. Where to start? The Canadian bacon was thick but rubbery. The english muffin was so stale that the hollandaise sauce had no chance. Poor sauce. I made better hollandaise sauce when I was 7 years old. The oatmeal was smooth and gruel-like.

On a positive note, hubby got the pancakes which were decent. Also, our waitress was great. She was friendly and kept the coffee flowing.

I've drive out of my way to get the eggs benedict.  That's basically all this place has going for it.

Other than that the service is subpar and the other food is bland.  A big part of service for me at least is getting my water refilled.  Took them almost 20 mins.  I was trying to get someones attention but that didnt work and I tried choking my own spit down but that didnt work either.  So I just got up and walked inside the kitchen and refilled my own glass.  The mexican busboy looked at me funny and all I said to him was viente minutos no agua.  He smiled and nodded.

Nobody does it like walker bros in glenview

    Ah Sally's.

It's a Sunday morning and me and my companion are need of some breakfast fixings.  We strolled over to Sally's and it occurred to me this place just might be packed to the gills.  I saw the line and a wave of nervousness hit me.  It didn't deter us and we proceeded to the counter.

    Hostess:  "How many?"
    Me:  "Two"
    Hostess:  "Right this way?"

What?!  No wait!  Ah the bonus of a table for two.

This is the quintessential diner that serves everything under the moon.  I opted for the French toast with a side of hash browns.  My companion ordered the BLT.  The servings were very generous, especially with the French fries.  The BLT was drowning in them.
The food is decent and typical of this type of establishment.  It's good for the purpose it serves.

The refills on the coffee were fast and numerous.  So numerous as it made me suspicious as to why.

Now, the refills on the water.  Nonexistent.  Either there was a shortage that day or they used it all to make the coffee.

Marge, O Marge you missed your calling in life.....

Our waitress (marge if you didn't guess) is one of the most under-rated humans on the face of this earth!    Coffee refilled, constantly checking on us if our order was ok.  She was spot on.  Food excellent.  I ordered the french toast and pancake breakfast with a side of bacon (what else)  Very good food.  Definately coming back here......(haven't been here since I was in college, and it's memory served me well)

Ok. Decent. Not bad. Not great. IMO, very greasy. But it's a diner, so what do you expect? That's why it'll only get 2 stars. It was only what I expected. Nothing more.

When you walk up to the place it looks like a hotel on the outside, kind of cool. Then once you get inside it's like a grandmother's house , old skool cabin/country fixtures.

It's always packed. Some of the waitresses seem to hate it here.

I used to love, love, LOVE coming to Sally's a few years ago, late night after band rehearsals.  We always sat with our favorite waitress, Kim, and we could smoke cigarettes and drink coffee, and enjoy the best apple pancakes in the world!

Like I said, it's been a few years, and since then: That band broke up, I quit smoking, the State says nobody can smoke inside anymore, Kim has moved on, and I quit eating large quantities of food and drinking coffee after 10pm.  I will admit, my quality of life has improved, if only just a little bit.

    Let's see what's changed at Sally's...

I went to Sally's yesterday for lunch with my two best friends.  I warmed up with several cups of their wonderful coffee.  The waitress was a little slow and inattentive, but a quick cook and delicious food made up for the service.

Deluxe sandwiches come with fries and soup.  We had the chicken soup with shells.  Not too salty, with big cubes of chicken in there...'spretty good.  My bacon cheeseburger was probably the best bacon cheeseburger I've had in a long time.  Sally's has a magical way with bacon that eludes other restaurants.  The fries were crispy, the cole slaw was... cole slaw.  What are you gonna do?  Either you like it or you don't, Sally's isn't gonna change your mind about cole slaw, but I personally love it.

My friends were pretty much split about the place.  My one friend swears by Sally's, especially since he lives nearby.  My other friend doesn't really like anything, and they messed up his order.  But he ate the meal that they brought him, and really enjoyed it.  So I'd have to say that everything as a whole came together pretty well.  A more attentive waitstaff would have made our visit perfect.

What's changed at Sally's?  Not much - it's still a decent place to get a great meal.  In summary, you should go.  Order breakfast.  Order lunch.  Order bacon in some form, and try their pancakes and waffles!  Drink some coffee, and bring a friend.

It is so funny to walk into Sally's. It is like walking into your grandma's house. Between the decor, the smells from the kitchen, and the friendly service, eating at Sally's is like eating in a family member's home. You get a lot of food for the price and it never takes a lot of time. You can't leave Sally's without being stuffed.

Normally, a good diner like Sally's would get 3 stars from me since there are so many diners like it in the city. What gives it that extra star is the desserts. They know their desserts at Sally's! The sign in front mentions their apple pancakes, and honestly, that sign should be lit up like Vegas so that everyone knows to try them. Also, they are very evil by putting a revolving refrigerator right near the front door to show off all of the other desserts of the day. Just watching that refrigerator will pull you in like Odysseus and the Sirens.

An ok, but not great place.  Used to be significantly better, although their dinners always sucked.

Last time I was here, virtually everything I ordered was served cold or slightly above room temperature.  No surprise, this place has been cited numerous times by the city board of health for not storing and serving food at safe temperatures (last inspection, 10/16/2007, 3 critical violations)

Really great crepes and waffles. Everything on the menu is pretty affordable and the coffee isn't bad.

The service is efficient- I can't remember seeing the bottom of my coffee cup, which is epically important.

The only thing I don't really trust at Sally's are the desserts in the rotating display case. I think the same piece of pie has been ready to order since 1988.

This is my first Yelp, so why not start off with a place I highly regard and value?

For starters, the coffee here flows like wine, and that's a big plus for you coffee hounds out there. You really never run out of the stuff, and you'll find that your cup is always full. Their apple pancakes are out of this world, and are great for groups of friends. Their food is standard fare, I think, but it's all quite tasty. I usually get something different each time I'm there. Sally's is open late, so I usually get a cup (or seven) and a slice of pie a la mode with a friend whenever I feel the need to chill.

The place holds a ton of great memories for me, and the atmosphere is inviting and warm, even though it feels like you're trapped in the 1970s.  But I love that feeling. Maria is a total sweetheart, and Cruz is pretty much the coolest person there. I'll never stop coming here.

(but their apple pancake gets 5 stars)

I've come here many times over the years.I agree it was better 10 years ago, only because prices have gone up a bit.

Reminds me of places my grandmother used to take me to where they would bring you out a big basket of rolls.
The food is basically average American, home cooking like. The prices are like diners or "Greek owned" places (except the food is better and the place cleaner than Golden Nugget, which I can't stand).

Their apple pancake is famous for a reason. Big chunks of apples, not too sweet or syrupy, the crust is really good- tasty not doughy. It may taste even better the next day, heated in the microwave. The large really is, serving about 4 comfortably. It's worth it just to go there for one of those, or take 'em home.Personally I prefer their apple pancake to Walker Brother's

I also like that the place has late hours, is clean, and good for kids or groups.

I always have the eggs benedict.  Real hollandaise sauce, not the canned stuff.  The only restaurant where I have this meal.

The apple pancake is great too, although I recommend the small compared to the large.  Seems to be cooked evenly, the large has just too much apples to moisten it.  Taste yummy!!

This place really does look great from the outside and their menu has a lot to offer. Quality-wise it's a little more up-scale than let's say a Baker's Square. They are well known for their apple pancakes but I've never had them from here, either. The service is pretty good and the best part about this place is that its always open really late, most nights until 1am. So if you're in the area and you have trouble finding a nicer sit-down place when it's late out - I'd highly recommend Sally's.

People come from all around to visit Sally's.  The word spread throughout the town about their infamous apple pancakes.  Personally, I never tried them, but I did enjoy the large, classic dining room, fast service and some really good breakfast items.  And the outside of the building is so pretty to look at, that friends will think you're treating them to some high end restaurant; but it's down home all the way with reasonable prices.
