I've been going here since I was little kid with my folks. Back then they had wait times of up to 2 hours on Friday and Saturday nights!!!!! Â Lately I've only been going there for lunch or to grab a quick pint of Guinness (which they do a good job of!).
The menu has definitely changed, not the same as their old black and white beat up ones which was something I enjoyed reading. It was very old school. The menu now has less things on it, but the food is still good.
Again, definitely not what I remembered from years ago, but still a nice place to go with friends. Not going to get gourmet food, but if you're looking for a nicely decorated American type place, this is it!
Best thing about this place is the free popcorn. That being said there isn't a heck of a lot that I like about it. Service can be downright snobby at times, surprising considering the kinda place it is, but I guess you have to be a regular bar fly to get a modicum of friendliness here. And the food - eh is all I can say. It's not bad but for the price it's not great - if you're charging 8 or 9 dollars for a sandwich could you maybe give me some fries with that? Geesh. Fine for happy hour though, decent prices for beer and like I said, free (delicious) popcorn.
Review Source:Cool little pub with decent food. Â The atmosphere is like walking into an old saloon. Â It was like a mix of the NE and the old wild west. Â A little divey, but also a good mix of business and casual patrons. Â The drinks are moderately priced and the nachos were a good starter for the four of us. Â Parking isn't the easiest in the evening, but there is a parking lot behind the restaurant. Â I especially like the tables in the bar where they have a "lip" on them so if you spill your drink (after a few) it will just slop around on the table until you clean it up (no, that didn't happen on our trip there), but I could see it happening. Â
All in all - good for apps and drinks. Â I loved the train that runs around and above the bar. Â Don't see that much anymore.
This is usually our last stop for a night out in Pearl River. Â I once ordered fries here, they weren't anything special, I'll stick to the drinks.
I'm always really impressed how the bartender remembers what I order. Â I'll often go months without coming here and he still remembers what I had last time, and the time before that. Â Am I that predictable or can he really remember that long ago?
Often we'll run into some interesting characters here as well (and often the bartender can remember these people, really trying to figure out this dude! Also should really remember his name). Â From the cute guys, and old guys, buying us drinks to get us to come home with them to the girls that are out right drunk and dancing on the tables, and once I met a girl who thought it was the grandest thing that we have the same name and bought everyone drinks because of that. Â
I know they serve brunch and lunch, but after some of the nights I've had here I don't understand how anyone would ever want to do anything but come here for last call.
From Impeccable to DOWNRIGHT LOUSY food and service!
When Ro owned the Saloon, it was AWESOME!
JUST REMEMBER THE OLD DAYS WITH ME:
1. The front doors were held for you on the way into the restaurant - it made a nice touch.
2. Â Their were bathroom attendants who handed you a paper towel or offered a spray of perfume for ladies, or cologne for mens. Â It was unique service quality for a restaurant in Rockland - made it memorable!
3. Â ALL the lightbulbs were lit in the bathroom, and game room, and were replaced when they were burnt out. Â Now they just let them burn out, and don't replace them.
4. ALL of the games worked in the game room - now it is just all Broken Games in Game Room - half of everything just sits there and does not work. Â So sad - the end of an era!
5. Â Food was served until 3:32AM! Â If you wanted a late night bite in Pearl River it was the Saloon or McDonalds in Nanuet. Â I Guess it will be McDonalds or the Park Ridge Diner now, as they stop serving food ridiculusly early at like 10PM or something - it really sucks!
6. Â 2 bars were created by Ro for different purposes. Â The upper bar for entertainment, the lower bar for sports. Â Entertainment used to be almost every night of the week. Â Sure they still do karaoke, but not as much else is going on as their used to be during the course of a week.
7. Food Portions were huge and you got your money's worth! Â Now, they have magicially shrank.
So there you have it! Â A once AWESOME place, that is a mere shadow of what it once was due to owners who'd rather save money then keep it up to the standards that Ro had years ago. Â They would be busier if they left it alone, then change it!
I used to go here for Karaoke on Thurs nights with some of my friends right after I finished college. Â The crowd is definitely less than savory. Â However, they are reasonably priced, and not pretentious dbags. Â Needless to say, I don't think I'd go there anytime soon, but if you are in your early twenties, or forties, or older than that, and you like a trashy environment, and just want a beer, then it's the place for you.
Review Source:I thought this place was the Grand Saloon. Â I have been calling it that for many years. Â My wife did notice that they changed the menu a bit so maybe there are new owners too. Â We have not eaten here in quite a few years.
We went for lunch on Sunday afternoon. Â Despite the Jet's game being on the place was pretty dead at around 1pm.
We started with the 1/2 order of nachos. Â They were better than expected and were a perfect size for two to share as an appetizer. Â For just $2 more we could have gotten the full order.
My wife had a cup of Harry's chicken soup and a cheese quesadilla. Â The soup looked hearty with lots of chopped vegetables, elbow macaroni and fresh chicken. Â The quesadilla looked a bit well done. Â I did not taste either one.
I had the stuffed burger. Â Apparently, the stuffings change daily. Â Mine had mushrooms and some cheese...both barely noticeable. Â I posted a picture of my burger. Â The bun to meat ratio was bad. Â Way too much bun. Â The burger was a bit dry. Â The bun was very dry too.
We passed on dessert.
Service was awful. Â Our waitress was busy keeping one of the bar seats warm.
I had such a horrible experience here today.
My friend and I came her for lunch. We heard it was pretty good, so we decided that we would check it out. We ordered just the basics. My friend ordered a side salad with a buffalo chicken wrap and I ordered a french onion soup with a spinach salad with shrimp.
My friend said his meal was just okay. Nothing too great. My soup was okay. A little bit different the the normal french onion soups (something about the different cheese they used) and my salad was horrible. First of all the lettuce was wilted and the type of shrimp which was recommended (I was just going to get grilled) was sooooo strong/nasty. So strong/nasty that I couldn't even eat my salad. I had to send it back (and I really don't ever do that). They gave me a side salad since we were short on time.
The kicker was that they charged me full prince for the salad I originally ordered ($11) and I only ate a small side salad ($3). Now I would understand if they still charged me for the salad and took off the shrimp, but they charged me full price on everything. I have never ate at a restaurant were I disliked the food and have been charged full price...especially when they recommend the food.
The waitress was not very nice and she did not bring us refills when we asked for them. Needless to say I will never go back there again!
I've been coming to The Saloon for years upon years now. I come home from California and you better BET there will be a trip here.
Besides being the hang out for getting liquored up with my friends, I just love the food. I love the wings (25 cents on Mondays!), the skillet of mussels, the dirt burgers and most of all, the French dip. It's the BEST French dip I've EVER come across and it is the one all others will be compared to for the rest of my life.
LONG LIVE THE SALOON!
"Where Friends Meet" is the logo above the front door.
A Pearl River Institution for at least 60 years, this spacious bar has and does everything. Â You can hang in a cozy booth and jaw, you can hang by the high topped tables near the giant projection screen TV, if the weather's nice you can sit outside and enjoy a pint while watching the sun set, you can head upstairs for live music or kareoke on Friday's, OR you can hit the gameroom downstairs (though the whack-a-mole is really starting to show its age).
Food is casual. Â Portions are generous. Â Waitstaff and bartenders are friendly beyond belief. Â The free popcorn is all-you-can-eat.
Another nice touch: the place gets decked out for every single holiday; the not-so-subtle message being "every occasion is an occasion to celebrate". Â Even though the place is huge, it seems like every square inch is decorated.
The place overflows with character and characters. Â I'm checking "family friendly" because you can bring the kids for dinner. Â They'll enjoy the model trains and the gameroom.
Have fun!
