Ambiance:
Great Alternative to Hoffbrau Munchen without the inflated Lincoln Rd price.
Sit inside with tacky-yet-cozy decor or outside at the Biergarten which is nice too and has a projector screen on which they'll play your sporting event of choice, word of warning beware during rainy/summer months the mosquitos will carry you away so sit inside or wear pants, the owner will provide OFF! so that's nice if you choose to rough it. The Staff is attentive and diligent. Pretty good date spot or to catch a game with a buddy.
The Food
With a name like that it better be great Schnitzel and they deliver.. it's pretty damn good schnitzel. Sausage Sampler was great, the cheese spaetzle was superb.
The owner's from Munich and he's legit.
The Bier:
Nice German beers on tap and a good selection of German favorites
Anything from a light colored Pils to a Märzen or a Doppelbock, your beer cravings will be satisfied, served in .5L, 1L, 1.5L or 2L sizes.
Bottom Line:
The Food is Great The Beer is good and the Price is right.
Definitely coming back.
Many of you know I'm Sicilian, and other than Mussolini and Hitler we and Germans typically don't mix, and that didn't end well. This lack of natural chemistry is particularly true when it comes to cuisine. They pickle vegetables, we pick vegetables. They boil meat, we roast meat. You get it. So, the hours before my venture to Schnitzel Haus were filled with dread. However, everything in the end was wunderbar. Now, don't get me wrong, this is still not my preferred cuisine, but it was what it was, and good at doing it. Plus, the journey from Miami to Germany (a short jaunt to 79th St.) was authentic and palpable. With that said, I'll be back. No passport required.
Review Source:I've been coming here for a good 6 or 7 years, constantly smitten by the charms of Chef Alex (owner) and Judy the golden waitress - such a gem! Â What can I say; big ass beers that even I CAN'T FINISH - delish Bavarian grub; schniztel's of course shine but the little goodies (which are huge ample portions) such as the brie baked in honey, the potato pancake with lox and caviar - oh so yummy. Â Whether it's vintage 80's music videos or some quirky queer movie - Alex always turns his beautiful backyard biergarten into a place of magic and charm. Â This is really one hidden gem that must be visited to believe it's true.
Review Source:The Schnitzel house is a charming German Restaurant just across the 79th st.
causeway in Miami. it has German decor, and has a nice beer garden
out back.
they serve some of the best duck in Town as well as their fantastic German beer
which can come in huge mugs if you desire.
the owner is super friendly and the service is very good.
I'm typing this directly to the owner:
I've been to Schnitzel House six times in approximately two years. Â If I had reviewed SH after my first or second visit I would have written a 5-Star glowing review and all would be right. Â After my second visit I started recommending SH to friends and coworkers like mad. Â The 4 or 5 people who took my advice and ventured over reported back that they were not impressed. Â I was stunned because my first two visits were amazing and I could not fathom why anyone would not do jumping jacks in the middle of 79th Street on a hot summer's day for an hour out front in order to sample the food in there! Â
So I've been back a few times and can report that you're slipping....bad! Â First, there is nothing wrong with the food quality, prices, or ambiance. Â I love sitting both inside and outside in the back patio garden area...here's my issue:
I was there last night (12/06) and was greeted by a younger German male server. Â He was friendly enough and all but he led my date and I over to a table outside and left us there for 15 minutes without returning. Â Nothing was offered. Â No menus, no water, no silverware in front of us. Â Nada. Â We both felt forgotten. Â
The outside area was NOT busy. Â A few middle aged blonde women at the bar, one or two tables with a few people sitting around. Â Nothing crazy. Â I invite you to check your cameras to see what I mean. Â
After 15 minutes the server came back after we flagged him down and brought us menus. Â He appeared shocked to see us which made me believe he DID forget us. Â He came back after a few minutes and took our orders. Â He got the food right but screwed up the wine order. Â And yet still no water. Â
Luckily, for whatever reason your new server, Vanessa came over and straightened things out fast....or attempted to. Â She was pleasant, funny, professional and certainly did not forget about us. Â My date and I actually let out a muffled "hooray!" and softly clapped when she said she was taking over our table. (Ask her) Â The appetizer and main course all came out eventually and everything was delicious but really, I'm putting my foot down and screaming to the top of my voice to start taking your customer service a little more serious. Â This was the third time that I've been less-than-impressed with the service outside and may be the last time I come back unfortunately. Â
I was not in a rush or anything but it took decades for us to receive the check...we even decided to go someplace else for dessert because we both just wanted to leave at this point. Â Don't blame Vanessa, she's new and is allowed a few mistakes. Â If anything, she is the sole reason I would even consider returning again. Â Alas, I walked out of the SH feeling a bit saddened because I really DO want to love you but you just keep pushing me away.
I had dinner at this gem of a place for the first time. It was a Wednesday night and the place was empty.
The weather was great so we ate outside on the back patio - a really nice setting.
Judy, our server, was very nice, helpful and make sure that we were happy throughout our evening there.
As you would suspect, their specialty is there schnitzel - several kinds on the menu.
I decided to go with the bratwurst with red cabbage, a side of spaetzle and we shared a potato pancake.
The bratwurst was AWESOME, as was the red cabbage. The potato pancake was HUGE, crispy and very yummy. Four of us shared it.
They have my favorite beer, Erdinger, which is hard to find!
I was very impressed with this place and can't wait to go back. The only thing stopping me from going more often is the distance from my home.
But, I strongly recommend the Schnitzel Haus to anyone that loves German food!
My veal schnitzel was good. Â I did not like that they had sardines on them, but otherwise it was good....average. Â The menu was small, not too many vegetarian options. Â My goulash soup was good, a bit spicy and very average. Â There was a lot of liquid, but only 3 pieces of meat. Â We had chocolate cake for dessert, which was very rich and nice, but was slightly lacking sweetness. Â Our server was very nice. Â I think his name was Alex. Â We sat outside, given the wonderful weather, and we also were able to watch the game on the large TV. Â It started raining but no one came to our table to check on us. Â Overall I wouldn't come back. Â The food just wasn't up my alley.
Review Source:I had been passing by this place for YEARS and never knew or expected that it'd be anything like it is, like other Yelpers say, it doesnt have an impressive exterior nor is it even in a nice area. There is the option to eat inside or in the biergarten, a cute outdoor patio with string lights and potted plants where they play German pop music all throughout the night.
We ate outside and were seated immediately. My significant other ordered das boot, a 2 litre, boot-shaped mug of beer, which is the most German I've seen anyone feel or look outside of actually being German - such a novelty! Made for great pictures.
I ordered a chicken natur schnitzel, a breaded chicken cutlet in a light lemon sauce which was just so tender and omg delicious (and those mashed potatoes! yum). My better half ordered a crispy duck plate that he enjoyed so much he seriously considered ordering a second one.
For dessert we ordered a plum tarte a la mode.....can I just say that even if all the other food had been godawful, this place would be getting at least three stars just for how incredibly great that plum tarte was. This place is worth breaking diets, people.
When we walked in there at around 7pm on a Friday, the place looked quite dead. And we thought- "guess this place isn't too popular". About an hour and a half later, the outdoor patio livened up and the indoor space was PACKED and we knew why. This was to the point that our waiter forgot to bring us silverware twice (but it was totally forgivable, because it got real packed! The problem here may have been that they were a bit understaffed, however, so I guess I'd recommend going here on a weekday just to avoid that at all).
I have to say my big-ish complaint is that you don't expect it to be as pricey as it is. The meal ended up costing about $50/person which is really surprising when you suggest going to what you think is a random, hole-in-the-wall that lies in a sketchy party of town (so sketchy, that if you were to go to the neighborhood directly one block north, you could wait around and see a drug-deal sketchy).
Kitchy and super cute on the patio.
I took the advice of yelpers and enjoyed the potato pancakes with smoked salmon, caviar, sour cream and applesauce (pricey at $18 or $19) but they were delicious!
Also enjoyed a liter of Paulaner Oktoberfest. Â Yummy! Â
We met some friends there and headed over to Shuckers for wings. Â Next time, I'm staying here for a delicious dinner!
A nice experience - great for date night - especially on a cool winter evening...
Oh Schnitzel Haus, with your beer and you sausages and your....I forgot, had too much beer.
I really like this place. I have been here a few times. The last time was recent. After being a bit turned off by the Sam Adams Oktoberfest celebration in Brickell, I decided to stir my group north. To the Schnitzel Haus. After all I was feeling a bit German. If that's a thing.
We got in and got seated right away. I asked for "Das Boot" and my go-to mix sausage combo to start. The sausages are very good and they go great with drinking beer. As the boot got emptier I got hungrier (weird, right?!?!) so I asked for the Holstein Schnitzel. A piece of meat, breaded and fried, topped with a fried egg and mashed potatoes. What else could you ask for, when you have had a liter of beer and working on your second?
Schnitzel Haus is unlike any other place in Miami. And not only has great beer and good food but, the service is great too. Every time I come here I get great service but this time was excellent. The entire staff waited patiently until we decided to leave well past their closing time. And our waitress was very helpful and extremely patient.
Best German in Miami. Â Food was very good, from perfect potato pancakes, nice sausages, Â to tasty red cabbage and sauerkraut. Â Ambiance is fun. Â We had a particularly nice night in the breezy biergarten in back. Â Beer list is by no means extensive, but the selections are good and cover most beer types. If you enjoy dark beers the Koestritzer Schwarzbier was particularly nice.
Some people have said it was expensive, but our bill for four people before tip was just over $80. Â That's very reasonable in my book. Â Also the portions are HUGE, we ended up taking about a third home.
The only reason i didn't give it 5 stars was the service. Â While are waitress was very nice, she was not around that much and it took longer than usual to get our meals.
That being said it was worth the wait and if you're not in hurry it's a great little place.
First time in this place.,, girlfriend and daughter were raving about it for a long time and finally we had the chance to go...
Firs impressions are everything...the inside is full of character but the decor is way outdated. , hanging plastic flower crown, full of dust, found 4 hairs stuck to the tablecloth. And I'm sorry, just because of that, my appetite was totally gone.
Order a beer, which was really good, but paying 15+ for a breaded veal Schnitzel was just crazy... It was just the breaded veal and mash potatoes...
Maybe if I would have been on the patio, I wouldn't have seen the hairs or even pay attention to the rest of the place...
Definitely would not be going to this restaurant again. Sorry for all those Schnitzel Haus lovers out there, but I'm not!
This is as authentic German as you get. Owner is straight out if central casting. Beer garden is nice as is their indoor space. Â Decoration and vibe makes me feel like I'm back in Munich. The three mains I've tried are the pork medallions, spatzel, and chicken schnitzel. Pork is a phenomenal standout. Baked Brie with honey and garlic appetizer was awesome. Beer is the best. You have to order on draft.
Service was poor though. The garlic shrimp was served without bread. We had to ask for it and by the time the bread arrived, the shrimp was cold. 2nd problem: I saw I was charged $22 for the pork medallions instead of $18. Waitress said that is because I ordered the medallions with pears and she showed me on menu where it was $22. I told her I ordered the regular pork medallions and did not even know pear option was available. Moreover, I did not even eat the pears because I did not know what the tiny cubes were as they had an unfamiliar texture--I thought they might have been sweet onions. She did not own up to her mistake.not sure if it was intentional on her part. Â If not for this I would have given four stars.
This place is delightfully weird. Â First of all, let me say that the food is solid and the beer is good. Â Further, there are not too many hofbrau's in Miami and I like this place much more than the one on Lincoln Rd. Â The German owner is affable, kind, and very engaging. Â While the place is in a sketchy part of 79th street (I should say a particularly sketchy part of 79th street) the backyard biergarten is inviting and makes you forget all about that.
I agree with Carla B's review of the place being described as "kitschy." Â Delightfully Kitschy.
The menu contains typical German favorites. Â The pork shank is a standout. Â My only problem with the menu, and this is typical of German restaurants everywhere, is that the food is kind of expensive. Â While the food is very good, I always think to myself if I'm going to pay X dollars I might as well go to Michael's or where ever... To be fair I just might not like German food as much as I think then. Â That being said, this is a great place to go if you really want some good German food. Â I typically go to the bar and drink a liter of beer (though you can also get the 2L boots) and have some sausages. Â
T
Just darling! Kitschy, with tons of personality, and best of all, great personable service and DELICIOUS German (Bavarian) food!
Some people confuse cheesy with kitschy. Allow me to enlighten you: cheesy is best described as a bizarre mix of not enough effort, quality and purpose put in, yet trying to pass for something that it is not. THAT is NOT what Schnitzel House is. Simply and reasonably put, not all restaurant décor has to resemble that of a Japanese spa, especially if we're talking about a German restaurant. The colors, the golden accents, the sky-like ceiling, the flowers and the piano whisper how you should feel when you're here. They say: "Live a little. You can't afford a luxurious trip to Europe, but that's no reason not to pretend you're not in Florida."
Trust me: you could drive by this place forever and never even know it's there, because it doesn't have an impressive appearance from the outside; but once you're inside, it wraps you in, and once you eat, you'll be shopping for a treadmill on eBay from your iPhone before you can say, "Danke, Carla, you ruined my waistline master plan." Oh, shut up, Mary! You know that Speedo has to go anyway.
The atmosphere is cozy, intimate and speak-easy. You can meet with a friend and do that lovely and long overdue catch up; or have a first date if Mister Maybe showed no signs of an I.Q. of 60. You can dine inside, but if Miami temperature allows, try the enchanting outdoors seating area in the back! They also have a bar outside as well as indoors, and the draught beer I had was absolutely perfect. Had I not eaten as much as i did, I would've had a second beer.
The owner's name is Alex, and he's a people pleaser -- that kind of owner who gets all excited when you ask him to recommend something from the menu. Very personable and knows what to suggest. I always find it rewarding when I visit a restaurant whose owner is proud and excited about.
But what am I doing?! Let's talk about my self-inflicted food coma!
They have a strange sounding yet seductive appetizer, the Honey Garlic Brie. Now, true: I went with my gayer-than-a-Macy's-Day-Parade friend, so impeccable breath was not an issue for me -- and yay for that! If you're not planning to kiss someone for the first or 10th time ever, and you're a fan of cheese and garlic, please order this appetizer. It's your typically baked brie, only sprinkled with roasted garlic bits and bathed in silky honey. Smother a portion of that on the complimentary warm rolls your server brings you, and you'll be in heaven.
As enticing as the Potato Pancakes sounded, as an entrée I was really inclined towards the Wiener Schnitzel -- stop smiling -- which is none other than breaded top round veal cutlet goodness. Warning, though: the Wiener Schnitzel is huge and meant to be shared -- and that wasn't a Hallmark-friendly line, at all.
No, seriously now, I also tried my friend's Chicken Schnitzel, and they both had in common that, although they were breaded, they were not oily, which leads me to assume they were baked. Just perfect!
Portions for entrées here are very generous, so you may wind up having German for lunch the next day. I really try but always manage to sound dirty on this review. My fakest apologies.
Ah, Spätzle...! It's pasta's tiny cousin, and better than mashed potatoes as a side dish for your Schnitzel. It had a little bit of parsley and just such a wonderful texture. If you haven't tried it, trust me: if you like pasta, you will like it.
You'd think after eating like this AND having beer, a girl would have a conscience heavy enough to kill her feet...! Well, I wasn't wearing high heels. Â ;-) Â 'Homemade Apple Strudel served with Real Whipped Cream' would be the official name of the perfect sweet ender to such a meal, and you should definitely make space for it, too.
In short, great food, warm atmosphere and friendly service fits everybody's idea of a great time. German food is such a rarity, particularly in South Florida, and Schnitzel Haus didn't make it to the local Channel 2's food show "Check Please South Florida" for being nothing short of noteworthy: http://youtu.be/l4Qqu-60… Do yourself a favor and swing by!
Schnitzle Haus easily rivals the food from my grandmother's kitchen. Â
Schnitzle Haus offers up traditional German fare like sauerbraten and chicken paprikash, but I was also pleased to see a touch of Bavarian and Austrian influences like the holstein schnitzle (topped with a fried egg). Â
Schnitzle Haus does spaetzle right... first boiled, then sauted with lots of butter. Â Their cucumber salad took my back to childhood.... sweet with lots of dill, just like Grandma used to make. Â
My grandma was the best damn German cook around... so German food is not something I take lightly. Â Schnitzle Haus is the only place I've found that comes even remotely close to the meals I grew up with. Â Five stars all the way!
Alex has the best German Biergarten in Miami, no doubt about it. What he needs is more folks and more music on the weekends outside. I love to glide in on a Friday or Saturday night and have a cigar out back with a couple of Oktoberfest.
Once you start eating here on a regular basis, you do feel like you are amongst friends. Most of the regular German classic meals like Wiener Schnitzel and many of the brats are divine. I have a couple of items that are nice price point items and things you could maybe come in and eat at the bar just to check the place out. They make a nice bowl of goulash, which has a lot of pork in it for $6. Â They make a sausage/brats plate on the appetizer list for about $11.
While everything on the menu is solid, most menu items are in the $15-$20 range but every night Alex, the owner of the restaurant and Worldly Chef makes several specials nightly that change. Â You might have beef brisket one night, the next could feature frog legs, the next a stuffed pork chop fit for a king. Â Read the little chalkboard when you walk in, usually some very good items on there, the staff typically can explain anything. Â The prices on the specials unlike many other restaurants run pretty close to the prices on the regular menu items.
With drinks, meals, and dessert, a couple is going to spend at least $60...meals $15-$20 a piece, beers run about $6.50 for 1/2L to $12-$13 for the mosk size, but you can go a lot of ways when you come in. Â Some nights I just want some brats and a couple beers, other nights I want a full meal. I always leave happy and Alex has a great support team under him running things. Love this place.
Has to be the best German biergarten in miami. Love the newly renovated outdoor patio. Fun Christmas decoration, when it's the season. Â You have to try the baked brie with honey and garlic. Another must eat is their potato pancakes, traditional with sour cream and applesauce. Beer selection is fantastic; the Oktoberfest beer is excellent, when in season. Otherwise they have excellent beer selections. Sizes range from large to gargantuan, in true German fashion.
Review Source:WOW! I went here to celebrate my birthday with friends. The inside is magical. The minute you step inside it is like you are transported into some quaint house in Germany. We ordered the "big" beers and oh boy, they were not kidding. They were $12 each but I didn't need more than one. We shared food. We had the potato pancakes which were delicious and the sausage platter. The sausage platter was a bit pricey for the 5 pieces of sausage that came on it. Please let me say that price matters not to me in this place. The service, the food, the beer and the ambiance are impeccable. Also, there is a gorgeous Bier Garten outside, in the back with its own bar and seating. While we ate inside, I am definitely looking forward to going back on a cool night and enjoying the "outside" experience.
Review Source:Highly recommend for huge beers out in their beer garden with a sausage combo. It's off 79th street, so the location doesn't seem ideal, but they do have a parking lot next door and it's relatively quiet in that area.
The food is good, especially the chicken schnitzel - its delicious! Don't miss the Oktoberfest beer.
They don't accept AMEX, btw.
I am a sucker for ambiance, and Schnitzel Haus should win a prize for being such a cutie. My date and sat in their garden area, which was full of romantic lighting and garden plants. Very, very pretty. They also had a projection screen above the bar that was playing music videos (German ones, of course!) at a low enough volume to be distracting.
The dinner started out well. We had a nice table, we ordered some very good beers. I wanted one of their boots of beer (das boot!!!) but decided against embarrassing myself. We ordered our food and the appetizer, baked brie, was pretty darn good.
But things went down hill after that. Our entrees were supposed to come with salads. They never came. I ordered a rare steak, it came out well done. I had to wait another 25 minutes for another steak... This one was also not rare, it was medium, but at this point I gave up and tried to eat it.
The food was just not very good. My steak, in addition to being overcooked, was covered in a fennel seed sauce that was so strong it was distracting. The cabbage I ordered as a side was smothered in so much Cinnamon it was inedible, and my date's pepper schnitzel was just not good. It was covered in a sweet and sour sauce that would have been more at home at a Chinese restaurant.
I pointed out to the waiter that he forgot the salads and he tried to bring them out after we were done eating. Even getting the rest of my steak to go (do dogs like fennel seeds?) turned into confusion. Just an all-around bad experience. The manager did offer a free glass of champagne, but I was a little too ticked at this point to stay any longer. It would have been nice if he had taken the steak off the bill because that place was not nearly good enough to justify the $100+ bill.
I am so disappointed! So many other people love this place. And it really is pretty. I just wish the food and service lived up to the ambiance. Maybe one day I can give this place another try.... just too traumatized at the moment.
Almost a 5 star rating....
This restaurant is a gem in the middle of a scary area. Was actually a bit afraid of parking my car behind the restaurant...
The restaurant itself is very nice looking. Decorated authentically with some kiche touches that give it a very cool vibe.
The food was sensational. We had a large pary of 8 people and tried alot of different items on their menu: sausages, schnitzels, various appetizers and deserts. ALL were outstanding! When your 4 year old grandson tells you the sausages he just finished eating are the best food he's ever eaten, that says something!!
Here's why we didn't give the restaurant 5 stars... The Service. In a word, sub par. The waitress was VERY nice and knowledgeable. However, either they don't have enough staff or the staff they do have is just too slow. Not once during the meal did our water glasses get refilled and it was only after flagging someone down twice that we were finally able to get drink refills. And we had to wait 30 minutes for the check (15 minutes to flag our waitress down and then 15 more minutes to actually get the check). To top it all off, their credit card machine wasn't working. They told me "it is an old machine and sometimes doesn't work properly...." Here's a clue: buy a new machine!!! Luckily we had the cash to pay the bill (don't you think if they have this issue they should tell people BEFORE you order???)
Fix your credit card machine and either hire more staff or replace the ones you have and you'll get your 5th star.
One step inside and you are instantly transported to a different land, way far away from the world outside, you'd think you walked through a portal and dropped off somewhere in Bravaria.
I came here on a Saturday with a friend, his wife, and some of her co-workers.
We came for dinner but got a show.. but more on that later.
My friend started with a beer, his wife and entire liter of the stuff.
Now that's a lot of beer.
For an appetizer, we ordered potato pancakes. They were quite good, very home made and for my main entree I ordered the pork Jaeger Scnitzel, which I enjoyed.
But what made the night was the entertainment.
Not the most talented guys I've seen, but what they lack in talent they make up in hilarity and enthusiasm.
Early on they started with pretty standard songs, but as time went on things fell down a slippery slope and into show tunes! At one point during our meal, one of them decided to go around with the microphone and make us help with the singing.
Needless to say things got a little weird but it was all in good fun, and certainly worth another visit in the near future.
First time here and we ate in the beer garden out back. It was just after 8 and the area was empty except for my group, but started to fill up a bit after.
We enjoyed the potato pancakes and I had "The Very Original," a sampling of a few items on the menu. Delicious!
This place definitely requires a return visit. Eat in the beer garden at night if you can!
The only authentic German restaurant in South Florida and a longtime favorite of mine! Â Actually, it's kind of hard to believe that Schnitzel House hasn't been reviewed often. Â The Victorian era dining room and bar is quaint and authentic without being cliche and the fresh German brew on Tap rocks! Â
The house specialty is the Corn Flake Chicken Schnitzel that will keep you coming back for more! Â The chicken is completely juicy and tender while the corn flake coating is crispy and flavorful and complements the obligatory mashed potatoes perfectly. Â Â It's a fantastic signature dish, totally filling, and unique!
Their sausages are another outstanding item which can be had themselves as a meal, an appetizer or a sampler. Â There is the veal bratwurst which everyone is familiar, but also some authentic others such as Garlicwurst, Knoblauchwurst (spicy) and Baurenwurst (pork and beef sausage) on the menu. Â
They've got a selection of bottle beers and wines, and a beer garden in the back for outside dining - recommended during the winter... Â For the old school Upper East Siders this restaurant is actually the second incarnation of the Edelweiss formerly located on Biscayne & 26th Street (Alex is still running it too). Â The inside dining room has a bar and maintains the kitschy but actually authentic Victorian decor that many modern Munchen drinking houses display. Â
Rain or shine, this beergarten and restaurant is a great place for a date, a business meeting or anytime you've got a real thirst for beers and brats to satisfy!
This place is one hell of a find. The food and beer are outstanding.
The decor / music makes you instantly forget you are in Miami.
We both had a liter of the Paulaner Oktoberfest they had on tap.
We opted for an Oktoberfest skillet for two which consisted of a red cabbage, sauerkraut brat, smoked porkchop and a frikadeller (which they called a bavarian slider). My wife commented she hadn't had one since she her grandmother made them 30 yrs ago. Even the kraut and the red cabbage tasted homemade. The German owner / cook Alex is quite a character which only adds to the overall appeal of the place. My wife definitely loved the Tina Turner and Madonna concerts playing on the tvs over the bar. This place also has a nice outdoor patio which we took a look at. Definitely a place to hit up in a couple weeks as the weather gets nicer.
Let me start out with a disclaimer: my only experience with German food involved a trip to Epcot, so this was definitely a first for me.
Dinner for two on a Sunday night was a success. Â It was a slow night, but perfect for us because it felt as if we'd rented the place out! Â
Ordered honey garlic brie (yumm), potato pancakes (drizzle the leftover brie honey on them), a sausage platter, and two desserts - streudel & apricot crepes (which induced a happy dance). Â Also - several large glasses of really good beer (altho I couldn't tell you the name!)
This is the kind of place locals rave about, in the kind of location that will throw you off if you haven't heard good things about it beforehand. Â Go here enough, and it'll start to feel like home, and they'll always treat you like family. Â
Next time I'll make sure to check out the beer garden.
While I agree with the fact the neighborhood leaves a bit to be desired, do not let it detract from the restaurant's overall experience. Â The interior is crowded with memorabilia, photos and knick-knacks. Â The seating is comfortable. Â The service is superb.
Now to the critical issues... Â FOOD! Â It is OUTSTANDING! Â I spent a few months in Germany, not enough to make me an expert. Â I do know one thing when I taste something I like. Â The Schnitzel with crushed pretzel is more than a meal, as were the other dishes served. Â Next, the beer. Â What can I say? Â Authentic German beer served in very large steins. Â Suffice to say you should not drive to soon after finishing one of these. Â Last, dessert ach der lieber, the Strudel was to die for.
Ignore the area and prepare to let your belt out because the food and drink are great and plentiful.
Dieser platz ist in ordnung...I mean this place isn't bad. This was the first German restaurant, I've been to. So I have nothing to really compare. This place is kinda in far out for me. It's close to what I consider Little Haiti. It's not that great of a neighborhood, but they have plenty of parking in the back. I can only describe it as a cute little restaurant. It was all decked out with red Valentine's Day decor which I assume it isn't always like this.
We started with an appetizer of red cabbage and 3 sausage plate. The sausage was really good. It was cooked perfectly and a good start to a meal. The cabbage had a good vinegar taste that I was looking for.
The place is pretty empty for a Friday night and it makes me wonder if all their ingredients are fresh. There were 4 of us. I was the only one to order beer. The other 3 ordered different sodas (sprite, coke, diet coke) and they all had 3 Â completely flat soda. Almost as if it was weird flavored water (the most flat soda, I've ever had). The beer was good. They had a small variety of German beers (I've seen better). I ordered the Hefeweizen and Oktoberfest they had on tap. I like how you can order a giant boot if you have a whole table drinking.
The schnitzel wasn't that great. Maybe I just don't like schnitzel. Is it suppose to feel and taste like a microwaved Salisbury steak Banquet frozen dinner ? If it is then its spot on. I thought it was basically a lightly breaded and fried veal (or different meat). My girl's chicken schnitzel wasn't bad (chicken schnitzel in cornflakes). The breading was kinda weak though. I just hate a breading that completely falls apart when you start cutting up the meat. I had the Pork Munich. The beer sauce was tasty, but I just couldn't get over the microwaved type meat texture. Which is the same texture of the schnitzel of the other 2 guests.
The service was great though. We had a nice waiter complete with a German accent. The rest of the staff was very welcoming. I would come back, but I would stick to beer and sausage. You can't go wrong with that combination.
This was the best Wiener Schnitzel west of Salzburg. Period.
In 2007 we went on an Austria and Germany tour, and we tried Schnitzel in several different places, thus I modestly must admit that I know my Schnitzel. And my Wiener.
Thus let's look at the facts about this place:
1) The veal Schnitzel was excellent. Try other meats if veal is not your preferred meat when you go hunting in the Black Forest.
2) Get a German beer in those huge stein glasses. You either will be happy or drown in it. Yes, it is this big.
3) Dessert: try the potato pancakes or the apple frites. Best way to go from the Atkins Diet to the Das-is-gut Diet.
Service was very good, our waiter spoke German and was very friendly and attentive.
A bit on the pricey side, but with the Euro so high, who cares? Pretend you are in Salzburg at a cafe in the Mozart park.
Location is odd, not that good. Suggestion: drive to the place from Miami Beach instead from I-95, you will avoid a not-so-nice drive trough a shady neighborhood.
Sit outside. Usually the weather is nice and warm, very different from the Matterhorn.
In summary: a bit of Sound of Music ambiance and great food. And go easy on the beer, you want to keep your wiener in your lederhosen!
The food is extremely authentic german, and very good. We had the Veal Schnitzel, natural style, which was superb. Also had the sausage platter (didn't see the exact name, was recommended by the waiter), which was just excellent. Came with a variety of german style sausages, some dipping sauces (a type of sweetened mustard), and sauerkraut. I like a good sausage (please, spare me the sex jokes...), so this was a real treat.
Incidentally, the sauerkraut was really really well done.
We sat outside with our dog, and the service was friendly and attentive. No problems recommending.
Two entrees, a couple of beers - ~$50.
Hidden? Yes. Gem? Kinda.
The beer was good. The host/waitress were friendly. Sitting outside was nice. I was there with a group of four. We ordered latkes to start (which were good), then various schnitzel dishes. Everyone seemed to enjoy. Â
The drawbacks? A little too expensive for what it is. $16+ for entrees is a bit much. And the credit card machine was down, so we had to pay cash. Kinda annoying to leave the table and drive to an ATM. Other than that, I left happy.
Oh ya. The music they play outside is HORRIBLE. Ask them to turn it down and they will.
Schnitzel House has a great ambience inside and out, looks just like the real deal.
However, I have a few gripes about this place.
1. I expected more beer variety, they only had four. (for a place that has a beer garden?)
2. Service was horrible. We had to remind our waitress we wanted to order. We, also had to remind her we wanted water and the glasses were dusty.
3. The food was good but I cannot justify 15+ dollars for a plate of breaded chicken and mashed potatoes.
This place would be great if it was more of a laid back spot, instead it tries to come off as a pricy spot on 79th street.
What a hidden gem. Such a cool ambiance. Awesome beer and service. We tried all sorts of stuff and it was all excellent. German food is certainly underrated.

BTW the proper spelling of this place is Schnitzel Haus
Great little spot for some good German grub and brew. Â They also have a beer garden in the back!!
Outdoor seating in this town is always key. Â They're a dog friendly place too. Â So I walked over there with my dog and a friend and we enjoyed the beer garden out back. Â The service was quick and friendly. Â I would definitely go there again.
A very authentic German restaurant. I tried the Veal Schnitzel with mashed potatoes and it was delicious. They also serve chicken schnitzel which you can order a number of different ways including with a corn flakes breading.
They serve a variety of German Beers. I tried their Octoberfest lager. We also ordered potato pancakes that were served with apple sauce and sour cream (very delicious). Their salad had green beans and red beets. For dessert, apple strudel and ice cream.
I understand it's owned by the same owner of the now closed Edelweis.
It's located on the left hand side of 79th Street, just East of Biscayne. There is free secure parking in back.
