A small group of West Africans and I were looking for a place to go on a Friday night, maybe have a few beers, listen to some African music, and do a little dancing. Â We read a review here that said Friday night was African night, so we thought we'd check it out. Â
Well, there were no other Africans in the place, no African music, and $5 Tecate. Â We quickly moved on. Â
This may well be a good dive bar choice for Latinos in the neighborhood, but there is NOT an African night on Friday.
I have been to this place a couple of times because i live right around the corner...yes it is a latin bar...it is a dive bar...the food is actually pretty good for a dive bar, the prices are not expensive but they are not cheap...the bathrooms were clean which i respect....all shots are $10...i think that is the strange part.....i started off with jose cuervo and realized that i could get parton and GM for the same price.... Â service was actually good, they made sure i had what i needed and cleaned up after every shot....
if you are looking for a latin spot (98 percent of the people don't speak english including the servers/bartenders)
decent food, and bachatta or reaggeton  then this is your latin dive bar
Serengeti suffers from schizophrenia. Â The owner is Kenyan, and they may once have drawn a large African crowd, but that's now relegated to Friday's African night. Â Despite its name and the murals of African wildlife painted on the walls leading up to the second floor, Serengeti nowadays caters primarily to a Latin clientele. Â The entrance on Georgia Ave is easy to miss and leads you down to a poorly ventilated basement bar. Â The upstairs has another bar and dance floor, but is only open on weekends. Â On a recent visit, while service was good, the room was sparsely furnished with three or four female "servers" sitting at the end of the bar. Â The menu is standard Salvadorian/Mexican fare, as are most of the bottled beers (no drafts). Â A Modelo Especial was $5 which doesn't even qualify it for cheap dive bar status!
