Just got back from there--went out for a dinner date and, well, the underwhelm started with the martini and extended through the food. Â The seared tuna came out cold; the steak was so-so, and the creme brulee ... tasted as if someone needs to review the list of ingredients (as in: Â Vanilla pudding mixed with whipped cream or something like that). Â I really really wanted to like the place; the decor is really beautiful. Â The food, sadly, wasn't. Â Not going back.
Review Source:The silver spoon is one of my go-to's for dining in Valpo. The decor is very clean and modern and the whole ambiance is very relaxing. I love to go there for brunch. All of their food is fresh and doesn't leave you walking away hungry (or overly full). The staff is very kind and helpful. Highly recommend.
Review Source:It's a very trendy and upscale place for breakfast and lunch. Loved the simple menu with great fresh and local food that is well prepared . What a pleasant and attentive staff they have working there too. The ambience is chic with such thoughtful decor that makes it a great to use as a venue for those special occasions also. The Silver Spoon is such a great addition to Valpo.
Review Source:The place itself is nicely decorated and the ambiance is perfect. They have great breakfast/brunch items, and this is my go-to place taking visiting friends/family. They are very accommodating with substitutions in omlettes (egg white only or three eggs, with one yolk and egg whites, etc.) and with things like fruit instead of homestyle potatoes. I enjoy dining places where they go out of their way to ensure you have a great dining experience. I wish they were open for dinner during the week. That is my only gripe!
Review Source:We hadn't remembered reading anything about this place before we tried it this morning, although we are fairly local. We are instant fans. The decor is clean and smart. Our server was personable and professional. We liked the fact that the food is fresh, real, and local. My husband has a tough time finding coffee he likes, but liked this version very much, and I was pleased that they also know how to brew a decent cup of tea (loose tea in a charming infuser, piping hot, and enough for a hearty cup plus). We are adding it to our list of breakfast spots, and look forward to coming back at a time there is music.
It has been awhile since we have been back here for breakfast. This time I could not give the restaurant as high a ranking. Although the coffee and tea are still great, we'd like to suggest a few areas for improvement.
Although there was only one table occupied when we were seated, it took an amazingly long time for our food to come. When it did, it was cold, and in fact, unpalatable enough that I had to ask to have it warmed up. We got the impression that the dishes were left to sit while the hollandaise sauce for the Eggs Benedict was prepared. Putting the plates in a warming area, even warming the plates ahead of time, might have helped. On the plus side, the eggs were hand-poached, but there's not much that is appetizing about a cool poached egg.
Although the waitress was attentive about setting us up with tea and coffee, and attentive about refilling the coffee, she did not come back in a timely manner once she had served the food to find out how things were going. She was in the room, but busy about another task, and because we could not get her attention without causing a minor event, I had to get up with my plate and seek her assistance for warming the food. There were only three other tables in use; if she were tuned in to scanning the room, she would have easily seen us trying to get her attention.
Lastly, and (this is a more global gripe), would American waitstaff please get a little more tuned in to asking tea drinkers if they would like a warm-up/refill as they do coffee drinkers? I was asked if I wanted more tea only as the waitress put down the bill.
We would like to give this restaurant more of a recommendation, but not probably until these glitches are corrected.
I was here several times for breakfast. Each time the service was surly, the food was both average and served cold. Cold omlettes are not edible! There were no other customers in the restaurant and three cooks in the kitchen, yet the wait time for the food was over a half and hour. This place is a disaster, I won't be returning.
Review Source:We were a party of 4 that arrived at 8:00 a.m. opening so the restaurant was empty. Â The coffee was not ready. Â The breakfast for 4 took 30 minutes although there were 3 men in the kitchen. Â The food was cold. Â My english muffin was not toasted. Â The potatoes were so salty they were not edible. Â The cheese in my omelet was in cold chunks. The bacon tasted "off". Â There was not one single redeeming thing about the breakfast. Â That was true for all four of us. Â I hate to think how bad it would have been if the place had been full. Â We will never return because it was our second bad experience.
Review Source:Food was mediocre. Ordered the Stuffed French Toast which was bland and soggy. My boyfriend ordered one of the skillets, which had fresh ingredients, but the way it was mixed as potatoes, onions, meat, peppers, and cheese made it unsophisticated. The coffee wasn't good and there wasn't freshly squeezed orange juice! Won't come back here for breakfast.
Review Source:The menu is such a disappointment. Â I was so excited that a "fancy" breakfast place was coming to downtown Valpo and I looked forward to a progressive menu on par with Chicago places. Â Where are the vegan options? Â How hard is it to have a tofu scramble for crying out loud? Â And good hash browns? Â Their coffee is excellent but the good news stops there. Â You can't even get a soy latte.
To Silver Spoon's credit, all their items are made with cage-free eggs so that's a plus.
If you're vegan, go across the street to Roots Organic Juice bar then get a pastry item or sandwich at Blackbird Cafe.
Nice decor. Friendly staff.
Food was underwhelming. My "pancake-discerning" 6-year old did not like the pancakes and refused to eat them. She never turns down a pancake.
My other daughter got grilled cheese. She ate it but it was underwhelming.
My husband said the pulled pork sandwich was bland. So much for the positive reviews.
My salad with roasted beets was average at best. The beets needed to be roasted for a lot longer as they were hard and did not seem fresh. The major deciding factor for me was when they said the sweet potato fries (which had rave reviews) were sold out but the truck had just come. I thought they were in the back slicing potatoes but NOPE they were dumped from a bag and put into the fryer. Frozen and pre-sliced. Not worth it!
I would try this again (hubs would not) but I would make a different food selection for sure.
Silver Spoon is located in a beautiful spot in downtown Valparaiso. I was waiting for a gf to meet me but she got lost so I proceeded without her. I could have ordered breakfast but ordered a sandwich instead because it was after 1pm.. I had the mediterrainean sandwich with spicy fries. Very delicious. The breakfast menu looked fabulous and if I am ever in the area, I will try it.
Review Source:1. Â I am not an employee.
2. Â I am from the area and am so happy for this addition to our hometown.
Silver Spoon is a small, beautifully decorated restaurant with a great staff and even better food. Â There are always specials here for breakfast and brunch. Â There is entertainment on Sundays. Â The food is very nicely done - skillets, omelettes and brunch drinks (mimosas, bloody mary). Â Their menu is imaginative and well done. Â I've not had a bad breakfast there in all the times I've been there.
This is a favorite spot for my book club and they easily accommodate my group (yeah, we also roll like this, Chicago) who happily sits in the window spot during the winter and colder months. Â (The window spot is a lovely area with pillows all around it). Â They are more pricey than other places in town, but I think it's worth it. Â They don't serve the same greasy home fries and eggs you can get everywhere else. Â Give this place a try, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Â
** Â I suggest the disgruntled yelper is a former employee.
This place is awfull!!! The food is crap and so is the service.. The owner doesnt care about the food sucking she just wanted a place of her own to brag about..too bad it sucks... I dont believe any of the good reviews...staff wrote is my guess.... Dont eat their!!! this place has a 33% on urbanspoon.. The dive bars in valpo have way better ratings then that!!
ohhh and theirs a place in Chicago called "Bake'n & Egg's" and well it seems SS just ripped them off....but with gross cold food...
I attended a rehearsal dinner t the Silver Spoon. The venue was fantastic! The staff was not only friendly, but they catered to our every desire. They did not force the nights events or dictate our schedule, they were professional and respectful. I even had a special dining request and they had no problem providing me with what I asked for.
The ambiance is casual, trendy and fun. There is a TV in the bar for sports updates and a guitarist in the corner for conversational volume music. I would happily host a dinner at this establishment.
Just what Valpo needs - a trendy breakfast / lunch joint with great food. We've pretty much cased the entire Valpo and Merrillville area for weekend breakfast and lunch spots and they have an over abundance of diners and chain restaurants. We're soo excited to find The Silver Spoon - thanks to niece Brianna.
When we arrived with a larger group of ten - Yeah, that's how we roll in Valpo - they were unable to accommodate us immediately, but the wait was very enjoyable as they had a piano player and a singing waiter. I fired up to the bar and got mimosas for the special ladies in our group and I tried the legendary bloody Mary. I'm not a huge bloody Mary drinker, but I'll be back for another. Silver Spoon was rockin' a five star review at this point.
We had three toddlers in our group and when were seated they had already put out plastic cups for the kids. I've not seen this before, but it was a nice touch and shows that they're paying attention.
We had a long wait for our food and I remember commenting that my Yelp review was down to four stars. And then... The food came. It was worth the wait! The highlight for me was the sweet potato chips - delicious!
It is definitely the best breakfast in the area. I don't think it's on par with Chicago's best breakfast spots, so don't jump in the car Chicagoans, but it's in the same ballpark and a welcomed addition to Valpo!
I think this is easily the best restaurant in Valpo.
The pulled pork is radical (and I don't say that lightly; I'm marrying a southerner). For breakfast they have great coffee, amazing homemade jams, and incredibly flavorful potatoes on the side. High-quality ingredients. Excellent service. Easily as good as the best brunch places in Chicago (and cheaper, too).
Discovered this place during Popcorn Fest. Â Had lunch there and finally convinced my husband to go for breakfast. I enjoyed the bourbon stuffed French toast & he loved the downtown skillet. Both dishes were satisfying & the coffee was fantastic! The wait staff is very attentive. It was a little pricey for breakfast, but they use local/organic ingredients as much as possible. It's true what they say-you get what you pay for.
Review Source:I was really excited to try this place out, but I was sadly disappointed. Â It is a really pretty restaurant and located nicely in the downtown area of Valpo, but the food just really was not anything special. Â My special house potatoes were cold and had way too much of whatever seasoning they put on; the eggs that they served me were interesting, because there was one egg laid over two eggs (one had broken and instead of putting two new eggs they just did this). Â I was fine with that, but what I did not enjoy was the overwhelming butter taste that the eggs had. The bacon, however, was delicious. Â Great service and decor, but maybe I just had a bad experience with the food.
Review Source:This has become our favorite place for breakfast. Â The whole experience is extremely pleasant: thoughtful decor and atmosphere, pleasant and attentive staff, good menu with interesting specials, and the best coffee we have found in town. Â We have only been here early Sunday mornings, so we haven't seen it under busy conditions, but it seems nice for conversation and food. Â There are some reasonably healthy items on the menu as well as more indulgent things. Â We have not had a bad item in four tries. Â I agree with the earlier comment about the quality of the jams, and the apple butter is excellent as well. Â We are looking forward to trying the lunch menu soon.
Review Source:Overall a solid addition to downtown Valpo.
I have taken both my mother and mother-in-law there, and they loved the selection and quality of food. Â I have had the burger, granola, and omelettes. Â Everything was well-prepared with high quality ingredients.
The service is quite good as the wait staff keeps the coffee and water filled without much interference into your conversation.
Even when my 8 month old ate her food and was still hungry, they brought out some apple butter that she gobbled down with a smile. Â HIghly recommend for breakfast or lunch.
We were here for breakfast. My incredibly picky fiance enjoyed his skillet so much (the one with the pulled pork and fries) that he actually got it both days that he went (the day before I got there and the day I went). Â Despite the way I'm making that dish sound, the place is actually quite elegant-cozy.
Our waitress was super fantastic -- just the right amount of attentiveness, very friendly. Â The coffee was super. The homemade jams are just amazing -- make sure you ask for some if you didn't get any.
I had their version of a hangover breakfast (whatever they called it, it was similar to that). It was just the right amount of food, the potatoes were very well done. I've been to places like the Silver Spoon that kind of felt like they were trying to hard, but Silver Spoon really hit it on the nose.
Admittedly, I've only been for breakfast, but I really loved it (obviously. as you can tell).
