Disregard any "negative" reviews... Michelle the bartender is fantastic. Yes, she swears, busts balls, answers stupid questions with snarky comebacks, and deals out high fives. It's what makes it a fun place. Unbunch your knickers, don't take it personally, and you'll have a great time.
The bar itself is properly dim with dark wood. There's about eight or so beers on tap, with several local offerings, and of course, Guinness. Wouldn't be an Irish pub without a proper pint of Guinness. Full bar as well if you want liquor.
Great bartender, great bar.
I stopped in Portland with my girlfriend to meet up with a few of her friends. The snug was right down the street. MY KIND OF BAR!! Michelle, the bartender, had a no bullshit attitude and was on point all night! When asked if my dog could come in it was no problem, with maybe a curse word or two thrown in. We stayed all night and had a blast. Perfect little hang out bar. I just wish I didn't live so far away. I would be there weekly.
Review Source:One of the best around. The Snug's secret weapon is Michelle, probably the best bartender east of the Mississippi. She's hilarious, efficient & has a heart of gold. They always have great music on and their draft rotation is perfect (though i miss Hop Devil). This is a great spot for a date, friends or a solo pint.
Review Source:This is a great local bar with plenty of character. Â The white lights outside draw me into this cozy Irish pub on a cold winter evening. Â Don't be surprised if you see a dog wandering around or sleeping on one of the stools - the bar mascot obviously. Â There are good nightly beer specials and plenty of great microbrews on draft. Â Warning: If you are easily offended by profanity or taboo topics, you may feel uncomfortable at times. Â My advice, don't take it too seriously and appreciate being in an establishment where no filter is necessary. Â The bartender, Michelle, makes this place what it is!
Review Source:New to Portland and the East End so I had to find my local pub. Â Here it is. This is what a pub should be. Friendly. Not overly loud. Perfectly set up for conversation. Not too dark, not too bright. Perfect, Honestly. I've been looking for a pub like this for a long time.
Oh, and the beer. Â Solid selection of craft beers on draft.
A pretty standard-fare Irish pub in a town that has deep Irish routes. It's also in the Irish part of town, so there's that. If you're looking for a pub on Munjoy Hill, you can't do much better.
They've got a good selection of beers, and the prices are reasonable. The real reason to come here, though, is for Michelle the bartender. She's all attitude and tattoos, maybe a little out of place in an Irish pub, but man is she good at her job. I have seen this girl handle the bar by herself when it was packed, and she made it look easy. I swear she's double jointed by the number of pints she can pour simultaneously and hand out.
I bounced between a 4 and a 5 on this one. I've been hesitant to give 5's lately because, honestly, how many things can be "WOOHOO THE BEST THERE IS."...
That being said, I love the Snug and have loved em since they moved in. Michelle is HIL-ARIOUS, but don't expect her to be floofy doofy treat you like a god when you go in there. She runs a tight ship, while having fun and serving up the drinks. I love the snugs, it allows you to sit with a group of friends and not have to yell across the room at each other. Of course, I manage to run into about 7 people I know my first time back after a couple years - but that's what's great about Portland. Â And I'm glad people are venturing out of the Old Port.
I will keep going back, weekend after weekend. Oh, and they have Magners. REFRESHING!
This is an around the corner kind of bar with attentive bar tenders and a relaxed atmosphere. There are about 7-8 draft beers. There are tall partitioned booths that cut down on noise when gathering with friends.
The scene is fun, young and lively. Music plays from an iPod behind the bar. If you're looking for a place to sitdown a socialize with a group, The Snug is the spot. Drafts were $ 3.75 a piece.
The Snug is a local Irish bar that has adorable wooden booths where small groups of people can sit, drink and talk. The booths have high backs which makes them more private. There are also small low tables and chairs near the front of the bar and a counter alongside the big window facing the street.
The bartender was a spit-fire and the patrons were a fun mix of locals- dykes, younger folks, hipsters and laid-back people just coming in for a beer.
It's a great place for smaller groups of people but not good for large groups.
