I'm giving this place 4 stars for the pure comedic point of view of my order.

Quality of Food: B- The waffles were great but the chicken was kinda dry

Delivery:  D+ The guy arrived an hour late

Comedy:  A+++ ( The owner or at least I think he's the owner is so funny). When I placed my order he picked up the phone and took my order. It seems like he wears many hats as a small business owner. The place sounded very busy and he seemed to be doing or managing it all. He takes orders at the location, answers calls, cooks foods, handles all the customer service, etc. When I called back livid that my order was late instead of putting me on hold/mute  I think he covered the phone with his hand (which is so 1980's) that does nothing to muffle the sound.

He calls the driver and is like "Hello, Jackass, where the hell are you, what, where, what, get your ass over there, your 45 minutes late, what is your problem"?

Then he gets on the phone with me and says"Hello Ms, sorry for the delay he should be arriving in the next 15 minutes, have a wonderful day".  So professional.

LOL - I will order again - keep up the good work. You make it clear that small business owners make America/Chicago true and blue.

The food was pretty disappointing!!! The only so called soul food place near by is not good! After reading the reviews they must of have free food to right reviews! Had the smothered pork chops and they used the thinnest cut possible and the pork chop was fried not baked! These white people do not know what soul food is because this is a bad example of soul food! The mash potatoes were ok plain the Mac and cheese was over seasoned and had to much fat! My girls ribs were pretty decent but no BBQ sauce! The red beans and rice are not red beans and rice I don't no what it was but $20 I could of got mc Donald's! If you wanna have soul food there's chicken and Waffle House on the south side off king drive and 36th or the west side off Madison. Or there's a 5 star place on 83 and Ashland

I ordered the Smothered Pork Chop w/ rice and found it to be good. The gravy was tasty the chop tender with the right amount of seasoning. I was hoping for a slice of homemade cornbread but was disappointed that wheat bread was used. A slice of corn bread would have made this complete for me.

I was super hungry and ordered a second plate of meatloaf and fries.  After stuffing my face with the delicious chop I was disappointed in the bland, unsatisfying meatloaf.  Someone forgot to put some love into that meatloaf...it was angry awful.

All in all you get good a bit of food for your money. Each meal was ordered from the lunch (specials) menu for $5 each and it included a drink.

Will I try Soul Food Hut again? Yes.
Will I order the meatloaf? No freaking way.

    The food is good.

This is my first time ordering from them... Originally I was thinking of getting some chicken, but went with the beef short ribs instead. The meat is amazingly tender. Most of it had fallen off the bone before I even got to it. Easy to pick off the fat. The mac & cheese is good--I was sort of expecting something a little creamier, but it's still good. Got a nice breading on it. My mashed potatoes were substituted for the potato salad. Slightly disappointed, but you know, their potato salad is pretty good. So I'm not completely bummed. The corn bread it great! Just add a little butter to it... I could eat a whole pan of this.

My soda, however, didn't arrive with my meal.. which is something I read in other reviews... So I chatted up GrubHub to see if I could get a refund. They said they'd be by with my soda. It's not a huge thing, but I did pay $1.50 and it's not that often I find a caffeine-free soda that's not sprite. (I wanted my black cherry cola!)

Since the good is good, I'll probably order from them again... and just keep my fingers crossed everything arrives. (Or just not order a drink--though that was the deciding factor, albeit silly, for why I chose them. Seriously, being caffeine-free sucks sometimes.)

(Also: only took them 30 minutes to go and get my soda. Delivery guy was super nice and apologized for forgetting it.)

This-Place-Rocks!  When I ordered fried chicken, they told me in advance that it would be a 22 minute wait because they cook it to order.  This was perfect, as the owners, employees, and 'regulars' provided a welcoming, comfortable, and friendly atmosphere for my group.  It was fun.  When I got my chicken, collared greens, and sweet corn, it was so good I would have gladly waited 22 hours for it. I returned another time for smothered pork chops.  Again, everything, EVERYTHING, was just perfect.  This place is another bastion of pride in this great neighborhood.

Walked past this place, and was a little hesitant to go in because of the location... kind of in the middle of no where with little other stores nearby.  But, we were really glad we went in.  The owner of the place took our order, said it'd be about 20 minutes, brought us water, and brought us our meals.  We had the fried catfish and smoothered chicken.  We really enjoyed the meal and thought the sides were yummy too.  We have two toddlers who made a big mess, but everyone there was really friendly and didn't seem to mind.

Lunch is $5 and dinner is $10 including two sides and cornbread.  We would have preferred for the cornbread to have real bits of corn in there, but that's just us.  We'll go back.  We like to support local businesses like this that do a good job and want their customers to be happy.

Ordered delivery from Evanston for a long night's work. The delivery guy was very friendly and even came all the way into my building to find my office! Too bad they forgot our pineapple passionfruit sodas, whomp.

I ordered the meat loaf with mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. The meatloaf was pretty standard, not bad, but not great. The same can be said for the mashed potatoes, which I was totally expecting with delicious gravy. Luckily, the meatloaf had some already, so it wasn't a complete loss. The mac & cheese was pretty great; it's baked with a great crumbly texture, and a bit of spice! Yum.

Given the price and massive quantity, it wasn't a bad deal. I may order again if I'm feeling rather gluttonous.

I'm sad, because I wanted to like this place. I ordered online through GrubHub. Let me first say that I live less than a mile away from this place. When the estimated delivery time given was an hour, I figured that it might be less than that, but wasn't terribly mad when it was a little more than an hour. What I WAS mad about was that the food wasn't piping hot. If you're traveling 5 blocks to deliver something, it should probably taste hot and fresh when it gets there.

I ordered the chicken meal, with mac and cheese and collard greens as a side. The chicken was flavorless and soggy, the greens over-seasoned, and the mac and cheese mediocre. I also ordered the "homemade lemonade", which tasted like Country Time, and some banana pudding, which was the highlight of the meal. I would not order again from them. I couldn't finish my meal and afterward I felt sick. Oh, there was cornbread too, but it was forgettable. WAY too sweet and cakey, which Yankee cornbread tends to be.

I'm so irritated. The food is good. The customer service sucks! I have ordered from this restaurant several times and they are really starting to irritate me. I don't mind spending 3 bucks on delivery but on three seperate occassions there has been an issue with my delivery or order. One time they said within an hour and it took 1 1/2 hrs for the food to come. Then last night I ordered and they didn't give me gravy for my mashed potatoes. I have told several people about their establishment, but I'm now done. They will no longer be getting my service. Everytime there's an issue. And don't get me started about how they are always out of something... It's 6 pm, you close at 9. There is no reason you should be out of stuff! Especially on a Sunday. So yea... Good food, horrible customer service. No longer worth my time.

I have eaten here twice, and both times the food was pretty good.  I smothered chicken with mac & cheese and candy yams.  Yummo!!! I have also had the rib tips and they where fall off the bone tender.  Will definitely be back.  Think it is a great northside option instead of drive to the westside.  Give them a chance and don't go in the last hour because they tend to run out of things.

Very Disappointed! Went out of my way today on my lunch because i wanted to try thr rib lunch special for $5.00 bucks & unfornuately they had a minimum charge of $10 to use a debit card/card card & unfortunately didn't have any cash on me so i was pretty upset since i drove a bit of ways. Just thought i would let others know in case you try to go here for a lunch special be prepared....they should change this rule, unfortunately for them they lost a customer today, i just went & got some colemans.

I'm appalled that this place only has one star.  Even more appalled that all 16 of what seems to be legitimate reviews have been blocked.  Let me just say that I question your tactics Yelp.  Anyways, on to the review.

I order that 1/4 white fried chicken with a side order of collard greens and mac & cheese.  For $10 I got a FANTASTIC soul food dinner.  The chicken, fried to perfection and properly seasoned.  The mac & cheese, BAKED (as all good mac & cheese should be), goodness.  But the star of the show were the collards.  Cooked with smoked turkey necks people!  Doesn't get more soulful than that my friends!  Honorable mention to the cornbread.  REAL cornbread, not that sweet cake like Jiffy crap, but cornbread made with corn meal.  FYI, cornbread should NOT taste like cake!

I'm so happy this place opened in my hood.  In a sea of Mexican, Chinese and Sushi joints littered through Rogers Park, a place that serves delicious, unhealthy SOUL food is a refreshing and much needed addition.  Not to mention that I wont have to travel all the way to the South and West sides for my soul food fix.  Guys, take the time to read the filtered reviews and don't let that one star rating deter you from trying the Soul Food Hut out!
