I was lead astray by other yelpers claiming this was the best place to find a Reuben in Denver. Don't get me wrong, it was a darn good Reuben... but nothing special enough to be called the best in Denver. And certainly nothing close to the best I've ever had, but then I've been on the East Coast and that seems to make a difference.

Spice was, however, a good lunch spot. As soon as you walk in, the first thing you notice is how clean it is. It was pristine inside when I got there. We were met quickly by a nice gentleman who helped us find seats and took our order. Service was good, he checked on us several times and helped box up my leftovers. The classical music coming from the PA was a nice change from what you normally hear in the restaurant scene (aka what the servers want to listen to). And again... spotlessly clean. Gordon Ramsey would be very proud.

And the food was good. It was a solid sandwich, a little light on the kraut and cheese for my tastes, but still a good solid Reuben. The best? No. It's very comparable to Jason's Deli. The fries are run of the mill (needs salt) and everything was fresh, the costs cheap and the service great. The coleslaw I wouldn't recommend as it tasted off, but perhaps that's just my taste.

My biggest complaint was it was bloody cold. I made my friend leave before either of us had finished our cokes because I wanted the heat of a car again. I don't blame Spices for that, they likely can't control their heat. But I wouldn't stay in the future when it was nippy out.

All around, a good solid lunch that cheap and fast. A dependable place, clean with good service. But I do pray that it was not the best Reuben in Denver, otherwise I'll have to open my own place just to show Denver what it's missing.

One of my favorite little gems. Spices is perfect for a casual breakfast or lunch- the food, while nothing fancy, is very tasty and 'hits the spot'. Part of the charm is in the owner- he is very nice without being overbearing, and you can tell he's a good guy. The prices are very low and reasonable. Sometimes the service is a little slow, and that's because there is usually only one (sometimes two) servers. Other reviews have thrown shade at the space between tables. As a person who has a moderate amount of social anxiety (constantly thinking people are staring at me or listening to me), I experienced no anxiety about the close proximity of the other patrons. That being said, this isn't ideal for a first date, as it is quite cozy. The decor is simple and there is plenty of reading material for a casual lunch. Try this unpretentious little place if you are in the mood for something simple and reliable.

What an awesome little find! We stumbled on this place on a Friday morning around 11 and there were only a few other diners there. The dining room is charming and small but nicely decorated with lots of windows letting in beautiful natural light. The owner served us and he was friendly and helpful. The food was beautifully presented and tasty for sure! I got a vegetarian omelet which was full of onions and green pepper with a side of pancakes and hashbrowns. I would guess the owner is a Libra because everything was just meticulously beautiful in its presentation. Yum! Next time I'm in the area, visiting Spices Cafe again will be on my mind for sure.

Great home cooked feel, and no wait to get a table.

This was a great little spot! I had the breakfast burrito without meat (I don't need any extra) and it was huge! Tasty with just the right amount of spiciness. The green chile was amazing. Also, the Pico de Gallo was really beautifully cut. Perfect little squares and I really appreciate things like that.  The service was attentive and my coffee cup was always warm and full. I think this was a fabulous value and I got an extra $5 off with Scoutmob. They do have a tiny parking lot too but street parking was more than fine.

Very cool little(and I mean little) diner. There is not much in the way of seating, but it's worth the wait if there is one. You can look at all the vintage cookbooks on the walls until you get a spot. I had a breakfast burrito and they serve it smothered in some really yummy green chile. Also, this place is incredibly cheap - I think my husband and I got out of here with two breakfasts, juice and coffee for around $16. Friendly service too.

This quaint little hole in the wall is everything you can ask for out of a random breakfast adventure. The cuisine is unique and delightful, never bordering on the strange. Their hot cider was delicious as was the croissant sandwich with artichoke Parmesan spread and their special goat cheese, shrimp, and asparagus omelette. And SO reasonably priced for such quality!

Oh, and the lady wants you all to know that the fresh flowers on each table are a wonderful aesthetic touch to the atmosphere.

Spices is difficult to review. We ate there this weekend. But would I go back given the positives I will say about it. It is unlikely.

First the food was fresh, excellently prepared and fairly priced. If just food it would be a 5. The service was friendly and coffee excellent.

But the seating for me was uncomfortable. You sit at tables of two separated by 6 inches or foot from adjoining table. It is impossible to carry on private conversation. Also because of normal eye vision you do look at your companion and person opposite you at adjoining table. They do have more private seating outside but not sure how well heated it would be. To me at 66, it was like trip back to a college bar.

If the atmosphere is appealing to you the quality and quantity of food and the pricing is wonderful.  For me it was uncomfortable setting.  If warm day might have tried porch but it is often very crowded although tables more separated.

The positive press that Spices Cafe has gotten is right on the money.  We got there in the middle of the afternoon about an hour before they closed, and although we had missed the breakfast and lunch rushes, it was easy to see with the quick professionalism in which they handled our order and got our food out to us that this place does a lot of good business.

The cafe seems to have everything you could want or need to eat or drink for breakfast or lunch, and the quaint dining room with a great outdoor view and a covered patio with an impressive amount of seating makes it easy to see why people enjoy eating here so much.  The food was very good and the prices were extremely reasonable.  Good stuff!

I'm not exactly sure why everyone seems so in love with this place.  Perhaps it's the astoundingly low prices???  I can agree it's a bargain for the price you pay, but the quality really lacks overall.  The OJ doesn't hold a candle to Tropicana (and in case you're wondering, I happen to think Tropicana is a terrible excuse for orange juice), and their "hashbrowns" are just grated potatoes cooked not quite long enough to be crispy with no salt or flavor whatsoever.

The breakfast sandwich was good (although $2 to add a slice of avocado seems a bit ridiculous), the server was a perfectly decent human being, and the decor was... uh... "quaint."  But overall I just wasn't impressed, and given the other outstanding breakfast/brunch options in Denver, I'd be quick to give this place a pass in the future.

Shhhhh!  I almost don't want to write a review about this place because it seems like a hidden gem.  Tucked away between Colfax and 16th on Humboldt you'd have to want to find this place.  It's not the kind of place you stumble into, or at least I wouldn't.  That being said, I stopped in for breakfast one Sunday morning and was presently surprised with the food, the ambiance and the service.

The food was phenomenal, I had french toast with fresh berries.  Everything was fresh and tasted great.  The ambiance was nice and reminded me of a beach side cafe ... minus the beach.  I did also enjoy the patio and dog friendly environment.  They were playing classical music, which was nice.  Nothing is worse than getting top 40 pushed into your ears first thing in the morning.  I appreciated the taste in music, very much!

The service was prompt and friendly, even though they were pretty busy.  I like this little spot, it's inexpensive and the food it on point!

I can't believe it took me so long to find this place! This little gem is hidden behind the Streets of London pub, and I had no idea it existed for the first 8 months I lived off Colfax & Humboldt.

I just absolutely love this place... There was one week I went for breakfast every day -- BEST breakfast in Denver, in my opinion. Try the French toast with berries, there's always some left over to take home. I've also had the breakfast burrito with green chili, which is also excellent.

The chef is always willing to accommodate food allergies and vegetarian/vegan requests. You know what makes this place extra special? There are always fresh flowers at the tables (at least every time I've been there).

Seriously, you need to try Spices!

This cozy quiet little corner find is one of my city favorites! I've always said that "love" is a real ingredient and believe it when I tell you that Chef Michael puts it all in!

The food here is always made fresh and served hot from a well kept clean kitchen and even with many tasty healthy choices available Chef Micheal has always been happy to create a vegetarian option as most menu items are made to order!

My family is full of vegetarians and many a visit has been quietly spent together over a breakfast croissant and cup of tea. The two egg meal is also available with fruit or potatoes and a side of bread instead of the meat option (topped with avocado OMG!) and it's lite healthy choice for anybody but it's still filling. The breakfast is always AWESOME here and every time we've ever been it was available ALL day.

Did I mention the tea? Talk about aroma therapy! It's been properly stored in glass containers behind the counter the last few times we've been (available as a bulk item) and the blends come in a made to order tea bag! (may I suggest as a duo, if they have the Lemon Bars available!

As far as the lunch and dinner items I highly recommend The Fish and Chips... AMAZING...I'm also a big fan of their Classic Reuben or The Club Sandwich!

The best part is that this place inexpensive, it's quiet and it's loved. You can taste the difference!

It's a hard sell if you're on a time budget, but Spices Cafe is great value if you're looking for well-made food on the cheap.

The excellent: Food prices are very reasonable and portions are great
The bad: It's located very close to Colfax so you get the standard bums, sketchy characters walking up to you
The ugly: Expect a 45 minute wait while the restaurant is operating at less than half capacity (they are incredibly slow)

Spices Cafe excels in some areas, but falls short in the delivery. If their service was about a third of the time it is currently, I would consider coming back.

New favorite!  Nice covered patio as well as seating area inside.  DELICIOUS coffee.  Friendly staff and inexpensive place.

I ordered the croissant breakfast sandwich but added bacon, avocado, and goat cheese (per recommendation).  Best decision ever--I highly recommend it. I will probably have dreams about that sandwich until we meet again.

No wait and awesome food!  So good!

I've only hit them up for  with a friend, so I cannot speak to their lunch stuff (didn't seem super veg friendly), but their morning meals were delish. I got a short stack of pancakes, which were fluffy and delicious, and a side of hashbrowns, which were well cooked and actually had some seasoning and herbs in them, making them much tastier than any hashbrowns I've had before. They are good; neither bad nor out of this world, but I think it's a nice place for a quick bite, and I appreciate their tea selection (and it being loose tea, rather than pre-bagged). Also, to note; they have gender neutral bathrooms, which gains them a whole extra star.

Side note: Deep fried snickers bar? WTF? Have not tried it, but would like to shake the hand of someone who has.

What a pleasure to find Spices Cafe!  We went for brunch on Sunday -- and sampled all parts of the menu.  The food was fantastic -- from the kid's meal order to the adults.  We even had some special dietary needs, and Spices was able to meet them all.  Seven very happy people enjoyed this special find.

There is limited seating inside and out, but yet for a Sunday morning, nearly all seats were full, and people came and went the entire time with no one having to wait.  This is not a fancy place, the ambience comes from the great times with others and the great food.  The serving staff were quiet, but very attentive.

This little place is kind of hidden, unfortunately. Discovered it this morning searching for "Denver's best breakfast burrito" and "open on Sunday," which ruled out most of the Mexican-owned places.

I was really surprised to show up to a bright, inviting space with baroque music, where the really pleasant chef took my order. The food was great and we'll be going back!

Great little cafe! We had a late breakfast here on a Sunday. The waitress was really nice and the cook personally took out order and brought us our food. Sourdough French toast was unusual and delicious, as were the veggie omelets. Everything was fresh and very reasonably priced as well.  I'd definitely come here again!

Spices doesn't need my paltry review and I still can't help myself. You must venture here. I ordered the sourdough French toast and I'm pretty sure angels flew out of it at some point. Impeccable and unique flavor. My husband ordered the Denver omelette. Now, I'm not much of an omelette person but the addition of the pork green chili made me practically steal his plate! I've been trying to re-create it at home ever since. Absolutely amazing.

The owner is reserved but definitely cares about his food and it shows both in preparation as well as how attentive he is to customers. Love this hidden gem!

Delightfully relaxing Saturday afternoon lunch with tasty duck vegetable soup and shared a meatloaf sandwich (good roll) and a roasted turkey, cheese, avocado on toasted earthy bread.  We were looking for a new place to try and the Yelp help led us here.  A great find to be visited again.

Spices Cafe is nothing special. The food is okay, the service is okay, and the ambience is okay.

Largely, the quality of the food is dependent upon what you order. I try to keep it simple. Get a burger or order some breakfast. Stay away from anything that requires more than general knowledge of grilling. And don't be brave with meat; I've eaten some chicken that just didn't taste right a couple of times.

There isn't much service to be had. It's a walk up and order kind of place. The guy behind the register is quiet and says nothing beyond your order's total. At times, he acts rather rude, seeming annoyed when you ask questions. Again, keep it simple. Ask few questions. Walk up, order a burger or breakfast, pay, and sit. Trying to figure out if their chicken is free range won't go well, I promise.

The ambience is non-existent. It's a hole in the wall. But that's what's endearing about it (if anything is). It's a local place with local folks. Good prices and some nice seating outside when the weather is nice. But be prepared to bus your own tables and pour your own water.

Spices' saving grace is its daily $3.95 special. A good deal, depending on what they've got on tap. I've had a couple of nice wraps, and friends have enjoyed some of the more robust entrees (pork chops, turkey, etc.).

I say try it once. Keep your expectations low. Order simple. Talk little. You might like it. Or you can walk a block and go to the Irish Snug for a beer instead.

Breakfast is best meal of the day. But when you're at Spice, it's about as good as it gets.

I really love "funky" little places, and Spice fit the bill perfectly. I didn't get to look inside because I was immediately drawn to the outside patio, excited to enjoy the dry August weather in Colorado. It was, dare I say, perfect, especially coming from our muggy Kansas summer.

After a brief look at the menu outside, I zeroed in on a sandwich I HAD to try. I'm a lover of anything with an egg on it, and breakfast sandwiches always steal my heart away. I was floored at how delicious this sandwich was, honestly -- and they were happy to work with me, putting it on wheat bread.

The food is incredibly good, and the cost is right. My man and I walked out paying only $15 (generous tip included), right after a great conversation with a friendly waitress about where we were from. I'm a sucker for good service, so that really was the icing on this cafe.

You will DEFINITELY see me at Spices the next time I'm in Denver.

This place is interesting because although the inside and the service (one guy-always the same nice/shy guy) are a little on the funky side, he always got the job done.  I have been several times and it was always the same. Decent portions, fresh enough, well prepared diner-style offerings at a reasonable price.  Totally edible without repercussions kind of place.  Perfect neighborhood indie spot.

However...I went again recently and couldn't believe how different it was.  Some mysterious person must have snuck in from another planet and told them they have to change things....in a huge way...perhaps they should try imitation food...NO one will notice!  Seriously, that's how drastically different it was.  Not cool Spices. You've got a great rating but if you keep serving this stuff, your customers will go out the door like I have and most likely not return.

I have had the veggie omelette here several times in the past year and it was always the same, nice sized portion, fluffy with plenty of fresh veggies folded inside.
What I received recently was not only about a third of the usual size, but a shriveled, sad, egg rolled "thing" with 3 barely recognizable mushroom halves on top and loaded with rubbery cheese...no other veggies to speak of.  Horrible at best.  No I didn't finish it, I didn't want to spend my afternoon in the bathroom.

If that wasn't bad enough, the once normal diner-style crispy hash browns were replaced by very finely shredded plastic-y tasting strips-wth??  We all know that plastic has...NO flavor and is a digestive nightmare.  It was a gross meal.  I shoulda sent it back but who sends food back at a diner with one shy guy working?!  Not me.
I ate some of it, paid for it ($10 with tip-drank water)  and now I get to Yelp about it.

My un-suspecting from out of town friend ordered the Italian sandwich and although she is easy to please and loves almost every kind of food, she couldn't finish this oddity-on-a-plate.  Her comments were "the bread tastes fake", the meat was really "weird" and overall it was "just not tasty at all".

Come on Spices...what happened to the flavor and the real ingredients?!  This is how you kill a restaurant.
Please stop cutting corners and serving sub-par food.  Get back to your old self-please, your fans near and far are counting on you.

We were visiting Denver the week of October 7th,2011.  My wife and I love to have a nice sit down breakfast and used Yelp to help us find a good breakfast spot while in town.  We stayed downtown and were looking for some place close.  The first place we went was packed, loud and had a very long wait so we left.

We found Spices Cafe on Yelp and called and asked how long the wait was.  We were told that there was no wait (Sat around 11am).  We drove to Spices and we were very glad we did.  It is a small little cafe with one waiter, who I think is either the owner or cook.

The food and the service was GREAT! I actually felt that they should have charged more.  We paid $17.00 for an order of french toast , a huge breakfast burrito and two coffees.  Maybe I am just used to being ripped off, because I am from Vegas, but I thought the prices were very reasonable.

We actually went back on Sunday and on Monday before we went to the airport for our return flight home.  We also ordered the same thing, all three days.

Get the French Toast and the breakfast burrito.  You wont be disappointed!

On my constant quest to try out new brunch places in the area, I bookmarked Spices a few months ago. Finally, my friend and I decided to brunch here yesterday and made our way to the cute restaurant nestled behind Streets of London. It took us a while to decide on breakfast options as Spices has an extensive menu. In the end we decided to split a breakfast burrito, veggie omelet and a side of pancakes (yes, we were hungry).

The breakfast burrito was bomb. I ordered it without meat, but the eggs, potatoes, lettuce and pico were perfect with the green chile and the chalula that I drizzled on top. The breakfast potatoes that came with the omelet were hash brown-ish yet not overfried or overcooked. The pancakes came out cold, but we still ate them because they were light and fluffy and they have pretty good maple syrup there.

The service was very friendly and the outdoor patio was perfect in the 70 degree weather. Yes, I will be back.

Looking for a breakfast place on vacation, and this is what we found. It was a great find.

They have a menu posted outside, and we were taking a look over everything when a server came out and offered us a table. We sat outside, under an awning, and another server came to us in short order with menus of our own. She was very pleasant, and eager for conversation.

The food was delicious. I had two eggs, sausage patties, and French Toast, and it was $5.25. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the French Toast had a very unique, wonderful taste, and the sausage was sausage. It's hard to go wrong with sausage, honestly.

All told, the meal was $15, and that includes the tip. You really get great food, and great service, at a wonderful price. If you are in Denver, hit up Spices.

This was NOT what I expected it to be. It's a room with chairs, and a little counter with a little kitchen tucked behind it. I came in based on Yelp reviews, looking for a sandwich that doesn't come from Snarf's. I had the Turkey Avocado grilled cheese extravaganza, and it was awesome. Onion Rings were also delish. The boyfriend had the fish and chips, and it was pretty stellar. I'll certainly go back, but probably for take-out. I didn't feel comfortable in that shanty room.

I'm not sure you can call this a cafe, or a restaurant. Perhaps I'll just call it an overlooked hole in the wall behind Streets that makes damn good food. Not that I didn't love it, but I was not properly prepared for what it was.

This is my new favorite breakfast place in all of Denver. My boyfriend and I had an amazing meal here the other morning, and I can't wait to go back. The owner/chef, Michael, seems to run most of the show. He is very kind and humble about his restaurant.

Although the atmosphere is cozy and clean, I will be back for the food. I had the Croissant sandwich for $3.95. The Croissant was fresh and the Artichoke Parmesan spread was subtle and tasty! My boyfriend had the 1515 which included French Toast, two eggs any style, and choice of meat...all for $5.50! I don't even like French Toast and I kept stealing bites of his....excellent! We also shared a side of their Green Chili sauce...YUM!

The coffee is tasty and refilled often. I can't really say anything bad about this place. I look forward to trying lunch or dinner sometime.

Many of the 'popular' breakfast places I've been in Denver have been the same story: queue up, get small portions and pay through the nose for vegan/veggie/yuppie uselessness that leaves you and your wallet feeling empty.

Spices is exactly none of these things. Apparently not ordinarily excessively busy, you sit down where you'd like and pay what I conceive to be less money than it'd cost me to cook my own eggs in the morning.  The food is pretty basic/elemental, but expertly experimental in its own right.  He's obviously always trying different things, and the cafe is the exhibition of what's worked out - brilliantly.

They do business on the razor thin line of food cost vs vanity, and an pummel the laughable efforts of anything else local.

What a cool little spot!  I had friends who referred to it as "No Name Restaurant Behind Streets" until we realized it was called "Spices Cafe."

The boyfriend and I stopped in for a little breakfast, not feeling the whole "lets drink and eat brunch" thing but more like "lets grab some quick breakfast."  I'm glad we came here.  It's a short walk from home and not too busy.  The menu is nothing out of the ordinary....your typical breakfast fare as well as sandwiches, soup, and salads for lunchtime.  I got the croissant breakfast sandwich...this thing is HUGE for $4.  It's like eating a cheese omelette between bread.  I also ordered coffee and was given a whole pot.  I can put down a lot of coffee if you let me, and was glad to be given the opportunity.

I also ate some of the boyfriend's toast.  I liked it...it was really crispy and they use good bread.  I probably didn't need toast in addition to my omelette sandwich, but you know.  It's the weekend.  And I wanted something I could put jam on.

All in all, I recommend Spices for an easy stress-free breakfast.

New to Denver, my girlfriend and I originally wanted to try brunch at Snooze; that plan was thrown out the window as soon as we saw the line.

Not one to be deterred, I pulled out my blackberry and quickly yelped something close by. Spices came up and we headed on over for unknown deliciousness.

I will admit, when we pulled up to the place we were a little trepidatious. It's not much to look at from the outside... or from the inside for that matter. Not that its horrible, its just not fancy. Definitely had a diner feel to it.

At any rate, we both ordered the breakfast sandwich on a croissant,  thinking "this will be safe and easy for them to make." Well friends, let me tell you - this was no ordinary breakfast sandwich. They used wicked fresh ingredients (homegrown tomatoes? Yes please!) and the artichoke spread on the croissant? TO DIE FOR. I want it now just thinking about it.

If you live near Spices go now and often. The food is awesome, the service was friendlier than all get out, and then wait is non-existent. LOVE.

This little restaurant behind Streets of London is very unassuming and makes good food just as you'd expect. I had a Philly Cheesesteak that most likely isn't considered "authentic" - no Cheese Whiz here, but it was just the right size for eating the whole thing and not feeling extremely fatty afterward.

The man working there when Gabi and I stopped in for a quick lunch was as nice as could be. He whipped up our food for us quickly and even cleared our plates when we were done, even though this is more like a deli and less like a restaurant judging by the feel of the atmosphere. I definitely recommend paying a visit here for a quick breakfast or lunch.

I was kind of bummed when I moved from my old Gov's Park neighborhood to Colfax and Humboldt. While Gov's Park suffered from seriously lame bars, it had great restaurants, nearby grocery stores, and coffeeshops at convenient one-block intervals. Colfax is great for barcrawling, but I had a hell of a time finding a decent, cheap dinner nearby that wasn't greasy bar food or slightly frightening street food (I will get up the ovaries to try Bourbon Chicken one of these days, though I'm still unconvinced it's not a money-laundering operation for a drug cartel).

Spices fits a great little niche if you want a salad or sandwich and aren't drunk or looking to get drunk. I had the farmer's salad, which is served on a platter the size of a bus steering wheel and can be topped with- glory of glories- steak.

    I'll definitely be back.

This is a great little no fuss breakfast/lunch spot.

My favorites are the french toast which is a lot of food for the price and oh so tasty. I also love the turkey avocado sandwich, but I have also had the veggie burger and it is way better than most.
They have a lot of options and specials everyday. Plus for you veggies they have veggie items but will also rework menu items for you. Good times!

The friendly gal (Salina)  who works behind the counter is also quite a talented baker. She is responsible for all the tasty treats such as cakes, creme brulee, cookies, and cupcakes. Be sure to get some dessert...your mouth will thank me! =]

Rejoice, Colfaxers! Your late(ish) night sandwich options no longer stop at just Fat Jacks or Silver Mine! Try Spices Cafe, a little gem tucked in behind Streets of London and Scooter's Liquors. Now open until at least 11 pm, Spices provides a much needed alternative to those other two. No boring sub-style sammies here, Spices offers up the goods. All the items on their menu-- including breakfast options-- are served right up until closing (or until they run out).

Some of the prices might seem a little high at first glance ($7.95 for a grilled veggie sandwich)... but read a little further and you'll notice that they come with your choice of side! And we're not talking a bag of chips, either. You can choose fries (a huge portion of shoestrings that are seasoned just-right and cooked just-perfect), onion rings (batter-dipped, not breaded, and SO good), or slaw (didn't try it... I generally hate slaw). So it's actually quite a deal.

An even better deal? A burger with the same side-order options for $5.50. My husband said it was one of the better burgers he'd ever had. And he's had many...

I ordered the aforementioned Grilled Veggie Sandwich. It was good, albeit served "club style," with an extra slice of bread in the middle. Kind of my pet peeve (see my review of Sputnik), but I let it slide. The delicious fries more than made up for that renegade slice of 7-grain.

Extra bonus: you can order select items from Streets of London's menu at Spices too! Sure, you'll miss out on Streets' killer jukebox and boisterous ambiance... but sometimes you'd just rather sit quietly and enjoy your curry fries amidst spice racks and prints of little babies sitting in spaghetti pots. And that's okay too.
