I was in town on business and decided to try and find a suitable prosciutto and mozzarella sandwich since my favorite from back home just disappeared (menu change, a real shame). After seeing one that looked great in the Yelp photos I decided to give Spinelli's a try. My experience was as follows:
Walked back to deli around noon on a Saturday and was met with a small crowd of hungry people. I waited about 5-8 minutes before placing my order. Ordered a prosciutto, mozzarella, tomato and pesto sandwich on white sub-style bread. Waited another 5 or so minutes to get the sandwich. Paid at the front register and sat at one of the two 4-tops in the front of the store. Now, the food:
Upon unwrapping my sandwich I discovered that the prosciutto was medium-thick sliced, something I'm weird about and don't prefer (I like all sandwich meats thinly sliced). Â However, I didn't specify this ahead of time and so can't really complain too much. The amount of meat and cheese were generous and I was excited to taste it. Fast forward 7 minutes or so... Â I'm finished, satisfied and will certainly be back again. It wasn't as good as my hometown favorite (Panozzos in Chicago), but it was very good and I will come back for more.
Additionally, everything else in the store looked very good and fresh. If I were making an Italian dinner or needed some specialty Italian ingredients I would come to Spinelli's to check for it.
My thoughts on Spinelli's:
- Very unique Italian market. Â I loved the fresh produce and authentic Italian ingredients!
- I had very high expectations after reading the reviews, but was not super-thrilled about my sandwich.
- I ordered the Italian, but they were out of Italian rolls so I chose a baguette instead. Â It was extremely difficult to eat because the bread was really tough and my sandwich kept falling apart!
- I also ordered some house pastrami to take home and make sandwiches with - it is awesome and was not very expensive.
- The potato salad was also very good. Â It's too bad they don't give you more! Â It was creamy, with a nice mustardy kick and a few chopped veggies.
I guess I was expecting the best sandwich in Denver, and was a bit dissappointed. Â I would try it again but Snarf's is still my fave! Â The desserts and pre-made meals look really tasty and might be worth trying on a busy weeknight when I don't feel like cooking.
First time at Spinelli's - came at the noon hour to order a sandwich. Â Lots of people at the sandwich counter in the back, and the it was highly disorganized, who was first?? - who was second. Â I would like to suggest a "Take A Number" method. Â Very close quarters too, for people to wait. Â The fact that many people were there for a sandwich says quite a bit, maybe....
Ordered a chicken salad sandwich. Â No chicken salad in the front, the very nice young man went to 'the back' and found some, and lo, my chicken salad sandwich arrived.
As for the sandwich....nice white bread (my choice) huge chunks of apple, big grapes uncut, and hunks of chicken. Â BIG hunks of fruit and chicken that spilled out the sandwich. Â The salad could have used more mayo, and the chicken could have used more salt and pepper. Â In other words, the entire thing was thrown together, more suitable for a salad on a plate with lettuce, not carefully cut up as one needs to do for a sandwich. Â Gee whiz! - everyone says this place is great, but I sure thought my sandwich needed a tune up.
However, I also purchased some oatmeal raisin cookies right by the cash register, and they were about the best I have ever eaten, and that is saying quite a bit.
1) They need a system for customers during the busy lunch hour
2) Praise the helpers in the market, they are great!
3) Work on that chicken salad, it needs help
4) Keep the cookie maker
Yo Spinelli's.... Â Way to go on the Monday/Wednesday to-go dinner menu! Â Every week there's something I want to eat from it. Â
Do you know how awesome it is to know as a new parent who's tired and busy that I can get a delicious prepared meal two days a week for like 7 bucks a serving? Â It's brilliant.
And the Sante Fe sandwich is Top Dollar. Â I'll kill that on any saturday you want me to. Â I could eat that thing until the cows come home. Â Green chilies, turkey and awesomeness!!!! Â Ha ha. Victory.
Plus, awesome NY Strip Steaks for grilling just around the corner from my house? Â What more can a guy ask for? Â I'm in local grocer heaven.
Thank you Spinelli's
I absolutely LOVE Spinelli's! Â I just wrote another review and it occurred to me that I've never submitted a well-deserved review about Spinelli's, despite the 100 or so times I've been there. Â
This is an amazingly friendly, well stocked, little Italian market. Â The sandwiches are great, especially the meatball, but their homemade fresh mozzarella is what keeps me coming back every week. Â They make order-ahead meals several nights a week, which I keep meaning to try because they sound fantastic. Â The homemake, ready to bake italian dishes are great. Â There's nothing bad to say really, except that I always roam the isles and buy more than I need because it all looks so good!
Nice guys behind the samwich counter, they seemed happy to make my sub: turkey, roasted peppers, provolone, basil, pesto sauce, was delish. It looked small but it was filling. Had to have my pickle of course and the mac salad was very yummy. Again, looked small but was the perfect size. Nice lady (owner) at the register, I told her I liked the pictures of her family behind the counter so we chatted for a bit. I'll return to this lil market to get some Italiano staples and of course to support small business. I took my lunch over to City Park and then...
Review Source:Complete market awesomeness! Â The first time I went to this market the man behind the counter gave me excellent advice on how to properly grill the sausages I was buying so that they are cooked to perfection. Recently I walked up to the deli counter and said I needed something delicious for a girl's night out...within minutes I had a customized, beautiful tray filled with olives, cheese, and various types of salami. I am also a big fan of their yummy sandwiches and ready to bake homemade pasta dishes (stuffed shells is my personal favorite). Â BEST NEIGHBORHOOD MARKET EVER!!
Review Source:Hoooray! Â I have finally found a legit Italian sub in Denver. Â I didn't think this day would ever come! Â I thought it was a lost hope. Â I get regular Italian sub cravings and have been so let down by the choices in the Denver area. Â I pretty much gave up after trying subs at the places that were supposed to be the best. Â I told my man that Spinelli's was my last attempt and then I was giving up on Italian subs out west. Â Luckily, Spinelli's is awesome and I don't have to give up.
Spinelli's has some pretty darn good Italian subs. Â I am pretty particular about my Italian subs after growing up eating Italian subs in NYC with my Italian family. Â We are Italian sub snobs. Â When I moved to Chicago, I was able to find amazing Italian markets there and that filled that void in my heart after the move. Â Then, we moved to Denver and the void was back and there was no filling it. Â That is, until I found Spinelli's. Â Spinelli's was able to satisfy my cravings and make me a happy girl. Â The best Italian sub in Denver!
I will definitely be returning soon.
Only know the food from the sauces available at stores. The creamy tomato vodka sauce is Delish BUT its spiciness is uneven: sometimes it's mild, sometimes a titch (my 9-year-old's word) more spicy than mild, and sometimes it damn HOT!
(I'd have given such feed back on the Spinelli's web site IF their "Contact Us" link was actually a ...link. (Hello? Webmaster/mistress?)
<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.spinellismarket.com%2Findex.cfm%3Ffuseaction%3Dpage.display%26page_id%3D23&s=12eaede97ab587c0a74dc9cb6807a996741664eca8dff4e508bdc9b203129e0d" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.spinellismark…</a>
My only request (& it's just me) is to make it less chunky; we have to blend it & add cream if we want to eat it with the kids. (Okay, truth be told: I do prefer smooth over chunky tomato-based sauces myself.)
But;
Mr./Mrs./Miss/Master/Uncle/Aunt/Cousin Spinelli: if you don't  let people give you feedback (on the sauces, the web site, the art on the bottle--whatever) how can you know what the people are thinking?
Maybe you don't really care because hey, it's your food and your sales are fine.
Just giving my 2 cents.
Unexpectedly tasty sandwich in an old school local deli market. Special of the day sandwiches all sounded delicious and the one I got was just that. Samples of cheese and fig jam was just icing on the cake. Polite and efficient staff made the experience most enjoyable. Will be back when in the neighborhood.
Review Source:The salted caramel w/chocolate ganache gelato is DANGEROUS! The hubbs & I agree that we can only get it for special occasions, because we could each easily down a pint. Beyond that, the down-home friendliness of this neighborhood market is unbeatable. We love being able to whisk in to grab dinner and a few essentials on a weeknight. I love the fact that they publish a monthly rotating menu.
Review Source:Best little market ever!! Â Family owned with a neighborhood atmosphere -almost takes you back in time to those great markets of the past. Â The owners are friendly, and there pretty much every day. Â Excellent selection of produce, fine meats & cheeses, and Italian imports. Â They make their own mozzarella and pasta sauces and they also sell pre-made pizza dough. Â Fantastic sandwiches made to order (Colorado Classic is my fav), homemade frozen dinners, and a good selection of soup, salads, and desserts. Â Great place to buy ripe avocados, too.
My favorite thing about this place is you can by things like lentils, polenta, beans and fresh basil by the weight, so you dont end up buying a whole pack and wasting half of it.
Definitely stop by if you are in the neighborhood. Â You won't regret it!
Wow! Â I stumbled on this little gem while taking my dog for grooming next door at Oona's.
I could not believe what a fabulous selection they had for such a small store and the prices were less than Whole Foods! Â Mini heirloom, organic tomato packs for under $3.00? Â I mean OMG those same tomatoes would have been closer to $5.00 anyplace else.
The Owners are a lovely, friendly couple that couldn't have been more helpful!
I decided to get a sandwich and a drink and have lunch in the small seating area. Â It was probably one of the best, giant sandwiches i've had in a very long time! Â The gourmet sandwich, pickle and side salad of the day was only $6.25! Â Move on over Subway and Quiznos, no need to eat processed crap with Spinelli's around!
I felt like I jumped back in time with the neighborhood ambience and customer service. Â Im almost afraid to let the cat out of the bag about this little gem!
Spinelli's is truly a neighborhood market and I'm so glad to have it near my new home. There is a small selection of a wide variety of things from fresh fruit and ice cream to ready-made sandwiches and prepared meals so if you're in a pinch or just looking for lunch, chances are they'll have something for you.
All sandwiches come with a pickle and your choice of salad of the day (think macaroni or potato, not green stuff) or a piece of fruit and a pickle. The fruit and the pickles sit right on the counter where you order your sandwich so if you want that you can just pick it out yourself. An in-the-know tip for y'all - you can order your sandwiches ahead of time and then when you are ready just saunter on in to the back and tell them your name. Your sandwich will be ready and waiting and you'll be in and out in no time at all.
On a recent trip I also decided to pick up a pineapple and as I was checking out the lady helping me told me that they have a policy on fruits like pineapples - since there's no way to guarantee the inside hasn't gone bad if I got home and realized it had gone bad I could just come back and get a new one, no need to return the old, rotten one. I thought that was pretty dang cool and just reinforce my desire to want to support this cute little shop.
There is one table, just one, for sitting there and eating in. But, I recommend getting your sandwiches to go to be safe. If it's a nice day out you could always take it to the small park across the street or over to City Park and soak up some Vitamin D.
Unfortunately, I had to move away from Park Hill two years ago. I never took Spinelli's for granted and I miss them incredibly to this day. Foremost, their composed meals that you pre-order were second to none. Denver has great restaurants, and I would put these dishes that only require a reheat at home up against most. My wife and I had jobs requiring long hours and we would seriously look forward to seeing the upcoming menu and dropping off our monthly order.
The convenience of having a market within walking distance was priceless. Why spend money on gas when you could stroll to Spinelli's where the quality of their fish, meats, and produce was superior to a supermarket? Their prices are slightly higher, which we were more than happy to pay to keep them in our 'hood. And Mary Ellen greeted us by name from early on. When's the last time that happened to you when you popped into a store for fresh basil or a lime?
And the deli, my God, where the hell can I get a Jerry's Italian Sub in Los Angeles??? My wife and I miss this place so much!
Best Italian Sandwich (Jerry's Classic Italian Sub) in Denver.
There, I said it and now I could detail all of the reasons its oh so very very good and traditional..... but rather I'll let you find out on your own.
Great kind of place that every neighborhood needs, and I was once lucky enough to get free Blue Traveler at Red Rocks tickets from here.
Spinelli, why didn't you call me PRE-my-Tiramisu-making-phase? Â Had I known that you had everything I needed, for much cheaper too, then I wouldn't have traversed to three different stores just to find the right ingredients. Â Sigh* Â I guess this just grants me the prerogative to start again! :)
But honestly, Spinelli's Market actually does offer a comprehensive supply of Italian, and non-Italian, groceries and supplies. Â Not only is there a solid supply of cheeses and deli meats, Spinelli's also makes Italian dishes to take home and reheat at your leisure. Â The sandwiches I've had at Spinelli's are only okay because I've had better; they're robust but a little bland. Â But what I really adore are the pre-made desserts, in their refrigerated display. Â They offer all kinds of puddings, cakes, and tiramisu, which are absolutely divine... especially if you like sweet. Â They are also well-packaged to easily bring home and store for the next day or the next next day.
Parking isn't a problem, if you turn onto one of the neighborhood streets. Â The service is also friendly, and you can definitely feel the neighborly vibe by the patrons and owners. Â Truly an experience and grocery in one.
Went for the first time yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised. Â The market is small, but packed with lots of items, including a decent cheese and meat selection, with lots of drinks. Â They also make their own mozzarella in the back, and have a jumbo selection of Italian goods, and their own pasta sauce.
They also sell entrees that you can take home and heat up for dinner. Neat!
I ordered the #1 sandwich, the house Italian Sub, with roasted red peppers, marinated onions, and 3 kinds of delicious meat, with cheese, lettuce and tomato.
All the sandwiches come with a piece of fruit or a small salad (macaroni, potato or bean salad), and a pickle if you like. Â The potato salad was perfect, just the right amount of mustard and seasonings without being over powering.
Also, they sell NOVO coffee beans, which makes me ridiculously happy, because Spinelli's is so close to home.

A review of their jarred Putanesca sauce. OMFG!
I know how to make this.
But, this is the BEST jarred sauce I have ever had.
Chunky tomatoes. Lots of black olives and capers. Anchovy flavor. Awesome.

Excellent deli sandwiches.
HUGE selection of Italian foods.
Friendly staff.
No beer. So sad.
I hope Spinelli's is there for a 100 years.
The last time I was here, I was standing at the cash register when the FedEx guy walked in. As he was waiting for the delivery confirmation to be signed, he said to me, "wow, with this music (it was some sort of big-band thing, I think) and everything it really seems like we're in a different era!" Â That is exactly what I love about Spinelli's.
I like that I can't come here in a hurry. I like that the kids behind the counter are efficient and a little on the surly side (aren't we all a little sick of fake smiles?). I like their random selection of grocery items, none of which I would be likely to buy. The sandwiches are ridiculously yummy (I get the roasted veggie every time, actually, so I couldn't tell you about the others, but it is sandwich perfection), but that's not what keeps me coming back.
It's the fact that, In a world filled with insincerity and cookie-cutter corporate interiors, places like Spinelli's are good for the soul.
Last fall, I bought a house about a block away from Spinelli's Market. It has literally changed my life.
Not the house part- well, actually that too- but the proximity to this amazing, convenient, friendly and delicious Park Hill gem. Gone are the days of pizza delivery and average Thai takeout. Greatly reduced are the marathon weekly grocery trips and their attendant wasted produce.
If dinner is up in the air, I now wander down to Spinellis and get what I need. If I feel like cooking, maybe some homemade mozzarella, organic veggies, Italian pasta or fresh meat. No time to cook? Perhaps a nice big sub or some house-made mannicotti, soup or dessert (the tiramisu is particularly tasty.) So many options, so much yumminess.
On top of all of this good food, Mary Ellen and Jerry are always friendly and give the place its local spirit. They remember my name (and my fiance's name, and my dog's name... ) and always have a biscuit for the pup. Their service and smiles make shopping at Spinelli's a completely pleasing experience, from the products to the service to the incredibly convenient (to me) location.
And yes, it does feel kind of East Coast-bodega-ish... which for us transplants, is just a little nostalgic icing on the cake.
I decided to visit Spinelli's deli In my quest to find a good, fast lunch near Skyland Park, and boy howdy, I'm glad I did. New favorite place.
Here's the play-by-play.
1. Â Parking.
Street parking is scarce on this block; it's an oddly dense little commercial oasis. You might have to park a block away and walk.
2. Â Food (and Groceries).
The sandwiches are a treat! Â And they come with a side of salad (potato, macaroni, etc) or fruit: "Just pick something from the produce section."
There must have been some pickle problems in the past: there is a sign by the pickle bucket saying something to the effect of, "Due to wasteful practices, pickles are no longer included with sandwiches. If you want a pickle, please take only one!" If it warranted special pickle signage, then the pickle wasting must have been pretty serious!
I'd never waste a pickle.
Your vegetarian sandwiches are the roasted vegetable sandwich, which is fantastic, and the caprese, which is an equally delicious fresh veggie option. Both include huge chunks of their homemade mozzarella.
Grocery-wise, it looks like they have an admirable selection of fruits and vegetables, tons of different dry pastas, some dry goods and few frozen goods. I'm excited to start doing some grocery shopping here.
3. Staffing and seating.
The staff I've encountered are polite without being overly friendly. Which is fine. It's a market, not a restaurant. They're not waitstaff.
If you want to eat in, be aware that there are only two tables, with a total of eight seats.
4. Paying.
I wondered if such a small, independent establishment would accept American Express, and they do! Yippee for that.
I've been walking past Spinelli's for probably close to 30 years - very often,in fact, when we used to eat at the Cherry Tomato at least once a week. Â And, I've always wondered about the place. Â No one loves little family owned places with long histories more than I. Â So, based on the great reviews here I decided to give them a try.
I was helping a friend put together an Italian dinner at her home for a group of friends and thought since I was making everything else from scratch I'd at least have Spinelli's put together the antipasto platter. Â So, I called them up, they recommended a small platter for our group and even said that I could bring my own platter in and they would assemble it. Â Nice touch not to schlepp into a party carrying a tin foil takeout platter. Â They couldn't have been nicer to deal with.
What I received when I went to pick it up was pretty disappointing for $60.  I am partly to blame because I trusted that for that amount of money I would get a nice assortment of wonderful Italian goodies artfully arranged.  Quantity and quality of ingredients  was not a problem. Â
The problems were two-fold. Â
1) Lack of variety. Â I wrongly assumed that the meats would include some prosciutto, mortadella, capocollo, etc. Â Nope just a bunch of piles of different sausage. Â Three cheeses - only one of which was cut into cubes the others left whole in their rinds complete with packaging labels. Â Veggies didn't include artichoke hearts which IMO are a requirement for an antipasto plater.
2)Everything was just piled haphazardly on the platter. Â A big pile of this, next to a big pile of that - not attractive or enticing in any way.
So, I paid for it - kicking myself in the ass for not having been more specific when I ordered it. Â Went to another deli and bought some items to add some variety. Â Went home, took about a pound of sausage off the platter and froze it for future use, rearranged the platter to make room for some new and different meats, cut up the cheese, and sprinkled in some artichoke hearts. Â Looks pretty good now.
So, I'm not writing Spinelli's off just yet but my advice is to be specific with them about what you want. Â They seem eager to please, as they should be at $60 for an antipasto platter for 6 people.
Don't feel silly about getting right into this tiny family-owned Italian market and heading directly to the deli counter in the back. That's where the awesome deli sandwiches are made to order. Fresh and delicious, piled high with luxurious amounts of sliced meats. While you are waiting for your pile of flavor, you can browse the precious little aisles of groceries that fill the market.
I love ordering a sandwich here. It warms my heart to support this business. The sandwiches always taste like delicious quality at a reasonable price. Â My only word of warning is there's not much seating available. But let's say you get your sandwich to go and eat it at home while watching the Food Network, or go have a picnic, or something. Live it up!
Well, hot damn!
I love me a Mexican market. Tortillas, random sauces, cheap as hell cheeses, Jesus candles... the list goes on.
While Portland has plenty of Mexican markets, what we're really missing is a really good Italian deli/market like Spinelli's. We just don't seem to have one anywhere. As a result, my jealousy is high that the residents of the Colorado and 23rd area have access to this awesome little market that is as much Italian influenced as it is a normal market with run of the mill items. See, you can get cans of Dole pineapple in the same aisle that you can pick up some homemade tiramisu, or the boxed version around the corner. Manicotti ready to be thrown into your oven, again, handmade. Gnocchi. Torteliini, Pizzas. Spimonies. Italian deserts. Plenty of products that, based on the packaging, are obviously imported from Italy. The list goes on and on and on.
And that's not all. In the back of the store is a full service deli with more cheese than I should be allowed to look at and drool over in a day's time. The sandwiches are pretty awesome too. You can tell care is placed into the construction of the sandwich AND the ingredients are either freshly made in store, or are top quality from somewhere else. I had the classic Italian sub for lunch (pictured) and it was nothing less than awesome.
This is the Italian equivalent of your average Mexican Tienda. I'm jealous as hell. You people best enjoy this, and enjoy it often.
It's pricey but worth every penny. The Spinelli's are good people and there's a really good vibe in the place that one can expect from a family owned and operated bodega. I always plan on expanding from my usual sandwich order, but I can't get away from Jerry's Italian... It's so good.
The gnochi they sell here is outstanding too and I really like the canned stuffed grape leaves they have. Also, their heirloom tomatoes are worth the excessive cost per lb. I'm not a big fan of raw tomato, but these don't even really need salt. Also, their housemade caesar dressing is unbelievably good as are their crotons. The place is really a goldmine for all kinds of delicious things.
This market is AMAZING!!! Â Their made to order sandwiches are huge and delicious. Â A must is their homemade Caesar Salad dressing. Â They also have pre-made Italian dinners that you can pick up which I have yet to try. Plus, the owners are super nice.
If you haven't been to this Park Hill gem, you have got to go!!!
The first time I went in when I was naieve, I asked the cashier/owner why she didn't carry diapers. Â She said, "Why would I carry diapers, in this neighborhood I couldn't keep them stocked!" Â Crazy old bird, I thought, what kind of business savvy is that?!
Spinelli's appears to be a typical neighborhood grocery, but peel back the layers and Suprise! Â The most perfect gourmet italian shop tucked away in Park Hill. Â Just like the Cheers of Park Hill, where everyone seems to know everyone's name. Â
They make their own mozzerella, and are chock full of gourmet delights you might never have seen; salted capers, dried mushrooms in every flavor, cheeses, meats, dried hand-made pastas, creamy Greek Yoghurt, their own pasta sauces and dinners to go, the list goes on.
They even have these tiny little cannisters of  flavored whipped cream that I am absolutely dying to try.
I get it. Â They don't sell diapers because it would be too *easy*. Â They might not know your name (yet), but you will be glad you came...
I stopped in here on a recommendation from a friend and was very impressed. Â It was like stepping into the set of a movie; it has the feel of the family owned small-business market, something I wasn't sure existed anymore. Â The people behind the counter were friendly and the sandwich I had was delicious. Â
I hope to make it back again soon.
FANTASTIC neighborhood market. Â You probably can't do all your shopping here, but if you need produce, meats and cheeses, some odds and ends, and something delicious, this is the place for you!
The most specialist treat is that they actually make entrees for you! Â Each month, they have a set menu of entrees every other day. Â You can call and reserve what sounds appetizing to you. Â The best part? Â Two servings of healthy, fresh food for under $13. Â It's the ultimate take-out steal. Â Get it home, heat it up in the oven...bliss. Â Last night, we had the chicken saltimbocca, and I couldn't believe how good it was. Â Divine!
They've got a great thing going here at Spinelli's!
Maybe Kat A will not feel so naked if I stand beside her and say I love Spinelli's Market too. I love it not for the deli (I am not a deli person) but for the convenience, the produce, and the owners. Most times Spinelli's has the forgotten item I need for a meal and I can get to the market and back home in less than 20 minutes. (Any other large chain market has the hour factor even for one item). Spinelli's is also my one stop shop for that special Italian meal I need to whip up for whatever reason (like guess what honey, I bought another horse) ...from a nice cheese appetizer to the homemade tiramisu, it will look like you spent hours.
And of course the main reason you hear why people keep going back, Mary Ellen and Jerry Spinelli. They are just great people who care about their neighbors.
Dear Spinelli's Market,
Hi! How are you? I'm good. I've been wrestling with my feelings toward you for a while, and my friends told me I just needed to tell you and get it out.
I love you.
There. I said it.
I feel so naked now.
It's just that your sandwiches and side salads are so delicious. Your employees are so nice. I mean, I would be stupid not to love a place with such a strong sense of home permeating throughout. Â I also have a crush on how quickly you construct people's orders, the produce you have available, and the fact you sell Yoohoo.
I will write you more later when I have your menu in hand. You are 2Good 2Be 4Gotten. Stay cool and have a good summer vacation. Let's slow dance to Styx sometime soon.
Hearts and stuff,
Kat
I'm cheating sort of... I've never been to Spinelli's personally but I just took 2 bites out of my friends sando. Â It's called Jerry's Classic Italian Sub. Â Now I don't know who Jerry is... yet but I can tell you that was the nicest thing I have put in my mouth in a LONG time. Â
Seriously, a great tasting sub with a nice amount of meat and the bread is a bit crusty and rustic on the outside but moist and soft in the inside. Â There was a little Italian Dressing in there that did wonders and created a nice balance in my mouth. Â
I cannot wait to go on my own. Â I can't wait to have Jerry all on my own!
____________
I went back with a friend on 08/26/07 and we ordered the Jerry's (obvi) and the Tuscany (slices of "real" turkey, goat cheese, pears, pesto sauce and arugula) and spilt them. Â Def. go with the Jerry's has way more punch and SABOR than Tuscany. Â Still it was very lovely! Â I also picked up some Fresh Mozarella (I mean it was still warm and reminded me of an unfried Rocky Mountain Oyster in my hand), some vine ripenend tomatoes and fresh Basil. Â Can't wait to make a little Caprese Salad! Â So good.
"You've stolen my heart," is what my grandmother Rosemarie used to say to me, in her Brooklyn kitchen, when i would do something nice for her (i.e., help her stuff manicotti, or compliment her on a meal well cooked). This is what i think every time i step in the doors of Spinelli's: I fall in love over and over again.
For any fan of fresh Italian meats, this place means the world (w/out having to travel to Carbonne's, which is also first rate, but further away--what, being over on W. 38th and all). Â They have it all.
And, to top it all off, they have an entree that they prepare every other day and offer for about $12 (serves two). Dishes like pancetta shrimp with pasta aglio e olio. i said, goddamn, it's delicious. Â And just to cosign the previous critique, they have fresh gnocchi. forilla, eat italian.
You'll think they're New York Italians, but Mary Ellen and Jerry Spinelli are Denver locals that have a great thing going in Park Hill.
The market is a general store for discerning hosts in need of that last minute box of crackers or pouch of gnocchi. The narrow aisles are not only packed with goodies, but with neighbors catching up on the latest gossip.
But it's the deli that brings in folks from near and far. For around $7 you can get a sandwich on delicious fresh bread and stacked high enough to have a cameo in a Blondie comic with Italian meats and cheeses. (When you go, please please please refrain from doing a giddy jig at the register, I don't want them to know that they could charge a lot more for these masterpieces.) Â My favorites are the Turkey Cranberry Gouda and the Meatball Sub.
Be sure to grab a bag of pizza dough from the cooler after you pick up your sandwich. Your friends will be amazed at how great your homemade pizza is (and whether you tell them that you bought the dough is between you and the dough.) On a lucky day, you might find a platter topped with balls of homemade mozzerella, too!
In the opposite cooler, you'll find dinner cheats: quiche, stuffed shells, soup and salads, any of which you'd be proud to claim as your own creations (again, that's between you and the quiche).
I appreciate the ample dog parking out front, and if your dog is particularly good, Mary Ellen might have a biscuit for him. Â But car parking is sometimes at a premium, and don't expect a treat for blocking the alley.
