Really great looking cocktail and wine list but awkward, slow service.  Took a long time to be greeted and served on a slow Tuesday night.  Anything remarkable about the cocktail list was eliminated by the poor service.

Food is average and a little pricey, but the cocktails are excellent.  Fresh fruit instead of juice in a lot of them and well worth the extra cost for them.  I work downtown and this is an excellent place for an after work drink to ease the stress off.

Nice place for a drink and more upscale than Humpy's next door, which is another old time establishment I used to love when I was visiting Elmendorf AFB a few years back, but that too has gone down hill.  This is trendy.  The atmosphere is nice although it's small.  Good place to start out.  The food is average, except for the sweet potato fries..they rock!

It was the start of saturday evening so not even busy, yet it took awhile for a server to greet us at the table, a bit weird since there were about five different people walking back and forth behind the bar. So tried a few of the appetizers since it was my first time there. Had the Kobe sliders which were served on some hawaiian sweet rolls very tasty. The patties were a great portion. We also had the buffalo chicken skewers which I didn't really care for. The cherry tomatoes and little celery bits you can just trash, it added nothing to it and the chicken was bland just seemed dry and tasted like hot sauce. Our server was very nice.

SubZero comes up prominently in web searches for Best Cocktails in Anchorage, and I'm pleased to say they did not disappoint!

I stopped in here with one thing in mind - gin martini; dry.  I looked over their selection on the bar, and was thinking about going with Hendricks, however I asked the bartender what she recommended, and she suggested The Botanist, and remarked that it was her current favorite gin.

Happily, she did not steer me wrong!  This was one of the best martinis I've had!  Regarding the particulars, their martini is shaken (sacrilege to some for a gin martini, I know), and the vermouth was applied to the glass with a spray bottle.  I believe they use Martini & Rossi dry vermouth, however I cannot swear to this.  I specified three olives, however they will also do a lemon twist.

If you're a gin martini fan, try SubZero!

I went to SubZero before they remodeled it and swore I would never go back again. However, since then, they've remodeled and it's now a better place for casual drinks and an appetizer considering what Anchorage offers. I've been there twice since the remodel and am somewhat pleased with the new atmosphere. The service was pretty slow and it wasn't even busy (got there at 4:15pm on Friday). I tried the Kobe beef sliders for $14, which were very good and overpriced. I also had the fried crab sliders that were simply itty bitty bites placed on greens and hawaiian sweet rolls with no satisfying flavor. The crab sliders were half off ($6) for happy hour and, honestly, they weren't even worth that. I will not get these again. Their beer selection was ok and limited. They had only one local microbrew on tap - King Street's IPA - and I see they change their beer taps frequently. I am not sure when I will go back there again... Compared to other places in town, this one is in the bottom five of my list of places to go.

Great place to meet friends and be social.  It's smallish but I've never had a problem finding seating.  On a busy Saturday night, my friends and I scored a cozy spot on one of several leather coaches.  Lots of specialty cocktails and upscale appetizer options.  Live music on occasion.  Service is friendly, a bit on the slow side during busy times.

The drinks are a little over priced but other than that I like the place.  The bartenders and servers are polite and friendly.  Food is from Humpy's next door.  Sometimes it takes a while to get food.  I'd recommend just sticking to appetizers.

The bar is well lite and clean.  The tables with bar chairs are comfortable and the art work on the walls is always changing.  SubZero is unique in Anchorage.

Go to start your night or with coworkers for happy hour.

Awesome beer selection and bartenders make excellent drinks. Kinda high on the cheese factor but strangely adds to the ambiance. And the have mother effing criss cut fries and bomb happy hour specials

This place has amazing cocktails and a very friendly environment.  A lot of the bars seem like they are local's places, but this one is a little higher end, and I had a great time here

I really like the vibe and style of Sub Zero now that they have changed the decor from stark ice bar to warm and welcoming chill space. During the week they often have great live music which is nice to listen to.

I also really like the loungy area they have which is great for a group of friends to relax in while drinking the delicious cocktails. So good! The food is pretty good and the staff is friendly.

Classy downtown bar for conversation and meeting friends. Casual, upscale ambiance. Comfortable seating areas. Extensive offerings of spirits and beers. Knowledgeable, professional staff. Great spot for private parties! The best part is.....the Kobe sliders are to die for!...... and I own a hamburger joint!

Since I don't drink, when I go to happy hour it is for the food and environment.  Subzero has great ambiance, with the dimmed lighting and classy high tables.  However, the service is terrible and the food, while good, is overpriced.

It takes surprisingly long to get your drinks here.  My friends ordered some wine and I got a soda, and after the waitress took the order, the drinks didn't come for several several minutes.  It's just pouring wine!  What was so frustrating was that after it took so long for the waitress to fill the order, she left and we could see the drinks at the counter but they weren't served for quite a while.

I've gotten the Kobe beef sliders (I think 3 little sliders for...$14?).  Food here takes forever to come out of the kitchen.  The first time we ordered them, they came out after about a 20 minute wait covered in cheese.  Cheese wasn't listed as an ingredient on the menu, and I'm allergic.  So I was without food that first time because we were pressed for time, and the food had taken so long to arrive.

The second time I made sure to specify when ordering the Kobe beef sliders to have no cheese.  I think the kitchen realized they had put cheese on them and then presented ones without cheese on them to me on a plate littered with shaved cheese.  I couldn't believe the waitress allowed that to come to the table since I had told her I was allergic.  So we sent that back again and finally received sliders without cheese on a cheese-less plate.  Really, was that so much to ask for?  Absolutely ridiculous and again the wait was super long.

The redeeming thing about this place is that yes, the sliders are quite good, once they come out as you asked after 20 minutes of waiting.

Second favorite place to go to when Im need for a drink with my friends!

Classy environment, dim but not dark, and various seating areas (bar, high top round tables, couches).

Best to go for happy hour appetizers (half price)! I absolutely loveee their crab cake sliders and calamari (a bit sweet). YUM!

Yes, drinks can be pretty expensive but they are pretty unique so Im sure once you read about it, you'll want to give it a try.

Drinks are pretty pricey here, but the service is good. A nice change from the Pio, F Street, and all the other noisy crowded places downtown.

My friend's boyfriend insisted I'd love this place, and I can safely say I absolutely do. :D

It wasn't terribly busy for a Saturday night - the three of us found seats at the bar and there were a couple of tables open. I love lounges with a diverse and fun cocktail list, and this didn't disappoint. There were SO many I wanted to try, but for obvious reasons I could not. I had a champagne cocktail [I wish I could remember the name of it, but it had Ciroc and Grand Marnier] and an old fashioned [I wanted to emulate Don Draper]. The "dessert" cocktail list looked rich and nothing short of heaven - I can't wait to try the Bananas Foster cocktail, and they even had a hot toddy and hot buttered rum on there [two fun and yummy winter drinks].

Service was very attentive with good recommendations. I'm looking forward to going back with my husband in tow. :)

I'm a huge fan of SubZero, particularly their espresso martinis, which has become "the" drink for my friends and me. They have a delicious food menu, their service is always stellar, and it's quite the great atmosphere.

My only gripe? The sound with live performers! It's awful. When it's a DJ night, that's one thing; that's a specific musical event. But when you are trying to hang out after a day's work with your friends, and someone is wailing on a microphone with an extremely loud guitar or other instrument, you can't even hold a conversation. I don't know if it's the performers' or the bar's responsibility to maintain the sound, but it can be really overwhelming and disruptive.

I think the main issue with SZ, is that it's trying to go for that lounge bar atmosphere in a space that is too small and not set up for those acoustics.

Other than that, it's great. They don't have live music every night, as far as I know, so don't let the sound issue deter you from patronizing the spot.

A great place to relax that's a cut above most downtown places. Martinis are excellent, as is the food. Attentive bar service on each of my visits.

Nice assortment of lounge chairs and tall tables and stools. The crowd is far more refined in here, you'd think you were in San Diego or Dallas. The rowdies, bearded outdoorsmen, fishermen, and pilots are all next door at Humpies ;)

Live jazz on a certain night, not sure which. Give this place a go if you're looking for a taste of class while in downtown Anchorage...

Beautiful people, nice surroundings and a great beer list.  How the crowd behind Humpy's could also be behind this place is surely one of the world's great mysteries.

My only gripe?  The beer prices are atrociously high, even if the selection is fancy as it is vast.

I have been here quite a few times in the past years but have not been here since the redecorating that must have happened within the last 3 months. Before the decor was a lot of crazy art, bubbles, TV, mirrors and metal, and great drinks and wine.

The great drinks and wine are still here but the decor has changed greatly. Picture lounge/ brothel ambiance, Billie Holidayish music playing in the background, with beautiful ladies serving drinks and food. The bubbly windows have been replaced with long, dark maroon, swirly fitting drapes, maroon and red and orange/yellow walls, where every space is fitted with art pieces that I don't know the style of.

We ordered the Ribeye, med rare, and the cumin seared ahi, which sadly those two items were both not in stock. Dang. But, persevered through the menu again and got the Kobe Beef Sliders and the Ginger Scallops Salad tossed in Lemongrass Vinaigrette. The Sliders were served with a mushrooms, caramelized onions, all tossed in a salty demi glaze, served atop a beef patty and bun that was smeared with mayonnaise. The Ginger Scallop salad was very good. The dressing is very light and offset the heaviness of the ginger glaze on the scallops. For dessert we got the Butterscotch Overdose. Don't think of having this alone. The dessert is served in a large sunday bowl, that has a fudge exterior and a rich butterscotch interior, a bit like tapioca pudding, and topped with whipped cream and a mint leaf. The dessert screams overindulgence. We drank the Martin Ray Cabernet (a lovely lovely red), a Midnight Sun Sockeye IPA, and a Unibrou.

This is a great place to come to start the night, or end it after a night at the performance theatre.
