Growing up, I used to come and eat here all the time for lunch on Sunday afternoons with friends (mostly because we were too young to drive and it was walking distance from the church we went to) but I always enjoyed it. I was in town again recently and stopped by with my dad. Previous experience wasn't always superb, but it was by no means terrible.
My visit recently, however, was so great. The aesthetic of the restaurant itself is dark and not incredibly eye-catching by any means, but it certainly lives up to its sports bar status through and through. If you're looking for fine dining, you won't find it here. But you will find a great assortment of delicious pizza made from scratch as well as other guilty-pleasure items like Italian Sausage Ptarmigan Grilled Sub. (My choice this past go-around!)
The service was great. Our waiter was very friendly and efficient, also we ordered Calamari as a starter and it came out super fast and was some of the best fried Calamari I have ever had. (Not that I'm an expert, but boy was it good!)
Will I say that this is my most favorite restaurant to go to? Probably not, but the food is spot-on even if it has a slight hole-in-the-wall feel to it. Definitely recommend it! Also good if you don't have too much time to sit around but still want a filling meal. The food all came out super fast!
I live in Scotch Plains so Sun Tavern is one of our local bars. My girlfriend and I go here almost once a week and we love it here. They have a good menu and every time I go I try to get something different, and I've yet to be disappointed. They also have a good drink selection. We've never sat in the dining room section, we usually sit at the bar and the service here is great. We've experienced a few different bartenders and all of them are attentive, nice and helpful. They're great with recommending food/drinks and food always comes out fast. As everyone has said, their pizza is really good and that's what they're known for; but the rest of the food is really good too (especially the salads). Prices are good too. For 2 of us to eat and have a couple drinks each it never seems to cost more than $35. Highly recommend this place as a good local bar so grab food at when you don't feel like cooking or just feel like getting out of the house.
Review Source:Sun Tavern in Fanwood is a great place to have a few beers at the bar, order a pizza and some wings with your buddies and watch a game. The bar area is massive, lots of flat screens and a giant bar with lots of stools. A good selection of imports and domestics on draft, lots of seasonals(not a craft beer type of place) The best things to order here are the pizzas, burgers and apps like nachos and wings.
Review Source:The Sun Tavern is a great place to grab dinner and a beer.  They make their own pizza, which is very good.  I really like the buffalo chicken pizza.  It is amazing!  The sandwiches are also great.  My favorite is the cheese steak while my wife loves the chicken parm hero.  They  have a nice big bar with a lot of TVs so you can catch your favorite game.
Review Source:Eh, it's just "okay" for a sports bar.
Their beer selection is moderately extensive, but the Magic Hat #9 I ordered was a bit flat. I made the mistake of ordering a second one, hoping that it would magically be different; it wasn't. And while there are many flat screen TVs that seem to hit most, if not all, angles, when Monday night football is on they're all tuned to the same station. Â So much for trying to watch the Yanks play on a Monday night.
We stopped by with friends at the end of a visit, for a light dinner. Â We were not there for the bar, but for the restaurant side of things. Â There is a nice selection of pizza, sandwiches, and appetizers. Â And the place is very family-friendly in the early evening. Â There was even a caricature artist there for the kids, who clearly was beloved by everyone under the age of 13 in the place. Â :-) Â And prices were inexpensive.
But unfortunately, I can not recommend the place overall. Â The service was slow, uninformed, and inattentive. Â The food was fine, but not great - the vegetables were surprisingly bitter. Â And the atmosphere made it difficult to talk with anyone who not immediately in front of you or next to you. Â
If you want a place for a good selection of inexpensive food, where the kids can run around, it is worth a try. Â If you want good food, good service, or a good conversation, there are much better options in the area.
Most nights I pass by the Sun Tavern and see a healthy amount of people in the parking lot, and a few weeks ago, I finally went in to see what all the hub bub was about.
I believe the place went under a renovation a few years ago while i was in college, but when I walk in, I couldn't tell. I had sat down for dinner, and well... to be frank, subpar. Their appetizers (bar food) was pretty good. The mozzarella sticks and the pizza were delicious with my beer, but the main entrees left something to be desired. The seating area also felt really old and dated (they even had non LCD tv's playing the games).
The bar area is large and would be good for a large hometown reunion. Drink prices are good, coupled with the pretty good appetizers, makes this a serviceable watering hole. I think this place benefits greatly from supply and demand. People demand to get wasted, and this is probably the closest bar in the immediate area. Depending on the mood, I might go back, but I'd most likely spend a little effort and head elsewhere.
The Sun Tavern is a great start-out or end-up-at bar. Â The bar area itself is huge and can accommodate a large group. Â Prices are always on the cheaper side even when it's not happy hour. Â The pizza was really good as was the spinach & artichoke dip. Â Service was not bad, you have to understand that the poor bartender has to run a full lap to get back to you. Â If you're going to watch a game I would not recommend doing it here as TVs are a bit hard to see. Â Happy hour 4 - 6:45pm $2.50 pints. Â Clientele is mostly blue collar workers looking to unwind with a beer.
Review Source:This review is for the tavern as a spot for a football Sunday.  To start it's time to get some new T.Vs.  I mean you can buy flat screens at best buy for like $35 there is no excuse for this enormous bar to have a rag-tag collection of box sets, a S#%&* projector, and LCDs with grainy picture.  I think one screen had M.A.S.H on because they said it was broken and the channel could not be changed.  Next problem is that the place gets packed with Steelers fans so they put the Steelers game on every single one of the 15 screens.  I understand you cater to your customers but other people come here to watch the NFL ticket and catch al the games.  The food here is nothing to write home about either.  At least the prices are decent and the beer is cold.  Can sum up Sundays here with terrible towels, terrible pizza, and terrible T.Vs            GO RAVENS
Review Source:This is a good bar / restaurant. The staff is friendly. The Sun Tavern is a good departure from the chain restaurants that dot the area. The food is standard bar / Italian food. There are a good bit of fried foods and sandwiches on the menu. While there isn't much being reinvented here, all the food is good. The Pizza is probably the best thing on the menu. It is delicious and fairly priced (at about $10 a pie).
This is a good place to go for a family with children looking for pizza, a group of people looking for some food and drinks, or even a date. My wife and I dine here fairly frequently and have never left unhappy.
The bar is very large and there are many TV's in the bar area. There is a good bar atmosphere here. You find a good mix of customers at the bar who are usually pretty friendly. This is the best bar in the area. Also, there are decent specials most days / nights of the week.
This place is a very crowded sports bar. It's loud and raucous, but a lot of people bring their families here, too, apparently to eat the pizza.
This is bar pizza. Maybe it tastes good if you are drunk. To me, it tastes exactly like the little, freezer-burned Roman pizzas that my mother used to buy for me at the supermarket 40 years ago. It is hard to tell where the cardboard carton ends and the pizza crust begins.
I have nothing against bar pizza. I love the bar pies at Spirito's in Elizabeth, and Kinchley's Tavern in Ramsey. I just don't think this place deserves the accolades.
The best pizza around here, IMO, is Emma's in Cranford.
I don't even know how to begin this review. I am finding this a hard write and this is why: As an NY Italian I am am ALMOST embarrassed to say that the 2 place in my area that make the best pizza is Cosi (I said it.. their Margarita pizza is good..) a dam food chain, and the 2nd is an Irish looking pub! The pizza is really good here, they have varies types and it's good. There ya go I said it. Every Italian owned pizzeria in a 5 mile radius of Cranford should get on their knees and beg their grandmothers for forgiveness... bunch of lazy dogs. As for Sun Tavern "Erin go braugh" you make a hella ofa pizza!
