Just got off the phone and waiting for the manager to call me. I ordered the tamale plate this morning and was about to finish the remainder of the food ... when I bit on a small rock in the refried beans. Â This is the third and finale time that I will eat any food from this place ... the last two times they got my order WRONG and had to toss most of the food out. I always get the same and in the past the tamales were so-so as not too much meat mostly cornmeal. This time I was asking myself "Where's the meat?" I wish I had eaten the rice and beans earlier with the tamales because I would have taken the entire meal back.
Santiago's is the way to go ... the Leetsdale store is only 3.5 / 13 minutes from this location and the place is clean and food is fresh and worth the money. They also have the price of each item on the menu.
Okay so I love Taco Mex and probably go here more than 1 person should...but it's so close to my house and $.99 tacos? Love it! However, do you like cheese, sour cream, and other fun things on your tacos? Then don't go here, b/c that's not what kind of taco place this is. Â This is real tacos, there are dudes on a grill with a meat spit out in front, there's a lady with a car and CDs she selling from the truck, and this place isn't winning any awards for cleanliness anytime soon. Why go here you ask? Well that's btw you and how you like meat spit.
Review Source:Maybe I was here early (11:15am) and perhaps the meat was cooked early in the morning. I ordered 5 Asada tacos that I have to say gave me mixed feelings.
The first 2 that I ate, the meat was dry and a little tough. I noticed the last 3 tasted better. Maybe it sat on the grill too long. I will try this place again since it was base on 1 item.
The nice benefit is Tacos here are only .99
Awesome street tacos! Hole in the wall place on Colfax that my husband adores. I've come to love it too. Simple, yet delicious Mexican food. The aqua frescas are delicious. Watermelon is my favorite. They also have a great salsa bar which adds to the yumminess of the tacos.
Now I think I'll have to venture out into the cold for lunch, I want tacos!
I was suprised this place was open on New Years Day. Ive never been disappointed with the food. From the Tacos to the Steak Burritos Smothered of course. They Are big and delicious and perfectly seasoned.
The food is always fresh and doesnt take to long to be cooked up and brought to you.
The Interior is always clean, even when busy you can always find a seat somewhere. The menu is easy to read and this place always has customers for a reason.
This place is right next to my university (both a blessing and a curse, but we'll not go into the latter). I always get the el pastor tacos, and some flan. The pastor meat is fabulous; the pineapple really gives the savory pork the extra depth of flavor that it needs. The flan is also great. It's not too sweet, and you can taste the cherry flavor throughout the slice. Sure, the tacos are small, but they're 99 cents. You can easily get full off of eight, and not break the bank. Sure, I've gotten the tamales, and the smothered burrito...but the tacos are where it's at. It's called Tacomex for a reason, and for such a good reason. Happy eating!
Review Source:I tracked this restaurant down after several of my visiting coworkers refused to go anywhere else for dinner. For three nights in a row. Once I tried the Al Pastor tacos, straight off the spit outside, I understood why. They were so delicious, and so cheap. The other tacos I had were very good as well. The horchata and agua frescas selection took me right back to my vacation in Mexico city. This is definitely my #1 place for tacos in Denver.
Review Source:Came here for a quick lunch off suggestions from yelp. Â The location is great, packed with people and friendly service. Â The menu is pretty extensive and it took me awhile to figure out what to get. Â I eventually went with the 99c tacos, and decided on pollo and carne asada. Â They were super delicious, but not much in the tacos except meat and cilantro. Â They were definitely much smaller than I ever imagined, or that I've ever gotten anywhere else, and thus slightly disappointing. Â However, for 99c, it was not bad.
Next time I will know to get like 4-5 tacos for a meal haha. Â Al pastor is also on the list to try!
This place is pure Awesome!!  Dollar street  taco's the way they should be!!  A great help yourself mini bar with every topping available.  Try the Cantaloupe drink.  It's like heaven down your throat!!  I haven't tried anything else off the menu, though i can imagine how delicious everything is.  Great wait staff, traditional Mexican interior.  First class!!
Review Source:Dunh da dunnnnnn--OLE!
Al Pastor--GET IN MY BELLY! Yeah, I whipped out the tired Austin Powers reference for these tacos. 'Cuz that's where I want em--all six greasy little meat pockets. And that's where I put 'em, along with a long flood of cinnamony horchata.
Been here several times for a quick taco fix for cheap & I've also gorged myself on the chorizo and lengua. The Al Pastor is the best, to me. Especially from the guy with the spitfire & griddle. Â Somehow, my eyes are ALWAYS bigger than my belly with these little suckers.
Yeah, I know that this place can seem sketch to some of those venturing out of their white-hood comfort zone, but get over it because it's freaking delicious and you're just being a paranoid cracker. You can always go back to Chipotle tomorrow.
Plus, you're not gonna find this kind of love for .99 anywhere  'cept for the 'Fax, if ya hear me.
I've been in Denver about 9 months now and I still haven't found the taco shop that I so desire. Until last night! This is exactly what I was looking for. They had 1.00 tacos. All the pickled veg and roasted jalapenos as well as 3 different salsas at their taco bar. The service was very friendly and they were all Hispanic folks which I love as well. I don't get tacos from Honkies that are good for a buck ever. They think they can charge more. Mexicans just put a certain love into their tacos. Anyway. I only gave 3 stars because they weren't the best I've ever had but they were good and cheap. I will try some other things there and then reassess my rating.
Review Source:Liked, but didn't love what I'd been told was one of the best breakfast burritos in Denver. (Did love the aqua frescas, however, but not enough to up their over-all rating).
The burrito, even smothered, was a bit on the dry and bland side. Tried the chorizo and the bacon versions and surprisingly ended up liking the bacon better. (Although, I guess no one's ever really surprised when they like the bacon thing better).
Maybe this was an unusual experience, given the number of excellent reviews this place has received in the past (or maybe, IMHO, the place may be a bit over-rated). Will check it out later and get back to you.
Hasta la vista, muchachos,
D
Al pastor is my friend. Especially when I've had too much to drunk after watching the Three Twins  at the Soiled Dove Underground. Were there three twins? I had too much to drunk. Chorizo is veddy good to me too! and pickled carrots that has halupeenios,a nd onions and vingur and thier salsas is veddy good to me and tastes like that too! The End

We discovered TacoMex during a hungry drive out East Colfax one night looking for a new place to try.
The first night that we went, there was counter service inside, and a food truck-looking taco stand outside. We patronized both. Our favorite tacos were the chorizo tacos and the al pastor. We loaded our tacos up with roasted onions, spicy marinated carrots and various salsas from the salsa bar. We'd been lamenting the loss of the salsa bar at El Pollo Loco on Federal. Now we know how stupid we were, because TacoMex is much better in every way.
I'd also recommend trying the ceviche tostada. It's loaded with shrimp and avocados, and is dirt cheap. This would be like a $15 plate of ceviche at a place like Tamayo!
We also had a torta, which was ok, but I'd definitely stick with the tacos and ceviche tostadas, as the were much better.
Tables are sometimes a little dirty, but that's nothing a paper towel or two can't address. Most of the ordering staff is bilingual, which is helpful, because the process of ordering tacos can be a little tricky between in the indoor and outdoor setups, but we figured it out.
Having just moved to Denver from Chicago, I have been on a search for my new go-to Mexican joint. Â Well, I think I found it. Â My boyfriend and I stopped in here on a Friday night and tried several of their 99 cent tacos. Â We were very impressed with the quality of the tacos. Â We tried the steak, chicken, chorizo, and pork. Â Each taco was very flavorful and delicious. Â I especially loved the fresh cilantro and onions on the tacos. Â We also tried a horchata, which was creamy and perfect. Â The meal cost $13 for both of us to eat. Â Hard to beat that. Â I definitely would stop here if you are craving some fresh, authentic Mexican for a reasonable price.
Review Source:East Colfax Taco Tour UYE! Â Sunday October 30th 2011 organized by our truly Tiffany N.
1st STOP TacoMex 1. Â
Man this placed is indeed burstling with patrons. Â Long queue and we managed to be seated outside. Â You order at the counter and the staffs send your order.
My order for that afternoon were :
* Â Taco Cabesa ($0.99)
* Â Taco Lengua ($0.99)
* Â Taco Tripa ($2.00)
You can get all the salsa and all the "trimmings" at the allocated salsa counter inside.
All in all its A-OK Tacos, though I cant deny, since we were seated outside, the weather though sunny but chilly, might "affect" my tastebud. Â I like the salsa offerings, spicy and has a kick to it. Â Â
Cant wait to return with Hubs and I hope to be seated inside so perhaps my review might differ.
Oh man. It's a hard ordering choice at TacoMex 1. Do you get the $1 tacos or do you go for the pozole? Based on my order envy I say you better try the pozole. Sure tacos are good (I mean they are tacos after all) and they are cheap, but the flavors wafting out of that warm bowl of stew are enough to drive a lady mad from desire, forgetting all about the tacos in front of her.
But, should you get tacos instead I would say you should go for Al Pastor, but you should really go for it if there is a spit outside roasting the meat when you arrive.
There is a ton of space inside here, but it does get super crowded so my vote would be to go during off times (like not right at noon) and your chances of getting a table will be much greater.
I too added the East Colfax Taco Tour.
$.99 a taco. Â How can you go wrong. Â My favorite was the chorizo - it had a nice flavor and a good balance of spice. Â The Al Pastor was nice as well. Â We had a couple of others and I found them to be average.
The place was packed and we had trouble finding seating for the group - which says a lot about a place.
It's definitely worth a stop in for some tasty bites.
Stop #1 on the October 2011 East Colfax Taco Tour UYE!
I went a little bit crazy here today, and ordered 6 different tacos.  Fortunately, I had a friend to share them with.  At a measly $.99 per taco, it is hard not to get a little carried away.  The carnitas was not as good I would have liked.  It was a tad greasy and not that flavorful, but I would give it a solid B.  The al pastor had nice flavor and texture, so I gave it an A.  The chorizo was nice and firm, had good spices without being too salty, so it earned an A.  The asada was a bit boring and mild, but deserved a B+.  The lengua  was moist and flavorful, but not that memorable, so I will go A-.  The pollo was perhaps the weakest offering, being bland and moist verging on soggy, C+.
The horchata was creamy with an aggressive cinnamon flavor. Â The posole rojo looked very tasty, but I decided to save room for more tacos. The condiment bar was minimal, but the salsas had good flavor.
We showed up just before noon on a Sunday, and the place was packed. Â We shivered in the shade at the outside picnic tables. Â However, the Sunday crowd lessened by 12:30pm, and we could have grabbed an inside table. Â The place looks very nice from the outside and the the cleanliness is above average.
Good Lord, Tacomex, how did you get SO AWESOME?
And why have I not discovered you sooner?
Driving around looking for a decent Taqueria is a challenge here in Denver. Not because thy're scarce, but because there seems to be one on every corner. So that night, we were driving down Colfax, looking for eats, when I noticed the giant crowd there, and the food truck like setup outside, with the spits of Aul pastor and vats of cooking meats, calling all foodies to dive in.
When we got inside, the place was jam-packed with people, really happening. I thought little of it because it was a Friday night. I should have taken more notice.
We waited in a crazy-long line to order; and there were no prices listed on the menu. I deeply considered this as waited. However, the staff was incredibly efficient at zooming through what seemed like an unmanageable line upon first glance, and I had to come up with something on the fly. I ordered two chorizo tacos, a jarritos, and a Ceviche Tostada. My husband ordered the tacos al pastor, and we took a seat.
Now, the first thing that caught my eye was the salsa bar. I thought I had died and gone to salsa and condiment heaven. They had chipotle salsa, avocado salsa, even a mixed vegetable with jalapenos, pickled in a delicious manner. It was a salsa lover's delight.
I was shocked when our whole order came to 13 dollars for my entire 3 person family to eat, and I prayed right then that we hadn't chosen a cheap, inedible dinner.
When the food was up, a person taking orders and working the counter brought it to us, and even though we were supposed to have gone outside to the meat spits to get the Al Pastor tacos, the lady went and got them for us, as we did not yet know the drill. Â
The Ceviche tostada was, hands down, the most amazing one I've had in some time, and that takes some doing, as I am a rabid fan of Ceviche. I loved the way they served it between two hard tostadas, making it 100 percent less messy than the open-faced ones at Tacos Y Salsas. The chorizo tacos were also amazing, and my two-year old gobbled up at least half of the food we ordered, which we were never able to get her to do at  either Tacos Y Salsas or Tacos Junior. This is the first endorsement. The second endorsement was that the tacos may have looked small, but filled everyone up nicely. They make the tacos on soft corn tortillas, fresh, hot and full of goodness, and double-wrap the tacos in them.
After we got done, there was not a drop of salsa or a single shred of taco meat left on anyone's plate...not even the plate of my two-year-old. That's saying a lot for her.
The atmosphere was happening, noisy in a good way, and fun. We'll definitely be going back to this place again and again and again.
Can I get a witness?! Â Tacos Al Pastor! Â Amen!!
I had 3. Â Then ordered 3 more. Â These are typico modest street tacos though, it is no huge feat to scarf 6 of these. Â There were small bits of pineapple in this batch and it was scrumptious. I don't know if the pineapple is always included in the Pastor, or if the lady asked me and I said yes to pineapple (I said "si" to at least one question - no comprendo). Either way, ya can't go wrong. Â Lots of sauces n' such to experiment with.
Interior is comfortable, feels like many California taquerias - and clean! Â Will take wife and kiddos here for a thrifty, toothsome lunch or dinner. Â The menu is extensive, many full platos to choose from. Â
$6.50 out the door, full and happy.
I shoulda ordered 3 more.
This is the best place for $1 tacos, not just at lunch, anytime. Â They have a fantastic salsa bar, with several types of sauces and "add-ons" that are very tasty.
This restaurant sports not just the typical asada, carnitas, and chicken tacos, but also some more "traditional" things like cheek, tongue, intestine, and so on. Â But they are ALL worth trying!!
TacoMex of course has other things than tacos, including an aguas frescas bar, but soon you'll see there is no where better to go for cheap eats on the east-side.
Tacomex, Tacomex, I...love you!....Yes...I...do!
I've been meaning to write a review for this joint, and after seeing the ROTD I was inspired to show some love.
I just moved into the 'hood and Tacomex is conveniently located down the street from me.  I was first lured in upon noticing a small, but consistent gathering directly outside the restaurant.  They have a cook set up  underneath a tent that will serve you up some killer tacos, one of which I'm addicted to.  Maybe because they consist of the magical ingredients that save me from hangovers the following day?  What ever it is, the pork tacos are cooked to perfection, and require no toppings (cheese, sour cream, lettuce, etc) to enjoy.  On that note, you can save yourself from an awkward situation by ordering inside.  Do not attempt to order from the cook outside under the tent.  He doesn't speak a lick of English, unless you count "ticket", which is why you need to order inside...to get your ticket...then take that little ticket outside to the cook in the tent and prepare to be amazed!
I also love saying "I told you so"
People don't come to my neighborhood for food that often. Â I don't live in the Highlands, or LoDo, or even in Stapleton. Â I live, no matter how you slice it, in East Colfax. Â And. I. Love. It.
Living in a largely Hispanic neighborhood has taught me a lot.
That old ladies who push kids on bikes are the most generous.
That dogs don't expressly "need" leashes. Â
And that "Think outside the bun" means a lot more when you AREN'T talking about Taco Bell.
If you're smart, when you "think outside the bun", you'll get in the car and drive east on Colfax until you feel like you absolutely HAVE to lock your doors. Â Then you'll be in my neighborhood, and you'll be at TacoMex.
TacoMex is a Mexican's Mexican restaurant. Â No one will ask you if you want corn or flour here, and your juice will say Jumex, not Mott's. Â But you won't be drinking juice. Â If you're smart, you'll drink a big, icy Styrofoam cup of horchata. Â and then maybe another. Â
While you're sucking down the horchata, order some tacos. Â Order them "al pastor," and order them "de tripita" and "de cabeza." Â If you really want a chicken taco-- go to Taco Bell, cause it'd be a waste of time at TacoMex.
The Mariscos are good, and so is the menudo when they have it. Â The condiment bar is off the hook.
Some things aren't great. Â Huevos Rancheros are usually too dry for me, and Chiles Relleno are too soft. Â But you can get good huevos at emilio's, and good chiles relleno at santiago's. Â You came all the way to East Colfax because you're smart enough to know where to find the best damn tacos in town.
.99 cent tacos? Yes please. Â They are tiny cantina style tacos, as they should be, and I find myself eating 3 or 4 before I feel naughty. Â Al pastor, lengua and chorizo are stand outs, and if there are cooks outside, definitely get your chorizo or pastor from them. Avoid the chicken tacos, because they are sad, boring, and for the weak stomached. Carnitas tacos are hit or miss, sometimes they're great, sometimes you get the bottom of the bowl and the meat is a little tough.
I also once ordered 20 tacos of different varieties, and they were great about packing them up, making sure they were separated by meat, and even gave us a ton of cilantro and onions so we could add them ourselves.
Also fantastic is the light green condiment on their salsa bar, I think it's avocado crema, but I've never asked, I just slather it all over my tacos. Â What bums me out about the salsa bar is that the limes are never very juicy, always under ripe and hard to squeeze.
Beans are really delicious and fill you up, as they're probably loaded with delicious lard. Â Sopes are good if you're looking for something a little less taco-related.
But hey, the name is TacoMex. Why wouldn't you order the tacos?
Tacomex's food is good. Try it. Â I'm not saying it's great... (actually, the tacos are, pretty great) but Mexican food is a bit of a religion for me. While I leave tacomex satisfied, and happy with myself, great Mexican food can make one see the light of day, want to praise the heavens for creating such wonderful delights that taste so, so good and are (cardiovasculary speaking ) so, so,so bad for you. Â
Like I said, get the tacos. Con chorizo, lengua, and al pastor are my favorites. I also love the carnitas here. My friends are fans of the cabeza tacos... I'm not quite bold enough for those.
The smothered burrito is another of my favorites. This establishment would get 4 stars if the green chile was a little better... It's not bad green chile, just ok. Â
Chile rellenos are good... Skip the nachos though, unless you're on a drunk tacomex run (in which case, they're delicious). Breakfast is solid here, and it's cheap!
The horchata here is also good, not great. Somewhere in the middle, I suppose; but great horchata puts new life in me, and tacomex's horchata does not.
In summation though, the staff is friendly here, the food is good, and the price is right. Three and 1/2 stars, tie going to the great Mexican meals I've had throughout my life. If they were open right now, I might consider a semi-drunk tacomex run, but it will have to wait.
Great refritos! They taste as if they are cooked with lard, as they should be. The 99 cent tacos looked really good except they were out of carnitas the day I went so I opted for the cheese enchilada plate (hence the refritos). The enchiladas were pretty standard, nothing really special and the green chili tasted more like tomatilla sauce - tasty but not what I would call green chili. They do have some kick-ass sauces at the condiments bar.
The service was quick and friendly and the overall atmosphere was fine - however they could turn up the thermostat about 10 degrees as it was freezing inside.
Overall I liked TacoMex but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there.
I had the 99 cent tacos. Al Pastor, Carne Asada, Chorizo.
Yummy.
These are the perfect size and very tasty.
The salsas and condiments are limited but, again, are just right.
The atmosphere was festive with lots of bright colors and Christmas decorations. Many people enjoying their lunches.
The menu is strange as there are no prices shown. But, "just ask and I will tell what an item costs". Humorous.
The one negative is that temperature was way too low inside. Almost cold.
How do you make your mouth, tummy and checking account simultaneously happy? Get thee to Taco Mex. I've visited #1 a few times, but sources say #3 may be just as tasty. I'm not sure what's up with #2. Someone please tell me!
I must say, it's hard to beat a .99 taco and I can vouch for the el pastor version, although there's about 10 different varieties to choose from. Double stacked small tacos here, fyi. Best to specify whether you want onions and cilantro on the top (that means you, certain family member) otherwise, it will be served on top and everyone who works there will look at you like you're cray cray when you get worked up about it.
I'm a salsa-bar lover, and in this category TMex (that's what I'm going to call it from now on) does not disappoint - fill up on salsa verde, smoky red salsa, guacamole crema, those dastardly roasted jalapenos that I have a love/hate relationship with, pickled onion/carrot salad and some other goodies. The horchata is flavorful and helps quench the flames ignited by the salsas, although the chips appear to be the round bagged variety so nothing special there. The shrimp ceviche is also fresh and tasty, I highly recommend. Apparently we have "runny beans" in this state (according to aforementioned family member) but I didn't think they were weird at all. Just weird that they were served in a styrofoam container.
If you play your cards right, you can get out of here with a little more than a fiver. Be sure to grab a booth or a table and soak in the eye-popping (yet super clean) decor. Your paper towels and condiments are on each table, thank you very much.
PS. Can I say, I love that you can get a carton of cheez-balls to go?!
After working up an appetite at the range we find ourselves taking an adventure down Colfax looking for this 4 star yelp Mexican joint we found on our yelp app (gotta love it, use it and appreciate it). Â We roll up and they are cooking the Pastor on a vertical spit outside on a sidewalk style cart...I'm from Gardena, CA so I'm 100% down for that. Â
So we order inside pretty much every $1 meat taco on the menu...and a wet burrito, against better judgment as I'll go into later. Â So as we wait with our large Horchata. Â Creamy, delicious, cold (great ice to horchata ratio) but lacked the cinnamon kick that all horchatas must have. Â But very satisfying to say the least.
Now with receipt in hand I watch as the taco surgeon dips our double stacked tortillas in manteca, the beautifully golden liquid that sits awaiting to flavor anything you have the courage to bless with it's presence or otherwise known as lard. Â Meats are cut, smashed, corralled then piled on the succulent spheres and away I go plate in hand trying not to indulge before I sit with my awaiting gf.
Okay I'll stop with the BS. Â The tacos all had an eerily similar nutmeg-like after taste and the meat felt under cooked. Â I like taco meat to have a bit of a char and bounce back texture. Â These meats were almost tofu if you can imagine that. Â Lacked a salt kick as well so I found myself almost lost in a land I've frequented almost daily in my life (Gardena is very rich with Hispanic heritage as well as cuisine). Â
Hello wet burrito, and as promised let me pick up from earlier. Â I've had a wet burrito at Super A's in Santa Ana, CA and I've NEVER had any burrito come in throwing distance of it's flavor and overall greatness. Â For the benefit of my growing carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms we'll refer to Super A's as "SA's". Â
This burrito had a soggy tortilla, while SA's is almost grilled for a solid structural integrity, so it's not like a gooey tasteless wrapper. Â The meat is just like the tacos, soft and rather tasteless, while SA's is charred a bit and a perfect carne asada texture with actual meat flavor with a salty after taste. Â Then they actually put beans and rice inside the burrito...sinful and easy way to short you on meat. Â Lastly they don't even give you chips or offer them.
On a positive (which I always attempt to do), the horchata once again was a highlight. Â AND for dessert the frescas are all homemade and are REALLY a palate pleaser! Â I do not prefer cantaloupe and managed to drink half the cup. Â The watermelon looked good but I let the gf win this one...but she'll lose the war.
Overall if you were raised in a Hispanic area and love Mexican food...find a cheap flight to southern California on southwest and don't forget to use YELP!!!
Good tacos and variety of dishes. Â The carnitas were a bit well done for my liking but good. Â They have a great salsa bar, but the crappy movie theater chips didn't help me take advantage of them. Â
Bonus: Cheese fries topped by asado and green chile. Â Ouch. Â Also love the red and white color scheme, even down to the rocks outside.
Nice patio to chill on the nice day.
With $1 great tacos and a salsa bar, I can't possibly give less than 4 *s.
Love at first bite!
Now, I'm from Southern California. I KNOW my authentic Mexican tacos and I can be very picky about where I eat them from. However, my Mexican friends who moved to Denver about a year ago recommended this place and their judgement is impeccable!
I opted for two lenguas (tongue) and three asadas for dinner. I was also ecstatic to learn that they also had cantaloupe agua fresca! Wow, with the red hot sauce, it was a great after-snowmobiling dinner!
Stop 4 on the November 7th 2009 Taco Tour...
With a full belly I bit the bullet and got 2 tacos again. You place your order inside and get a ticket to take outside to where the meats are being cooked. The chorizo was so good! It's cooked in a link and the cook chopped off the end and diced it up and put it on a taco. I also had the tereso. I like the meat a lot better than the super greasy taco shell it was served in.
I'd still go back here.
Street tacos from this cool little spot for .99 each made the way they are supposed to be 2 mini corn white corn tortillas meat and pico! That's it and that's a damn good taco!
Gringos are welcome they treated my big corn fed ass like I was a celebrity, were more then gracious showed me what everything was at the salsa bar!
To me I would drop 2.98 on 3 of these taco's then get a meal from some corporate fast food joint! That's why I stop here routinely and get my taco fix!
Taco Mex on a weekend summer night can't be beat for atmosphere and they also make some pretty mean tacos. Try the pastor (of course), the longaniza and the suadero. For $0.99 you can't go wrong.
For the full scoop:

I live near this restaurant and I couldn't be happier. Â Good food at great prices. Â $1 tacos (small ones), a clean, honest appearance. Â This place is *always* busy, always friendly, and quite consistent.
So what's good? Â Everything so far: Chile Relleno, smothered burrito, the tacos, Ceviche, enchiladas, the Sopas, and the oysters were a little frozen, but still good. Â They also do $4 fruit cups (big ones) covered in lime juice and salt. Â Yum.
On the weekends, I sometimes forget about eating until it is too late and hunger is driving me crazy.  I was out running errands on Saturday, when the hunger pangs struck with a vengeance.  With nothing in mind, I decided to head east on Colfax until something caught my eye.  Suddenly on the right, smoke signals wafted into the blue sky, just behind a white sign that proclaimed...could that be?  99¢ tacos!?!? Â
Slamming a hard right, I pulled into Tacomex, a stand alone building along East Colfax that possibly could have been a fast food chain in a past life. Â Today it is so much more. Â Outside, a young man stood under some pop-up awnings, grilling an assortment of meat on one side, while tending to some pastor on the spit grill to his left. Â The aromas were comforting and inviting. Â Inside, I found a clean, crisp, and brightly decorated room, filled with live plants and colorful window paintings. Â
Counter service is the preferred mode here. Â While English is spoken, brushing up on your Spanish is always a good idea when ordering tacos. Â For those of you who are like me and lack fluency, all you need to know is this phase: Â "Quisiera {insert quantity - un(a), dos, tres, cuatro, cinco...} tacos de {insert desired meat}, por favor." Â Repeat if ordering more than one variety of taco. Â If eating in say "para aqui", if ordering to go say, "para llevar." Â Finish your interaction with a smiling gracias. Â You are now prepared to survive in any taqueria.
The tacos are on the small side, but they pack a mighty punch. Â I thought that the cabeza (cow's head) and the lengua (tongue) were pretty delicious, but they were not the stars of this place. Â Clearly, the standouts were the birria and the pastor. Â
Birria is a dish that I have seen in many traditional Mexican cookbooks, but rarely at Mexican restaurants. Â It is a stewed meat, made from beef, goat, lamb, or whatever is available (I'm pretty sure they use beef here). Â The meat is seasoned and marinated overnight with a chile paste and then slow cooked for several hours until the meat is tender and succulent. Â The result is a taco with tender, juicy meat bursting with flavor. Â
The pastor is possibly the best in Denver (a very competitive field) when it is being made fresh. Â Al pastor is pork cooked on a spit grill and then shaved, similar to the way gyros are prepared. Â Tacos al pastor translates as shepherd's tacos. Â The tender seasoned meat is then combined with pineapple before going into your tortilla, then your belly. Â When the outdoor cook is present, you order your food inside and then take your receipt to the cook, who will prepare your tacos al pastor on the spot. Â I highly recommend coming to this place when the outdoor grill is fired up because the al pastor is simply so much better at those times. Â
This place is relatively close to my house, so I am looking forward to plenty of future visits and hopefully a schedule of when the grill cook will be present.
