I had a wonderful time at Tate's! Â I was only in Winston-Salem for a few days, and this was the highlight of my trip.
My review is based solely on the cocktails. It is expensive, but you are paying for what you order, which is fancy, creative cocktails. I had two cocktails, The Kitchen Sink, and a strawberry, prossecco, vodka, balsamic one (which I am disappointed because I can't remember the name).
The strawberry drink was divine: muddled strawberries, balsamic syrup, prossecco, vodka, probably some other things, and garnished with a strawberry. I loved watching the bartender make it and using fresh ingredients. It was divine: strong enough that I knew I was drinking alcohol, but the fresh strawberry made it just fruity enough.
The Kitchen Sink was also amazing. More hints of strawberry, but with some gin, and garnished with green pepper, cucumber and strawberry. It made me feel healthy when I drank it!
The patio is small, but nice, and we enjoyed the warm evening. I wish I had tried the food. The music was good, the drinks were good, and I would definitely go back if I am ever back in Winston-Salem.
This place was totally my jam.
Expensive for Winston, but definitely fun and lively. The bar maintains an intimate atmosphere, with young bartenders in ties. My favorite drink here is the blackberry julep. It's piled high with blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries. Yes, it's very girly and oh so delicious! A must try.
Review Source:Tate's is awesome!! This place is a real bar. Real bartenders that know real drink recipes and actually care that you like their creation. We go about once a week and Heather and Steven are the best! They only use fresh fruit and bitters in their drinks along with top shelf liquor to make the best cocktail possible. The owner encourages the bartenders to create their own concoctions and only the best make it to the specialty menu. These are drinks you will only find here. If you are looking for a laid back spot with indoor and outdoor seating, friendly bartenders, and live music every now and then make sure to visit Tate's.
Review Source:While in town for the Wake Forest Reunion, I was tasked with picking places to meet up with my husband's old college pals. Thank God I found you Tates! You made me look Good--REALLY Good--because even the NYers who get the best of the bar/cocktail scene were thrilled with you. And your drinks were really crafty and creative, come to Philly, we need a bar like you. Nice mix of ages in here as well, definitely gets packed.
FYI-Recently voted one of the 100 best places to drink in the South by Imbibe magazine.
The craft cocktails are quite tasty and very creative. I have had a few I didn't like, but generally they are quite good. Don't bother with the food. They have small plates and bar snacks, but they are mediocre at best. This is not a place to eat, this is a place for a nice drink.
If you're there on a weekday I would definitely rate it higher - 4 stars, particularly if there is a jazz band playing. Once the place starts to get crowded, though, things start going downhill. I recently went on a Saturday night and people were packed in 3 deep at the bar. This becomes a problem with the craft cocktails - when each drink takes 5 minutes to make and the bar is slammed with people, it takes FOREVER to get anything, even a simple beer or glass of wine. That gets annoying very quickly.
Good drinks and a nice place to go on a slower night, but not my cup of tea on weekends.
I loved my visit to Tate's last weekend.
First, as others have mentioned, the crowd here rocks. There are dressed up gals out for a night on the town, casual guys in jeans and baseball caps who look like they came from a football game, older upper 30-somethings enjoying a fine beverage, and younger couples on dates sipping fancy beers. Coming from Richmond where the certain crowds go to certain places, it was really refreshing to visit a spot where it seemed like anyone was welcome and everyone was having a good time.
Next, my boyfriend commented that he absolutely loved the music selection. Rocking out to old-school Biggie with a fine cocktail in hand? Yes please.
Speaking of cocktails, hello awesome drink list! I got the blackbird julep, which featured chambord, citron vodka, lemon juice, simple syrup and "boozy berry compote." I loved that I was able to order this after 10 p.m. without the bartender giving me a dirty look for ordering something other than vodka-soda, cranberry, oj, etc. The drink itself was fabulous: refreshing and flavorful, but not too sweet or weak. I also was super pleased that "berry compote" meant a heaping helping of fresh strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, not just one or two rogue berries thrown into the mix. For an original cocktail concoction, I have to say this is probably one of my favorite cocktails ever, and I order off the fancy drink menu a lot.
The boyfriend got some sort of craft brew, because they also had a great beer selection. In all, I love this place and can't wait to return on a future Winston-Salem visit.
Tates started as a fantastic idea - craft cocktails in an upscale setting; however, after a few months it began to go downhill. The crowd tates now attracts is insufferable. If assholes could fly tates would be an airport. Additionally due to tates overwhelming popularity the craft half of craft cocktails has woefully gone away. You just can't make ten solid drinks in 5 minutes. The bar is enjoyable on monday or tuesday, but wednesday through saturday - STAY AWAY!
Review Source:Okay so I went here for an event and the drinks were free. Â
Here is my honest opinion of the place. Â This place is TINY; however, the bathrooms are clean (which for a girl is important), the service is a little slow but drinks were free so that was obvious and the people there though were actually SUPER DUPER nice. Â It was packed and people were waiting outside to get in and my bartenders still had smiles on their faces. Â (These bartenders didn't get tipped that well until the end so they had NO idea what they were getting.)
Unlike some other bars in this general area, this place has a young adult, "happening", generation x and y, type of vibe which is awesome, because it is exciting and it creates a fun energy I don't think I've seen in awhile. Â
They have a really good draft beer selection with not the "normal" beers you see on draft. Â They have a really good cab in the wine department and they have a chardonnay wasn't too bad either. (Hey, drinks were free...don't judge me...LOL!)
I would definitely come here again and suggest it to my friends coming into town.
I was visiting a friend and decided to meet up at this bar. Â This was my first time visiting WS and did not know what to expect obviously...
Everything is located on this 4th street and there are probably like total of 4 bars all together where people can hang out... I would have to say that it was packed on Saturday night with young crowd... ladies with their summer dresses and the guys with shorts and sandles??? What's up with that? Â I guess looks aren't that important here...
The drinks were reasonably priced and good portions... the bartenders work hard to ensure that you get your fill as quick as possible.. I felt welcomed... Â recommend it for drinks only.. no dance floor and no seats... truly a bar....
This is the happen place in W-S. When it gets packed on weekend nights it's like you are transported to a city where there is a social scene--which is pretty amazing.
Drinks are pricey (for the area, but totally on par with any larger city $7-10 mixed drinks and martinis), but delicious and well sized. They don't skimp on the the alcohol which is nice. I love the fun references in the drink names. Servers are excellent giving frank opinions on drinks and what is popular.
Small plates are tasty! I've also had Tate's catering which is drool-worthy.
All in all--coming from a life of big cities--Tate's is where I feel most at home. Â Make sure to check it out.
I am from winston and am kinda new  to the whole bar scene. My friend and I love LOVE LOVE Tate's. Everyone that works there is absolutely wonderful, the bartenders, the cocktail waitresses, the doorman, everyone. It has an awesome vibe and is a great place to go for drinks. They have small plates and mean drinks. I have heard people having to wait a while to get a drink, and honestly if your a regular ...you wont have a problem they definitely cater to their regular clientele. And, I will certainly be back!
Review Source:I'm a bit surprised that this place hasn't been reviewed yet, all the locals recommend it with a certain fervor and it's absolutely everything they make it to be.
It's the "cool" spot on the 4th street drag, and for a town like Winston-Salem it's certainly a trendy place that seems to have been plucked right out of cities like Los Angeles or New York.
It's not your snooty run-of-the-mill high end bar. Rather Tate's focuses on the lax atmosphere that Winston-Salem is naturally gifted with and plays upon it very well.
They offer a massive variety of alcoholic beverages that is sure to please even the most discriminating of tastes. The bartenders know what they're doing and will gladly suggest a drink if you're having a hard time picking something.
Tate's also has a sizable menu of food, but don't come here for a full dinner if you're starved. They make it very clear that the food is not a full meal, rather a sampling of appetizers, almost like a tapas restaurant would offer.
I opted for the jalapeno-spiced two-step meatballs (quantity: 3) and a pulled pork slider. I didn't realize that the slider was just that: one slider, and a side of Frito's (corn chips). The food is delicious, definitely not enough for an eater like myself, but absolutely flavorful and presented in a truly aesthetically pleasing way.
I'd recommend Tate's to anyone visiting Winston-Salem and looking for a place to have a drink, unwind, and lounge with a few friends. On Tuesdays they have a live jazz band for your listening pleasure.
Enjoy!
