Mico, Franco, Christian!
Good people, fabulous restaurant! Love the pizzas, charcuterie, drinks....but most of all...love the proprietors who have always (going back to University Ave days at Pasta?) made our family feel very, very special. Better yet, they seem to do this for everyone!
Continued success, good friends!

I'm reserving final judgment until I can come back and try a few more things from the menu -- this place has definite potential, and I'm thinking maybe we just ordered the wrong things. I stopped in for a late/light lunch with my mom after wandering the farmers market. We shared the burrata (good, but pretty hard to mess this up), fava beans & rapini (interesting but not my favorite), and cavatelli (good flavor but the pasta was cooked too soft). Service was excellent -- we asked to sit by the window in the bar area and the bartender took great care of us.
Review Source:So this place is excellent.
Went here with a group of friends for dinner, and we were seated out back in the patio area - which was nice and relaxed. Since there were 5 of us splitting dinner, I got to try quite a few things - none of them disappointed. Especially if you're there with a group, definitely get the antipasto dello chef - it was a selection of salami, veggies and the burrata mozzarella when we were there - but they give you the exact amount for the number of people at your table, it's beautifully arranged and it was delicious. The burrata is a must here.
We split the margherita, terrone, tricolore and pera pizzas for dinner - all were great, and I'm very happy to have awesome thin crust pizza in the area! The tricolore was perhaps my fav since it meant I got more burrata.... We also had the caramel gelato with olive oil for dessert which was fantastic. Service was great throughout, if maybe a bit too attentive. By the time we finished up our drinks and left, it was an hour after they 'closed' and the staff were still helping people out at the bar, chatting to customers. Very friendly staff, good service, great food and reasonably priced for Cal Ave.
Lunched here on a Sunday. Right off the bat, I have to say the service here is exceptional. The owner and our server were very welcoming and checked in on us often to make sure everything was to our liking. The kitchen had just fired up the pizza oven so our pizza was a little overtoasted. We mentioned it to our server and she immediately apologized and brought us back a new pizza. The owner came over to our table to make sure we were happy too.
As for the food, I think the ingredients are very fresh and good. I wasn't a huge fan of the pizza, but the eggplant parmesan, brussel sprouts appetizer, and berry panna cotta were pretty good. Overall, the service here was most impressive and made my experience 5 stars.
My girlfriend and I came to this place on a Saturday night for dinner. Â I was looking forward to trying this place out, but after eating here, I won't be coming back. Â
The food was mediocre, I've had better gourmet pizzas. Â However, the service was terrible. Â Our server had an attitude and wasn't welcoming in the least bit. Â Once she took our order, she didn't check back with us to see if we needed anything else for the whole meal. Â I had to wave her down for the check once we finished. Â
Our server's attitude was overly pretentious for a pizza joint. Â If I had to rate this place purely on service, I would rate it half a star.
California ave has some restaurants that I really like and I was happy to try a new entrant here since I had not come here in a while. Â
I was excited to go to Terrone after seeing the great reviews. However, both my date and I both left feeling disappointed after coming in with high expectations. IMHO, the staff needs a reset and some training on how to be welcoming and friendly to their customers. We entered the restaurant right behind a busboy who clearly saw us coming and did not hold the door open. I am not suggesting that he owes me that as a customer but I would do that for anyone in any situation. After we walked, we saw a few employees talking and it took a while for them to notice us and get us seated. Something was off with the service throughout, none of the employees seemed friendly. Our waitress was efficient and gave us recommendations but even her, it just felt like she was going through the motions. My date commented at the end of the night how it was odd that none of the employees smiled throughout the time there. Â
Now the food was better was than the service but not that great. The eggplant polpette was interesting. The truffle sauce was very good but did not like that the polpette was room temperature. I think it was pre-made and zapped since it came out so fast. The pera pizza with mozzarella, gorgonzola and pear was OK. The crust was too crispy and a little burnt. Â The caramel gelato with truffle oil and sea salt was the best part of the meal and was rich and creamy.
I am not coming back. Too many better options on California with much better service.
Disclaimer - My perception of the food might have been negatively influenced by the service.
Three stars sums this place up nicely. I had a chicken panini, and a first for me, it was served on flatbread which seeemed a little blasphemous for an Italian restaurant. Does it even count as a panini if its served on flatbread? I wasn't won over. The faulty vehicle of ingestion aside though the chicken could have used more seasoning. The side salad was decent although the inclusion of corn was not appreciated on my end. In summation, Terrone wont make your palate sing but it wont make it groan either.
Review Source:I really wanted to like this place. Beautifully designed interior. Attentive staff. Owned and run by Southern Italians (hence the name) who should know how to make a decent pie. I went on a Wednesday evening, and when I arrived most of the tables were empty. I sat at the bar and ordered a Margherita. After a few minutes, the waiter/bartender came back with my order. The portions were big but it was a little underwhelming. It wasn't bad, but for $14 I felt a little ripped off. Bocca Lupo in San Jose, tastes much better at almost half the price. They make a mean espresso though. I'll give them another shot, but I want to try Campo and Figo first...
Review Source:Everything looks so appetizing here. My YUM-ometer went through the roof! I had such a hard time choosing what to eat that I made my boyfriend take control and decide on everything we ate. Must come back!!!!!
Terrone - spicy sausage and mozzarella pizza. My boyfriend was seriously googly eyed over this pizza. Every bite he took I would hear him go "mMmm" or "the sausage on this pizza is amazing!" I think I have to agree with him - the sausage was delicious! Instead of using sausage chunks, they are thinly sliced and crispy! It almost reminded me of pepperoni, but obviously better!
Gnocchi - some sort of truffle sauce with parmesan. Really simple with a light flavor. I think it's a good accompaniment with another dish.
Carmel Gelato with Sea Salt and Olive Oil - I have always wanted to try this dessert! It doesn't sound like it would be a pleasant flavor but everything ties together really well. The sea salt balances out the sweetness and the olive oil makes the gelato creamy and smooth. The olive oil also adds kind of a nutty, earthy tone to the carmel. So good!
Vodka Smash - whoa...so strong and basically just vodka. After two sips I was already feeling it, no joke.
Next time we come back my bf promised that I would get to choose our dishes. I think it's only because I saw someone's Tricolore pizza and I was ready to attack their table and grab a slice. The burrata on that thing...get in my mouth. Now!
Poor to rude service, but good food overall.
The wait staff was okay, not great. His timing was inconsistent and we had to flag him down a few times, overall though nothing too far off the mark. The general manager, however, was a different story. The bulk of our complaint is here. We don't want to speculate too much, but we couldn't help but notice that the general manager visited every other table but ours -- and we were the only Asians in immediate view. The manager visited the table on one side of us and got quite chummy with the diners, speaking Italian. He also visited the table immediately to the other side of us as well. The GM also had no trouble flirting with a table of 2 girls, bringing them limoncello and having some with them.
Whatever the reason, we were duly ignored. It wouldn't have been so bad if the GM didn't visit every table adjacent to us except for ours.
The food: We visited the restaurant for the second time last Friday. The first time was just after their opening so it was really busy, festive but busy, and they still had a few kinks to work out. This time, the food was better and it was less crowded.
We had a lovely Father's Day lunch here today. Everything: food, service, comfort level of outdoor seating, was excellent. I love the fact that the Italian owner greets you and speaks Italian to the employees. The only thing I might detract half a star for is the selection of music: it was mainly rap. How 'bout some Italian opera, or some authentic Italian pop songs? Italy is not exactly lacking in the way of good music.
My husband and I have fond memories of our meals in this same space when it was Bistro Elan, and are delighted to know we can now enjoy even more great food here!
Food: 4
Decor: 3
Service: 3
Came here with a party of 3 for lunch.
1. Cavatelli, 17.00
Homemade pasta, beef stew, carrots, parmigiano, herbs, tomato
~Pretty good. Definitely tasted fresh and homemade.
2. Lemon Panna Cotta with Berries 8.00
~Okay. Panna cotta was good, but I wish the berries had less syrup.
3. Vanilla Gelato affogato al Caffe 8.00
~Pretty good. Vanilla gelato complemented the affogato espresso perfectly.
4. Caramel Gelato with Sea Salt and Olive Oil 8.00
~Really good. Probably the best dessert of the three. Perfect mix of salty and sweet.
Service was okay, although we had to flag our server down a couple times.
All the food is here is great. It helps that the people who work there are actually Italian. The entire staff is super friendly and very accommodating.
One time they sat us too quickly before someone else and gave us free wine for the inconvenience. Talk about service!!!
Every dish I tried was great, from the pizzas to the appetizers to the entrees. Plus, it's great for lunch and dinner!
Most authentically Italian pizza I've had since visiting Italy. And reasonably priced! Minus one star for slow service during weekday lunch (not so work-schedule friendly, after all), but they comped an order as a result and without us asking, which was a nice gesture. I'll be back...but probably for dinner instead.
Review Source:3.5 stars for decent food and great cocktails.
We thought the spicy sausage pizza was pretty good and the blue cheese and pear pizza was fantastic. Our major complaint was that the pizzas were both quite doughy and undercooked- not the nice crispy crust you'd expect from thin napoletana style pizzas. We also had a beet salad which was okay.
I was here for a Saturday night dinner with a few friends. The ambience is quite lively. They have tables inside as well as outdoor tables in the back of the restaurant. On a nice summer evening, its quite pleasant sitting outside.
Make no mistake about the food at this place - this is authentic Italian food. The wine selection was great. The food was fantastic. I tried their vegetarian pizza, the T-bone steak and a beef broth pasta - all of which were really good. It is a bit on the expensive side, but its worth what you pay for.
All in all, its a nice place to go eat with your friends. Its also a nice place to take your girlfriend or boyfriend out for a meal and some wine. I'm impressed.
Food was better than service. Â Great pizza. Â With average/good service would have been 4 stars...
Service needs work. Â Very rushed, entree out before appetizer, table next to us had entrees served while they were still on salads. Â Check came to table while we were still eating dessert (that was a first). If we hadn't taken some time to enjoy the coffee, he would have had us in/out in 35 min... Â Too bad since the food is good...
This was one of the biggest let downs as of yet. Â I'm not sure what's with all the hype. Â Our food was barely edible and we had basically no service.
We ordered the calamari which tasted like a reheated left over dish (sorry but it really was that bad). Â And we also ordered the prosciutto panini which was more like a quesadilla made with pizza dough instead of tortillas. Â There was a once slice layer of prosciutto and unevenly spaced very salty cheese. It was very very salty.
Also the service was really poor. We had to flag our waitress down for everything. Â And when other tables with a different waiter were getting bread and water, we were still waiting and waiting to flag our very distracted waitress down. Â We really don't require much and generally like to be left alone at our meals, but there was very minimal service. We will not be returning.
We stopped in for lunch the other day as I had been craving the pear pizza (though I prefer versions that drizzle a little honey on there too with a little chili oil). Wasn't exactly what else to order. My friend suggested the calamari, but that's too ordinary, so I suggested the eggplant poplettes. I won. Made my friend happy as it was the highlight of the meal and a definite order again next time. Well worth it even at two of them for ten bucks. The truffle sauce was a perfect compliment to it. Soooooo good!!!
The Pera also delivered. Excellent. It's been my favorite pizza for a long time and even though I try to stay away from pizza (not working the last few weeks lol), it was just a craving that had to be satisfied. Was happy they didn't overdo it with the gorgonzola, because it would have offset the balance and flavor of the pie. Hate pizzas with tons of toppings, so loved everything about this one.
The space is just lovely too. Nice, sleek interior. Definitely one of the best options on California Street. Â Will I be back? Of course, there's the rest of the menu to go through!
I have been wanting to dine here forever and a day! Came here for lunch as a belated bday meal for moi. Pizza being this gal's favorite food, I was in for a treat.
It can be tricky to find parking, but there's a good amount behind the restaurant. Very modern inside, and we sat next to the window. Was drooling at everyone's food, and I had debated between the quattro and the pera. I asked the waiter, and he recommended the pera. Cheese and bread, along with some sweet pears will make me happy with the sweet and salty.
A water bottle is placed on every table, but they come by and refill your cups often. Coworker and friend started off with salads. These salads are huge, can definitley be shared between two people. The beet salad was gorgeous. Red and yellow (didn't know they came in yellow) adorned on the edge of the plate, with plenty of goat cheese on top of the greens. Tried a beet and it was delicious! I also asked for some bread, even though I would be eating plenty of it soon, and it was so tasty. Reminded me of a crossiant because it was so flaky.
Our pizzas arrived, and one can easily be shared as well, but can also easily be eaten by one. My coworker ordered one that was similar to mine. Marinara, mozzerrella, gorgonzola, and speck, which looks very much like proscuitto. Mine did not have speck or marinara, but perfectly cooked pears. It was absolutely yummy. I also added crushed red pepper to have the salty, sweet, and spicy party going on in my mouth. The pizza bread is so thin, you eat it guilt free. The fresh mozzerrella was as good as can be. I wasn't able to finish it all, although tempted as I knew the bread wouldn't have the same tasty factor as later. Also, the crust is amazing. Perfectly chewy and the right thickness.
I didn't finish my pizza because I was saving room for dessert. What everyone and my coworker had raved about. The caramel gelato with sea salt and olive oil. But alas, they were all out of the gelato!!! How could this be? Minus the one star that they did not have this favorite dessert.
Overall, service was fantastic, food was fabulous, but do note, the prices are a bit steeper. My pizza was $16 at lunchtime. However, quality comes at a cost, and this was worth it!
Mehh. I really wanna write something stellar about this place but I just can't.
The vibe is nice: fun and hip and cozy at the same time. good job.
The drinks are good: i.e. bartender was a cutie and you can't really mess up a basic gin cocktail.
The food: ruh-roh.
Appetizer was a PAINFULLY small cheese platter of three varieties of 1 ounce cheese pieces. I literally find more cheese jammed in the back of my freezer than what was on that waif of a starter. This was whack.
The pear & gorgonzola pizza was delish cuz it was...straight up 2 toppings. BUT even at that, the crust was some weird flimsy consistency and I was not impressed.
I ate at Terrone again this past weekend and everything was superb... again!
This time I had a sizable circle of friends with me and sharing was encouraged! Â We started with two orders of the Eggplant Polpettes as these are pure goodness drenched in creamy truffle sauce and an order of the Farro & Calamari. Â I have had both in the past and they were still phenomenal.
For entrees we had a variety, including: Â Eggplant Parmesan, Pappardelle Special, Shrimp & Risotto Special, Pera Pizza and Terrone Pizza. Â This is the way to eat here as every dish was spectacular. Â I enjoyed the Eggplant Parmesan and quickly realized that I must love eggplant as these are two of my favorite dishes from the menu.
Dessert consisted of Caramel Gelato with Sea Salt and Olive Oil & Vanilla Gelato. Â I have a simple palette and preferred the Vanilla Gelato, but the Caramel Gelato received rave reviews.
Make reservations, or prepare to wait.. Every bite is worth it!.
My friends and I came here for one of my friend's birthday dinner. Â We made reservations for 7:45, and got seated at 8:45. Â One of my friends and I ended up actually going to subways across the street to fend off the hunger.
Food-wise, the pizza's were bland as some other reviews mentioned. Â The pizzas themselves taste like thin pita bread with tomato sauce. Â It doesn't really matter what you order here because all the pizzas taste pretty much the same. Â Like bread and tomato sauce.
We ordered 8 pizzas and the majority of them tasted salty. Â The drinks are okay. Â If we weren't to look at the price of the food, this place might be okay. Â However, considering the price you will be spending will be at least $15 per person, there are just better choices out there.
I wouldn't say I would come here again. Â Service was good though (besides the wait.)
My, my, my... I think I'm in lust. In lust with those Eggplant Polpette! Never had it so good in my life. In fact, never had anything like it until Terrone!
Love the style of this place. It's simple, clean and crisp. Small space, with a big open patio out back with black on white décor. Full bar, concise waiters, ultimate smoothness.
Lunch time with a friend-
~Arugula Salad- fava beans, shaved pecorino sardo, lemon dressing. Glistening & refreshing!
~Eggplant Polpette- Taleggio, truffle sauce, crostini. You already know how I feel about those.
Would I do it again? Oh yeah! Absolutely. I shall return very soon!
I went as a part of a large group, and the only negative was the fact that we were stuck outside when it was windy. They have outdoor heaters, but the wind kind of made them useless.
We had pizza, pasta, and several appetizers and they were all fantastic - I cannot believe that the group organizer almost made us go to buca di peppo instead
Also, our waitress was in a less than pleasant mood. Maybe since we were a large group, she knew that she would get her 18% and didn't have to be nice or anything...
My husband and I came here on a friday night around 6:30 and luckily didn't have to wait long for a table. There was a small table in the bar area which was fine though just a little on the loud side.
They don't do half and half so we ordered 2. We got the terrone and the pera. The terrone came with a tomato sauce, mozzarella and spicy sausage. The crust was great - really, really thin, chewy in the middle with crispy edges. The mozzarella was the fresh buffalo kind which I love and the sausage was flavorful. The sauce however, was a little watery and too sour. The ratio of toppings to crust was also a bit low. I liked the pera a lot more. It came with the same kind of mozarella, gorgonzola, and pears. The gorgonzola was not overpowering and everything went really well together. Still could have used more toppings though, there were a couple slices that had no pears at all.
For dessert we had the caramel gelato with olive oil and sea salt. The gelato was delicious; very rich and creamy. I wished it had just a little more olive oil and salt, but I think I like more than the average person.
Overall decent though a little expensive for what it is. I'd go again for the pera and the gelato. The decor is nice and you can call ahead for reservations so it would be a good place for a group dinner. The staff was very friendly and attentive.
A friend told us about Terrone, so we had to come check it out. Â We called for reservations for 2pm on a Saturday, and we were quickly seated when we arrived.
We asked the waitress what was on the antipasto platter and she said a few cheeses and meats, so we ordered that, along with the burrata cheese. Turns out the antipasto platter came with burrata as well. Â Luckily they let us return the cheese, but it would have been better if the waitress knew what was on the menu a bit more, or if they listed out what was on the platter so you can plan accordingly.
The burrata was amazing. Â It tastes fresh, like they make it there in the back. Â The bread for the bruschetta was really hard and stale. Â We asked for new toasted bread and it was way better. Â
The pizza was great. Â Highly addictive crust, and the salted olive oil gelato is a MUST. Â Who knew olive oil over ice cream would be so good?
Overall, a great restaurant with a few kinks to work out. Â We'll be back and will update our review. Â Hopefully they'll have it running perfectly in a few months.
Let me start by saying this is quite a little gem of an establishment. I was already excited to sample their food after reading the many positive reviews on yelp.
Walked in to find Janet & Adam already enjoying tasty looking cocktails. We were seated promptly in the patio. At first it was a bit breezy but the patio heaters helped chase away the chills. The owner assured us that around 7:30 the wind would still and it'd be perfect and he was right! He seemed to know every detail of his establishment, very impressive!
Glen joined us soon after and brought with him a very good bottle of cabernet, corkage was $15, which is very reasonable. We ordered the Pizza Terrone ( sauce, mozzarella, sausage ) as an appetizer to share. I have to say, I am a huge fan of Neapolitan pizza. The thin crust has to be crispy without falling apart in the middle. The pizza here is delicious.
We also ordered their special small plate of mussels and clams in a white wine broth. The clams were good but the mussels were a bit off putting. Bitter is a good description. So I would pass on this next time.
I ordered the Scialatielli (Homemade pasta, funghi porcini, parmigiano, rosemery, olive oil) Wow fresh pasta is so much better then the dried re hydrated variety. It was firm yet the bite was toothy. The mushroom sauce was amazing. After giving everyone their courtesy taste..I inhaled the rest. I would order this again and again!
Hubs ordered the Cavatelli (Homemade pasta, beef stew, carrots, parmigiano, herbs, tomato) This was also good. I make a similar sauce though at home that rivals this one but where they beat me is the fresh pasta. Do I want to learn how to make pasta or should I just find somewhere that sells fresh pasta. I will opt for the latter. But I know I would order this dish again too!
For dessert, I ordered the torta with berries. Nice balance of sweetness with the berry compote adding a nice contrast. The crust was thin and the texture of the filling smooth and rich. Nice way to end a fabulous meal.
Service was excellent! Our server was super sweet and had very good recommendations. The owners stopped by our table throughout the night to also check on us. That really shows how much they care about their customers and that alone will earn  them an extra star. In Terrone's case though, they earned every one of them.
5 stars
Fantastic restaurant! Wonderful atmosphere, delicious food, warm people.
This is the msot authentic Italian place in Palo Alto AND it is lots of fun! I'll be coming back again and again for pizza, coffee, drinks, appetizers, and, pasta.
It's a truly fun crowd. Just being there puts me in a good mood.
Maico is always amazing and Irina, who seated us, is beautiful and a sweetheart. Janelle, our waitress, was caring and nice
The patio is perfect for a sunny afternoon. This is also a great place to go between lunch and dinner because it doesn't close
Advice: Make a reservation!
Grazie, Terrone!
I am italian and in particular I am from Napoli where the pizza has been invented and I have to say that Terrone Ristorante made me feel like home.
Since I am in the US this is the first time I could taste the real italian flavor.
On top of all the atmosphere is very friendly and warm.
