Mmm...visited twice after WSCR's Jason Goff mentioned it on air.

Located just steps from the Howard El stop with my preference to go during the day.

I always order the Oxtail (the Pepper sauce is excellent with that slow building heat!) with Rice, Potato Salad and Plaintains and dine in while listening to the music and drinking a Pineapple Soda.  Gotta try more on there.

Real nice there, asked the girl about clubs and she gave me a tip.  Cool.

An extra star for being unique. I like the fried conch and the portions are a great bang for your buck.

Went here for a lunch on a Sunday. You feel transported to the Caribbean once you enter with the turquoise walls and blaring Belizian radio station!  But it also feels like family, real home cooking and authentic!

I ordered the small chicken dinner (very generous portion size indeed!), fry bread to share with friends and a ginger beer. Chicken dinner with rice & beans was delicious and filling. Fry bread was a nice way to start out the meal. Also tried the coconut tart & coconut empanada looking thing - both tasty ways to end the meal.

I will have to say the radio was a little loud, but they turned it down when we requested. Also, wrapping up our bill took a little while not sure why.

Cute little place, good food, rustic ambiance, but that's what gives it character!  I will definitely be back...I've heard breakfast is good here too!

I went here with a coworker, whose mom is from Belize.  She is not from Chicago, but somehow it seems like all Belizeans know eachother.  The old guy that hangs out there knew her grandpa.  Anyways...he's a bit strange & at first seems unfriendly, but he's actually nice.

I always get the chicken dinner which could feed 3 people.  The fried plantains & rice are so freaking good & greasy.  I bet it would be good hangover food.  Potato salad's good too.  Not a fan of the pop they had there...it had like 45 grams of sugar.

I love this neighborhood...its just soooo far!! Great cheap belizean food. The stew chicken is a must!!! I've searched for authentic stew chicken in chicago and this is definitely the place to go. While you are at it stop at the Jamaican pastry shop and pick up a few items... you wont regret it!

This was my first time experiencing Belizean food. I went to Tickie's for dinner with some family who hosted friends from Belize and brought them to Chicago for a visit. So delicious!

In all truthfulness, the site of this humble restaurant does not boast a most appetizing surrounding or location, but it doesn't matter. The oxtail is phenomenal, and so are all the other treats: fried plantains, potato salad, ginger beer, and coconut dessert (which I enjoyed with coffee the next morning because I was so full). This is a great choice if you are looking for a change of pace. I'd quickly recommend it to lovers of Indian and/or Cuban. Belizean dishes surely reflect their geography: a sort of hybrid-cuisine of foods from that Central American region, operating with what I learned is a relatively low variety of produce. You'd never know from the results, though. I found everything to be surprisingly familiar and not-so-surprisingly yummy.

Note: Portion sizes are generous, so don't over-order on entrées. Save room for some of their side dishes and desserts.

This place is incredible for the price.  Amazing ox-tail, fried plantain, chicken... it's all great.

Don't be put off by the location or the small and sparely decorated storefront - the food is incredible.

One of the best hot sauces I've ever had - a vinegary concoction with habanero pepper, makes everything taste amazing.

If you are at the Howard redline stop and are hungry, you owe it to yourself to stop in.

I was a little skeptical of this place when we saw it pop up as an option on urban spoon, and even when we stepped into the tiny storefront, but I was won over by the outstanding meal. It seems like most of the clientele do takeout, but we opted to eat at the restaurant. What the place lacks in ambiance, it makes up for in satisfaction. Hubby had the small beef dinner and I had the small chicken dinner. The meat was so tender it fell off the chicken bone and the sauce made me wish I could try everything on the menu. The rice and beans were deliciously coated with some of the sauce that was used on the meat and the potato salad, no kidding, was the best of my life. Who would have thought? Another high light was the conch (they spell it counch) fritter, which was wonderfully  spicy and perfectly crispy. I'm craving another one already. We'll be back, though probably for takeout this go round.

Tickie is a wonderful man, and our group of 12 enjoyed our meal. They stayed open for us past 8pm so that we could have a relaxed meal. The food was very tasty and large portions are indeed large. You can eat well on the "small" portions. I had the stewed beans with chicken and Caribbean spice was just the right amount of heat. I added a little Belizean habanero sauce for fun. The dinner portion sides are all about the starch with rice, beans and potato salad. Tickie's does a big carry out business.
Tickie's is not much to look at inside the restaurant. The tv was on, and a bit too loud. Service, while pleasant and friendly, was sparse. They don't bring water to the table. We brought wine, but they did not have a corkscrew.
All together, go for the food and enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

I passed this place every day on the purple line but never thought to go in until I had training at the Howard Area Community Center across the street. The food is a cross between Caribbean flavors and more traditional Latin American cuisine (tamales, burritos, etc). I had the oxtail with red beans and rice (I wanted to try something new, but they also have chicken, pork, and vegetarian options). The rice was spicy and cooked just right, and the oxtail was pretty good. You can get a half portion of most dishes for 5.95, and it's still plenty of food. The owner was very nice and attentive. This is a great place for cheap and delicious food.

I had food from Tickies at "Belize Day in the Park 2006" so I've never actually been to the restaurant, but the food they had was a wide variety of Belizean food found throughout Belize and it was quite delicious.  I imagine it may even be better freshly made in a restaurant than at a park event.  I can't wait to get some of their food again.
