I was in great need of a tasty snack, so I decided to swing by Tomo. Unable to decide on which roll to order, I asked the young man at the counter which was his favorite. He told me about a special roll with spicy crab and spicy tuna, said something that was incomprehensible amidst the din of the food court, and finished with, "so it has a kind of bbq flavor".
I was skeptical, because I've really gotten burned on some crappy special rolls lately, but I decided to go for it.
I sat down in the food court and waited. The roll seemed complicated to put together. Then, I saw the sushi chef take the whole roll and wrap it loosely in foil, then twist the ends to form a pouch. Then I saw him pour some sort of liquid all over the plate underneath the roll.
Then they set the whole thing on fire!!!
OK, call me easily amused but... FIRE!
And the best part? There was some sort of banana leaf or similar underneath the roll that, when charred by the flames, gave the roll this incredible smoky, delicious flavor. It was one of the best special rolls I ever tasted. The fire, therefore, was not just a gimmick but really added to the flavor profile of the roll. And on top of this, it was $12 and *easily* large enough for a whole meal.
I love this place. I feel like I can't give it five stars because of the total lack of atmosphere, which is not really its fault, but still. However, if I was rating just the taste of the sushi alone, I would give it five stars.
I've been to this place for a few years , and their sushi is amazing ! Even though the names were pretty weird and funny , it's still as good as it looks .They also have a bar where you can sit and watch them make their masterpiece and eat at the bar.
Personally , I was a little indecisive because I didn't know what kind of roll to get and I am a very picky kind of person  . But my favorite roll has to be the shrimp tempura roll. it contains fried shrimp , avocado , and cucumbers topped with the special tangy sauce. This happens to be my favorite roll because I am a seafood lover and it was well worth of my money . But if you are allergic to shellfish , my advice is not to get it . But there are other kinds of rolls with or without shellfish such as salmon , tuna etc. . Also , there are rice & soup dishes .
Most soup dishes contain seafood tempura & noodles . And  most rice dishes contain seafood , meat , vegetables , and/or sushi on the side. Tomo sushi happens to be one of my favorite places to have sushi as lunch or dinner with a group of friends .
I've lived in this area for 40+ years and became a lover of sushi about 10 years ago. Â I cannot believe this place was right under my nose the whole time and I didnt even know it. Â Â This place is simply awesome. Â The fish is fresh fresh fresh.... everytime we go (about once a week now). Â The presentation is phenominal. Â The selection is endless. Â The prices are unbelieveable (compared to the prices of Margaret Kuo, Hikaru, etc) Â The service is friendly and quick. Â The atmosphere is authentic. Â
If you like sushi and live within 15-20 minutes what is taking you so long?
The fish is always fresh, the owner makes and decorates the rolls herself, she puts care and pride in what she does.
It's not worth going to a restaurant to spend more for service and get less quality when you can go get your sushi fix here. The fried rolls are great, the spicy stuff is spicy enough . Great miso soup and seaweed salad. Tempura is awesome. Portions are big enough and the price is fair.
I go there a lot and it's nice that she remembers what I like!
I was at H Mart this week for dinner and decided to get sushi! I ordered seaweed salad, spider roll, and darby roll. I have to say the reason why I couldn't give them 5 stars is because their seaweed salad came in a small sauce cup and it tastes dry:( Â But their Spider Roll and Darby Roll are the BOMB! I have never taste anything like it. Tell you what, I would definitely be back next week to get those again!
Review Source:As I was walking through the jungles of Upper Darby, I walked into Upper Darby's Hmart. First I was scared, but since I was starving in the Jungle, I just had to try them out. HOW DELICIOUS! I come here literally every other day with my wife. The food is superb, but most importantly the people seem like they come from Heaven. They are so sweet and welcoming. :)
Review Source:Might be one of the best kept secrets in Delco.
The sushi is consistently good, and their specialty rolls are consistently 2-3 dollars cheaper than most places I go to. Â I just brought my wife here, and now she is hooked. Â
The Spicy California Roll may not be "real sushi" to many people, but damn it tastes good! Â And the wife highly enjoyed a huge bowl of spicy chicken noodles. Â Well, she enjoyed half of it. Â A doggie bag was required. Â Not a bad thing at all. Â
Getting a roll of sushi here combined with another dish from another place in the food court satisfies my variety jones as well.
Perhaps not the best sushi I've ever had, but for the price, its a great option! You could go to many "good" sushi joints and pay 2-3 times what you pay at Tomo. But the budget price, doesn't mean you get inferior sushi. It was very fresh and the rolls and combination plates were presented beautifully. Great attention to detail!
Review Source:I've been to Tomo several times and went after my doctor appointment before heading home and to H Mart for shopping. I am never disappointed. The Asian food court is above H Mart on the 2nd floor. You can choose Korean, Korean/Chinese,Japanese, Japanese/Korean.
I was in the mood for fresh food and Tomo called my name. I got the #26 Sushi box, which has 9 pieces Sashimi, 3 pieces sushi (Salmon, Tuna and Red Snapper), 3 pieces Gyoza Dumpling, seaweed salad, Green Salad , California Roll and Miso soup all for only $8.95. Seating is limited at the sushi bar, but since it is in the food court, there are lots of tables for all patrons.
The sushi is fresh and flavorful. The menu is huge - they have your basic sushi rolls(California Roll, Tuna Roll, etc) and fancier ones (like Dragon roll, Rainbow roll), and sushi/sashimi and Japanese teriyaki, katsu and other promient Japanese dishes.
You get alot of quality food for the price. It is also very clean establishment.
I LOVE THIS PLACE.
I have been a loyal customer for years and lunches/dinners at Tomo have always been a success! Go up the escalators as soon as you walk into the H-Mart grocery store and a magical food court awaits you. Really reasonably priced sushi for really fresh and quality ingredients. Seriously. $10 for sushi/sashimi bento that really gets you full? CRAZY. Seating at the sushi bar is very limited but you can sit anywhere in the food court. The attention to detail the chefs put into making the sushi is incredible. I am mesmerized by them every time I go! The okonomiyaki is delicious (they don't always have it), and the specialty rolls are great. Who doesn't love a volcano roll?
PS: Don't forget to pick up some bubble tea from the fantastic bakery next door! Lavender and Jasmine are my favorites!
If you like sushi Tomo is one of Philly/Delcos best kept secrets. On the second floor of the H-Mart at 69th street you'll never find it if you don't know where to look, but please go hunting! I've been to so many sushi joints in Philly and the surrounding area that I've lost track of them all classy establishments and lunch boxes, none can compare to the amazing delight that is Tomo. Â
Their sushi and sashimi is fresh and flavorful. they cover all the basics and plenty of the fancier rolls. All delicious! Their tempura is also quite a treat. I probably should try some of their other dishes at some point but I never seem to make it past the sushi!
Of you eat there everything is beautifully presented on ceramic and don't be surprised if your order is accompanist by a complementary bowl of miso soup and a salad with ginger dressing. The people at the counter are super nice. Â Oh did I mention how cheap this place is? Awesome if you're on a budget, and there are free water dispensers all over the food court if you're really scrimping for that perfect sushi meal.
Tomo is located on the second floor of H Mart in Upper Darby. On the second floor is an assortment of Korean shops, but there is also a food court, which is where Tomo is. Being in an Asian mart, I could only expect great things from Tomo in regards to its seafood, and I wasn't disappointed. For about five dollars, I got a lovely presentation of a spicy tuna roll, ginger & wasabi and all. In addition to this roll, they gave me a bowl of miso soup, for nothing extra! The sushi was delicious and fresh, and it was quite inexpensive considering I got soup as well. I tipped them for their generosity, and the ladies behind the counter are great :). If you're reading this review and wondering where it is, it is in the H Mart, up the escalators and on the second floor, towards the left in the food court area. Delicious! I understand the H Mart's entry on Yelp already has a lot of reviews, but I think each individual business deserves its own entry. That's why I made this one!
