This is my number 1 place for oysters and their beer battered fish and chips. Their shoestring fries are so good with the fish! They are both must haves with a bloody mary to drink. The outdoor seating in the Summer months is always great for people watching while eating your dinner.

Fat people seating friendly:Yes, though try to avoid being seated at the high tops in the back of the bar area if you won't want to lose circulation in your feet.

We love Tom's. Food is dependable, beer selection solid, service is better than most and they have a frequent patron program that rewards us. All good.

I've visited Michigan a few times now, and every time I come to the Royal Oak area I pass by Tom's. The strategic placement of people on the patio and the wafting aroma of delicious fried seafood always made me wish I were a patron. This past weekend, that wish was fulfilled. We sat on the inside and people-watched. There are many beautiful people roaming the streets, and we shall stalk and creep accordingly.

Our waiter was very friendly, flirtatious even. I like ciders over beers, and he recommended a pear cider that was much better than the Woodchuck I usually get (it tasted more like juice. What can I say? I'm a girl and I like girl drinks.) He also recommended the fish tacos, which did not disappoint. They were breaded and fried, and drizzled with tartar sauce, with a side of buttered summer squash. My friend and I got the smaller portion, and each taco was still large enough to be a filling meal.

Good meal and a good view :) I'll be backkkkkk.

Our waitress was great, hence the 3 stars. The abrupt, curt hostess, not so much. I need to be fair and admit I compare all seafood experiences to charleston, Nantucket, Alaska... Places that KNOW seafood (and where i have nommed my way through seafood) Unfortunately I cannot add Tom to my list. We had the oyster Rockefeller .. Meh small oyster but lots of filler. Salty/ peppery clam chowder, served Luke-warm-, and then the oyster pro' boy. What a horrible disappointment. Po'boys are a southern thang...and being a southern guuurl, I know my way around a po'boy. The oysters (all four of them) were tiny and breaded with? Which left a mushy flavorless experience. I could close the 5 in bun ( can't close a southern po'boy) and the only thing out of the sandwich was the huge globs / smear of mayo dressing and the huge hunk of tomato. The 2 tbsp. of coleslaw was bland.. There were some shoestring fries. $12 of hmmm. Then the WHOA.. $6 for a summer shandy on draft!!! On draft!!! On draft!!! I didn't order a kegger.. Perhaps I spend too much time in dive end bars- that a $6 sticker price on a draft is too much to accept. Lol

Pretty good seafood and drinks. Lively atmosphere on a weekend night.

I wanted to like this place but every time I tried something new it just wast good. The seafood chowder is made with Albacore tuna (same junk you get in a can!) so that was gross. Everything else was mediocre at best and not worth the money. They do rave about their Spanish coffee which is worth coming back for but I would rather go anywhere else for a drink.

We went on a very busy day/evening (May 18th) and the staff handled our loud, silly party with ease. THANKS so much!!

I go to Tom's 2-3 times a month and as a restaurant it has its quirks.

I don't like it when they make people wait in the front for tables because the other section is closed. Just leave it open. It's better than having people wait uncomfortably in front or worse yet, leave.

The menu is hit or miss, but there are certain things they do well.

The oysters and sandwiches are all good, as is the cedar plank salmon and shandy battered fish and chips.

The crab cakes and the baja fish tacos are EXCELLENT.

As a bar, they have a great beer selection and delicious Spanish coffees, a la Frank.

My wife and I went here for lunch about an hour after they opened on a monday. We were the first customers of the day which worried me but we had a great time.

We sat at the bar, the bartender was very helpful and suggested what oysters to go with. They were fresh as possible and not gritty.

Next we ordered the shrimp po boy to split. The shrimp were 10/12's and cooked to perfection. The po boy overall was okay, I've had better.

Great beer selection! About 12 drafts and all local/MI beers!

I started with Tom's at the first restaurant on Mack. I became hooked on the fresh supply of oysters and the ability to order from various oyster beds to compare flavors of the sea. Unfortunately, the days of fresh oysters seem to have passed with the sale from Tom the original owner to the current owners. The decorations remain the same but not the options. That said, I heartily recommend their fish tacos. They come two to a lunch plate or three to a dinner plate. The fish is breaded and served on soft flour tacos with a very zippy sauce. It is a small portion so if you are a big eater or a hungry person get something else.
Although I mourn the loss of fresh oysters this has become my destination for fish tacos locally.
Also, this is more of a bar place than a restaurant. There is no cappuccino-the waiter offered to mix chocolate with coffee to appease me (?!!) and when considering tea he educated me that they only had one type of tea bag. The bar looks well stocked and I cannot comment on their wine selection.
so if you want a drink, this is your place!

This was our first visit to Tom's, after a matinee at Stagecrafters. There were a few good points, but they were outweighed by the not-so-good.

We were seated promptly, but the service was really slow. The one good thing our server did was to bring me a sample of one craft beer I was considering. It was very bitter to me (Bell's Smitten), so I ended up with Brik Red. I agree with others that the prices here for the craft brews are on the high side, though the selection is impressive.

Now for the unimpressive things. First off, we ordered the cold sampler of smoked fish. The menu says it is a sampler of smoked fish, and says nothing about pates. There were two mounds of pate, salmon and bluegill. They were tasty, but there was too much of that (with too few crackers) and not much fish. The server said they were out of the whitefish sausage, which was one of the main reasons we ordered it. Instead of increasing the serving size of the other smoked fish, I think they may have given us more pate: too much, in fact.

The specials board included a whitefish with sundried tomatoes and parmesan that the server said was really good. My husband was swayed by her suggestion and ordered it, only to be told afterwards that the place was out of whitefish. If you don't have it, why is it on the "SPECIALS" board??

My lake perch was very greasy and the individual pieces were tiny. There was too much breading for the little size of the pieces. The total serving was small, given the price. My spouse's cedar planked salmon was tasty, but the portion wasn't very generous for the price, either. Vegetable on the side was a small serving of greasy zucchini and potatoes.

Service was very slow. We sat around after ordering our appetizer for a long time, waiting for the server to take our entree order. After we finished, it took a long time to get the bill presented, and then to get it returned.

While not horrid, it was not worth the $80+ tab. We aren't likely to come back
soon.

Visited here for a weekday dinner. The place was crowded so we were hopeful it was a good place. Bad assumption. The waitress brought out our appetizer and my husband's meal at the same time. When we asked about my plate, she lied and said that she just couldn't cary it and she would be right back with it. Right back was 15 mins later. The calamari was cold and there were about 10 pieces on a plate. The rest of the food was ok, but my husband had eaten his meal before mine came out. Considering the prices, there are better places to eat in the area.

We've been here three times now and two times we had no wait and excellent service. the last time we waited about 20 minutes for a table for 5. Music was a bit loud at dinner which was annoying but otherwise it was normal bar/restaurant noise. The chowders and chili are delish and the crabcakes are amazing. The bread pudding was so scrumptious I was glad I got my own and didn't have to share.

Now I will say that this restaurant is not family friendly for the most part. they do not have a kids menu. the wait staff will tell you what items are considered kids meal items. we decided to order a grilled cheese sandwich for our son and were charged 8.99 for the sandwich and potato chips but the chicken strips with french fries were 5.99. and the kids drinks were 2.50 each. this doesn't make us want to come back with our children at all.

First and probably the last time we eat here.
We were seated promptly with our reservation time. Server was very nice and did his job well (I think).

The food was the real disappointment here. The spinach dip was very watery and runny. I am not sure if this is how it is supposed to be. It must be said that the flavor was very good.

Bread was never brought out or offered.

Rice pilaf was not even close to being eatable as have of the rice was hard and dry. This resulted in something similar to Grape-nuts cereal.

The squash was unseasoned and bland.

The clam chowder mixture was gross.

We had hoped it would be better, sadly this is one place we will not be back.

Their hot appetizer is enough to fill two people, along with drinks and possible side of something else to try. It's also great to try all their different stuff in one platter and the price isn't bad.

The other stuff on the menu can get pricey, that's why I suggest the hot apps. But all in all, great service! Love sitting on the outside patio during the summer time and just people watching. Great service as well!

I like to think I'm a pleasant diner. I tip well and I'm not impatient especially if the restaurant is busy. Let me state for the record that I work in downtown RO and I haven't been to Tom's in YEARS. I remember it as a fairly decent seafood joint.

My recent experience there was one of my worst dining experiences ever. First off it was not even remotely crowded; so an hour wait for a four top ordering sandwiches is insane. My companions were dipping oyster crackers in hot sauce as we waited and waited (hello bread basket where are you?). When our food finally arrived about an hour later my Oyster Po Boy was inedible. It looked like it was on a hot dog bun instead of a baguette. The bread was rock hard and the tiny, two oysters pathetic and cold.

I did actually send the sandwich back and what I was given was much better. However with so many places with in walking distances why the hell would I come back here?

It's the service industry people, it's not rocket science.

Food: awesome.
Service: slow, don't order food if you're in a hurry. If you're not in a hurry, it's totally worth the wait.
Drinks: The cucumber martini rocks. Pass on the bloody mary.

Toms was around in the 1992. We went there after a funeral. I think it has stayed pretty consistent except for the service.

Server f'ed up our whole order. 6 bucks for an oberon is way too high. She messed up the size I ordered. Cant believe I even tipped her. Hostess was informed we were not staying for dinner. They messed that up too. Key lime pie is store bought, 5 bucks a slice. Not made in-house.
I ve eaten here a couple times and its not bad. Not for the money though. Tiger games on the TV's above bar is cool. Outside patio a good idea. Inside is very very loud...not a good place to take a first date.

Now I've written rave reviews of toms oyster bar in the past, but with a recent experience, I have to change how I feel. Of course I hd a groupon for me and my mom to go to lunch. Normally, we sit at the table but our waiter was such a jerk because we had the groupon that we had to sit at the bar. The bartender was eating and handling our money while taking our order. He was extremely rude, dry, and made us feel like having a groupon was the worst thing on the planet. My advice to this business, if you don't want people to use their groupons, stop posting them on groupon! I will never return here again!!!!

they have a great happy hour, and an outside covered area for dining. PLUS, free wifi. i've been a loyal fan to all places 'oyster bar', this one included.

So as I write m y review, Tom's is averaging a 3 1/2 stars. Sounds about right.
We been wanting to come here for awhile, looks like it may be one and done.
We just missed happy hour, the draft prices are a lil' high ($7 for my hubby's beer)
and I was really not sure about the bartender. Definitely wasn't his day.

We ordered the baja fish tacos which were of the select items that are on the "must try" menu section. They were pretty good.

The clam chowder? Eh. Good for a few bites, but everyone at our table ordered a bowl. I really feel like we all almost felt obligated to finish our chowder. It really was more of a gravy consistency and not really my speed at all. I wouldn't order it again.

The dinner came, we ordered the Summer Shandy fish & chips. They were good, as was the coleslaw.

Nothing spectacular and I won't be rushing back. I"m not angry or anything, just a wee bit disappointed.

I was pretty disappointed in my experience at Tom's. When we arrived the hostess said it will be a 15 min wait to get a table outside. There was an empty outside table right by the door, and as we sat at the bar the table remained empty. About 20 min later I asked the hostess how much longer she thought it would be, and she responded less than 5 min. 10 min later we were sat at the table that was empty since we arrived. When I asked her about it she said that two guys were sitting there, and if I was sure it was empty. I guess I can't be 100% sure but I'm not blind.

During our time at the bar, we witnessed the bartender yell at another employee, who seemed to be in training. "YOU DO WHAT I TELL YOU," is what welcomed us to the restaurant. The bartender had instructed him to change the keg for the beer that we ordered, proceeded to yell at him when the guy did not immediately drop what he was doing. Once the keg was changed the bartender took his sweet time to actually get us our beers. If it was a big enough deal for the bartender to yell at this guy, don't you think he would be in a hurry to get us our drinks? Apparently not.

Once we were seated and were no longer bothered by the bartender and hostess we were able to have a great evening. The waitress was super nice and made great suggestions. The food was alright, but seemed pretty expensive for what it was.

Overall, we probably won't go back: too expensive and crappy bartender & hostess.

I have yet to have the oysters here, but I will one of these days. I snuck out of work to take advantage of Restaurant Week during lunch. I love sneaking into RO when it is a ghost town (weekdays during the day). I liked everything. The scallops as an appertizer were brilliant and the pepper was not off-putting. I had the encrusted whitefish with grilled zucchini and squash - also excellent. The apple fritter was a perfect closer. Luckily the mains were seafood; otherwise, there would have been serious food coma going on at work!

I love their happy hour, their beer selection, and their perch.

With that said, I find their beers pretty pricey. Like get-over-yourself pricey. I think they're trying to milk the craft beer craze for all it's worth. And they only have two sampler racks! Two! If you're going to try to be a beer bar that offers samplers, you may want to have more than two racks on hand. Just sayin'.

I have been to Tom's twice, and I only go when there is a Groupon. Mainly, I go because my boyfriend enjoys seafood and with the Groupon offer, it's a cheap way to treat him to dinner.

I am allergic to shrimp and shellfish (tear!), but I still found plenty of other things on the menu that I could eat. The food is just okay and like I said, I only go if I have a Groupon for the place. The prices are kind of high for the size of the portions they serve. The beer selection is pretty decent - I was thrilled to find that they served Founder's! I haven't been totally impressed with the service, but to their credit the last time we were there, it was on a busy Saturday night. We were seated fairly quickly (only had to wait about 15 minutes even though the hostess said 30). It took a long time for a server to come to us, and he forgot a few things, but that was forgivable because he was very polite and friendly (I've worked in a restaurant before and I know how chaotic things can get, especially at that time on a Saturday!)

And is it just me or is it REALLY loud in there?

I was very disappointed the other evening when I went to check out the "new" Tom's Oyster Bar. I had a http://restaurant.com coupon and took my daughter. We were seated next to the bar at a high top and were ignored for about 5 minutes. Finally our server said that she would be right with us. When she came back she apologized for the delay.

We started with some oysters which were fine. The clam chowder had a good flavor but was very thick and pasty. I wanted some fresh fish for dinner so imagine my surprise when I found out that the walleye and the perch were frozen, not fresh! No thanks! I ended up getting the crab cake atop a salald. The crab cake was very bland and didnt appear to have much in the way of actual crabmeat in it. My daughter had the cedar planked salmon, which was excellent. It was cooked properly and had a nice crispness on top while remaining moist inside.

All in all, not a super meal, and I was a huge fan of the "original".

What kills me is how little time I spend at home in Royal Oak, always traveling always somewhere else, what makes it worse is when I was around the RO all the time, Tom's was half the size always smoky and completely removed from my radar, now they are spacious, smokeless, and amazing!

During Arts Beats and Eats, I wanted a peaceful pause from the havoc that was the Washington corridor; I found my respite in Tom's...

Quick friendly service, not once but two time (thanks Aarron), fresh perfectly prepared cedar plank salmon with red skins and vegetables... On my first visit for an appetizer I downed a grand piece of Key Lime Pie, it was perfect not too sweet with a buttery wonderful graham cracker crust, the second time was all about fresh oysters I went with a sampler platter that included six different varieties all were wonderful no fishy no nasty! I noticed a dollar oyster happy hour deal, I plan on putting that on my agenda some time soon!

Tom's I am so happy to have rediscovered you once again!

I thought this place is okay, it's just very expensive and the portions are pretty small.

A dozen oysters will run about $20 when it's not Happy Hour. They're reasonably fresh and tasty, and I'm comparing this to picked-off-the-beach fresh in Seattle. So good marks for this.

The meals ($12-20) are a little more disappointing. I ordered fish tacos, apparently one of the most popular items on the menu. When it came out, it was exactly as described -- fried fish on coleslaw on flour tortilla. Imagine those ingredients together without a sauce or something to bind it all, and you can taste the meal that I had. Not bad...but not great.

Drinks are plentiful, and I do like their draft beer ($5) selection.

After a long day of moving and unpacking..we came here for some oysters and beer. Local Royal Oaks pub known for oyster and light food was what we had in mind..

Our oysters was ok, not very cold; there was 6 variety from Prince Edward Island and Virginia. We thought the oyster was too mild and did not have much meat or taste to it. After a dozen later, we knew this joint was not what we want to eat. While having their Tom's porter and ale, we did also order their coconut shrimp, which turn out ok, some burnt more than other, but they had used a unsweetened coconut which made it easy to eat.

This was a good place to chill and have a drink. In the middle of town, and good place to people watch.

Wait staff super-friendly, Food very good. On a surprisingly happening bar/restaurant strip in Royal Oak. Loved the patio scene on the street.

Went to Tom's for the first time because of a Groupon.
Arrived after 8 PM on a summer Thursday night and loved the busy scene outside. All the motorbikes were out that night and it was a real happy. positive vibe on the street.

Place was very busy, door staff said @ 15 mins wait, but the four of us were seated in 5 mins. Our waiter was super-friendly and offered us a shandy sample as we sat down.

Ordered Mussels and Calamari for apps, the kids favourite. Both were good, although a suggestion may be to serve the mussels in a bowl vs a bucket to keep them hot longer. Calamari was meh...maybe a zippier sauce might kick it up a notch.

2 folks had Erie Perch - very good. Only complaint was sides (potatoes & zucchini) came buttered even though didn't ask for that.
One of us had Jambalaya...he said he liked it very much.
I had cornmeal-encrusted walleye. The fish was very tasty, however the cornmeal encrusting didn't do anything for me, a bit too thick and heavy for my tastes.

Tom's is one of the few joints that survived Royal Oak's major Re-vamp over the last 10 years.

I loved it then, and I still love it!!

Went there for dinner last night. Arrived about 8. The girl first said it was a 45 min wait to sit outside and about 20 mins to sit inside.

I happily suggested to her to tell the other people waiting to leave, and see if we could get outside a lil quicker... Then I gave her a wink. She laughed and said she would see what she could do.

I mozied on over to the bar with my friend and ordered a beer. There was one seat open at the bar, besides this guy who apparently had an imaginary date, that wouldn't let my friend use "her" seat. So, I took the available seat.

The imaginary date eventually arrived long after we were seated. LOL!!

Within 15 minutes, the cute little door girl comes over and whispers that she has a table outside for us!!

We take our drinks and head to the patio and we are greeted by this little cutie waiter named Steve, who was very sweet and funny!

We ordered some more beers and 2 oyster shooters.

If you don't know what an oyster shooter is, it's vodka, wochestershire, hot sauce and a raw oyster. They're fucking DELICIOUS!!

We slam those and order the ginger shrimp appetizer and the crab cake dinner.

The ginger shrimp were amazing; plump shrimp cooked perfectly with cracked mustard and spinach to finish it off. YUM!!

Then we ordered 2 more oyster shooters, and our dinners came.

The crab cakes were yummy, and they give you 2 big ones. The potatoes and veggies were meh, but I ate till I was stuffed!!

More fun with the waiter, and we were on our way.

Bill with like 4 beers each, the 4 shooters, app and dinners was $83.00 and well worth it, in my opinion...

I'm going back Thursday to meet friends, and I can't wait!!

/Awesome!

Finally dined here after living in RO for the past few years. I was not very impressed with my first visit.

Service was fine and dandy. The food was mediocre at best. My girlfriend ordered the Asiago Whitefish. It was just OK. I ordered the pan fried perch dinner. This fish itself was a tad overcooked and little too greasy for my liking. My biggest complaint was that the serving size was 5 little bitty pieces of perch (think chicken nugget size). They were bite size. At $22 for the perch, I expected a little something more. Both of us ordered veggies with the dinner. Tasted like it was straight our of a bag.

In total, we spent about $50 and came away feeling empty. Like I said, not very impressed with this visit. If there was anything positive to come away with it was the $1 raw oysters during Happy Hour. Those were pretty good.

I ordered the crab cake po boy and was pretty unimpressed. The bun was soft & tasty, but the crab cake was pretty soft, the consistency of mashed potatoes. I was expecting a little crispiness on the outside, but this one tasted a bit like it was fresh from the microwave.

I also ordered the seafood chowder, and was surprised when I saw it had a tomato base. For some reason, I was expecting a white cream soup. Although the soup tasted ok, I did not find anything readily identifiable as seafood in it. Next time I'll try the clam chowder or lobster bisque.

The negatives aside, the crab bruschetta was pretty good, and the shrimp salad that we ordered was also good. Our server seemed on top of things.

The menu had a lot of appealing items, I think I chose a couple of bummers in the soup and sandwich. Next time I'll go for one of the fish filets. So although I wasn't completely wowed, the place has enough potential that I'll be back to try it again, and hopefully upgrade my rating.

Went here tonight with my parents, who were visiting from Philadelphia. I liked this place for a few reasons:
1. Their non-smoking section was a separate room, such that once you were in it, you weren't bothered by the stale smell of cigarette smoke in the other room.
2. They had a very large menu, with something for everyone, and everything looked amazing and tasted as good as it sounded. I had the perch, was was simple but quite good, especially when I spread some of their homemade Dijon on it (ask for their Dijon instead of the tartar sauce it comes with). I also had some smoked shrimp as an appetizer....it was heavenly!
3. Our waitress was super personable and quite helpful. She allowed us to enjoy our food at a relaxed pace.
4. Their decor was pretty neat...wood paneling interior walls, with framed posters of fish as well as water-themed framed copies of "The New Yorker."

One thing, though: I'd go to this place for lunch instead of dinner in the future; I think about 90% of their menu is the same for lunch and dinner, so you might as well save some money (going here for lunch is about $6 cheaper for most of the seafood dishes).

For some reason I figured Tom's Oyster Bar would do most fresh seafood on an equally great level. I should have read the name of the restaurant again.

Doh! Just oysters. Okay.

The lovely brass plaque outside the door gave me so much hope.

I tried the oysters on a shell. Great. Fresh and served with horseradish and cocktail sauce. Had to ask for the lemon, but loved it otherwise.

Tried the calamari. It was an unseasoned breading, and the calamari was rubbery. Such a terrible waste of squid. I haven't had rubbery calamari in years! Can't even remember who served it badly last. Oh well.

Tried the Seafood Chowder. I just knew I would get a rich, seasoned, seafood base creamy soup. It was bland. Like eating warm mayo bland. Wow. And the seafood was microscopic while the potatoes were abundant.

I could have had Chunky's!

Otherwise the service was attentive, and the house chardonnay is not bad at all. Come here for the oysters.

You know....Tom's is really just OK...now, I know their Oysters are fantastic eventhou I haven't eaten them, but give me the choice and I would much rather pay 5 dollars more for an entree at get amazing fish at Streetside in Bham....

My friend and I started off with the calamari and it was a MAJOR disappointment...the last time I was here I had been, well, overserved, and don't remember the calamari sucking as much as this did. It was a darker brown breaded color in rectangular strips...WTF? Isn't it supposed to be in rings and lightly breaded??? The portion was not large or tasty enough for the 8.95 price tag...not to mention it only came with cocktail sauce...where is the aoili sauce like at 220?? damn.

Even wine that should be cheap are on the more $$$ side..another WTF?

Now, my friend really enjoyed her seafood pasta. I ordered something I had before I knew was good and reasonably priced-the Nicoise salad with vinaigrette dressing...it comes with green beans, olives, red skin potatoes and egg...add a 4oz. piece of salmon(which was ok, not the best salmon I ever had) and it's a lower fat protein packed pre-drinking salad if you ask me. It was a good size too.

Never had real sushi here...I have always gotten California or avocado rolls like this time...the avocado wasn't rubbery or brown so that is a victory!

Would I go back? Probably not on my own , but if I had friends that wanted to go, it's 'ok' enough to find something decent to fill you up...I can always fall back on my salad...

I'm not a real lover of fish food... although maybe I'm just not a real lover of THE THOUGHT of fishy food? B/c I eat sushi quite often and I love fresh fish breaded and pan fried... but not fish in a restaurant. You can imagine why I'm not a big fan of much on their menu.
So this review won't hold the fact that they're a fish restaurant against them!
One thing I AM a fan of are martinis. I ordered a usual, dirty, grey goose, with a splash of vermouth. Now, the bar area was pretty crowded and it was hard to communicate well with the older gentleman that I was told "makes the best martini in Royal Oak" so I thought maybe I had a hard time hearing him when I thought he said "no, no... you don't want vermouth in your martini."
RRRRRRR! (record skipping) Uhh, excuse me sir? Have we met before? Do youuu knoooow me? Do you call me at home? Do you have a dorsal fin?!?!

It was a decent drink, just not as good as it could have been... had I had my vermouth. Never, ever tell the customer what they do or don't want! Just make the drink.
I proceeded out to my car to find I had locked my keys inside. THAT gets 1 star. The bar gets 2.

I miss the old sign. It was one of those fluorescent back-lit signs, and it was blue. Whenever I passed it by, I was reminded of the Blue Oyster from Police Academy, and then in turn my writing professor. Good times. But after years of guffawing at the sign, they opted for this newer, slicker sign. C'est la vie.

It took years for me to actually go in and try their seafood. Actually, I'm happy I waited a while. It gave me time to put some mileage on my palate, so when I walked into Tom's I actually knew the difference between mediocre and exceptional seafood.

And really, seafood seems to be really tricky to cook. Fish aside, shellfish especially are really hit or miss around town. I'd say that Tom's has a pretty firm grasp on the finer workings of shellfish.

In fact, the only place I can think of that has better mussels than Tom's is Gratzi in Ann Arbor. They were that "just right" region between falling apart and the texture of a pencil eraser!

I'd suggest trying Tom's if you're into seafood. The location and interior may lead you to believe that it'll be poorly made, but the price is right and the cooks' level of skill is more than alright!
