I believe the Top O' The East is now closed due to the hotel undergoing renovation after being sold to a chain.

The epitome of wasted potential. The location and view are well worth 5 stars, but everything else is severely lacking. The service is often dismal. The decor is pathetic. The lighting with the bright white lamps ruins what could be a swanky lounge feel.  Please get some assistance from an interior designer!

I'm a local and would like to be a regular here, but they just miss the mark on too many points. They should take some lessons from the bar staff at another local hotel where the bar is in the basement, yet it rocks. Top of the East is on the roof with a view and can't make locals or hotel guests happy. Get your act together!

Great place for a quiet drink at the end of the day.

The selection of drinks is good, but seemed expensive to me. Am I just that good at finding drinks in my current hometown of NYC? I dunno. Expensive, but the drinks were very, very strong. Knock you off your ass in half a drink sort of strong.

The view is expansive. Too bad the new renovations will probably ruin it.

Great place for pre-dinner drinks or appetizers. As you may have noticed, I'm a fan of places that you can take business partners to and this is one. Quiet, comfortabel, and nice view, as well as stmosphere.

the one star is for the lovely view of portland, the missing 4 for the degrees of disappointment we experienced here last night!
used to be cool & dreamy with leather couches and deep chairs arranged for conversation. dinks were impeccable. a place to order a flight and chill with good friends after dinner.
for a minute last night thought i was at a bad wake! cheap flowers & stiff new chairs, what a waste of a great space. muzak? really? & sloppy martinis. i'm embarrassed for whoever thought these choices were somehow sophisticated...
okay so sure, the sleepy secret old top of the east was probably a lot less profitable. can't blame them for wanting to go bigger. but come on, hire a real lighting designer and lose the cheap christmas balls!

The view, the wine & the service were wonderful. Kudos to the bartender who suggested a great restaurant for us even while he was getting slammed by a huge crowd on a rainy evening.

Not a bad place for a drink on a nice, clear day.... An overall great view of the city/water and mountains. Kinda pricey drinks, but some of 'em are very creative... Not an every weekend kind of visit, but a nice change of pace from some of the other bars in town for sure.

This is a great spot in Portland because is there really anything else like it? Great view, nicely decorated, service was fantastic and the drink prices were to be expected. We had 5 drinks and 5 vouchers on one bill and no problem using all of them. The bartender didn't push us for more drinks and seemed to appreciate that we asked for the bill before vouchers so we could tip him appropriately.  I have no complaints about this place!

I came up to Portland this past weekend for a bachelorette party. We stayed at the Eastland which was absolutely amazing! Us girls were in one of the suites at the hotel. We got 4 drink vouchers to use at the Top of the East. It had a nice view but the waitress we had was horrendously rude. We gave her the benefit of the doubt assuming maybe she was stressed out, since it was a Friday night and they were pretty busy. It wasn't until an elderly couple sat down next to us who she went over to and was as sweet as pie. We ended up asking for the bill after our first round. We tried to use the 4 drink vouchers we had (we ordered 8 drinks), but the waitress said we could only use one at a time. I could have been rude right back, and asked her to split up the bill 4 ways and then given her back a voucher with each bill....but decided against it last minute. We paid good money to stay in our suite for the weekend and wanted to show a friend a good time. This definitely got our night off on the wrong foot with a bad first impression of Portland. Luckily, there are plenty of other great restaurants in downtown Portland that still know how to treat their paying customers!

Besides the bad service, the price was outrageous. A 12oz bottle of Sam Summer costs $6.50. I get that you pay for the view, but even the view wasn't that spectacular. The restaurant is only 12 stories up. I've paid less for a beer at the top of the hub in boston. Okay, I made that up...I've never been to the top of the hub but that sounded accurate.

If good service is still important to you avoid this restaurant. If you're with a bachelorette party, don't bother coming to this restaurant.

We've visited here on our past 2 Portland visits.  The first time, it was so foggy outside that we couldn't see anything from the glass lined bar room.  The drinks are fairly expensive and the service is nothing extraordinary, so it's not much of a destination on a rainy day.

On our second visit, the weather still wasn't ideal, but we had decent visibility.  It definitely is a nice view from the top of the city!

If it's a nice day, you want some fun cocktails, and you're not pinching pennies, then this place is worth a visit.  Otherwise, you might want to try elsewhere.

Good place to have a drink on a clear day.
Nice atmosphere, and good selection of drinks.
Had the scallop app and it is what pushed this review to four stars.
    Go check it out.
    Cheers

I came here with my friends & my friend's uncle who was showing us around Portland.  Gorgeous views of the city and Casco Bay.  We didn't have any food so I can't comment on that, but the views here are worth making the trip, and if you don't feel like spending $$ for the food just have a drink.  I bet its even better at sunset.

If you're looking for a place to bring a tourist, this is it.

Goodish drinks (a great selection but lackluster preparation), completely mediocre food and service--the last time I was there I had to repeatedly get the attention of the bartender, who was chatting with another hotel employee for an hour, but a mind-blowing view, for Portland.

High atop the Eastland Hotel is a wonderful place for cocktails and appetizers with a view to die for.  That place would be Top of the East.

Great wine list, high end liquors with a little menu of cheese platters and such-  you can't beat the view from this rooftop oasis just off Congress on High St.  Whether you are a hotel guest, or not-  it doesn't matter, as you can just roll on in and enjoy a relaxing happy hour.  Visiting musicians and celebs seem to stay at the hotel, so you never know who you'll meet there!

One of Portland's nicer watering holes, for sure.....

Classy is a state of mind really, and it often takes an environment like this to get you there.

As a Portland native I never even knew about this place until some friends suggested it last night.  I believe its actual name is the "Portland Maine Jazz Lounge" which unfortunately set me up for some disappointment when I showed up and there was no live jazz, nor were they playing good jazz but instead some sort of elevator jazz that couldn't offend anyone.

It's quite the predictable environment, to be honest - an overpriced, cookie-cutter hotel style lounge that seems to cater to a corporate clientel that can afford to waste their money.  The drinks are decent but could be better. Our waiter was a classy, clean-cut English-is-not-my-first-language dressed in black very graceful and patient in his actions.

The view is awesome and quite frankly I didn't know there was anywhere in town that offered this level of quality view of the Portland "skyline" and definitely makes it worth coming back.  There just aren't too many places in town that offer this kind of atmosphere in general so it makes it worth it when you want something different or just want to bask in the classiness/swankiness.

WOW, What a view!!!  The drinks or just OK, but the view make the price of the drinks  worth it!

Best view in town. Great first date location or other special location for a drink.

When I'm feeling swanky, this is my go-to spot.

Leather chairs, black interior, bulky security guards checking your IDs at the door, and an elevator with decorational-use-only buttons - the epitomy of swank. The view is enough to get you intoxicated, if the drinks don't do the trick. Don't come here looking for anything fancier than a Dark & Stormy that will literally knock you off your feet - the cocktail list itself is minimal. The view, though, oh! Sadly it still makes me long for the Philadelphia skyline... but Portland shall suffice.

A truly lovely view of Portland Harbor through big plate windows make spending a sunset at a corner table, hidden away high in the rooftop lounge of the Eastland, a perfect way to tick away a few hours.

The drinks aren't made with the most attention, but if you like your liquor and wine straight up you won't care, as their selection is vast. A bar menu of classy New England staples includes a 15% mark up for the view (but is kinda worth it anyway).

I have always been a fan of hotel lounges and the way they can always seem slightly sepia toned and their bored staff can shape shift into barkeeps from days gone by: this one is a perfect example.

I would go here with my mother for a pre-dinner martini.
I would go here with a lover for an evening canoodle.
I would go here with my best friend for a mid-day laugh high up and away from it all.

But mostly, I plan on going back for the sunset.

(Note to the owners: You need to hire a few more cleaning people. The crazy amount of dirt on the windowsill, cruddy spray bottle next to it and dead plant in the window was gross. The comments my table shared over this sad site made a nearly five star experience clearly a four.)
