Ehh. I want to like Tulip, but its just ok in my book. I have not tried the Hibachi yet, it sounds fun from all the yelling and gongs I hear from the dining room. I have been there about 10 times with most visits in the bar area. Tulip has a good atmosphere and decor and one of the only busy bars in Stoneham after 9pm. The food is ok- sushi is standard and entrees i've tried are good but nothing to write home about. The beer and wine selection is decent. I'm not a huge fan of their mixed drinks, they tend to be overly sugary.

A friend and I needed an equidistant location to share dinner - and Tulip happened to be right on the spot.

We had a fine dinner of chicken with broccoli and garlic noodles, and jasmine tea. Simple and good. It's the common kind of pan-asian restaurant with lots of drinks and a wide variety of entrees and appetizers to choose from.
Service was fine. Quiet and prompt.

I'd happily eat here again if we needed a place to meet. Wouldn't make a special trip though - it was good, but nothing I couldn't get closer to home.

Wow, GREAT hibachi and dining room. We go there too much and now we need to hit the gym more often than we do. The food is REALLY good. Hibachi is pretty expensive but oh so worth it.

Went for lunch on a Sunday w/ a group of 8. We had the lunch buffet which was $11. Pretty good food and choices, even the in-laws liked it and they are a bit picky. I liked the clams w/ black bean sauce w/ a little kick. There was salmon, ck wings, noodles, fried rice, peking raviolis, some sushi, ck teriyaki, baked mussels, lobster sauce, baked seafood, etc. The usual for desserts - ice cream, fruit. Service was decent, water refilled. Decor is modern, clean bathrooms.

The Habachi side is poor at best. Just left there 30  minutes AGO. Still hungry. The couple next to us ordered more rice because they were still hungry. Loud music and disco lights were the theme for the night. Why ?? Its asian cuisine. I am 54 and did not see any young people in the place except those with a Birthday. I ordered an app. that I never received. The waitress reached over my plate to recover a plate next to me. Everyone knows you do not reach in front of a customer.  The Asian side is great and the food is good but do not try the Habachi side. Really cheap on the food and portions.

we have been here 3 times for the Buffet hours, and i must say we are very happy with the price $10.50 Adults and so far young children no charge which is rare, great selection of food and always new food being brought out, as for the service A- the reason for the minus is waiting for beverage refills they are slow to check on you. im looking forward to coming here again but my wifes doctor told her to cut back on the salts since she is pregnant so i must wait patiently or sneak there my self lol. As long as the dont change the pricing or anything there business should do well for a while.

Buffet Lunch: Quantity, yes, but not much quality.

Went here today because our favorite Asian restaurant in Stoneham, Kyotoya, is closed due to renovations. (Please hurry up, already!)

You do get lots of choices at the $10.50 lunch buffet, but the quality isn't great. The Peking ravioli had a thick crust and the filling doesn't taste very good, either. The General Gao's chicken is OK, but not much else in the buffet was worth mentioning.

The servers cleared our plates promptly and refilled our water glasses quickly as well.

I agree with another reviewer that the buffet at the Mandarin in Reading is much better. Make the drive there from Stoneham!

But again, I hope that Kyotoya reopens SOON!

My wife and I have been dining at Tulip's since it's opening late last year. We order out a lot but when dining in, love the bar area. There are many high-def televisions to watch all our favorite sports.

Now for the food,,, exceptional. We've never had a selection where we were disappointed. Everything is fresh and delicious. Peking Ravioli are cooked to perfection. Not greasy and full of flavor. The Mango Grilled Shrimp are very different and very delicious.

Drinks are a perfect pour and the service is friendly and unhurried. So happy to have this establishment so close to home. Whenever I have a craving for Chinese, this is the only place to go.

Wide variety but not great quality.  I tried it didn't care for it.  Rather go to a real chinese restaurant.  Manderin is 10x better.

Been AMAZING 4 out of 5 times.  Perfect for a birthday dinner or a group of friends.  Tepinyaki is the way to go!  And ask for GIANT as the chef.  He's the best.

I go here with my 4 and 6 year old and they think this place rocks!!!

    First impression:
Damn, this place is so ugly outside! What is up with that sign with the colors of the Italian flag?!
Inside the decor is more better, it's dark and has a lot more space than you'd think.

    FOOD:
We have had lunch buffet here and while there were quite a few options, a lot tended to be greasy and flavors were just ok. I have also had sushi here and it was average. Not the best but it didn't make me sick either so that's something. My friend seems to have enjoyed the sesame shrimp.

    OVERALL:
Honestly, I hope this place tries a little harder with the food because it has some potential.

I Love Love Love this place, me and my fiance go here at least once a month, the food is awesome, i love that they have tons of veggie options.
The waitstaff is very nice and quick. we have never tried the Hibachi but we plan on it soon!!
So glad that they are around our home.
Off the chain drinks and food and a warm atmosphere always a plus in my book!

The food is delicious and the atmosphere is fun.  Just be careful when you order that you know what comes with your meal and what does not.  When you order the staff casually asks questions like, "'fried or white rice?" insinuating there is a choice when what they are really doing is adding side orders to your dinner.  Same with drinks, they are not bottomless.  Other than that it is a good time, easy to get to, lots of parking and the grill experience is a lot of fun.

Should have gotten take out again -- we decided to go out this year for Chinese food on New Years Eve instead of getting takeout. What a mistake!  The buffet was very tired looking when we got there. What was there was lukewarm. Items were replenished but not fast enough. I know this is a new restaurant but they should have been prepared; after all, they took reservations and knew it was going to be busy. There were quite a few different items on the buffet but nothing that impressed. Stick with the usual items and do it well. That's what most people look for on a buffet. It's too bad because I'd heard a lot of good things about this restaurant. Might be worth another shot but definitely not on NYE again!

This review if for the New Year's eve buffet.

How do you say "forget about it" in Chinese?  Lots of options but very few good options.  This night was an "upscale" version of the lunch buffet/ the Lobster w/ginger and scallions was very good if you happened upon a fresh batch coming out.  Though the lobster pieces were very small and from all parts of the lobster, even the head.  Otherwise things were pretty bland or odd tasting.  The rice noddles tasted like a dirty dish rag.

At 7:30 PM the buffet area looked really beat to shit and dirty.

Been there, done it.  We'll skip Tulip on New Year's eve.

No tea is weird for a Chinese restaurant ......We got the orange chicken, assorted appetizers, friend rice, and edamame for our meal. Food was decent and tasty.
The waitress was a little rude and seemed bothered by our few requests. We came with a group of 8 so after dinner  asked for coffee told they don't have any. We got chocolate fried ice cream. We've gotta fried ice cream many places usually its a hard crusty coating this was more like a chicken finger batter which wasn't too good. Place is clean. Prob would come back just for meal.

Went here for the lunch a few weeks ago and, I must say,  I was VERY impressed !

Thedrinks were amazing and the  buffet was well stocked with plenty of tasty asian dishes and desserts ~ I dont normally make multiple trips back up but I was happy to break that rule THAT day

I'm sure dinner is OFF THE CHAIN as well  and I'll be back to experience that soon!

In closing,  if your looking for some DECENT/TASTY  chinese food for lunch ....take your TWO LIPS over to TULIP LOUNGE !

I really like this Stoneham hangout!  Totally a great place in the area with low drink prices and yummy sushi.  I've been in lots of times for a quick drink or bite and really love it here!  One of the best in the area.

Sat for 30 minutes, wondering why those who arrived after us were seated before us.  Watched a few hostesses get fired.  Seated right away.  Funny how that works.

Great food, fun atmosphere.  Walking in is like walking into a club.  Loud house music and a lively bar.

Try to not get your eyebrows burnt off or piss off any of the local women dressed like they are headed out in Vegas.

I went here for  a post work drink with my cousin and I have to say, I was impressed! It doesn't look like much from the outside but inside is the décor is hip and trendy!

The drink menu had a decent selection and while the prices were a little steep - the drinks were strong making them well worth the price tag. The same can be said about the sushi - a bit expensive but it was fresh and some of the best sushi I've had.

The service was a little lack luster, especially given there weren't many people there that night, but nothing that would prevent me from going back again.

Overall: Great atmosphere, good food and strong drinks!

The food at the buffet is mediocre at best. I had dinner in the hibachi steakhouse once and the food was excellent. It is extremely noisy in there so we couldn't really have a conversation. The show the cook put on would have been great EXCEPT the part where they think it's ok to flip shrimp or broccoli in your mouth. Save that for the children please  And they also think its ok squirt sake in your mouth. I have been too many, many hibachi restaurants before and never saw food or drinks flipped or squirted in peoples face. And i told the chef not to do it but he would try again  Utterly ridiculous.  Shame because the food was good. That's the only reason why I gave it 3 stars.

Wear old clothes or a bib before trying this restaurant!

My friend told me of this new restaurant and we finally tried it.  My first impressions were positive.  Very nice looking restaurant.  Seemed hip.  Very clean.  We decided to eat in the teppanyaki room.  Our server, Nancy, was very serious.  I think we must have had a nervous chef - or it was one of their first nights.  He knocked over items onto the floor - picking them up and placing them back on the same tray with the fluids, butters, and our meat.

While he was cooking, he starting squeezing a bottle of saki into my friends mouth.  As he did that, he squeezed another bottle toward me which ended up being a soy/ginger teriyaki style sauce that ruined my shirt and pants.  Upon realizing what he had done, the chef called over our server.  She returned to the table with 3 moist toilette packets and some napkins.  She asked if I wanted soda water.  She brought that over.  Not once did a manager come over to ask about what had happened. This was a major concern of mine.

The food was decent.  Onion/Mushroom soup good.  Salad was swimming in dressing.  A salad spinner and control of how much dressing is put on the salad would be a good start.  Chicken cooked perfect.  Steak we requested medium rare - was tough and well done.  Fried rice was excellent.

When the meal was over, we received the check.  They also provided fortune cookies.  Very tacky.  They should rethink this.  Supposed to be upscale Japanese - fortune cookies make no sense.  Upon reviewing the check, I was surprised to see nothing was done on the check to make good on what had occurred prior to the meal.  My friend and I sat and thought if we would say anything.  We decided not to. While sitting there thinking, our server must have realized we were upset.  She came over to ask us if we wanted dessert.  She asked us this AFTER giving us the check.  Not impressed by the staff of this restaurant.

Due to poor customer service both from server and manager (or lack their of), I will not return to this restaurant and I advise anyone reading to frequent any of the surrounding Asian cuisine in the area.  Customer service at those establishments are top notch.  As suggested at the start of this review...if you must try this place, wear old clothes or bring a bib.  Do not expect customer service here.  It's lacking.

Excited for a new option in Stoneham...and something to finally fill the old Ames location....but was not impressed.  Went to the Hibachi side.  Food was a bit overcooked and overall just bland.  Server didn't have much personality.
Cook put on a show as is typical, but also dumped an entire glass of wine all over me with little acknowledgement or apology.  Didn't appreciate the lack of customer service.

If the food was better I'd likely give it another try.  But the two together....nope.

Tulip is nice inside, but I wasnt thrilled with the Hibatchi.  VERY LOUD so dont expect to have conversations while sitting at the grill.  Also, I ate sushi one night and got sick.  I would go back for the bar and maybe the chinese food, but definitely not the hibachi (very small portions) or the sushi.  Could take it or leave it and I perfer others in the neighborhood over this place.

I tried here last night and was impressed with they sushi rolls and their drinks. The hibachi was enjoyable, but the others seated with us were not. I am sure that they experience would have been more fun with a better crowd seated with us. The hibachi was pretty well cooked but lacked a bit of flavor. I do see a lot of potential in this restaurant and would like to try it out again after a few months.

My family and I went here to celebrate a birthday. At 7:30 on a Friday the hibachi area was packed! And the hip hop/dance club music was really loud! It was difficult to have a conversation with anyone at the table. The service was fine, and the hibachi show was the same as all of the other hibachi places I've been to. And like the other hibachi restaurants I've been to, the food was delicious as always. It is a little more expensive than a regular dining experience but it's a lot of fun and it's nice seeing where your food comes from and how it is prepared using real, fresh ingredients. I would go back again but maybe not at such a busy time of day.

We are big fans of Bisuteki in Cambridge for hibachi dining so we thought we'd try a local option to see how it compared. The service was fine, the chef was delightful, but unfortunately the food was neither. The fried rice was so heavy with garlic that I couldn't eat it, and I love garlic. The shrimp was overcooked and the sauces were just ok. The steak was pretty good, no gristle. I'd give it a 3 out of 5 if the yelp rating system didn't call 3 "A-OK".

I met my Aunt for lunch around 1:00pm at the Tulip (Asian Food) in Stoneham. I had heard good things about it (don't believe everything you hear). I think people confuse quantity with quality. For $11.50 they had a huge buffet, the biggest I've seen but I thought the food was mediocre at best. They had stuffed muscles that were so fishy tasting I actually spit it out. Im not sure what the stuffing was...it was almost akin to a custard. The steamed dumplings were rock hard.

On a bright note, the skewered chicken and boneless BBQ ribs were actually tasty. The "Sushi" had no fish that I could see but I believe it had dried shrimp flakes. It too was fishy and one piece was enough for me not to eat the other two.

The waiter was very rude. When I asked for the small dish used for the wasabi and soy you dip sushi in he told me to get it myself at the buffet. I use a cane and have a tough time getting around. I shot him a look and said "really?" it must have been enough to light a fire under his ass. He brought it but not without attitude.

Something didn't sit well with me. I've been sick to my stomach all night. Don't think I'll be going to the Tulip again.

Went for the afternoon lunch buffet. Lots of choices and very nice staff. I'd say the food is mediocre, but not horrible. I think the price is about right for what it is. I liked the fact that when a kid started screaming, the staff did everything they could to nicely get them to leave as quickly as possible.

    Clean, too.

I gave this place two tries, as a friend had raved about the lunch buffet (inexplicably, as it turns out). I think for starters, perhaps they are trying to be too many things, a Korean hibachi restaurant, a sushi restaurant and a chinese/polynesian restaurant (and a sports bar too, judging by the big screen TVs in the lounge area).  I'd have to say the overall ambiance and feel is that it is trying to be stylish and modern, but comes off as a bit cold, and uninviting in my opinion. No warmth, very cold and sterile.

The first time we went for dinner, about 2 months after they opened.  We were seated in the sushi room, (though we weren't there for sushi).  There are panels of light constantly changing color around the top of the room, and along the sushi bar, with one bank of tables across from the sushi bar and chefs.  Our server asked if we wanted anything to drink and we said tea would be fine, assuming that like the typical Chinese restaurant, we would receive a pot and two cups.  Instead we each got a glass mug with a teabag in it, which didn't steep very well, as the water was not all that hot.

We ordered the "crispy walnut shrimp", which was described as "A unique five flavored shrimp dish w. sweet walnuts, spices & hint of sweet & sour".  It was labeled as "spicy".  We also ordered another "spicy" dish, the Thai fried rice, and the roast duck with vegetables.  The shrimp and rice arrived first, the shrimp were large, and there were 12 of them, but they were swimming in that bright red syrupy sauce you see in bad Polynesian restaurants on "sweet and sour chicken". It was neither spicy, nor could you detect any of the 5 spices.  It was breaded fried shrimp in that sauce, with a few walnuts thrown in.  The spicy Thai fried rice was more like a yellow curry rice, with almost no vegetables, a couple tiny shrimp, and 4 or 5 cashews, mostly just rice, and not the least bit spicy.  The duck arrived about 5 minutes later, and saved a disastrous night out.  The duck was cooked really well, flavorful, with the typical assortment of veggies, pea pods, baby corn, etc.   All in all, a disappointing meal, which was punctuated by much loud cheering and noise from the hibachi tables, where audience participation is expected apparently (which immediately made us dubious about ever returning for the hibachi experience).

Today I tried the lunch buffet.  I told the hostess I was there for the buffet, and was again seated in the sushi room, the only person in the room. No question there is a great selection of items on the buffet, they all look great as well. One steam table had a wide assortment of the typical apps, crag rangoon, Peking dumplings, chicken wings, boneless pork ribs, steamed dumplings etc, there was a sushi table, and two full steam tables of 12 or so entrees on each. All the apps I tried were mediocre at best, the hot and sour soup had the consistency of mucus, and the only real flavor was the hot pepper.  The rangoon, dumplings, boneless ribs were no better than what you find at a typical fast food Chinese takeout restaurant. There were "lobster balls" (insert joke here) on the app table as well, I took two, about the size of a quarter, only ate one, I love lobster, they were that bad.  I don't think they were even made with real lobster, probably that faux lobster made with pollack.

The entrees didn't fare much better, I tried the semi-exotic, stuffed mussels, clams in garlic sauce, the mundane, General Gau's chicken, roast pork, and the tried and true, chicken chow mein, pork foo yung, vegetable lo mein, vegetable rice noodles, even the "tasty green beans", which tasted just like, well, green beans, all to no avail.  Temperature on everything, despite being on the steam table, was more lukewarm that hot.  After trying two plates, I didn't even bother with the hibachi station ,where there was a choice of shrimp, beef or chicken to stir fry with some bean sprouts, and other veggies.

After I finished, I sat for 10 minutes waiting, for my waiter to return so I could get my check.  There was only one other single diner in the room I was in, and we didn't get much attention.  All in all, for almost 13.00 with tip, the buffet was a big disappointment.

Safe to say, my "two lips" will not be parting for any food from this establishment again.

Don't let the tacky neon open signs and Grand Opening banner put you off.  This restaurant is a good addition to Stoneham with a lot of potential.

We tried the hibachi section tonight (think Benihana).  Our chef was skilled, entertaining and the food was good (not outstanding).  Filet, very good.  Lobster (not Maine) was good.  Chicken overcooked.   It's this writer's opinion that the seasonings still need some work (subtlety and refinement), but overall it was a good experience!  We'll go back.

Have heard the buffet (lunches) is a good value and good food.

The interior is beautifully done, very comfortable, and the service was great.  They just have to lose those awful signs out front that give the look of a low end takeaway joint!

We are very cautious about going to new places, especially with Asian food.
There two places in Stoneham to compare Tulip with: One Thai and the other Korean. of which are permanent customers. The restaurant has a nicely decorated interior . The floor is covered by tiles which are very slippery. The ceiling is high and makes for a pleasant feeling of space.
The greeters were very friendly and we did not wait to get a table.
The waitress with a very serious face commanded us to select drinks from the cocktail list.
We are not alcohol drinkers so we preferred to get some sparkling water. This was the first time we had Voss mineral water and it was a good choice because water was very tasty.
Shortly after that the waitress with a very serious and busy took our order. We asked for seaweed salad, beef teriyaki and general gao chicken.
The seaweed salad was a very tasty, but underneath we found a larger portion of thinly sliced dikon.
The Beef was very tasty and tender. The spice and sauce were nicely incorporated and balanced with the beef flavor.
The General Gao chicken failed with all points.
-It is supposed to be bite size, but the pieces of chicken were so big that I had a problem to chew it.
-It is supposed to be crunchy outside and soft inside. But certainly it was over cooked and not crunchy, but soft. S
When we finished the meal, the same supper serious server brought the check without offering any dessert.
I asked her if she offers any dessert. It seems she did not understand my question. Then she told us they don't have desert. I told her that is impossible. She replied they may have just ice cream or fried ice cream.
When the check arrived, we got a cheap fortune cookie.  It would have been classier to skip the fortune cookie.  This restaurant a potential to be a classier place.
I wanted to speak to the manager to express my opinion. I asked the hostess if she was interested on my opinion. She looked at me and she said: no. I realized that she might understand English and so I repeated the question.  After my third attempt she said: yes. She called for the manager Chris Tsao.
He approached with a very serious face and asked: can I help you with a tone which was dismissive and arrogant.
I told him that this was the first time we were here, and offered some suggestions.  He had patience for about ten seconds and suddenly he rudely left us.
I stopped him and asked if he would like to listen to my opinion. He just turned away to do something else.
This restaurant has potential, but the staff is rude and lacks patience. Food: B+.  Service: D.

I went to the new restaurant in town to check it out with my brothers and sister.  Our chef Leo made the night for us... he had a great sense of humor and was truly a great entertainer.  I also went down for the lunch buffet and it had a really good selection/

The next thing to note is that I'm pretty stoked to have another bar option in town since partying at the 99 is just not up there on my todo list.  The bar area is very well done and has enough space to it... I like the bar area at U-Me but it is tiny and the bands they play are usually too loud.   They aren't open too late, but they serve drinks till 10 daily and 11 on the weekends.  Good enough for a lazy local night when you want a drink with your dinner... and maybe mack on some hotties at the same time.

I almost marked the place down two stars for the poor service at night time because it sucked that bad, but I decided to lay off since the lunch service was good and they just opened recently and could have been growing pains.

You get two choices when you walk in... one is to go to the dining room area and one is to sit at the grilling stations.  At lunch time you walk in the back left in the dining area and the buffet is way in the back.  There was a surprisingly large amount of options in the buffet including sushi and a table cook that will make you fresh beef, chicken or shrimp with veggies in the far back.

At dinner time, the dining area to the left is for more private parties and the grilling stations to the right you shared with strangers.  It is much more of a party scene to the right at the hibachi tables.

We are not shy so we went with the grilling stations and were seated with a group of people.  Here is where the place needs to really step it up.  The waitress that we got was simply terrible.  Every drink we ordered took forever to get to us.  It took them over a half hour to even take the orders for food and we had to wait another fifteen minutes to even get the cook at our station.  Once Leo made it to the station the whole mood changed and he cheered up the annoyed crowd with his showmanship and humor.

The food was impeccable and reasonably priced.  I ordered the beef filet, lobster and scallops... came out amazing.  The drinks we ordered were affordable and were pretty good, although I really didn't care for the sake.  I hope in time that they choose to not only have hot sake and get more options that taste much better.  I prefer sake served cold or room temperature and the sake they have tastes like cat piss once you cool it down.

I have a tip for people who don't want to spent a lot on dinners... the lunch menu is all you can eat for less than half the price as the dinner menu... so the same meal that cost me $24 for dinner was priced at $10.50 for lunch... yes please!

I will give a pass on the night service to start with, but I hope they get their service in order in a hurry because it is the only thing holding them back from being the perfect new restaurant in town.

Although in a convenient location with plenty of parking with a friendly staff, the place was freezing cold and after bringing us our order (sushi with no chopsticks!) we didn't see our waiter again for 40 minutes and had to go to a manager to get our bill.  They did discount our bill for the fact that no one came to our table during our meal to see how we were doing or to refill our drinks.  Food was OK.  May go back to try the hibachi.
