Decent sushi rolls, and cute environment.
We weren't expecting a ton, but what we were surprisingly satisfied with was their tekka maki ($4 for 6 pieces). Good proportion of tuna to rice ratio, and the sushi rice had the right amount of vinegar in it. Ironically, their cooked rolls that we ordered, Chicken Teriyaki roll ($7.95 for 5 pieces) and Eel Crunch roll ($6 for 5 pieces) were lackluster and too saucy. Eel crunch roll was cold and there was an overwhelming amount of tobiko. Chicken Teriyaki roll was a rip off considering that there was a tiny sliver of chicken wrapped around a huge mound of sushi rice.
We always have pretty good success with the cooked rolls at Japanese restaurants here in Michigan, but here at Umi, the tuna roll was the star. The servers are really young girls (look like they are in high school), so don't be taken aback if their service is a little slow. They are nice girls. Sushi bar staff was pleasant and cordial.
Overall, I might be inclined to come back here and try their other menu items, but I'm not in a hurry to do so.
we have been going here for about three years. very good sushi at reasonable prices. we always get prompt and polite service. Â this year they started a roll of the day special that is buy one- get one free. Â about 90% of the time I get (or try) the roll of the day. Â convienent location for Shelby Township/Washington area residents
Review Source:Kids and I like this place although it is never our first choice, I don't know why. Sushi is good, udon is good. Fried rice is really good. Gyoza and katsu not so good (both too dry). Prices ok and portions good. I have been here dining in and carryout about 10xs, but it's always been good. Sushi guys behind the bar are friendly, but waitstaff so-so. Almost like they are afraid to say hello. It's not important to me, just an observation.
