Consistently great food and service along with exposed brick walls await you at this coffee shop bustling with locals from this quaint town. This is no ordinary coffee shop - they serve breakfast and lunch with American, Indian, and even Mexican fare. Even if you're not in the mood for a full breakfast the baked goods are great as well. It's super convenient if you're commuting since its directly behind the NJ Transit train to New York.

I felt I should update the review since a number of other reviewers have been disappointed.

On drinks, I don't drink coffee, just hot chocolate. I believe their banana hot chocolate is unique, and I've never had something like that from somwhere else.

On the main dishes, the best thing they have are their unique omelettes, many of which are vegetarian. They list some good vegetarian sandwhiches, but I'm so taken by the omelettes, I never order the sandwhiches.

When you order most items there, you get a choice of three sides, but they only list two: (1) Salad - don't order this, (2) Hash browns, really great and nothing like you've ever tasted the way they cook them and spice them, and (3) Asian pasta, which is not listed on the menu, but which you have to ask for. One of us always orders #2, the other #3, never #1.

As for service, it's simple. It's no Applebees or nothing. We know the staff there and we order by number.

I hope that helps folks enjoy the food there.

Coffee?  Pastries? Breakfast sandwiches?  EVERYBODY does that, so raving about how special, or cool, or whatever about this place is just hot air.  I have been here virtually at least twice month for over a year...mostly on a hurry to catch the train and because the location is so convenient.

I just went in there last week and was once again reminded of why I took hiatus from stopping by just to forget why and run in there again.

In summary (and maybe this is what mattters in a business for me): staff is grumpy, stone faced, slow, rude, have an attitude.... and if you don't kiss their ass they treat you even worse.

It seems they think that scruffy clothes, unshaved chins and greasy hair is something cool.  I think it is about :taking it for granted since the business is good due to location...  lastly...coffee ain't that special and the overheated milk and rushed lattes don't make for a very enjoyable $3.75 drink.

Don't know...  We need a new coffee shop in the village...  at least an espresso machine somewhere.... I'd be there in a seond and would do pro bono PR.

    THERE!  It's out.

    Happy Autumn!

Interesting brunch with an Indian flair.  The home fries is curry flavored - not exactly matching my eggs Benedict.

It was full almost the whole we were there.  I like the fact that we were able to open the doors though the view of the parking lot wasn't exactly exciting.

I think thy need to scrub everything there more often.  The floors, counters, walls were covered with grease... I feel a little scared touching anything.

This place was okay, but nothing spectacular.  Three of us went for a late brunch and we left fed, but that's about it.  Service was less than stellar and we seemed to confuse the waiter by not ordering by number.  There was nothing wrong with anything we ate, but there was nothing great either and some little things were disappointing.  The "mixed greens" my boyfriend ordered as a side was really just a pile of spinach, the home fries I had were pretty bland, that kind of thing.  After the high reviews made my other Yelpers, I'd hoped for more.  Doubt I'd return.

Went here for a late lunch, very nice place with an exotic menu. My ladies meal was amazing, Chana masala. Awesome

My friend and I were traveling when we decided to stop here for a warm drink.  I had a pumpkin chai which was quite unexpected.  It was perfectly mixed, smooth, interesting, and at the perfect temperature.  Although a medium set me back about $3 it was worth it!

Nice all around place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Good omelette and wraps. Coffee is ok but not exceptional.

On a drizzly then pouring rainy day, this place saved me from my rain-induced napping.
I dropped in for an iced latte-- with an extra espresso shot- and caramel... and subdued the kid in tow with a sprinkled cookie...

I forget that they make great coffee here... and the iced latte was no exception to that. It was perfect, slightly warm from the fresh espresso, and then cold from the ice. And, more importantly, woke me up!

Even though the cookies aren't baked there, they are still tasty!

Was looking for a good breakfast/brunch place anywhere near Maplewood/Millburn + found precious few on Yelp, Chowhound, etc.

Glad we found the Village Coffee Shop though. Good service, very reasonable prices, and yummy food. Menu had a great variety of sandwiches, grilled paninis, omelets, salads, coffee drinks, and chai teas. Three of us ordered a salad, a panini, and an omelet. Good flavors, fast service. Coffees were not too sweet. Chais were equally good. All-in-all, a good find in a place otherwise short on breakfast places.

My wife and I go to Village Coffee every now and then to get breakfast or brunch and to gaze out at the picaresque Maplewood downtown.

The restaurant serves up a mix of regular brunch fare (omelets and waffels, etc) as well as mediterranean and Indian food. Everything I've ever eaten at Village Coffee has been tasty and prepared as ordered. The omelets looked pretty nice, and paired in the morning with a salad it is a rather healthy switch from starch-and-sugar equivalents. My wife says the coffee is really good, and I liked the buckwheat waffle.

A few criticisms: The lack of an appreciable host/hostess can jam up the flow of things in the diner, as patrons absorb tables too big for their party, or are unsure of whether they can take a seat when other groups are waiting. There isn't any indication that you should seat yourselves or wait or whatever. In a smaller space like this one, it's best to have someone acting as the gatekeeper.

The breakfast sides can be a little small. $2.25 for a side of sausage gets you one lonely, thin sausage patty. Bacon is two measley ragged strips.

The prices on things can be a bit high for the quality of some of the goods. Regular pancakes are about $6.00. The syrup is served in little plastic peel-away packages and it isn't real maple syrup, only HFCS.

Last, the service is gruff and somewhat inattentive. They're busy, yes, and there's no obvious managing person to make sure that things are getting done or that people have discrete jobs to do, but coffee could be refilled more frequently, or they could remember to bring the water glasses we asked for... twice. Each time I come here, I order OJ or a coffee, "and a glass of water, please." I've yet to get any water. Booo!

So if service mattered to me that much, I'd aim for two stars. But the quality of the food and the overall experience are redeeming enough to put them in the middle category.
