Honestly, I haven't really encountered any to-die-for-seafood in this part of the country and most people I've spoken to say there's not many good seafood places around here. Nonetheless, this place dispenses some yummy seafood along with great service.
If it's possibly going to be your one and only time visiting this joint, you should get the Po' Boy half oyster and half shrimp. Thus, you'll get a taste of 2 precious seafood commodities in one dish. Eating it in one sitting is doable but the sandwich can be intimidatingly big. If you don't want to take it home, like I didn't, just make sure you finish the seafood and leave the bread. You will probably finish the fries no matter what because they are so yummy. They had the perfect amount of crunch and flavor. Don't forget to the utilize the vinegar (on anything) they have in the makeshift sauce holder (recycled 6-pack beer container).
Another thing you should absolutely order is the Crab and Tomato Chowder. I've never seen or had a soup like this. It's basically red colored soup with fat chunks of crab and tomato. A cup of it can be big enough for 2 people who just want to try.
Great experience! AW SHUCKS.
There's something you probably don't know about me... I'm a burger fanatic.  On a recent long weekend out in the Norfolk/VA Beach area, I reached out to fellow Yelpers in the area to find out where the must-have burgers were.  The one time I dined out during the trip (BBQ'd damn near every day), my friends  were in the mood for seafood and were not trying to hear my burger banter.  Me being the food guy, I found a happy middle ground with AW Shucks since I heard good things about their seafood AND burgers.  No ID my mentor, let my story begin...
So let's start with the appetizers. Â We had a huge party so I was lucky enough to try a bunch of stuff. Â First things first, you must order the crab dip no matter what. Â That sh*t was delicious and went super quick. Â The cilantro shrimp appetizer was good as well, but nothing special and the calamari was definitely on point. I'd recommend that for the table.
The entrees were great for the most part, but let's knock the negatives out first. Â Two of us at the table ordered the burger topped with crab meat and cheese, and both of us were left disappointed. Â The massive 10 oz. burger was very under seasoned and you could barely taste the crab. Â Also, one of the kids ordered the chicken and waffles and the chicken was bone dry. Â Now for the good. Â The steak benedict, mac and cheese, jumbalaya, tomato/feta salad, and cobb salad were all great, but the star of the show was the crab cakes. Â For about $18 you get 2 massive crab patties with very little filler, topped uniquely topped with wine braised onions that perfectly compliment them. Â These bad boys just might have been the best crab cakes I've ever had. Â If not for those this would be a 3 star review, so don't leave without ordering them!
I thought this was going to be a go-to hangout spot for me and my fiancé but it was let down. I tried the bread and butter appetizer, fried green tomatoes appetizer and the house special (fried catfish) for my entree. The only dish I enjoyed was the bread and butter. The catfish was seasoned well but my sides were not so great. The hush puppies were a let down. I hated the fried green tomatoes. i could not get over the smell. The seasoning smelled like a date with bad breath. (Sorry, That's the only way I can describe it). The drinks are pretty good. I enjoyed the AW Punch. I will go back because I enjoy the drinks and my server. Maybe I will find something different that I love on the menu.
Review Source:I have been craving some raw oysters since I had some back in Richmond. With us being so close to the beach, there has to be a place that has some right? Thanks to my fellow yelpers and their recommendation of this place, we gave this a try. Pretty risky time to try this out since it was my birthday dinner and I had never been here before. The place turned out to be perfect for all of our seafood appetites! xNote: when you drive to this place, keep an eye out for a blue building.
The Food.
-Calamari: Pretty good. It was cooked just right. My dad ordered 3 of these and all were gone in no time.
-Oyster sampler (pictured): I tried every variety of oyster except the saltiest one. These oysters were HUGE in comparison to the ones I had in Richmond. Â All were cleaned pretty well so no gritty texture. This thoroughly satisfied my raw oyster craving!
-1/2 pound crab legs (pictured): I am ridiculously thorough when it comes to opening crab legs so I feel like I got my money's worth at ~$9.95 for 1/2 pound. The crab meat was on the saltier side, but I didn't mind at all.
The Service.
Like I said, this was my birthday dinner. I made reservations for 12 earlier in the week and we had no problem getting a group of tables for our party in the back corner of the place. Our waitress was pretty on top of things and did a great job keeping us satisfied with timely refills and requests. Our food came out rather quick per my expectations and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. I also love how casual the place is. Plus, it has outdoor seating!
Overall, love love love the place! Such great seafood that the risk of trying this place out for the first time will definitely have me coming back for more!
While traveling, I was looking for a decent place to grab something to eat while watching a basketball game on TV. Â I settled on A.W. Shucks, as the pictures I found revealed a couple screens, and an even better selection of beer.
Being unfamiliar with the area, it took me quite some time to find it. I actually drove by it several times, because none of the signs were lit on this particular night. After a frustratingly long search, I walked in and was greeted with a nice, if kitcshy, seafood tavern theme.
The food selection is extensive, and covers just about any type of seafood you could want. The daily menu of about a dozen types of oyster varieties is nice, although I didn't venture down that road this time. There is also a rotating beer list which includes all manner of craft beers, in addition to typical national brands.
I ordered a craft IPA to go along with my shrimp poboy sandwich. The sandwich was massive, and loaded with shrimp. It was served with tartar sauce, although I opted for cocktail sauce. The shrimp were lightly breaded and properly fried, and they tasted great. The rest of the sandwich was good, although I didn't care for the cole slaw that came on the sandwich.
The bar area is sizeable, and has two small TV's along with one larger one. They don't turn the sound on, which was a little disappointing.
If you're looking for some great seafood (particularly raw oysters) to go along with a tasty beer, A.W. Shucks is a wonderful place to dine.
I had heard about this place from a friend from College who still lives in the area. I decided to try it the next time I was in town. It's a little tucked away but it's right off of 21st street a think. We ordered Crab Legs to start which I thought were a little expensive at first until they came and I tried them. They were hot, juicy and huge, perhaps the best snow crab legs I had ever tasted. I wish I lived in Norfolk still so I could hit up there all you can eat Snow Crab night. After that I ordered the crab shucks, and Mac N Cheese as well as the Spinach. All of it tasted fresh and well cooked. My GF ordered the burger which was also excellent. My waiter was super smooth, and was a professional. I forgot his name but he had on the Tupac T-Shirt lol. I liked the laid back feel of the place, really cool.
Review Source:Being in VA for 3 years now, I think I'm finally getting the whole East Coast thing. One of them being seafood & OYSTERS!!
Never would I have thought that I would eat a raw oyster and love it, let alone crave it.
My man piece talked me into trying them, said that A.W Shucks had a great variety.
Never knew there were so many different kinds and tastes of oysters.
Our server told us pretty much everything that we needed to know about the oysters, where it came from and what kind of flavor it held.
I loved trying the different kinds of oysters. They were very fresh and delicious. I eat mine with a saltine and cocktail sauce, NO slurping... baby steps..
We've been back many times and plan on keep coming back.
We have also tried other things on their menu, and those did not disappoint.
Can't say I'm a fan of the restaurants layout and lighting but I'll deal.
I went here with another couple and my husband. They ranted and raved about how it was the number 2 restaurant in Norfolk. Well, I dunno if I'm use to different standards, but I wasn't that impressed.
I ordered the special which was 20.95 and came with two sides. The piece of fish was the size of my palm. Maybe it's just me, but if I'm paying 20 bucks for a dinner plate, I'd like it to be bigger than that. The mashed potatoes were pretty good, and the mac n cheese was creamy. But don't let it sit, bc then it gets kinda lumpy and gross.
I'm going with the A-OK, because it pretty much describes my experience. I think it's a little overpriced, but the food was ok. Is it somewhere I'd go once a month, no prob not, but once in a blue moon, sure.
Amazing! Got the shrimp po-boy! mmm stacked with shrimp. Sides are really good. could be a little bigger but no worries there. Only issue i has was with our appetizer. It was a fried green tomato which tasted great but.....we only got one tomato, cut into 3 slices for $8.00 I was hoping for at least 2-3
Review Source:First off the place was ok looking and pretty clean and quiet. We ate around 4 PM on a Sunday afternoon. I ordered the seafood combo and my sister ordered the bluetip oysters and margaritas. The raw oysters and raw clams were gritty. The margaritas were like virgins with an absence of tequila. The crab legs were over cooked and dry. The service was decent and promised better margaritas at the 4 pm shift changed. They were just the same and we sent them back! I don't recommend you spend your hard earned money at this place, I've had much better for the money.
Review Source:She says: A.W. Shucks is consistently tasty food and good service. It's best to go during non-busy peak times, because it is very crowded. It can be a little hard to hear each other sometimes if you have a 6 top table because the bar area has a few TV's going and it can be noisy. However, A.W. Shucks is great for a crowd when you aren't sure what everyone in the group likes. If you have small kids, there is an outdoor patio, but if they are going to be rambunctious, I would say not to bring them because the inside is small and a bit close quarters.
I almost always order the nicoise salad with tuna, which is almost rare (I like it that way) with potatoes, olives, green beans and iceberg lettuce. (I try to avoid gluten and dairy and this salad is great for that, or the paleo or primal diets.) They have Front Porch wine, which is hard to find. It's a very sweet white wine and I think it's about $5 a glass. I used to order their po boys in my pre-gluten avoidance days and they are excellent. The bread is crunchy and sometimes a little hard, but these are some good eats.
They have a brunch menu which is from 11-4pm on Sundays. I try to avoid gluten and dairy, so I ordered the steak and eggs, which is $10.95 and 5 ounces of Hereford steak and 2 eggs and either potatoes or grits. Steak was very tasty done medium rare as I requested; eggs were good, and I didn't really want the potatoes, but I tasted them and they were good, too. We were there rather late (2pm), and the place was filling up, but we got a seat immediately. Quite a few older couples with teenagers were there and it appeared they'd just gone to church. Looks like everyone likes this place. The owners also own Tortilla West and part of the restaurant Chow, and maybe even The New Belmont (unconfirmed).
He says: The food's always great. Sometimes there's a wait. Their ribeye steak is, surprisingly, one of the best in Norfolk. Good variety of burgers; all of them I've tried have been tasty. The famous $9.99 meatloaf is worth twice what it costs.
The first time we dined at A.W. Shucks was two years ago when we were house hunting in the area. Â We loved it then and we still love it now. Â Silly us, we continued to be like two totally disoriented people trying to find the place, it's hidden and I'm glad. Â We got there early, 5:30, and were hoping for quick service since we had plans for the evening after dinner. Â We were seated immediately on the patio where the heavy plastic windows had been close up, starting to get a chill in the air, and we were quite comfortable.
Two martinis, 1/2 doz Pleasure Point oysters on the shell (delicious) scallop meal, crab meal and a beer.....we were out of there in an hour and we weren't rushing.  Service was quick and friendly, thank you Jacqueline.  Cole slaw was boring and mostly white, scallops weren't seared properly (Gordon Ramsey would have a fit with this) and there was some sand in them.  On the good side the crab and scallop portions were very large and  those Hush Puppies are to die for as was the broccoli and Crab Shucks.
It's very difficult to find so don't bother.....I don't like waiting in a line.
With tax: Â $81.23
This place is kind of tucked back over there, I'd never even noticed it before. Â We were actually headed for Mexican food, but I saw this place out of the corner of my eye as we got out of the car. Â I had seen it mentioned several times on Yelp, but had never hunted it down. Â This time, it found us.
First off, great music (found out it was Sirius XM 1st Wave). Nice mix of folks in for lunch. Â As we sat down, a plate of fried everything went past. Â Smelled amazing. Â My wife went with the Fish and Chips, I ordered the Bacon Cheddar Burger (see pic). Â Both very happy with our selections. Â
Our service was great, fast, and helpful. Â I liked the atmosphere, very relaxed and comfortable. Â Nice beer selection, and decent pricing on drinks. Â We will be back.
Returned with the hubs for lunch. Ordered the buffalo shrimp (succulent and plentiful), oyster poboy (always delicious), and crabcakes (very unique). It always irks me when people say 'oh yeah the best crabcakes are at x" and names some random, non relevant place, because really crabcakes are....cakes...and who doesn't like a crabcake? But in this case, AW Shucks may single-handedly "take the cake" for the best crabcake in town. For reals. It's not like any crabcake I've ever had, it's kind of almost like you're NOT eating a crabcake. As always, AW Shucks leaves me wanting more....
Review Source:One of the cool things about being "the food guy" at work is that lots of people either ask me where I'm going for lunch or to suggest a good place for this or that. I also get to take my co-workers around to some of my regular haunts and that's just what I did Tuesday afternoon.
A lot of us do burgers for lunch. They're quick, easy to make and frankly they're damn good. One of my buddies wanted to try something new and I thought 'Dude's never been to AW Shucks', so that's where we went.
I changed my game up a little and went with a dozen raw oysters on this trip. They were large shells and there wasn't a bad oyster in the mix. My co-worker had the bacon cheeseburger which he described as one of the best burgers he's ever had. All I could do was agree with him. The burgers at AW Shucks are really a best kept secret and probably my favorite in the downtown area.
All in all another great lunch!
Great place. Good food, good service, accommodating for kids. Hush puppies are fantastic as is the Mac'n Cheese. Nice selection of beers too. There are few "musts" for me when I am in VA Beach/Norfolk area and this place is on that list. What they lack in decor they make up for in great food and great service. Very enjoyable place.
Review Source:Hard to find. Â Small sign. Â We ordered three different types of oysters and two did not taste very fresh. Â My friend's crab cake was good but his hush puppies were just balls of grease (old fryer grease yuck). Â My fried flounder was a half a filet fried in the same old dirty grease but the broccoli was fresh and not overcooked and the mac and cheese passable (not terrific as the waiter said). Â Service was good but if it's busy not worth the wait.
Review Source:One of my favorite places to go when I am on work travel in Norfolk. Came in here on a Tuesday night with some co-workers to grab some beers and some dinner. It was crowded and there was no table space, so we walked up to the bar and luckily got 3 stools at the bar. And I'm glad we did, because it made it oh so easy to order some beers. And they have A LOT of beers. A great selection that I honestly wasn't expecting to find in Norfolk. And decent prices too. As for the food, I went with a oyster po-boy which was large and delicious. Not as good as the ones I used to get in Pascagoula, but pretty good, and filling. This will definitely be included on my list of can't miss places when staying in Norfolk.
Review Source:I love seafood, fresh, raw, broiled, seared, anything but fried. A buddy recommended this place, so I figured I'd try it. The place was fairly busy, with groups waiting for a table when I walked in at about 6 PM on a Saturday evening. I walked up and sat at the bar and ordered within 5 minutes. The bartender had my beer in front of me in less than 60 seconds, and a half dozen Bluepoints, cracked right in front of me in about 2 minutes. It only took me about 5 minutes to slurp down the oysters, and my ancho seared sea scallops in an acorn squash, covered in an awesome spiced bourbon cider sauce and some cous-cous underneath. The service was awesome, the food was delectable, and a very homey atmosphere. Love this place!
Review Source:Where to start with this place. Â Tucked away in downtown norfolk , One of my favorite spots in norfolk. Â Fresh seafood, awesome oyster selection, awesome appetizers ( try the fried stuffed jalapenos), extensive drink selections,
uh-mazing entrees!! Â Reasonably priced , Yu really cant go wrong at this place.
I really enjoy the food here! I have been twice & thought it was very tasty & reasonably priced both times. I had lived in ghent for a couple years and always forgot about this place due to its somewhat hidden location...
My first experience was meeting mt brother after work for some beers and food. I had the fried fish sandwich & mac & cheese. On my way to work the next day, I dropped my leftovers box in the parking lot and it fell out onto the concrete. It was so good, I dusted it off and still ate it anyway!
I recently dined there with some girlfriends & ordered the scallops sauteed in butter. I chose their amazing mac & cheese and the tomato/feta salad as my sides. Yummm I ate it all up!
Decent priced, fast service, delicious food =)
Eh. Â Had lots of high hopes for this restaurant as its known by locals as one of the must go. Â The wait time suggests its a popular place. I must not have had the best pick. Â I chose the bread and butter, crab dip, fried shrimp, crab cake, and bread pudding. Â
The bread was done well... Didn't care for the honey butter. Â Just didn't taste well.
The crab dip was way under par and disappointing. Â The serving size was too small. Â It was served Luke warm with the cheese on top too hard and never really blending well in undersized serving for my group of five. The flavor had too much garlic and shallots. Â Not enough sherry but plenty of crab.
The entree was unimpressive. Â The shrimp was fried and for too long. The batter was bland and unimportant. it's the thicker kind of batter that hurts the roof of your mouth. the crab cake had lots of crab but not lots of flavor and it was over cooked. Â
I would come back for the bread pudding. I think she said it was made from Krispy Kreme doughnuts... Â Wonderful. Â Hahahaha. Â
All in all,it wasn't worth the wait. Â Not going to get a second visit from me.
As far as seafood goes, this is the best I've had in the Norfolk area. Everything is fresh and delicious! They have a great selection of draft beers that are ever-changing. Expect to wait if you go at dinner time on a weekend, but it's worth the wait!
Both times while we were waiting, a waitress came out into the waiting room and took drink orders from us so we would have something to sip on, we were very impressed by this. The service has always been very friendly and helpful. Prices are good for what you get. I will definitely be back!
I went with my family for a late lunch around 330pm on a Sunday. Â We got some oysters on the half shell for appetizers, which was were OK. Â I'm used to the fresh local oysters in SF, so these didn't blow me away. Â I did have some tomato and crab chowder, which was decent. Â It was mainly a tomato broth with some vegetables, and then topped with lump crab meat and scallions. Â
I split two orders with my sister. Â The first item I tried was the grouper, served with garlic green beans and rice pilaf. Â The grilled grouper portion was tiny, but tasty. Â I also had some of the oyster po' boy & fries, which was good and decently sized oysters. Â Remoulade was great. Â
The broiled crab cake sandwich, was oversized and was a hit. Â The seafood bounty. (fried) came with fish, shrimp, scallops and oysters. Â Can't really go wrong with freshly fried seafood! Â The portion is rather large and it's a good item to split. Â This place is a very casual seafood restaurant with good service. Â Look for the blue shack!
I went here recently for the first time. This casual seafood restaurant has a fantastic selection of seafood dishes at extremely reasonable prices. There is an excellent variety and a sizable menu of specials and fresh catches that can be prepared in a variety of ways. The raw bar selection and oyster menu is also good. The atmosphere is fun and relaxed, and there is a good draft beer menu. This will absolutely be my top choice of places to go for a quality seafood dinner at a good price, and the place I take out-of-town visitors looking for seafood. Â
I had a special- blackened sheepshead filet with a tomato cream sauce over Brussels sprouts and purple potatoes- that was phenomenal. They even made the sprouts taste good! Â I can't wait to eat here again.
Tried this place today and I was really impressed. Â
First off, it was a little hard to find on my gps. Â It's actually up 22nd a little. Â I was greeted immediately by thos hostess who was still setting up since it just opened. Â I sat at the bar since I was by myself and the bartender set me up with a great beer I hadn't tried. Â I think I counted 8 beers on tap and another 20 in the bottle.
The menu was pretty straight forward. Â It was easy to find the apps and the raw bar and the burgers. Â I had 2 items off the raw bar and 1 of the apps. Â All were amazing and the old bay wings were wings. Â They weren't buffalo wings like most so I loved it even more.
Look forward to eating here again to upgrade my 4 Stars to 5
First .. because this is pretty awesome .. They allow dogs in the covered patio.
Now on to the food. I have been meaning to check this place out and finally did. I got to sample the calamari which was ok for me. Salt. Just a tiny bit of salt goes a long way. The pesto aioli was outstanding but only if you like pesto. I love pesto.
I ended up getting the shrimp and grits for lunch. It was a modern version of a classic southern dish. Instead of smooth buttered grits they were little fried triangles. Think deep fried polenta. Now switch the corn meal out for grits. Interesting .. though for me, I would probably keep with the original because I love me some grits.
The shrimp in this dish was fantastic. Totally cooked just right. The sausage was flavorful and spicy and just brought the dish together.
I can't wait to come back and try to oysters.
I live in newport news, va and when I'm craving some friend oysters or good seafood, I would be willing to drive 45 minutes to get some good grub. I usually get the Fried Oyster, Oyster Stew, and Bounty Platter. I try to get their other dishes to get the most out of the place and I have yet to be disappointed. Decent prices for the alcohol too. I usually get blue moon in a bottle for $3.75 if I'm not mistaken. Definitely not bad but they always have specials.
Don't let the outside of their restaurant steer you away. I was a little skeptical myself but when you go inside it is definitely a lot better and not what I expected when I stepped in.
Upon arrival at A.W Shucks I was very surprised that they were located at what appeared to be the very back corner of a strip mall in a run down sorta area. Â The exterior is reminiscent of resturant shack I would expect to find somewhere on the beach. Â However I was determined to keep an open mind and proceeded in.
This place doesnt take reservations and apparently is very busy most nights. Â We had to wait awhie so while we did, we had a few drinks at the bar. Â They offer a huge beer selection,( lots a micro brewery offerings), as well as a surprisingly good selection of wines. Â The bar is very cozy, homey and welcoming. Â I was very impressed.
When we were finally sat at our table and looked over the menu I was surprised by a few different things, some good and some bad.  I was very disapppointed to see that this place charges 1.75 for basic bread and butter  Really?  I have a huge pet peeve with resturants that do this.  Its such a tacky and unclassy thing to do. However at the same time the overall prices on the dishes were very resonable if not down right cheap for the size and quality of the offerings. Â
We ordered the Greek salad to start of with. Â I was surprised, that they chose a regular iceburg lettuice. Â It didnt taste bad but I thought is just a poor choice of lettucie. Â I was very pleased however with the surpring amount of fresh feta cheese, and olives, cucumbers etc that was included. Â THe salad was huge and was enough to feed 2 people as a starter. Â Overall the salad was very tasty, however I feel that the choice of lettuice really steps down the feel and taste of this salad.
For a main, my friend and I shared the large combo raw bar.  For the price, I thought there was a generous offering of raw oysters, shrimp, crab legs, fresh local corn on the cob, hush puppies, roasted potatoes and kielbalsa.  It was definitly enough to feed 2 people.  Our other friends ordered the crab cakes, which were by far the best crabcakes Ive had.  They were huge, mostly crab with very little filler.  The french fries served with it were beer battered and were a perfect pairing.  Last but not least we also ordered a side of mac and cheese and it was out of this world.  It appeared to be made of white cheeses with some breadcrumbs mixed it.  It was goey, cheesey and just plain deliscious.  I highly reccomend  the mac and cheese as a side!
Overall I was very pleased with my experience at A.W. Â The service was fast and friendly and what this place lacks on the outside, it certainly makes up for on the inside. Â This is DEFINITLY a place worth checking out if you ever find yourself in the area, and if you're a local, I highly suggest you get to this place stat and check it out. Â .
Seriously an awesome place to eat.
I only recently discovered my love of oysters, and even more recently discovered that that love is conditional, not all oysters are equal, not all oyster bars are equal. A.W. Shucks is superior.
My husband and I love going here, and I always take friends/clients here when they are in town. It's a crowd pleaser.
The oysters are always fresh shucked, cold and yummy. I love the welfleets in particular -- the sweetest of the 6-7 choices they always have. The dinner specials are on par with the best restaurants in Norfolk, alway a great selection of seasonal seafood and veggies.
I also ALWAYS have the caprese salad while I'm there. I know, at an oyster place?! Well, all of their food is amazeballs, but the fresh, fat tomatoes with soft mozzarella is a great combo here and for some reason their balsamic is sweeter than most.
My coworkers usually get a po-boy. Those things are monsters, get a half or plan to share with someone.
I would recommend this place to anyone, anytime. I have never had a bad meal, oyster or drink there.
We liked it so much, we came here twice! Â (Ummm...that sounds...nevermind).
After arriving in Norfolk, we first stopped by here for a late dinner. We wanted to sit outside and enjoy the warm evening, but it was already pretty packed. So we settled for a bar table inside after a short wait. The garlic sautéed "Plate O' Shrimp" with sides of mac-n-cheese and coleslaw were all excellent choices. Â
Then we dropped by a couple of days later for some mid-afternoon appetizers/drinks. We decided on a 1/2 dozen of raw oysters and fried calamari. The oysters were awesome and I'm sorry we didn't order a dozen instead. Â The calamari, however, was slightly overcooked and rubbery. Eck. We also found they have a decent selection of drinks at the bar: wine, beer drafts and bottles that will suit almost anyone's tastes.
A.W. Shucks is a definite must-stop for any seafood lover, whether you come once or twice (okay, I'm done).
Thank you Yelp and Yelpers for leading me to discover truly, unforgettable, local seafood.
Roger B.'s review along with Emily R's direction gave me the best seafood meal I've ever consumed.
Let me start by saying - I don't care for seafood. Shrimp, crab, lobster.. those crustaceans are so bland on it's own whereas you can cook a piece of beef on it's own with no seasoning and produce a beautiful steak. Get my point?
Well, If figured if I was in a town known for it's fresh seafood, I'd better eat some seafood.
I had oysters so fresh and cleaned so well there wasn't a speck of sand.
The tomato crab chowder was love at first spoonful. How does one get so much flavor into one tiny spoon? I also had the oystey po' boy. Now this was a bit tricky. There were 5-6 jumbo fried oysters on top of a bed of slaw, lettuce and bread. I tried to close the sandwich and as I was about to take a big bite - half my sandwich fell out, splat! on the table. I'd lost 2 precious oysters. Â My server came over, cleaned it right up and I happily continued my meal. 3 minutes later, he came out with a side plate of two freshly fried oysters, a small side of slaw and lettuce so that I could replace the chunk of goodness that'd fallen out. I was so touched and impressed by his level of attentiveness and serviceability.
In addition to spectacular dishes, the menu was extensive and the prices were inexpensive. I'd even call it "cheap" by NY standards.
After a meal at Aw Shucks, nothing I ate at VA Beach tasted nearly as satisfying. Seafood  just isn't the same anywhere else.
This place is awesome! Â Had lunch here, and I must say I was quite impressed. Â I had some grilled tuna and it was cooked perfectly. Â They have awesome sides and a pretty impressive menu overall.
Great beer menu as well, they even have a lot of local stuff. Â I really recommend this place, even if you've got someone in your party that doesn't like seafood - the menu is really diverse.
Very impressed with the staff here too - very knowledgable. Â I will definitely be returning!
My wife and I went to Aw Shucks last night for a dinner date. I was very surprised to find that the wait for an inside table was 25 minutes on a Thursday night. Thursday night? Who knew? Well, apparently everyone (including the mayor, I saw him walk out while we were eating). While we were waiting for a table outside to be cleaned one of the bistro tables in the waiting area lounge came open so I asked for that and the hostess said no problem.
I already knew I was going to get the po boy sandwich before I got there, the only question was if it were to be oyster or shrimp. I like shrimp much better than oysters, but oysters are the specialty at this place so I was conflicted. Deeply conflicted, a true seafood crisis. The waitress solved my culinary dilemma by saying if I got the full instead of the half sandwich they could put oysters on one part and shrimp on the other. Brilliant! I requested extra remoulade to dip the fries in at the recommendation of another Yelper (thanks james b from VB!).
Even though they were very busy the food came really fast. When our plates arrived I thought I would be bringing some of it home because there was so much food. First of all let me say that these were the best fried oysters I'd ever had, very large and breading was crispy but not too heavy. This sandwich was stuffed with enough seafood for two sandwiches! The tomato, lettuce, and coleslaw were all very fresh. And the remoulade was on the side. At first I had to clear some fries and oysters out of the way, so I dipped them in remoulade which was very good and spicy.
There are seriously more oysters than you can possibly handle in the sandwich with all the other toppings, but I gave it a go anyway. I slowed down a bit when I ran out of sweet tea (I wasn't upset, our waitress looked to be handling about half the restaurant and she was amazing!), but just grabbed a sip of my wife's water and kept mowing through that hoagie of seafood and dripping (Louisiana style, of course) remoulade goodness. I started with the oyster side, and then proceeded to the shrimp side. I have to say that the oyster wins hands down. So next time I can just get the half oyster po boy.
To compare, I had the shrimp po boy at Surfrider in Greenbrier not long ago. Those shrimp looked like they were the frozen variety that you heat up in the toaster oven. And the oysters, wow so awesome!
My wife had the crabcake sandwich, after verifying that it came with fries. Yes, the fries are that good! Anyway, the crabcake was at least an inch thick, breaded and deep fried and very good. Or so she says, because I didn't get any of it! That's ok, I was too busy with my own sandwich to even think about it. And I will say that normally I don't get oysters, fried or otherwise and partly because they really don't look appetizing to me. But I will at this place! As a matter of fact I might not be able to have a po boy anywhere else. Â Seriously! Aw Shucks, I think I love ya!
