White Diamond is another NJ classic, that a lot of people don't know about. My father took me here a few times when I was a kid, and I felt like it was always a treat. The burgers come however you want them, meaning you can get cheese, onions, pickles on the side, double, etc. The place is fairly small, so either get the burgers or what ever food you order to go, or go with a minimal amount of people. The burgers taste great! Just try it and you will be hooked for ever!
Review Source:I went to the White Diamond today to try it out. Â As most of the reviews said, the food was good. Â The service wasn't great, but I also wouldn't say they were rude, more direct, and slightly rushed, but the place was crowded, and there was a line, so it made sense that they would hurry things along. Â I found the place to be kind of quaint. Â Dingy is probably a bit strong, the counter tops were worn down, but clean. Â
As for the food, I ordered 2 small cheeseburgers, an order of fries, and a large soda. Â In total it cost me $7.60. Â I had red a review in New Jersey Monthly that said the sliders were some of the best in the state. Â They were pretty good. Â Larger than typical sliders, about the size of a McDonald's cheeseburger, but infinitely better. Â I thought for 1.55 each, they were excellent. Â The fries were good, well cooked fries.
The one downside, is that the place is small, and has limited seating, so we decided to bring it back to the office.
I think of this place in my dreams since I live 1000 miles away for the past 6 years, but have gone to it for over 25 years. This was part of my youth where my dad would get a bag of mini-burgers and fries and they would be called "rat" burgers. Then this is always the perfect place for late night or some day after some partying. The taylor ham and cheese... YUM!!! This is as good as it gets when it comes to NJ dives.
Review Source:I live only 5-10 minutes from here. Â This place is delicious. Â Yeah, I'll admit the workers aren't all that friendly. But I still had to give it 5 stars. Â It's so ridiculously cheap, and their burgers are like nothing I've ever had before. Â I only come here 1-2 times per year. Â I really need to start coming more often.
Review Source:You gotta love the classic NJ diner look.
I had the small cheeseburgers "sliders". They were tasty as were the crispy crinkle cut fries.
I was in the area for a golf outing, and knew I had to stop here on the way home. Well I stopped here after having a burger at nearby Molly maguires. I saved some room for White Diamond.
I was a little annoyed that the girl taking my order rolled her eyes when I forgot to tell her I wanted a soda. Other than that I'm glad I stopped.
Definitely would add this to the list for a NJ burger tour along with the White Manna/ Mana.
My husband introduced me to this institution when we met...we came here not on our first date...but when it didn't matter and comfort was all we were seeking. Â Since then...we have frequented this place on not "gym" days and whenever we got the crave, remembered what White Castle did to your stomach without the taste, wanted the taste and found ourselves here! I've also ventured here in college...I went to Rutgers, hence, the grease trucks are my top echelon on grease food...this comes as a very close second, if you didn't have the grease trucks!
Two things they changed which prevented a perfect score...
1. They changed their buns on the small burgers - they are now more like shiny cardboard cotton balls...instead of squished, yummy buns of love soaking up the 1950s grease!
2. Their workers. I vote recovering convicts from Rahway prison...not teens. Â No teen can yell at you for ordering a burger wrong. Teens chew gum and hate their job - I need angry grease lovers!!!
I know a few locals who say their burgers used to be $0.12ea and if you buy 10 for $0.10ea...that is not the price anymore...but $20 can feed a family!
You should come here to check it out once...and twice if you can appreciate this lil jewel...few things to watch out for...it's at a busy intersection and a hell of a good time to try to get into the tiny driveway...it's grease food people, don't venture far from home...don't expect service or service without attitude...do expect grease...do expect recovering and/or drunks...do expect greasy aroma oozing from you and making everyone jealous and hungry who smells ya...
Best "rat" burger around! That's what we used to call the burgers but they are really good and I think even made with real meat :-) Been going since highschool. Another Clark staple. Growing up in Clark it was a privilege to go here and something I looked forward to when home from college. I'm so happy it is still around and I hope it's around for another 60 years. Since I've gotten older I can't eat that kind of greasy food all that often but when I do go it is soo worth the stomach pains! It's definitely the place to go after a night out of drinking.
Review Source:This place is an institution. Â It's been here forever. Â It's five minutes from my house, which is convenient and it's very fast and efficient service. Â It is the perfect drunk/hangover food. Â The only problem is reeking of fried food when you leave - it permeates your clothes and skin like nothing I've ever seen. Â My boyfriend and I came here today for lunch - he got two cheeseburgers and fries. Â I opted for a hot dog (grilled bun!) and fries. Â The fries are greasy goodness. Â It's fun to sit and watch the cars go by from the window. Â Cheap and delicious.
Review Source:I really liked this place for a quick bite. They seem like they have been making the same thing since the 40's & 50's, which is pretty neat. It's a nice little slice of old time Americana. Basic menu of hamburger sliders, hotdogs, and french fries... way better then going to McD's or Burger KIng.
Review Source:Third stop on our tour led us to the town of Clark for sliders at White Diamond. Apparently, all burger shacks at the start of the trend had clean imagery tied in with their names hence the "white diamond", "white manna" and of course "white castle".
The restaurant is clean and quaint. It transports you to a time of greasers and boppers. You're actually expecting the Fonz to come walking in to give you a quick noogie.
This was my second favorite burger joint on the tour. The burgers were fatter than the first three and bigger in size. Seasoned nicely and seemed like a distant cousin of a White Castle burger (mostly because of the onions). The prices were very good here too. Definitely worth the drive over.
Nice, greasy, old fashioned burgers. Â My personal favorite is the bacon cheeseburger. Â I used to stop at WD all the time on my back from shows at Birch Hill (and later Starland Ballroom) when I was in High school. Good memories. Â It's got that townie scene going on which is a little bit annoying but it's not annoying enough to miss out on those burgers. It's definitely refreshing to see WD still doing its thing, even with the McDonald's and Chilli's in close proximity.
Review Source:I've passed this diner my whole life and maybe stopped by once a decade ago. I've come to it so seldomly because its located on a busy corner at the intersection of two major roads -- hard to get into, hard to find parking, hard to get out of.
So one day, I got out my bike and biked there. I'm glad I did. The place is really like a time warp -- all the way to the pressed tin ceiling, the chrome counter and the "Night Hawks" Hopperesque windows. Newspaper clippings, old road signs from the '50s inside.
And the food -- it was worth the trip. The food was kind of the way I imagine burgers used to be. A pattie of meat, pretty thin, set on a steam-softened Kaiser roll, served "California-style," which means with lettuce and tomato, on a paper plate. Mixed in were fried onions, and a slice of cheese, which seemed to have melted away into the pattie.
Some people might not like it because it wasn't a thick slab of meat -- see my picture -- there was a lot of bread taste, but cheese and onions and grease too, so I thought it was pretty good.
On the side, a small dish of fries on a china plate. Fries were crinkle cut, crispier than I'm used to, but very fresh -- clearly not sitting under an infrared light for the past hour. Tasted like warm potato chips on the outside. And a large Pepsi.
It was a step better than McDonald's, and a little pricier -- $6.95 total.
This little diner has been at its present location since 1947, although the stainless-steel sided building was rebuilt about six years ago. It is currently surrounded by a Burger King, a McDonald's, a Wendy's, a Chili's and a bunch of pizza joints, but business has not slowed.
If you have a craving for a greasy, double hamburger with grilled onions and cheese on a steamed hard roll, these folks have perfected it. When you pick it up to take a bite, hold it away from yourself, because the grease drips out, and could ruin your shirt.
The menu is pretty much limited to items that can be prepared on a flattop grill or deep fryer, such as egg sandwiches, grilled cheese, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, etc.
They are open 24 hours a day. Cash only--no credit cards accepted.
I have fond memories of ending up here around 6:00AM after an all-nighter with my wild high school friends. We used to call it, "The Ratburger", but only out of affection.
