pretty fresh, OK service, but this place has really gone down in terms of quality/quantity in regards to price. when i first started coming here five years ago, the wild wasabi boat would have my 3 friends and i about to burst from fullness. we went back this past wknd for a bday dinner and requested the wild wasabi boat for 8 people (a single boat is for 4 people so this was equivalent to two boats). the amount of food that came out was laughable. i'm not sure whom they think they're tryying to fool, because i remember ordering the exact same thing even a year ago and it was about 1.5x the amount that they presented to us on saturday. maybe they thought that by putting the order on wooden boards instead of an actual boat we wouldn't notice. uhh, yeah, i'm not stupid nor am i blind.
it's still pretty reasonably priced for a place in NJ, but i don't like feeling scammed.
Amazing food!
Seaweed soup was very tasty! Â
My bf had a rough time with his chopsticks and almost flung them across the room in a childish fit of anger. Â He ended up eating his spicy tuna rolls with his hands. ( he said they were delish!)
I on the other hand had no issue with my chopsticks!
Ordered 2 fab slices of white tuna
1 eel hand roll (no rice)
1 spicy tuna hand roll (no rice)
All were excellent.
This is hands down my favorite sushi place near home. Â The sushi/sashimi is ALWAYS fresh and yummy. Â The fact that I can get brown rice with my sushi that isn't hard, mushy or bland makes this worth the trip for me. Â I've been a number of times over the years and will keep going back.
Review Source:Was there yesterday, the place was packed. Â Definitely one of the better sushi places in the area. Â Their sashmi deluxe is great. Â Good portion. Â I generally order this. Â Even their tempura appetizer portions are entree portion compare to some of the other places. Â Great place for sushi.
Review Source:Have been driving past Wild Wasabi for years and decided to try them last night for the first time. Â I found the restaurant lacking on three counts, one of them a whopper!
First the service, which was aloof to indifferent. Â Not a make or break issue, especially if the sushi was memorable...but it wasn't.
Second, and despite the "lessons" by Chery K below, the individual sushi portions were minuscule...and not because there was a larger percentage of fish to rice. Â They were just small at the same price per piece as half a dozen other sushi restaurants in a twenty minute radius.
But here's the "Whopper". Â I brought my own half bottle of Sake because they did not have a liquor license like 90% of NJ restaurants, that's why we have so many BYOB's in NJ, Â and the waiter told me they charge a $5 corkage fee! Â I'm not even sure this is legal...if they don't have a license then how can they charge for alcohol? Â Surely it wasn't for the two water tumblers they gave us to drink from. Â My Sake was a 300ml half bottle that sells for $8 Â and I was forced to pay a $5 corkage fee...
...Wild Wasabi  get's the "knucklehead Award" for being the only BYO in NJ that charges a corkage fee!  Keep driving another 5 minutes and go to Mt Kisco Sushi in Closter!
Lesson in Sushi #1: A roll is made of mainly two things: raw fish and rice. Â
Lesson in Sushi #2: Sushi places who are interested in making a lot of  $$$ and not interested in providing customers with a true raw fish experience load their sushi and rolls with more rice than fish.  Think a 1:4 ratio.  Only a quarter fish and three quarters rice. Â
Lesson in Sushi #3: MOST local sushi places adhere to generalization made in Lesson #2. Â Rarely will you find more fish than rice in a roll.
MOST IMPORTANT LESSON IN SUSHI: Wild Wasabi has that ratio BACKWARDS. Â They PACK their rolls with fish so that there is only about a quarter rice and THREE QUARTERS OF FISH. Â Now that's a lot of fish and one awesome freaking roll. Â Definitely getting your money's worth here!
I've had rolls at MANY fancy shmancy sushi restaurants and no place has Wild Wasabi beat when it comes to the amount of fish they pack into their rolls. Â Frish is fresh too! Â This place is definitely my local go-to for sushi & rolls every time. Â Their hwe-duhp-bahp (basically, a huge mixed bowl of rice with various raw fish, veggies, and spicy sauce) has LOADS of raw fish in it. Best hwe-dup-bahp.
Here's another lesson: Â miso soup (seemingly easy peasy) is actually really difficult to get right. Â Their miso soup is fantastic. Â Good amount of seaweed, good amount of tofu, and the broth is just perfect. Â
Additionally, proof to me that it's GOTTA be good: I took a look at the pictures of customers on their walls, and I saw about 5 people I know. Â Including my very own cousin. Â Way to let me in on the local sushi roll secret, cuz.
