I'm only giving this place 3 stars because in my opinion, the food here is much more "Americanized" Chinese. Â For some reason the further you get from NYC, the harder it is to find really good Chinese food. Â My daughter and I shared the General Ching's chicken with pork fried rice. Â Although the chicken was fresh, the slices were way too big. Â The rice was good, but it didn't have any vegetables in it. Â We got the fried noodles to snack on before dinner. Â The duck sauce was so watered down, it got everywhere. Â
Although other reviewers claim this is the best Chinese food in town, I have to agree. Â But living throughout CT and NYC, I've had so much better.
Sketch-y part of town.
But...
GO FOR IT! Â This place was awesome. Â I was in some deep crazy way for some americanized chinese food and I read the Yelp reviews (THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! - I really gotta compliment EVeRYONE who yelped before me) Â and lo and behold...this place was the BOMB.
Portions were OUT OF THIS WORLD HUGE. Â Crazy big, ya'll. Â So what if everything came out at one time? Â I just ate and ate until I almost cried.
We had sooooo much food left over, it was insane.
Everything was fresh and everything that was supposed to be crunchy was. Â I love that.
I had to disagree with anyone who put down the service. Â There were 2 women working, and they were working hard. Â They were friendly and I wanted to hug them because they were pretty attentive even tho it was busy.
The only downfall was.......
Get a load of this....
We all had the same fortune in our 3 cookies.
GO to this place if you want good fast chinese food. Â Now I'm hungry again! Â dagnabit.
Not bad for a Chinese restaurant so far from Chinatown! Their chow fun was pretty close to the real thing, and the portion was big enough to last me days (I'm a fan of having/ eating leftovers). It did take close to forever for the food to come out, but if ever I crave Chinese food while around Springfield, I definitely won't hesitate to drop by Wong Wok.
Review Source:This is the best take-out Chinese place that I've found in my 4 years in Springfield. I've never dined in the restaurant, and echo the sentiments I've read in other reviews about allowing extra time to pick-up your order during busy periods. The portions are very large, similar in size (and quality) to Foodworks (Worcester) and Charlton Chinese Take-out for those from Central MA. Great bang-for-the-buck.
Review Source:OMFG I love this place. Living in the south and eating their sad attempt at good chinese food forces me to close my eyes everytime I try to swallow the food here and psych myself into thinking im actually eating Wong Wok.
I love this place, especially the proximity to my parents house. We go here everytime I'm home because we all have our favorite dishes in our fam, and love the scorpion bowls. I grew up on this chinese place and it will forever be one of my favorites. The portions are ridiculous, it is always hot, and the service 9/10 is great. Great for takeout or dining in... when you get takeout, they give you a humongous bag of those fried crunchy things and always hook you up with sauces and fortune cookies. My mouth is watering just thinking about this place. Can't wait to come home in January on a snowy night and have some Wong Wok to my face.
Very Americanized food, but excellent value- the portions are huge! This restaurant mostly does take-out business, I've never actually eaten at the restaurant. The lady at the front desk is brusque but efficient, food is ready in no time. I recommend the curry noodles, and anything typical of Americanized Cantonese food... I wouldn't order the Szechuan stuff.
Review Source:Despite what this review says this place does not offer delivery. Unfortunately Yelp will not let me change the listing, meaning anyone who searches for businesses which deliver will have this business show up and will be very disappointed once they call.
Other than that the food is alright. It's on par with what you'd expect from a local chinese restaurant (although a bit dirty inside at times).
I've been a fan of Wong Wok since it opened. Anyone remember the sign slipup outside when it first opened? They had it say WONG KOK instead of Wong Wok? Always will be a part of my funny memories. :) I think this is a great Chinese food place, and it is my favorite in the area. Years ago it would have been Joy of the Wok (Boston Rd.). Ginger Blossom is a close second to Wong Wok now. I second what one person wrote about the tall, dark haired woman who works the front desk. She's been there since the beginning and is always a little rude and her attitude is off. Makes me wonder, does she own this place? She's always there and despite people voicing their complaints (here), she's still there. Anyway, you get big portions, love their pork fried rice! Whenever I go it's rarely busy, and there's always one person working the floor, busy or not. Two if it's REALLY busy. I'm a fan of this place, though, for sure.
Review Source:POSITIVES:
1. Portion size & Price : I Have to echo the other reviews here...This IS the best Chinese place in Springfield. The offer large food portions and the price hasn't fluctuated that much as long as I've been ordering from them.
2. Clean Kitchen : Had a friend who knew a local health inspector who said their kitchen was very clean and got their seal of approval.
3. Best Tasting Chinese Food in Western Mass : My usual is the chicken fried rice and I have to sometimes the chicken fingers. The rice is nice and dark brown not that wimpy light brown pale yellow rice, the dark dark brown rice. It can get a tad greasy but it is so flavorful you tend not to notice until you look at your napkin. The dumplings are also good. I don't however care for their teriyaki beef which is a shame because done right it's one of my favorite things to order of a Chinese takeout menu.
NEGATIVES :
1.) In house service : I have only actually eaten IN the actual restaurant twice and both times I was less than impressed. There was only one woman cleaning and taking orders at different tables and it was a bit hard to communicate.
2.) Ordering on a busy night : Like Thursday/Friday/Saturday. They almost never have my order ready when I get there even though I give it an extra 10 mins on top of the 15 mins they told me to wait. It is so busy I usually have to wait on the overly crowded bench near the door...however this should tell you how much business they get. Lots of customers = good food!
3.) The tall dark haired woman at the front desk : Now I must say she has always been cool to me personally but her attitude can definitely rub people the wrong way. She is abrupt, high strung, can be rude at times and likes to tell people's business if you're waiting and she feels chatty. However she keeps the place running pretty well...very organized. Can't say the same for the young girls they have working there at times.
4.) no delivery service
All in all despite the negatives this place still gets 5 stars from me.
SIDE NOTE : If you're sensitive to MSG in your food, this is a good place to eat. I find it hard to eat at most other Chinese restaurants because I inevitably get the MSG hangover. Have never had an issue here.
I do not like Chinese food. I like Wong Wok, but I also really like Ginger Blossom (aside from their sushi) their chinese food rivals Wong Wok's. Wong Wok has the delicious complimentary wonton chips they give you before your meal with a delicious sweet orange sauce. I'm sorry I don't know the name of it, even though I should, but I never eat Chinese. I fell in love with their chicken dumplings but I tried the vegetable as well but for both the vegetable and meat (pork) they use a much thicker dough which sounds like a good thing but I personally think it tastes sometimes pastey and old. The chicken dumplings are delicious though. I thought the crab rangoon were tasty too, they're huge and we had a few that came with a combination meal but supposedly it's about 5 dollars or so for 12 of them? That would be ridiculous as I could hardly finish 2 with the rest of the food.
Review Source:I'm sorry that I couldn't give Wong Wok five stars, like all those who yelped before me.
My husband, a friend, and I went to Wong Wok last night (a Tuesday) and it was pretty packed; however, most of the people were there to pick up their take away instead of dining in. Aside from our table, there were five other tables with people.
The portions were absolutely ginormous. With the exception of the spring rolls, the food was stellar. The service was incredibly slow, which is the reason they don't get a full five stars. The one old woman, bless her heart, who was serving every table was run absolutely ragged while the woman who ran the front made no effort I could see to help her out. As a result, we ultimately waited over 15 minutes to place our order. The food arrived at the perfect temperature, but all of our food come out at once (except for one dish, which came about about 5 minutes later,) and that took another 15 minutes.
Slow as it was, though, it was worth waiting for. There was plenty enough for a second meal!
I love Wong Wok. I moved to Cambridge Ma. and any time I find myself back home for any reason I ALWAYS stop and pick up a dinner combo for my Bro and there delicious mixed vegetables for myself. Â Let me explain, any time you order mixed Chinese vegetables at a Chinese restaurant you get watery flavorless steamed vegetables that float in awkward clear liquid. Now go to the Wong and you will find the absolute best mixed vegetables in the world. Sweet, flavorful, crunchy, Â oh my god go to Wong Wok right now if you can. I am only describing the magic of the vegetables, the beef and broccoli is surreal, the chicken dishes have enormous portions and they have the perfect fried rice. Seriously, go somewhere else and eat the pork fried rice than go to Wong Wok and cry that you wasted stomach space on light soggy barely cooked fried rice.
I would seriously consider living in Springfield again merely to enjoy Wong Wok. Boston has nothing that even comes close to cutting it after you have experienced take out from Wong Wok. If you are close by you have to make this your spot (don't bother dinning in, why would you do that anyway?, Wong Wok is to be savored at home, ) to get all of your Chinese food.
Enjoy, You don't know how good you have it.
They may not be the prettiest to look at, though they're prettier than some, but Wong Wok is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Springfield and the greater Pioneer Valley. Â
Chinese takeout places are a dime a dozen in this city, and while the quality of some are passable, eating at any of them can be a crapshoot. Â For many years I'd trek out to Amherst to get sit-down-and-eat Chinese food--until my spot of choice suddenly closed--because of this fact. Â But with Wong Wok you always know what you're going to get; enormous portions that taste so good you'll want to clean your plate even if you're full.
Like any situation where the staff is primarily made up of immigrants or non-native English-speakers communication can sometimes be a little tricky with the Wong Wok wait-staff. Â But the servers always try to give their best to please their guests and they keep your water-glass full.
My usual order is the huge serving of chicken fingers, the heaping bowl of chicken fried rice and the overwhelming platter of General Tso's (I think they call it something else) chicken. Â But if you're on a budget, or you just don't want to have to take food home (although you still might have to because their portions are HUGE), you might want to opt for a combo plate. Â Yes, they serve a chicken fingers, "General's chicken" and fried rice combo.
Whatever you order though, there's no better place for Chinese food within the Springfield city limits, and if there is in any near-by town I don't want to know about it. Â Wong Wok is where it's at.
Wong Wok, in my opinion, has the best Chinese food in the area at a great price. All their dinner combos are great, they have the best barbecue spare ribs and friendly waitstaff.
My only criticism about Wong Wok is the crab rangoons. These used to be excellent, but as of late they've been hit or miss. Some days they're right on the money and other days they have a "burnt" taste as if they used old oil (or perhaps just an oil with a stronger natural flavor like sesame).
If you're in the Forest Park area and in the mood for some Chinese, I'd most definitely recommend Wong Wok above the others!
