This place is great! Besides being one of the driving forces behind the revival of the Birmingham music and radio scene, it  is also a great place to catch a show. This 2-in-1 venue offers a sound stage and a theatre-for large, loud shows, and smaller, more intimate shows respectively. They have a full service bar and there is not a bad seat in the house. Plus, happy hour is great daily. Visit Workplay and you're likely to fall in love with a band that will have you saying "I saw them before they got huge" in the near future.
Review Source:I went here earlier in the year to see a Duncan Sheik concert - and like others have said, it's a very small, intimate venue. The seating was great, the lighting and table/chair arrangement was good...and basically the entire experience was a great one. The loudness of the opening acts was a bit too much though (must be getting "old man" ears), but that was probably due to the performers' equipment settings, not the venue itself. Also, parking was painless and just across the street. It's also in a nice part of Birmingham's downtown area, so I didn't feel unsafe going to it/parking there, even though I went in and left after dark.
Review Source:Just went for one night and only got to go into the bar area. The show for the small venue was cancelled that night but the local female singer/guitar player ( Jessica "Jess "Meuse ) at the bar was wonderful. Rolled in from atlanta and met a very sweet woman named Robin who offered us free pizza from Rocky's and got me a free sample from the bartender of the local Ipa from "good people" which was wonderful. She told us about the Earthfest Festival at the "Avondale Brewing Company" that we went to on Sunday and had a blast!!! Robin also introduced us to the 2 super nice owners/brothers ( Tom and C. Clark Williams ) of Workplay. They actually gave us a private tour of the whole place even though the bar area was the only area open that night. The small venue space is amazing!!! I can't wait to go back and see a show here!!! Don't miss an opportunity to check out Workplay and hopefully see a show! Â This place is truly amazing. You might even run into Robin sitting at the bar. If you do, tell her that Rob and Heather from Atlanta say "Hi".
Review Source:Every show I've been to here has felt special and uniquely intimate. Â There's this sense of community you get from being in the audience here that you really won't find many other places -- and the musicians are almost always more willing, and even excited, to be a part of the Workplay community on nights that they perform.. it's really a pretty awesome thing. A big plus for me too is that ticket prices here are always reasonable, which you won't find easily anywhere else. And Birmingham, if you haven't been to a show here before, there are a lot of really good opportunities coming up! Workplay's website has a good list of events, or you can even find shows on the Birmingham Mountain Radio website, which is where I look.
Review Source:Awesome venue. Great acoustics. Small intimate setting. Â If you really love the artist playing and want a great seat without the hassle of arriving way early call ahead and reserve a table. 50 bucks for a two seat table. 100 for a four seat. Â You will not be disappointed. Â It allows you to relax and enjoy the show with an unobstructed view. Â Server will bring you your drinks and if you have to make a bathroom break your seat will be there when you get back. Â Also arrive whenever you want. If its reserved it will remain empty unless you show up. Â They even checked my ID to make sure it was us
Review Source:Workplay is one of the good things about Birmingham. Â It's small, but not too small. Â However, you have to arrive early to grab seats. Â I'm not a fan of standing crowds. Â The stage is very close, so you can comfortable see the artists. Â I met Alison Sudol (A Fine Frenzy) here...she wrote the sweetest note to me. Â It seems the artists that play here are very warm and love interacting with their fans. Â Workplay is definitely a venue to meet the band. Â Great for those of us that prefer smaller acts.
Review Source:I once touched Lucinda Williams here- that is a fact. Workplay has been the music-venue-du-jour since it opened, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. For famous acts, it provides an intimate space to connect with fans. For small acts, it feels like the big time. One of the best features of Workplay is its bar/venue space combination. You can literally just go to the bar there, and never enter the show.
But, should you have tickets, just carry your drink with you. The main space they use for concerts has an elevated stage, a large empty space in front, then two levels of balcony-type areas with various types of tables and chairs. There are no "assigned seats," so concert-goers can meander around, mingle with friends, and mosh to their hearts content.
It is this relaxed approach that allowed me to touch Lucinda- I lurked by the stage near the speaker for most of the show and, for the brief moment she wasn't playing or chasing shots with a beer (she's such a bad-a$$), she reached out to the crowd and BOOM- I made contact. It was thrilling. I'm pretty sure we could've touched Jakob Dylan had we tried hard enough, but we didn't.
I'm a fan.
Witnessed two very different shows here and enjoyed them both. Â One show was in the larger venue--a blackbox style stage/standing area. Â Not much to comment, pretty generic. Â
The smaller, more intimate venue is really special. Â For the show I attended (Jay Clifford), there were tables in front of the stage and two levels of seating with nice lighting and great sound. Â There were servers bringing around beer and wine every 15 minutes or so--perfect. Â Drinks are reasonable and the bar is really nice. Â
A truly great venue.
Saw Mogwai here. Â Live in Austin and they played a 2-3k capacity venue for more money. Â Saw them here with two friends and scored a side stage table next to the soundboard. Â Cocktail service at the tables is a plus and it was MAYBE 200 people there. Â Amazing sound, amazing service, amazing venue.
Review Source:A great place to see a show.
The ticket purchasing is online for everything if you so wish., or at the box office (only on show nights.) There are two spaces, the "theater" and the "soundstage." The theater is easily the best stage to see an act in Birmingham. The room is clean and sharp, with good acoustics and seating in the back/balcony. The floor is well-sized and the stage height/shape is just right. I love seeing shows here. The soundstage is a bigger square room in the back of the complex with a higher stage and it's all floor standing. It's definitely not short-people friendly like the theater, but it sounds good and can accommodate larger shows.
The exterior of WorkPlay is attractive and modern, and inside, details like a shiny clean bathroom are appreciated.
Some good acts book at WorkPlay, so check their calendar often.
We were here for the Hold Steady show last night. Â Great room . Â Great sound. Great service from the server. Â Not a bad seat in the place.
There is a large pit with tables around the perimiter . Â We had a comfortable table which was elevated and within 10 yards of the stage.
A huge bouncer is the sherrif of this place and seemed quite efficient at keeping the it under control. From my observations, if you are too sloppy drunk, they take away your legal to drink bracelet and replace it with a red "you can't drink at all" bracelet and put a big "X" on your other arn with a black marker. Â Then, if you screw up again, the big guy comes and throws you out. Â I like that two stage approach. Â I think that if I was setting there with a red bracelet on one arm and an X" on the other, I would probably reign it in a bit. Â But, some people insist on providing a nice side show.
We traveled from Atlanta for this show and the venue was excellent. We will be back.
I called Workplay several times trying to get in touch with an event planner for my upcoming wedding.  I wasnt able to get anyone on the phone after repeated attempts, so I emailed and finally got a response.  i set up an appt to meet with the planner.  This was important because i was flying in from California and would only be in town a few days to plan my wedding.  The day my flight touched down, I got a call from Workplay stating the planner was sick and wouldn't be able to meet with me the next day.  So, the day and a half before I got ready to leave I made one last ditch effort to view this venue.  I stopped by and was rudely informed by the secretary that I couldn't see  the planner without an appointment while looking me up and down like I was a homeless person coming in off the street.  She refused to allow me to take a quick peak into the venue.  Needless to say, I took my wedding, reception, and 325 guests to the civic center.
Review Source:Great music venue, great talent hosted. This is the best place to come see live music. The main venue is non smoking with table service for cocktails etc. The layout is perfect for a more intimate music experience. The acoustics are great.
The bar outside the main theatre is a nice bar, with live side stage type acts.
Most importantly they book very good talent.
