We've been coming to Yan's for seven years at this point, when it used to be in Lafayette.
Now it's moved to Orinda, over by the library. Same wonderful owners, but the waitstaff has changed, and they're all new, which can lead to some slower service, but nothing that is too horrible.
I always get the twice cooked pork, which I ask for with less sauce, but it's seriously delicious. I definitely recommend it.
Come during lunch, where you get a tasty salad and egg drop soup with your order!
Great, fresh food. Really enjoyed mu-shu pork, lovers prawns & spicy beef dishes.
Their new location in Orinda is a winner...lots of parking & close to the freeway.
However, Yan's only downside is their excruciatingly SLOW table service!
Staff are very cheery & helpful, but Yan's seriously needs to increase the amount
of waitstaff. On our last visit, we waited over 25 minutes before appetizers arrived.
Actually saw a couple, sit down, wait 10 minutes, & walk out! Ouch!
Customers were waving down waitstaff to get/give checks & & over half a dozen
tables were left un-bussed for nearly an hour.
Love this restaurant, and definitely will return, but am concerned that other patrons
may not be as loyal. Thank goodness their "to-go" sevice is excellent!
I can't believe the two reviews I just read. Â I was not a frequent customer of Hsiang's,
but my husband and I decided to try the new replacement, Yan's. Â We had the duck
with buns and prawns two ways...both were delicious and the portions were huge.
Initially, we thought the prices on the menu a bit high, but after receiving the dish, it was enough for 3-4 so we felt the prices fair. Our service was  excellent ,and I am planning to bring a party of 10 back to celebrate the holidays.  We are looking forward to having Yan's in our community!!
Clean restaurant, ample parking and conveniently located near the Orinda freeway exit. Â Their lunch specials are even offered on the weekends.
The food was tasty and fresh. Â I ordered brown rice with my lunch and my friend ordered white rice. Â We ended up with a large bowl of white rice to share. Â
Service was prompt; however I did not appreciate the constant banter among the waitstaff as the place was not crowded at the time we were there.
Had lunch at this place couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised.  The new owner did some changes to the interior that made the place much more inviting and open.  Ventilation was better too.  Though the menu offer many similar dishes to Hsiang's, the cooking is decidedly better  - more authentic, more Cantonese, and has more of the "wok" flavor that Chinese people prize in a restaurant.  The hostess and waitresses were cheery and friendly, a HUGE improvement from Hsiang's.  Don't get me wrong, I thought Hsiang's was probably the best Chinese restaurant in Orinda, but this is a lot better.  Giving this a 4 star based on this positive first impression.
Review Source:I agree with the previous post. Having been a big fan of Hsiang's, I was disappointed when Eric retired. Still, I was hopeful that Yan's would measure up but after two visits (one eating in and one take-out), I'm left thinking that's it's just an average Chinese restaurant. The pot stickers were too doughy, the prawns tasted a bit fishy like you might expect from previously frozen seafood, and other dishes were lacking in any distinctive flavor.
Having given this mediocre review, I must add that the restaurant was bust both times I was there and they seem to have a loyal following from their previous Lafayette location. I'll probably give it another try, but I'll pass on the pot stickers and prawns.
