We were recommended to come here from the folks at The M Shop. Seems they have a connection to one of the chefs in the kitchen.
First and foremost - Highland Park isn't as trendy or up-and-coming as folks say, but I've only been here since November 2012. So, just be socially aware when you step out of the car and have your ninja-skills on alert.
The York - A little light on the decor, but lots of room to meander. Lots of space at the bar and plenty of tables for couples and groups. The drinks - very well made. I like a good Old Fashioned and they're "on-point". Beer - great selection and the staff knowledgeable about each and every micro-brew offering.
But for us, The Yorks has the best bar-food ever. My wife's favorite is their steak chimichurri w/fries (or salad). Me - I like their daily specials. I had their shortribs at our last outing - fantastic! Fish and Chips - awesome. Anything we've ever ordered we weren't ever disappointed. Highly recommend this establishment.
Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of hipster gastropubs which basically all base their interior design on "urban chic" with a warehouse industrial vibe. However I absolutely do NOT approve of stainless steel prison toilets! You know the small kind with no toilet lid or anything that makes you cringe as a woman as you decide whether or not to try and squat over it instead because it reminds you of those dirty beach bathrooms on hot summer days. Yes they are clean here and they go really well with the decor but come on!
We were newcomers to The York so found ourselves a little confused when no one came to our table to serve us. But we figured out that you just order at the bar and that they have no physical menu which requires you (especially if you are short like I am) to bend your neck back as much as you can in order to read the chalk-scribbled menu on the giant board they have hanging across from the bar. Which is a really unfortunate place to hang the menu as the space between the wall that it is on and the bar is pretty narrow so you have to stand there trying to maneuver to a proper reading spot (the spotlights create a glare on the menu so you will have to move around to read the whole thing) whilst being bumped into by people trying to order food and drinks from the bar.
Now the food was okay however is definitely overpriced. I frequent gastropubs and understand that the food will always be a little overpriced but The York just overdoes it for what you get.
I decided upon the Shrimp Bruschetta. The plate consisted of 3 pieces of toast topped with shrimp, cherry tomatoes, and this really delicious sauce that tied it together so well. This is one of the better spins on bruschetta that I have tried. However for $12, 3 pieces of bruschetta is not going to cut it.
To counterbalance the tapas size of the Shrimp Bruschetta we decided to get one of the specials of the day which was described as Skirt Steak with bleu cheese, bacon, lettuce which was priced at $16. This was going to be "entree" of the night which we would share. When this came out however I was shocked!! 4/5 of the plate was literally covered by this HUGE half of a head of iceberg lettuce topped with dressing, bleu cheese, and bacon bits, while the other 1/5 of the plate consisted of our MINUSCULE "skirt steak" which was haphazardly thrown into a small pile. There was probably about 6 pieces of skirt steak all together. They really should have called this dish a Wedge Salad with a side of skirt steak! I resorted to cutting the already tiny pieces of steak into smaller pieces to make us feel like we were eating more. My boyfriend just forwent pretending it was a steak all together and mixed the pieces in with the wedge salad. I would usually get upset about wasting good meat like that but the steak itself didn't even taste like anything special so I didn't protest. We ordered it medium-rare and it came out more on the medium side and seriously lacking in flavor.
Special Plates of the day are meant to interest customers in a unique dish of the day to intrigue them to pay the higher price point but this was just a rip off.
I don't know why I keep coming here. Â I think it's that every time I go back, it's been just long enough for me to forget the mediocre / disappointing experience from the last time. Â I guess this review is mostly a reminder to myself not to go here again.
The menu items sound and look good, but everything that I've had has been surprisingly bland. Â
For a hipster bar, the draft selection is pretty lacking. Â Wider variety available in bottles if you don't mind shelling out the dough. Â I've gotten the bloody mary most times that I've been here and I always regret it. Â In my experience, it's pretty hard to make a bloody mary undrinkable, but this place gets pretty close with the amount of horse radish that they put in their funky mix.
This place also has the highest population of bartenders / servers who are willing to totally ignore you. Â That fact probably amplifies all of the other shortcomings and puts me past of the point of wanting to give it another try.
The York looks her absolute best under direct sunlight. Â She doesn't need the forgiveness of night to mask her difficulties, she's openly proud (sometimes to the point where she's a little too cool for school). Â I've dealt with a couple of bartenders here that seemed to be wondering how I could possibly be deserving of their service, but hey, let them figure that one out for themselves. Â
Never the less, with the windows wide open, on a day like today where the L.A. sun is hot, and the breeze is refreshingly cool, one can sit facing the street, or at that gorgeous wooden bar they've got, and shoot the breeze over any drink you could imagine. Â There's no shortage of selection here. Â They've got a full bar, lots of great beers on draft, plus all their bottled beers and wines. Â I've had only a few items from their kitchen, and have always been pleased. Â Their complete menu is written in chalk, on giant black boards that go way up to the rafters on both sides of the room. Â The bar is also pretty huge, and elegant, advertising rows and rows of clean glass and shiny liquor, like I said, she's a good looking babe.
I pass by this place every day, and have seen DJ's spinning records, as well as live bands performing on their corner stage. Â In-fact, I believe one of the Future Music employees from down the street, helps with the live music set-up, which I find to be a delightful pooling of local resources, though I haven't been in attendance during their live music nights.
The York is most definitely one of the leading establishments in an already impressive part of town, and I'm glad they're there.
I've been here twice for happy hour. Â I think it's the best time, mainly because the vibe is more laid back--a local's scene--without pretentiousness. Â Also, the beers are 4 bucks. Â "The smug hipster douche factor is high," said one friend who went there during peak hours. Â And it's true: Â I have passed by on my nightly walks and found it too gross to walk in.
My takeaway: Â only go for drinks at Happy Hour. Â I got the fries everybody raves about and they were just bleh.
On a random night, a few friend decided to come here for a quick bite and a beer. Â I didn't expect it to be so busy! It took a great deal of patience and restraint to place an order at the bar. I had to make sure that I didn't snap at all the people who were spilling their beers on me as they were trying to navigate the sardine-packed bar area. There is no efficient way to order. It sucks for the people sitting at the bar because the people behind them have to reach in between the heads to get a menu, pick up their drinks, receive, and pay the bill. I had to be extra careful as to not spill my beer and not elbow them in the face.
Drinks: 4 Stars****
There are a ton of beers on tap and they were decently priced. This was probably the only positive aspect of my experience her.
Food: 1 stars**
1) Mac n Cheese - I'm sad to report that the Mac n cheese here was a big Fail. I haven't been too disappointed with mac n cheeses at gastropubs, so this would be a first. I thought the price was pretty exorbitant for a mac n cheese dish, but it was ginormous! I only wish that it actually had some flavor.
http://www.yelp.com/biz_…
According to my friends, the other items on the menu were pretty good. Since I trust their judgements, I'm willing to give York another shot.
Service: 1 Star*
The service at gastropubs are usually pretty good based on my experiences, but the bartenders who were taking the orders were just plain rude. I understand that the night was pretty busy, so I wasn't expecting a conversation, but the bartender didn't need to be short with me.
Parking:
There aren't very many street parking spots available. The streets are narrow in the neighborhoods, so it's also very difficult to find parking there.
"It feels like a perfect night to dress up like hipsters...," sorry for my Taylor Swift reference but that's what comes to mind when I think of The York (no, not tswift, the hipster part)! I've only been here at night for drinks and oh my, totally a cool and trendy gastropub with hipster written all over it.
The interior is so legit, with an awesome bar and fun decorations like hanging light bulbs. It's hip but also casual. A classic casual.
The drinks are solid too! My boyfriend and I had a couple of mixed drinks that were good and he also bought a big ol' bottle of Chimay which is a dark beer brewed by German monks. Oh snap! I'm not a big beer drinker but I thought this beer was amazing, a bit sweet with a slight fruity aroma (I'm a girl, so yeah, I like my fruity drinks).
I want to try their food next time but totally visit The York for that cool hipster-vibe and smooth beer!
I always find myself at the York on a weekend for lunch when I'm hungover. Â You'll see me probably in a baggy t shirt, my sunglasses still on, with a Peroni and a burger in front of me.
The burger with the egg on it (the breakfasty one, I'm bad with names) and the cuban pork sandwich are my go-tos. Â This place pretends it's a gastropub but really it's just a hipster bar that wanted to capitalize on its location and the fact that it has the space in the back for a kitchen.
I do enjoy it here. Â It's not unbelievable my any means but it's pretty yummy.
They also have a pretty awesome trivia night on Mondays.
Some of the stuff at The York is a little over-priced and they have prison-style metal toilet seats, but I still like the place quite a bit. It has a nice, relaxed vibe, the bartenders are quick, and the food doesn't take long to come.
My favorite time to come is for brunch because it's a little more laid back/not as crowded. If you want to come here on a Friday or Saturday night and be able to eat food at a table, come early because it get's really packed and it can be hard to find a seat.
For Brunch I love to get their croissant french toast, which is stuffed with bananas and topped with berries and maple syrup. For lunch I usually go for the chicken caesar salad and maybe some grilled bread. For dinner I like to have the Cheddar Burger and fries. Their fries are usually on point. They have a great selection of beers on tap and they usually have Crispin Cider too, which I'm a fan of.
Overall, nice spot to go to with a date or a few friends to grab some quick food and couple drinks.
Went to the York for the first time yesterday for lunch. Our experience could have gone much better. Not to say the food was substandard but it did not meet expectations. Here is the breakdown:
Mac N Cheese - Disappointed by the lack of truffle-ness (it tasted like regular M&C). The disappointment was driven home even more so because for $14 you would think the quality and quantity would be evident. I have eaten better M&C in West Hollywood eateries for less than $10 (I assume rents on the Westside are substantially more than in Highland Park)
Crab Meat Burger - Amount of crab meat was minimal and lacked flavor. The fries suffered the same fate.
Fried Garbanzos w/Lime and Cayenne - Very good and only $3 bucks!
The Cider and Ale were excellent but then again they come in a keg. How can that be screwed up?!
Overall: I will not return to the York . Perhaps management should reconsider its recipes for taste, portions, and more importantly its prices as they are not aligned with the products being served and its location.
i will NEVER, EVER GO HERE AGAIN!
i used to like this spot. i grew up in the neighborhood. in fact, i had a business right down the street and would come here when it was a chinese restaurant- years ago!
but, there is now a "bouncer" working here that has to be one of the rudest people ive met. ive never had an experience like this.
this guy had attitude as soon as he spoke to me.
he spoke to me like i was 16- I'm a 46 year old man!
he ended up getting in to it with another guy at the bar and threw him out. then he proceeded to follow him out, saying that he was going to "kick his a$$" and "bust his jaw". really????? thats what a bouncer says? at a neighborhood bar??? most bouncers ive seen in a situation like that would just make sure the guy left and not engage. and the guy wasnt even at fault!!
if this "bouncer" stays there, the York will end up getting a lawsuit filed against them or he'll end up beating some one up that doesnt take kindly to his aggressive manner. or, maybe get beat up himself.
all i know is that i wont be coming back here. ive recommended a LOT of people here over the years because its nice to have a spot like this in the neighborhood.
but now, i wont be recommending this to anyone, EVER.
Disgusted! I witnessed bullying in rare form last night on the part of the bouncer. Never have I seen such a display of poor professionalism. Due to this horrid experience, my friends and I have decided to not return to The York.
There was a small group seated at the bar, obviously enjoying themselves for they were quite exuberant. Next thing I see is the bouncer coming over to them and in a gruff manner threatening to kick them out of the place! He said something along the lines of, "I'm the Sheriff". Â Ridiculous! It obviously confused and upset that party. We couldn't figure out what the problem was either-they were simply laughing and telling stories. Â Next thing I know the bouncer is yelling at one guy in particular saying, "I've had a bad day...I'm gonna (beat) you up!" I've never seen a bouncer treat /speak to a customer in such a way, especially one who didn't start anything inside the bar.
Its one thing to tell a rowdy group to keep it down, its another to threaten without warning. In this group's defense, I saw absolutely nothing wrong with their behavior. If you can't come to The York for a few beers and good times with friends, then I'd rather go somewhere else for casual dinner and drinks.
I can't remember the last time I felt so unsafe at a neighborhood bar.
Hipster-vibe gastropub at its absolute finest! Â The York was such a discovery...totally worth venturing to from The Valley. Â I'm accustomed to being disappointed, what with all the gastropubs popping up around L.A. Â Oh, really, you have a potato-bun burger with a thick toothpick sticking out to the side? Â INSPIRED! Â (not). Â The York flipped the script, and delivered on the promise of culinary deliciousness. Â Our party of 6 ordered a variety of items, and I'll break it down to capture each dish.
Truffle Mac & Chesse - it's been done before, but not like this. Â The subtlety of flavors surprised me, and it wasn't like a blast of truffle with each bite. Â The tomatoes mixed in added a great freshness.
Roasted Root Vegetables / Sauteed Kale - Two side dishes entirely worth getting. Â Vegetable done to perfection. Â The kale is sauteed with a little bit of garlic and lemon to give it some pizazz.
Tofu Sandwich - The group's favorite dish! Â I was thrilled to find that the tofu was expertly grilled and flavored.
Roasted Spicy Chickpeas - Another favorite. Â These muchables were just spicy enough for some zing between bites of everything else. Â Must have! Â Very shareable.
Overall, this was an easy 5-star experience. Â The ambiance was fantastic, the beer and alcohol menu was extensive, and our waiter was fantastic.
I like The York, it's one of my favorite places in the Highland Park area. Â I think it's a rather hidden, quiet, cozy yet classy place with a great wine selection and great food. Â I first came here back in 2007 and really enjoyed my experience. :)
The service here is great and the entire atmosphere is just so comfortable that you can bring anyone here for any meal of the day.
If you look up at the ceiling, you will notice that there is no ceiling and there are large industrial pipes trailing up top which kind of gives this New York loft type of look.
Parking is on the street. :)
We sauntered over from the Colorado Blvd Wine Company after some charcuterie and wine tasting. We LOVE gastropubs (no really--see my check ins for proof) and this had high marks.
First impression: cool little spot! We were greeted by some later brunchers and a gentleman with strawberry blonde hair and glasses that let us know service would not start up again until 3:30p---about 40 minutes. Not a problem! We'll get some drinks! Their brunch service ended at 2:30 and it looked like most of the kitchen guys were grabbing a bite at the bar.
Beer Selection: A-OK. I understand people not being so fond of the idea that there aren't a ton of beers on tap and bottles are pretty limited, but I like that. It means it's constantly rotating, seasonal and sometimes, local.
Food: So, the pulled pork cuban was delicious. The dressing and the ham tasted so much like the ham my mother makes at Thanksgiving. SO good. The slaw was a nice addition to the sandwich. Â We also ordered a chopped spinach salad with pine nuts and goat cheese...that's where it immediately knocked this place down at least ONE star.
MINUS 1 STAR: The same server that greeted us upon entering was nearby. We kindly flagged him down because a) we definitely didn't have pine nuts and b) there were 2 WHOLE goat cheese crumbles in our salad. We told him the mistake and instead of bringing us a side of goat cheese and some pine nuts, he grabbed my boyfriend's fork and started to dig through our salad (I wish I were joking). Really? Do you think I would lie about pine nuts? It's a salad, not a $40 dollar steak dinner. Then he goes "uh, yep. looks like the guys forgot them. it's crazy back there--they're just coming back from a break. sorry." and walked away. Â We were absolutely baffled. First, all you have to say is "sorry for the mistake, I'll bring some pine nuts and cheese right out". It's not like we're looking for a free meal. Being busy isn't an excuse...and it looked like 4 other people were there at the time. Then, you grab a knife and start digging through my salad like I am lying about it? Bleh.
I rarely give 5 stars, and this place was OK, not "knock your socks off good". But the server with the crazy knife wielding shennanigans that desecrated my poor salad? Back off, sir. It didn't do anything to you--it's just naked because the kitchen improperly dressed it.
I love this place!!! It is truly a diamond in the rough... Located in Highland Park. (Another diamond in the rough... But that will be for another review :D).
I seem to find myself here all the time, as it is within walking distance of my house!!! Sometimes I don't know whether this is a blessing or a curse... But either way I love it! The vibe here is completely laid back as its a pretty trendy local hangout... Also Being that Occidental College is literally 2 blocks up and Eagle Rock settles right next door there is an abundance of diverse cultural energy flowing through the area. There is always an amazing beer menu that randomly evolves and the bartenders definitely know how to make a cocktail! OOOOHHH..... Sorry! Don't let me forget they also serve food! Amazing food! My personal favorite is the Pulled Pork Cuban Sandwich which comes with Mustard Aioli, Gruyere cheese, Ham, and a Pickle! To die for!
Anyways this place is BOSS... If you find yourself in North East LA scurry your way down to the York... you wont regret it :D
I've been wanting to try this place out and was excited that we were in the neighborhood to stop by. Â The atmosphere is chill and it's pretty dark inside. Â There is also parking in the back but it's pretty sketchy. Â
My husband and I ended up grabbing some chairs by the bar. Â We ordered the Siracha Chicken Wings and Fish and Chips. Â The fish and chips were meh ... we've definitely had better at other pubs. Â The Siracha Chicken Wings were pretty good and pretty much the saving grace of me giving this place two stars.
I was going to rate this place one star because the bartender was rude in my opinion. Â My husband and I walked in and we were trying to scope out a place to sit. Â The place wasn't that crowded and as soon as two people left their seats we grabbed the seats at the bar. Â At this time, there were about six empty seats at the bar but the bartender didn't even try to help us or greet us. Â
Then two guys walk in and sit down next to us and immediately, they are greeted like they are best friends and served quickly. Â
Finally, the bartender acknowledges us after five minutes! Â Seriously?! Â Keep in mind there are two bartenders working this counter, so this bartender takes our order of drinks and food and then asks if we want to move.
Why the heck would we move seats?! Â We just sat down at the bar. Â We're planning to stay at the bar. Â He didn't look happy too once we said we were staying put.
On top of that when we asked some questions about the beer, he seemed like he was annoyed. Â Maybe it's because we're Asian and they were barely any Asians inside the pub. Â
Overall, I was pretty upset with the service and disappointed since I was really hoping to like this place. Â Don't think I will ever go back again.
A bunch of us wanted a night cap after dinner, so we landed at the York. This is what I noticed:
Very eclectic group of patrons, very crowded even with a huge establishment.
Some girl was crying in the restroom about her man cheating on her.
Couples making out at the corner of the bar.
Random dog outside while it's hipster owner grabbed a drink.
They served a good variety of beers, but I wasn't impressed by the wine selection.
Parking was hard to find.
Bartenders were not that friendly, but I did see them cut someone off. I like that they were paying attention.
We all had a great time anyway, next time we'll go for the food. Saw a truffle grilled cheese on the menu. I love truffle, so I am due for another visit.
I almost came here about a year ago with a friend, but it was so crowded on a weekend we opted to go elsewhere. Â This time around, a group of us arrived early for happy hour on a weeknight and had no trouble getting a table. Â We saw that the menu is scribbled on a chalkboard on each side of the bar. Â I'm pretty sure they were slightly different, but it was so dim in there it was kind of hard to tell.
In general, I'm not a huge fan of having to order at the bar. Â I think it's distracting for the bartender, who is taking time away from making/pouring drinks and it's also harder on us when it's super-crowded and we're trying to get the bartender's attention. Â However, none of those were an issue on this outing since it was a fairly quiet evening.
The food was okay, but nothing stood out. Â We had the SAUTEED KALE (too much lemon), CLASSIC CAESAR SALAD (this was fine), HANDCUT FRIES (ditto), BEER-BATTERED FISH & CHIPS (may never appreciate any here after going to London), SHRIMP BRUSCHETTA (very soggy) and TRUFFLE GRILLED CHEESE (meh).
I had higher hopes for the food, but I think it's a cool place to at least drink. Â I tried the GALAPAGOS (hendrick's gin, pickle juice, grapefruit and ginger ale). Â The pickle juice was interesting. Â No one liked it except for me, but I think I liked it more because it was just different.
I cruised through The York with a friend last night on the hunt for a tasty nightcap; it'd been a long day and I wanted to find a bar that was cute and lowkey - and The York fit the bill quite perfectly! Â The ambiance is great and the bartenders are beyond nice; I had quite the difficult time choosing between one of their many beers and their ridiculously good, authentic cocktails. Â
I started with a Moscow Mule, while my friend sipped on a Reanimator; after we were done we downed a Galapagos like it was no one's business because it was just that damn tasty. Â To get real for a second, that was my first drink with pickle juice, and now I see why people rave about it.
They look like they have a kickass food menu and I kept hearing rumors about their truffle fries; too bad the kitchen was already closed or we would have loaded up. Â Good thing there's always next time!
Ya know, once in a while life throws you a bone . . . and all you can do is enjoy it to the fullest capacity.
With that being said, last night my neighbor Robert and I went out for dinner/drinks. Â He's not from around the SGV, so I decided to take him to The York where I knew they had a great beer selection, and from what I saw on my previous visits the food looked good. Â I've only come here to meet up with people and have drinks, never eat. Â
So I ordered their Salmon, which comes with "roots," for the side. Â Not knowing what they meant by "roots," I assumed it was potatoes, and yes sir it was. Â The Salmon was grilled to perfection, fell apart each time I touched it with my fork, it had a lil spot of pressed garlic in butter on the top/middle. Â And the roots, were seasoned very well, and cooked just right. Â Unfortunately, when we arrived the only seating avail was in a dark lil corner, I only wish I had more light to see just how delicious my piece of salmon was . . . next time!
My neighbor had their special, which was Skirt Steak served with whole garlics and gravy, which sat on a bed of mashed potatoes and laying ever so sexy next to his mashed potatoes were a good sized portion of seared asparagus. Â Now mind you, I never order skirt steak because it's always a thin piece of meat; but his skirt steak was pretty thick. Â He gave me a lil piece of his steak, and I wanted to knock him over the head and steal his meat! Â It was that deliciously delicious! Â It was cooked just right, very juicy and full of flavor. Â Oh man, just thinking about that steak, is giving me an oral orgasm! Â
Oh wait, I almost forgot . . . we ordered the fried garbanzo beans for apps, and those lil phuckers are the bomb-azz-shizzle!!!! Â I'm going to try my hardest to duplicate the recipe this weekend, they were that good!!!
Okay lastly, they have my number one favorite beer on tap, Hangar 24 Alt-Bier! Â If you haven't tried Hangar's Alt-Bier, I suggest you try it; you'll love it. Â
Lastly, the service: Â You order your food and drinks at the bar, they give you a stick w/a number on it, and the waitress brings you your food. Â Service was almost too prompt . . . I wasn't finished munching on the garbanzo beans . . .
Okay, now that I've got my panties in a bunch, I need to revisit The York ~ and the sooner the better, for my own sanity sake! Â And of course, the safety of others!!!!! Ha . . .
As solid as gastropubs get. Very cool decor and vibe. Excellent atmosphere for a group get-together or casual night out, with an open seating and bar set-up. Though I haven't done so, it seems like it'd be a solid place to casually catch a game, too, without being an "in your face" sports bar.
The food is great - definitely a step above typical greasy "bar food." By this, I mean that it's standard bar fare, but done well. Prices aren't "cheap," but not terribly expensive, either. I'd say it's what you'd expect out of a gastropub, but you get what you pay for - the quality certainly justifies the cost.
My only gripe is that their selection of craft beers on tap is only good, not great. So, that's not really much of complaint. But, if you're in the area and you're a craft beer snob, I'd definitely visit Johnny's Bar or The Hermosillo first. That said, I believe they have a fairly extensive bottle selection. There's no topping the menu, though, if you're looking for dinner. From what I hear, it's a solid brunch spot, too, so I hope to visit earlier in the day at some point in the near future.
I have gone here with friends, and it was a really nice place. Great decor and interesting things going on here all the time. The service is good and the employees are really nice.
The crowd that comes here is really diverse. All ethnicities, and socio-economic background come here. Style is definitely something people come in here with, very unique people.
The food here is really food, but expensive. Great sriracha wings, sweet and spicy, and great breakfast food too. You are definitely paying for the quality of food you are getting.
Drinks here are good, large variety of beers on tap and good mix drinks. They put a good amount of alcohol, but still has good balance. I would definitely go back with friends.
I had not been to my old stomping ground in quite a bit. After having some BBQ in Covina me and a friend decided to hit up The York for some after-grubbing drinking. He'd never been there and I was aching to go back.
I ordered 3 Old Fashioned whiskeys and my buddy ordered two Bloody Marys. Mein Gott, were these some potent ass drinks! The first Old Fashioned I had was with Jack Daniels, the second I got was with Makers, and the 3rd one was with Elijah Craig.
They were amazing and well priced. They pour heavy here on every drink you order. You could do a 10-count as to how much they pour before picking up your mouth from the floor. They don't fuck around.
Y'all know I'll be back.
I like this place for food and/or drinks. I have been here several times at different times of the day. They have a good breakfast and bloody mary. For dinner and dessert I suggest the cuban sandwich, wings, or the mac and cheese.
The bar has a large selection and they sometimes have bands play. I know my optometrist plays Jazz there on Sundays.
Found this gem when I realized the hard way that HPK was closed! Sad :(
PARKING: Street
FOOD: They have an impressively extensive menu for a bar. Brunch on the weekends? Don't mind if I do!
-Banana croissant french toast: It was some combination of that, and it was DELICIOUS. Huge serving of carbs in the morning with a banana in the middle. It's served with a berry reduction and maple syrup.
-House potatoes: I'm always a fan of home fries, and you can't really go wrong with them. I thought the potatoes were slightly overseasoned, but then again I'm not a huge fan of uber salty food.
DRINKS: Noon is a little too early for a beer (when it's not game day), but I did noticed their LONG LONG list of brews. They were pretty affordable too (under $10).
Overall, I would definitely come back for a chill night in. They have plenty of seating, and I have a feeling there is potential for some epic dance battles. WIll definitely have to come back for the night crowd!
Just an average gastropubby-type place. Â Don't really have anything to add, but I wanted to let people know...
I came here because many of the Yelp reviews mentioned catching the Lakers game here. Â Unfortunately, when I went yesterday (during the Lakers/Rockets game), they weren't showing it, and were just showing some old movie.
I would venture a guess that because the area is becoming gentrified by white hipsters, they're shifting their focus a bit. Â Anyway, do NOT come here expecting to watch the Lakers play.
We came to the York for a friend's birthday. He is really big into craft beer and good food, so naturally this place sounded great.
On paper I think this place sounds like a great place to eat, but in reality I think is a massive hipster trap. Way too much hype with no way to back it up. Sure the interior is artsy and different layout, but that does not necessarily mean good things.
What I liked:
-I had a good beer
What I didn't like:
-The food was bleh. I got the cuban, and there was NO FLAVOR! How does that happen? Pulled pork reduced to nothing? Sadnesses.
-The menu layout sucks. Trying to figure out your beer choice and food choice is just awkward. Staring at large chalkboards in the middle of isle just isn't fun.
-Seating. First come first serve. It was a bloodbath to try and find a table or a booth. I'm all for this model, but at least have the seating to back it up.
-The noise. You have to practically scream to be heard over the noise. Adding a house band probably does help either. The space is just not laid out well.
-Beer selection. A place that brags a great beer selection does not back it up. The draft beer selection was pretty small, but they did have a large bottle selection. I think a large tap selection would be something to brag about, but a bunch of bottles is nothing different then a liquor store.
We left very disappointed and let down. Birthday fail.
The York is a really nice and laid back bar/restaurant located in the middle of York blvd in Highland Park.
They offer a full cocktail bar and great selection of wines. Additionally they serve some unique and delicious appetizers and main courses to complement your drinks.
As opposed to tradition restaurants where you get a menu and and someone takes your order, here the menus are handwritten on a large board and displayed on the wall on both sides of the bar. Thus you order you food with a bartender and he/she gives you a number and after a 10-15 minutes your meal arrives at your table.
Our party ordered the sriracha wings, cheddar cheeseburger, steak, and lastly their fish and chips. Everyone was satisfied with their dish but the cheeseburger took the cake.
Definitely recommend a visit to The York as it is unique and different from the usual restaurants that are around.
We went on a spontaneous bar hunt this past weekend and decided to try only places that we haven't been to yet. Naturally, that meant Highland Park, because a few of us weren't even aware of the up-and-coming bar scene here.
The York is a cute gastropub that looks like its trying to be similar to the Downtown vibe. I liked that it wasn't too crowded and it was easy to get the bartender's attention when we needed something. I tried the Dutch 77- a combination of champagne, prosecco, and citron vodka. The drink was pretty good and tasted strong. Most of the drinks were under $10.
I wanted to try some of the food, but it was a little expensive for bar food. $14 for mac and cheese? I'm sure they give you a huge portion and its more like an entree, but I would have liked to see smaller options since it is more of a bar at night. If they had snacks/bar food in small portion, it wasn't very apparent.
I think what I love about The York is that it is all things to all people. Â

There IS parking other than street parking, you guys! Â It's off the street behind the bar. Â Although I've never had any problem with street parking, there is a large pay lot right behind the bar.
