The setting is stylish Italian sheek. With dark red walls, small tables and pictures of Italy on the walls. Mirrors are placed around the room to bounce light and add a little dimension to this small nook of heaven.
I love wine. They always have something here that surprises me. (Which is hard considering I worked at a place with 1,400 bottle list.)
If you have any questions the wonderful staff here is pleased to answer it. If they have a bottle open they will pour a taste. Plus the wine list has some truly great, and often funny if you read closely, descriptions of each wine. If you buy a bottle from their well stock area by the bar it's 25% off list price!
There's always something going on here. Monday is 'Polenta Night' and they're having a 'Taste of Tuscany' 5 course wine and food pairing tasting this month. They have an email list to keep you informed, next time you go sign up.
They have a small menu from Brick and Fire, just two doors up. A lot of people grab a drink here before heading into the main restaurant. But space if definitely limited. They don't take reservations except for the special tasting nights which usually has two seating times.
I love the staff here. You can get dressed up if you want but most people wear jeans and a nice shirt. The food is locally grown and seasonal. I've checked out their little garden patch on a neighbors properly up the block. It's nice to know that they have a friendly relationship with the neighbors. I'm included on the neighbors who love them, I only live a block down from them.
All in all this is my favorite place in Humboldt for fancier food with a relaxed atmosphere. I have had some of the best dishes of my life here, grilled rabbit with spatzle in a lemon mushroom cream sauce, and quail with a fettuccini with fiddle fern heads and local veggies, and wild mushroom cobbler with parmesan dough on top (my husband's favorite, he doesn't even like mushrooms!?)
When in doubt, trust your servers recommendations and enjoy!
Great wine! Â And I say that not because of the huge selection, but because I can order ANY bottle of wine from the list if I (with or without a companion) will have two glasses of it. Â If I do not want the rest, it goes on the specials board. Â
I also peruse the specials list to see what others have opened, another way to try new stuff I may not have thought of.
This is a GREAT and affordable way to try new stuff. Â Super fun.
They serve bits and pieces of Brick and Fire's menu, so perfect for having a snack and a glass before your dinner reservations, or just for a light meal in a warm, friendly little place. Â
Didja like that bottle of wine? Â They just happen to be able to sell you a bottle right there. Â Instant gratification.
Highly recommend for some quiet time with a book or raucous laughter with friends.
