The setting is stylish Italian sheek. With dark red walls, small tables and pictures of Italy on the walls. Mirrors are placed around the room to bounce light and add a little dimension to this small nook of heaven.
I love wine. They always have something here that surprises me. (Which is hard considering I worked at a place with 1,400 bottle list.)
If you have any questions the wonderful staff here is pleased to answer it. If they have a bottle open they will pour a taste. Plus the wine list has some truly great, and often funny if you read closely, descriptions of each wine. If you buy a bottle from their well stock area by the bar it's 25% off list price!
There's always something going on here. Monday is 'Polenta Night' and they're having a 'Taste of Tuscany' 5 course wine and food pairing tasting this month. They have an email list to keep you informed, next time you go sign up.
They have a small menu from Brick and Fire, just two doors up. A lot of people grab a drink here before heading into the main restaurant. But space if definitely limited. They don't take reservations except for the special tasting nights which usually has two seating times.
I love the staff here. You can get dressed up if you want but most people wear jeans and a nice shirt. The food is locally grown and seasonal. I've checked out their little garden patch on a neighbors properly up the block. It's nice to know that they have a friendly relationship with the neighbors. I'm included on the neighbors who love them, I only live a block down from them.
All in all this is my favorite place in Humboldt for fancier food with a relaxed atmosphere. I have had some of the best dishes of my life here, grilled rabbit with spatzle in a lemon mushroom cream sauce, and quail with a fettuccini with fiddle fern heads and local veggies, and wild mushroom cobbler with parmesan dough on top (my husband's favorite, he doesn't even like mushrooms!?)
When in doubt, trust your servers recommendations and enjoy!
Great wine! Â And I say that not because of the huge selection, but because I can order ANY bottle of wine from the list if I (with or without a companion) will have two glasses of it. Â If I do not want the rest, it goes on the specials board. Â
I also peruse the specials list to see what others have opened, another way to try new stuff I may not have thought of.
This is a GREAT and affordable way to try new stuff. Â Super fun.
They serve bits and pieces of Brick and Fire's menu, so perfect for having a snack and a glass before your dinner reservations, or just for a light meal in a warm, friendly little place. Â
Didja like that bottle of wine? Â They just happen to be able to sell you a bottle right there. Â Instant gratification.
Highly recommend for some quiet time with a book or raucous laughter with friends.
We tried to go to Brick & Fire and the hostess told us quite rudely that they were fully booked for the night. She said, "You could try next door" the way the department store salesperson in Mean Girls tells Regina, "You could try Sears"--with an attitude and a scrunched face. Ummm...we weren't sure if we had any other choices in Eureka at 8pm so we decided to go next door. Actually, two doors down. To Two Doors Down. Where we were greeted with a server who said, as soon as we sat down, "Just so you know, we don't really have much on the menu...just some salads and pizzas," with the same scrunchy face. Uhh oh...
Okay, so some of the food here was actually pretty good! The staff just needs to learn how to SELL IT! (with a smile!) Our server was friendly for the rest of our time there but that opening statement made us kind of nervous about the food! Service pet peeves aside...the pizza with Humboldt Fog, peach, carmelized onion, and truffle creme fraiche was super yummy, to the point that I am totally going to recreate this topping combo. Even the crust was near perfect. We also got the daily soup, which was a watermelon-tomato gazpacho, and that was good too.
The reason for 3-stars is that the margherita pizza fell quite a bit short and was not a traditional margherita--I did not like the flavor of the sauce. The tiramisu was also really bad. The lady fingers should be soaked in espresso and rum. This was basically just a piece of cake with mascarpone icing and way too much chocolate.
So not a hit all around...but the things that were good were REALLY good! They could also benefit from expanding the menu just a tad....even just to include a few appetizers beyond olives, cheese, and salumi. Worth a visit if Brick & Fire shuns you!
FYI: Even though they have food, it's 21+
I checked out 2 Doors Down right after they opened. Â Very cool atmosphere, cozy and made for conversation. Â Pretty decent wine selection and good food pairings. Â I will be back. Â The only thing I would recommend they work on (which may have improved since then) is to educate their staff on the wines they are serving. Â I received a lot of confused looks that night. Â It may seem like a loss to the owners, but you have to get your servers tasting these wines and becoming familiar with them as the menu changes. Â But like I said, that may have changed since a few months ago. Â At that time, it was obvious the staff had no clue about the wine.
