My question is this, is ABOVE at the Hilton Garden gay and lesbian friendly ? We wanted to have our same-sex wedding celebration there. However, we could not find any web-site that stated they were actually GLBT friendly. They did host a same-sex wedding fair in 2011.Frankly, I wish they would add to their web-site a tab stating gays and lesbians are encouraged to have their celebrations here. This is New York City in 2013 ! The place is beautiful and the nicest venue on Staten Island. We are everywhere and our money is as good as straight peoples, you know.
Review Source:I had heard mixed reviews about Above & I left with just that. The decor is beautiful and open and the outside area is just as nice. The bar is pretty long, but there is only one bar. There was a smaller mini roll-in bar and the kitchen was still open a little after midnight. The drinks are pricey, especially for the size glass they give you. There is a lot of wasted space and definitely little room to dance. There is a big conference table in the front of the room and couches in the middle. Security is constantly telling you to move around & coat check is mandatory. I have never felt so young somewhere. There were plenty of cougars and older men hanging around, as well as people coming up from the ballroom downstairs. It appeared to be the new Bistro hangout, with your typical Staten Island girls trying to brew a fight. Hopefully the summer brings a better experience.
Review Source:This is a pretty nice lounge. I went there once for my friends birthday. The place itself is very nice, it just isn't that big & gets crowded quick. It's more of a lounge then a club so there's no dance floor. The only thing I thought was silly was that they have not one, but three different people in the front checking you with a metal detector, then when you walk in someone checks your ID. You need to check your coat, which is mandatory which I also think is silly - but it's free so that's good. Then when we were ready to leave to get our coat, the guy yelled at us for "blocking" the coat check. Â I feel like I got checked less when I went to the white house. They make it seem like what they have going on over there. I understand they're trying to be "safe" but I think they take things a little too far. The crowd is mixed, younger & older. They have an outside which hopefully is a nice place to hang out in the summertime.
Review Source:I've been to Above three times now. Â It's definitely the most upscale venue Staten Island has for a night out. Â The decor is beautiful, the servers and bartenders are attractive and there are huge windows all over. Â If there's a long line you have to wait outside which sucks in the winter. Â It's nice to have a dress code that coincides with the fancy vibe. Â Drinks are pricey for a local place but they're trying to make it like the city. Â There's no dance floor so if you want to dance it'll be between couches, tables and chairs. Â Be prepared to see everyone and their parents (literally cougars and creeper dads) here. Â I prefer the Thursday night crowd.
Review Source:Above is nothing Staten Island has had, it brings the city right to us, It was too cold to enjoy the rooftop, but I can imagine that it will be great when the weather gets better. The place was designed beautifully. You have to be dressed to get in which is good, attracks a better crowd.
The one downside is the security, but it does prevent fights and we all know in Staten Island there are fights.
This place is hot!! It is absolutely NOT what you would expect on Staten Island. The decor is out of this world!! When it is 50 degrees or above, they open the roof top. It's close to roof top parties I have been to in NYC. The bartenders do an amazing job taking your order rapidly and they make great drinks too. Staten Island, finally has a classy place where you can dress up and not look out of place. The food is a little pricey for the small amount you receive but if you eat first and come here for drinks, you will not be disappointed!! I also like the age range. Late 20's and over. And because it's upscale, the crowd is mature and respectful. The 2 times I went, there were no fights or people looking for trouble which for Staten Island, is very rare!! Dancing is more possible at a VIP table, this is more of a drinks place which is perfect for me!!
Review Source:Above at the Hilton Garden Inn Staten Island is Ok I can't say it's great cause if I'm going to pay city prices to have a drink or buy a round it shouldn't cost an average $13 a glass and the prices rise from there. The ambience is good with a separate area for Dj booth so it does not get in the way or take away from space. The bubble style chandelier is an interesting addition and the huge hard liquor bottle wall is a great touch and makes it feel more up scale and classy. I would reccomend instead of the eatery bar to remove the huge spot it takes over and turn a second bar into it. Allowing for the busy nights to keep the customer and drink flow easier to manage. I would suggest this place as a possible stop to end a night but not in my top 10 at all.
Review Source:Upon hearing about "the new place above the Hilton," I've wanted to check it out for a few months, although I Â prepared myself for what would probably be an expensive version of Z-One.
We arrived around midnight and the line didn't seem to be moving at all. My hopes were lifted, however, when I saw that I everyone was dressed to impress; not an Ed Hardy shirt in sight!
The wait was almost worth it, because the place is beautiful...it was also more packed than I expected. We made our way to the least convoluted area of the bar, under the giant TV. There, I saw a rare sight for NYC...a smiling bartender! After a few minutes, we had his full attention. Before taking our order, he asked us our names and repeated them back to us (another rare occurrence). Â He also asked if we wanted to see a menu, but being that there really was no room at the bar, we declined. My girl friends ordered their skinny drinks (ugh), but I asked Michael (the bartender) for a tasty and strong surprise. Now I forget the name, and I do apologize (caramel something..) but the caramel rimmed martini tasted like a bite out of the best creme brule ever...great choice!
Before leaving the bar in search of some dance space (pretty limited), Michael
repeated back our names, and reminded us of his. He also asked if we'd like the same drinks for our next round. Absentmindedly, we answered yes and turned to push through the teeming masses.
(One con I will mention is a fight I saw between two "bros" getting bottle service, but the bouncers swooped in and that conveniently made an opening on the dance floor, weee!)
When we finished our drinks, we saw the massive pile up at the bar and in an effort to avoid it, we flagged one of the waitresses. Unfortunately, she said we would need to order a bottle for floor service. By the time we reached the bar,
and started to cue for a bartender's attention, Michael walked over and said "I have your drinks ready over here" (!?) Â A little ballsy, but he had in fact remembered our
drinks and had just finished pouring my caramel deliciousness into a glass. Loves it.
The personality of this one bartender definitely helped define the personality
of Above itself. With the right recipe, almost anyone can make a killer cocktail. But it takes more than well-measured and fancy ingredients to make a visit to your local watering hole special. Needless to say, it was a successful night out. See you soon, Above!
Beautiful decor and spacious area, I love the huge bar area and designing of all different bottles of liquor on the wall with the different color lightening behind it. The DJ was awesome that night. You don't have the best view of the city or much but the inside is really nice and even the restroom. The drinks are pricey like city prices and I feel mine were not as strong the cups are small too for the price of the drink which can start off at $14. I danced all night in which they really don't have a dance floor you just pick a spot and dance because the center of the room is where there's tables and couches for people who are having bottle services. Overall I had a good time with my girlfriends, defiantly a Staten Island crowd but not as many jersey shore look a likes more older crowd. The line is forever outside so I suggest having bottle service, knowing someone or having a pretty group of girls to get in.
Review Source:Absolutely terrible place. The "bouncers" searched my bag as if I were a criminal, while they smelled like alocohol. I then had to wait on a line for 20 minutes, only to be told that they weren't letting anyone else in. The incredibly unprofessional bouncers were completely rude and nasty. We finally got inside, and every single individual working in that place was nasty and snobby. There is not one single person that I had an encounter with that was nice, or even welcoming. The drinks are over priced, and if you're a smoker: don't plan on smoking anywhere near the actual club. You must go down an elevator, out of the doors, and around the corner to smoke a cigarette... and you may not even be allowed back in. The male bouncers treat women as if they are lower individuals and it is a very uncomfortable place to be in. I must say that I expected much more from Mr. Nicotra, considering how well he treated Sandy survivors. The service is terrible, the employees are downright rude and the lounge leaves much to be desired. There is no room for dancing or enjoying yourself at all. Skip it... And make sure if you do go, you're dressed appropriately and know someone at the door... otherwise, you're not getting in. Period. And they'll make you want to punch them in the face as well....
Review Source:Pros: Beautiful View, Marble Bar, Marble Walls. Wrap around terrace (for when it gets warmer, they should get some heaters out there)
Cons: It gets loud, Lots of people, can't smoke on the terrace
most "bang" for your buck are the Martinis, or the bud light platinum if you drink beer (or as always splitting a bottle, but that seems to be true everywhere)
I had no problem with the bouncers or the service, But i did get there before it reached capacity (1030ish) and I was dressed up ( I thought I over dressed by wearing a vest with a button down, but I saw some guys in suits and ties there on dates with ladies in dresses and heels).
Don't wear a Polo shirt, you'll look like one of the barbacks...unless of course that's the look you're going for
