Though not a big fan of the french fries, everytime I buy BBQ from here its always tender and fingerlicking good. Some pretty shady looking characters seem to always be hanging around the place but they never bother me.

Torn between giving this two or three stars but in the end gave it 3. The taste definitely deserves a 3.. Maybe even 3.5. The problem is that even though the rib tips are delicious, they are very fatty and grisly. Most rib tibs have more meat. But what meat you do get is delicious. Also, underneath the tips are a pound of soggy, undercooked fries. If you are putting fries under the meat as a lot of places do, you have to make sure the fries are cooked a little more than you normally might cook them.

If I go back, I'll try the ribs which I'm hoping have more meat.

I visited this place on 11/16/12 arriving at 7:40 pm for a large order of tips with only 2 people ahead of me. low and behold i did not get my food until 8:21 pm and this was on a call-in order. that is just sad. The cashier was very rude. gangbangers hanging out in front of the entrance door. I felt completely un-safe! and the place was filthy (chicago city inspectors need to go there). i saw one of the cooks leave out and return without washing his hands to the food area. i will not be returning i dont care how good their food is, i care about the cleaniness and good customer service, if i am spending my hard earned money.

2nd tier BBQ... Better than Mississippi Rick's & Cap'n Curts, but not on the same level as Lem's & Smoque BBQ. Sauce is similar to Kenny's. Call ahead because they can take a while & it isn't the best neighborhood to lounge in. Cash only.

*I never went here and never tried the food*

I just wanted to inform people that this place does not accept http://restaurant.com certificates. I don't know if this is their bad or restaurant.com's bad for certificates to still be offered for them online, but just know this before you make the trek out there or are thinking of buying a certificate.

got a gift cert. but it turns out they dont take it so i was kinda upset. its a lil shack so nowhere to sit down, just a take out place. got some tips & wings & they were pretty good. i dont agree that they're the best in the chi, but was still pretty tasty.

Waaaaay too much sage used in the hot links for my taste. They're damn near green.

I love the food. They gie you a lot of food in your servings. If you order a small tip, believe me it's enough for 2.

This place turns out some decent bar-be-que. It's not life-changing or anything, but it'll do in a pinch.

The hot sauce, as cautioned, does have some kick. I noticed it most on my last rib, so the sauce itself may lack a little in consistency. I'd probably go for mild if I were to try ribs from here again.

Laura J's review is right on. Alice's has THE best bbq in Chicago.
Robinson's and Carson's dont measure up to Alice's one bit.

The downside of Alice's is that you have to wait. Ive called in orders many times and still had to wait 30-45 minutes. Dont get me wrong--if you have the time its worth the wait, but when you don't you are better off going somewhere else.

Alice's is one of the best kept secrets in Chicago. This is THE best bar-b-que in the city. People come from everywhere to get their ribs from here. The meat is smoked while grilling, and they pour water on the coals to bring out the smoky taste. They are soft, tender, juicy, almost falling off the bone, but still with some resistance. The rib tips are the best! They put on the sauce after the meat is cooked.

You can ask for mild or hot bar-b-que sauce, or a mix of the two. It's the best sauce I ever tasted, but be warned - the hot is HOT! I have been known to eat bowls of pickled jalapeo peppers, yet Alice's hot bar-b-que sauce is so hot it makes my eyes water. It's so painful, but yet so good. I can only handle this once in awhile when I'm in the mood. I usually ask for half and half. They will even put the sauce on your fries for you if you ask.

As for the restaurant itself, it's carryout only. The place is really small, dingy, and is usually packed. As the grill in the window only holds so much meat, you sometimes will have to wait while a whole grill of meat is cooking from raw, at least 30-45 minutes or more. There's no place to sit. You will usually be offered socks or something else for sale, or will be asked for your spare change. The crowd in there is usually really entertaining, but it gets crazier the later it gets. Earlier in the evening the customers are good folk on their way home from work, late at night, keep an eye out. All in all, it's well worth the trouble. The food is really reasonably priced as bar-b-que goes.
