Extremely disappointed after reading good reviews. Place is small, noisy and the pickles on the table aren't very appetizing. We were there on 7/22 and the service was really slow. Took almost an hour to get our meals. They were running out of food, too. To start off on a good note, the steaks were really great and the potatoes were decent. Everything else - not so good. The ribs were dry and not really edible. The mozzarella capreze was a miss, too - tomatoes not ripe. We were a table of 5 and it looks like any table over 4 is a hassle for them. We barely saw our server the whole night. I'd go back only for the steaks.

My grandparent used to take me there when I was little. It still remains the same in a wonderful nostalgic way. Pickles on the tables, pictures on the walls, burgers that are hearty, Reuben's that are piled insanely high and consistently good service. No wonder it's been a staple.

There are times when my mouth is watering for a GOOD steak or burger. When this happens, we go to Arthur's. Their beef is tender, juicy and ALWAYS cooked to order. They have a simple menu, http://www.arthurstavern…, with daily lunch and dinner specials. Most entrees are a la carte, but the sides are worth the extra couple of bucks. Oh, each table also has a pickled veggie bowl - it might have pickles & peppers or cole slaw and pickles...you never know!
There's an upstairs dining area with a great view of Morris Plains and the downstairs dining area is by the bar - a great pub atmosphere! The servers are always friendly too.
In the mood for a French Dip? You may not find it on the menu, but they have one of the BEST because it's real steak on their famous fresh bread with melted cheese.

Still a fan, went for lunch yesterday and had a great burger but my fiance asked for a Reuben with pastrami and turkey and it was missing the turkey. I attribute the mistake not to the waiter but to how loud it is in there. The radio is unnecessarily loud and the high ceilings downstairs amplifies the noise. Only thing keeping it from 5 stars.

The only place you will find a 24 oz steak for $22 dollars...that's less than a dollar per oz people!! This is definitely not your fancy, pretentious, super expensive steakhouse. It's very casual, fun, and great for groups. Though the steak wasn't the best I've ever had, it was definitely worth every penny.

Got the hamburger. The hamburger had a very big slice of onion. I had it cooked medium.

It was better then I expected. The hamburger went well with a red peppers.

I liked Arthur's hamburgers better then smashburgers or 5 guys.

I go to Arthurs at least once a week. Although it is known for being a steakhouse I often enjoy other items on the menu. (I don't eat a ton of meat). I typically look for one of their seafood specials and I am always pleased with what I get. The pickles are just delicious as is the French Onion Soup. You get a great deal for their burgers - $5.99. They are huge yet cheap. Also, I ordered the Chocolate Mousse cake for dessert this past weekend and it is divine. (Light and fluffy) One negative thing can be the wait for a table on a Friday or Saturday. Depending on the night it can be twenty minutes plus since they do not take reservations. Overall, for the price and quality I think it is well worth it!!

Lets Start off by once again prefacing the review by stating its a 5 Star Tavern Type envoirnment not a 5 Star Steak House. If you go in with that premise then ENJOY! If your expecting a white glove service 5 star steak house dining experience than go elsewhere.

Haven't been in over 20 years an it was good way back when and arriving to this nothing has changed local landmark with a full bar and people waiting outside on a Sunday night well it appears it is still all good.

Long rectangular 1st floor and upstairs dining area when super busy is available. Long bar running length of the place with 2 and four top tables with white and red checker cloth giving it an old school tavern feel. Saddle up with 6 of us tonight and a few minute wait allowed us to grab some drinks at the bar. Our server was super friendly preparing some very nice Cosmopolitans for the one lady with us, while the guys went with beer or a couple of wines by the glass. Generous wine pours, tasty cosmo's couple bottles of beers total for pre dinner drinks 8 in total a wopping $43.00 NICE!

Moving on seated with the array of pickles in the open community bowl and red hot peppers. Can't say this is the most sanitary thing going on but roll with is. Couple of wonder hot extra cheesy onion soups were ordered that very good. Onions were carmelized and well for $3.99 a meal in itself. The Lady had a Grilled Chicken breast with mixed grilled vegetables kinda put together from their sandwich selection but they were happy to oblige. One Extra juicy and tasty burger came rolling out along with the arther 24 oz Delmonico. A Rib Eye cut marinated with yes some fat, grizzle and no bone with plenty of meat. this $21.99 staple is their main gig here and is not to be missed. What also is a don't miss is their side of "Arthur's Potatoes" which are a hash brown type browned well they are just dam Good.

Cody took care of us and was on the ball all night.

Bottom line price points, service, friendly envoirnment, reasonable drink prices, makes this place a winner. Its there over 20 years for a reason and if you go with the open idea of what the place produces and not expect more than what the ambiance, and price points allow that you will have a 5 Star meal at Incredible prices. ENJOY! I'll be back!

I went here for dinner last night with my family and ordered the 24 oz steak. It was good but not great, however, for 21.99 I was happy with the value. Someone else got the burger which seemed a great value at 5.99. Service and decor was fine. I liked the garlic bread and creamed spinach although I wouldn't say they were awesome. I would return to Arthur's and from my perspective it's a good deal for the money - not great, but not very expensive.

Best burger in the area. So good I haven't had one of their steaks in a long time. Always packed at the usual times; lunch, after work, dinner. Wait staff does their best but usually falls short on checking back to make sure you don't need a refill on beverages. Seating downstairs is tight, upstairs is better.

Been going here for years, still a great time.

After not going to Arthur's for about 15+ years, I wound up here twice in the past month. The first time was for lunch and I had the burger, it was nothing special. Had that been the only time I ate here they might have gotten 3 stars. The 2nd time was the other day when I went for dinner. What a giant let down.

We walked in around 8 PM and were seated rather quickly despite being crowded. The server walked over and introduced himself, but then disappeared for 20 minutes. When he came back he just took our drink order and stated he will be right back to take the food order, he just wants to get us drinks. 10 Minutes more and the drinks finally arrive and we get to place our order. We ordered some appetizers, two steaks ,and a side of spinach.

The appetizers never show, but our waiter does stop by to say I forgot about them, I am just going to bring them with your main course. I told him to forget about them if the main courses are coming, but he brings them all at the same time anyway. First off, the garlic bread. It was like a sponge absorbed a gallon of melted butter, greasy and gross. The steaks were both overcooked, ordered medium rare, arrived medium well. They were chewy, fatty, gristly steaks. They also had a bad char taste, like the grill hadn't been cleaned in a long while. I would have sent them back, but good luck finding our waiter. The spinach tasted like the frozen boil-in-bags from green giant, although ours was clearly not boiled long enough as it was partially frozen. The food, just kinda sucked.

I also had some other issues. When I got the check I realized we were charged for 4 sodas despite being only 2 of us. What they don't tell you is that only your first refill is free, all others are paid for. I also saw something that absolutely disgusted me. They have a bowl of pickles and pickled peppers on the table, that they don't change after each customer. This women proceeds to take a bite of a pickle and sticks in back into the bowl after each bite, even dipping the end into the pickle juice. That was bad enough, knowing that it was communal. What was even worse was the next party seated there ate from the exact same bowl of pickles.

All I know is it was incredibly overpriced for the quality of food and service they provided. I would rather save my money and go to a chain like outback before coming here again. If I want a good steak, I will spend the money for Roots or Peter Lugers, but Arthur's is off my list.

Plain and simple this place stinks. Bartenders ignore you for endless amounts of time. Food was so so. To top it all off no happy hour ? I mean seriously who wants to pay full price for booze. I dont see what the obsession is. I went here with my girl for a decent dinner and ended up very unsatisfied to the point where I though I had to write about it. Not to mention the awkward bar which doesn't allow you to sit right up next it. This is definitely a one and done type of place I will never come back

Love em. Hate em. It's all goodie in the hoodie. I've been a fan of Arthur's since the Rutgers days. So, it's been awhile and since we couldn't yelp it back in the day - here we go:

Like all steakhouse burgers, it's a hit or miss. And s-s-s-s-s-s-hazam! it was fatty fat fat nice. Medium rare with American of course (wouldn't have it any other way); A big and juicy burger with toasted butter buns. What do we wash down a burger of that size with? A liter of beer (preferable Blue Moon) - cause anything smaller than a liter is weak sauce.

*Chili with extra scallions is good.
*Onions in my burgers made my breath kickin' it. Extra kiss all around of course
*I had the 24oz rib eyes back in the day - hands down best 24oz steak for your money.
*Nice service with a smile

Used my Valentine's coupon for my birthday dinner. This time we sat upstairs which is much less crowded and way more room and no constant foot traffic.

Our party was able to talk and enjoy the pretty Tiffany lamps and the taverny atmosphere of Arthurs.

Once again, best burger I ever ate and the potatoes were good as well (with friend onion). My caesar salad was average (very large portions). Actually, all were very large portions and I was unable to finish.

No dessert this time.

The fiancée and I went to Arthur's last night for dinner. Having been in Morristown for almost two years now, it's strange that this was out first time. When we arrived around 5:30ish, the place was already packed. We walked in and saw that most of the tables were occupied and a lot of people were at the bar. I saw a few waiters walking around but no one was paying us any attention. I turned to my left and saw the server just staring at us. When I asked for a table, she asked if we wanted to eat upstairs. Sure, why not. I didn't even know the place had an upstairs.

Walking up, the stairway is filled with random pictures of happy people enjoying their time (and presumably, their meals) at Arthur's. This is a theme of the decor as the walls in the upstairs dining room are also covered with similar photos. The upstairs room was just under half full when we entered and were brought to a back table near a window that looked out on the street and the Morris Plains train station.

The tables upstairs have red and white checkered tablecloths, giving the illusion that you might be at a family picnic. I get the feeling that's what Arthur's is going for, "When you're here, you're family." (That's someone else's slogan though.)

There was a bowl of plump and juicy pickles at our table and we helped ourselves despite the fact that it had probably been picked over by previous patrons. The pickles themselves were pretty good.

The menu is nothing to brag about. It's only got a handful of meals and is not very inventive. The fiancée and I both ordered the onion soup and a burger. The onion soup was 4 star material. It had a ton of cheese which seemed to never end. It wasn't the best onion soup I'd ever had but it was filling and very good. The burger, not so much. The menu calls it "Our Famous Hamburger." Famous for what, I wonder? Mediocrity?

When the burgers came out, mine was not what I ordered. It had cheddar cheese on it when I asked for mushrooms and swiss. Apologies were made, the burger was returned to the kitchen, and within 5 minutes, I had the right burger in front of me. Except the mushrooms weren't on the burger. What I didn't realize was that I had ordered a side of mushrooms that came on a paper plate. I also ordered Arthur's Potatoes and those came on a paper plate as well. When I eat a burger, I really want french fries but Arthur's doesn't have french fries. If you ask them why, the answer you get is "We don't have a fryer." Eh, really? That's a new one. Maybe you should get one. Regardless, the potatoes were lackluster and expensive to boot. As were the side of mushrooms that I didn't want as a side. Also, they charge extra for lettuce and tomato and these just slide right out of the oversized bun and onto the plate anyway. As for the meat, I asked for it medium well and it was pink inside. Fail. As for the taste, the only good thing I can say about it was that it was filling. I don't think they used any seasonings. Honestly, you can get a much better burger pretty much anywhere. This one is messy, too. And using the harsh and coarse napkins is no picnic, I don't care what the tablecloth is trying to tell you. Napkins like that freak me out. Sorry. They hurt.

We had a waiter and a waitress that were splitting duties. This caused for some confusion throughout the night. Besides the fact that they at first delivered me the wrong order, I was waiting a little too long for one of them to come around and ask if I wanted a refill on my soda. But I guess, by that time the place had filled up and they were busy. After our plates were cleared away, and the check was dropped off, neither one of them came back to take it. We waited close to 10 minutes before I finally flagged down some other guy and asked if he could take it from us. He did and at last, it was taken away, brought back, signed for, and we got the heck outta dodge.

Back downstairs, Arthur's was unbelievably even more crowded than when we'd arrived. Standing room only down there, practically. Upon leaving the restaurant, I couldn't help but wonder what the big deal is. Why is this place always swarming with people? I guess it's sorta on the cheap side if you have a family to feed... just don't allow your kids to get extra fixins. I'm just glad I didn't get the steak. That would have been a lot more money and, based on the burgers, even a bigger disappointment.

Will never return, but have fun Morristown. You must be seeing something I'm not.

I've been here with my family countless times in the past fifteen years and so far nothing has bothered me enough to stop going. That being said, the experience we had this week was less than desirable for a couple of reasons.

First of all, since it was my brother's birthday and we were going to be a party of 8, I decided to call the morning of and inform them that we would be coming for dinner. The gentleman who answered the phone told me that it was fine and everything would be ready even though they don't usually take reservations.

So when we showed up in the evening, I didn't understand why we were forced to wait 15-20 minutes for our table when the upstairs level was not full. I could definitely handle a small wait if the place was packed but it wasn't AND the employee on the phone that morning said that it wasn't going to be a problem.

The food is good, we usually order some garlic bread as an appetizer to share and nobody had any problems. However, when it came time for the main entrees, I noticed that my "filet mignon" was really a petite sirloin masquerading as such.
I've been here enough times and have had the petite sirloin, so I know what I'm eating. I don't have a problem being able to tell the difference between a filet mignon and sirloin, especially since my father is a butcher.

And to top it all off, one of my relatives mentioned that it was my brother's birthday so the waitress was aware of why we had gone out. After eating our entrees, she showed up with her colleagues to sing Happy Birthday to my brother, which was very thoughtful and sweet. What was quite tacky was the fact that they swirled some whipped cream on a dish and placed a candle in that, instead of cutting my brother a little slice of a cake.

Don't get me wrong, it's not about the cake. I think after spending upwards of $200 on a dinner with a sizable party, the least the manager could have done was comped my brother half a slice of whatever. Even if my brother wasn't going to eat it, the table could have had a bite or two. The waitress was very pleasant and I don't blame her for the whipped cream idea; it should have been up to her boss to make a less ridiculous gesture.

Good portions, cooked your way, and for a great price considering what steakhouses normally charge. Food took a little long to come out and I'm not sure the meat is well-seasoned enough, although quality beef can stand up on its own merit. I had the excellent filet mignon sandwich, a steal to get 8 ounces of the best meat at only $12 or $13! I think Arthur's could try harder to be a premier steakhouse and succeed, but at the extra price such a status commands. They seem to be content to be a good all-around steak tavern, and that's four stars to me.

When the pickles are the best thing at a steakhouse, I think you may have a problem.

I've tried Arthur's enough and have never found their steaks to be that good. Mine were average cuts of meat that were full of gristle. I expected better from this famous, well known establishment. Add to that a mediocre beer selection and you basically have the Chili's experience in a slightly more homey atmosphere.

For what I paid, I expected a better cut of meat. The health salad pickles are indeed excellent though and this place is practically the center of Morris Plains.

I would avoid the steaks and go for the burger, which I have had and was quite good. Otherwise, I have yet to be delighted at Arthur's. Outback has better cuts of meat to be totally honest. I would rather go there than Arthurs - and I typically do not like chain restaurants, but this is one of those exceptions.

Awesome food! Their garlic bread with cheese is the best I've had, and their version of French Onion Soup is awesome. I had their Osso Bucco (a special) and my girl had the Arthur's steak, and both were top notch. Huge bar, though we didn't partake. We've found a new go-to place...what a great find!

3 1/2 stars...I probably can't say much that hasn't already been said...but here goes.

I've been to this Arthur's twice and while nothing was bad...nothing was great either. I used to go to Arthur's Steakhouse in North Brunswick when I was in college, and have great memories of a lot of great (and cheap) meals. Maybe the other place isn't as good as I remember, maybe I was here on a couple of off nights, but it was just ok.

Anyway, my last visit I ordered the 24 oz Delmonico with a wedge salad and it was fine...a little too fatty and a little overdone. My wife got the burger, and liked it. I think I was a little put off at how we were crammed into a table surrounded by two large parties...which made it loud and difficult to enjoy our dinner.

I'd go back to Arthur's, but next time I'll be sure to sit in a better spot...and hopefully will have better luck with the steak.

The food was wonderful, great taste, perfect sizes.

Heard about their 24oz and 48oz steak, so I went with my family.
We ordered french onion soup, some salad, two 24oz steaks (should've gotten 48oz.. it would've been cheaper that way), and a burger.

Yup, it's the steak was pretty good! Burger was good too.

But the best part for me was the pickles and peppers in the bucket they have on the table. Man, I'd go back just for those too. And they're free! Woot :)

Cool decor too.

Feels like applebees + local pub + peter lugar mix.

Ate here last night with my husband & my mom. Not the fanciest, but it was a relaxed atmosphere where everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and their food. Service was surprisingly good, even on a crowded friday night.

Mom had the lobster special which was boiled instead of steamed, but she said it was still pretty good. I had the ribs which were delicious. Not fall of the bone tender, but still messy fun. My husband had the pork chop special which he said was really flavorful especially with the mushrooms.

Overally a fun, sports bar/tavern experience. Would definitely come here again.

Tonight, I got the "famous" burger. It was simply a burger patty with a toasted over-sized bun. No onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles (although that's sitting on the table in a bucket), mayo, mustard, bbq sauce, american cheese... nothing! Only a three ounce cup of coleslaw to accompany the lonely burger. For 6 bucks I can't really complain. It was a half a pound of meat my colon will thank me later for.

The reason for 3 stars is simply because it's nothing special. It begs the question as to why it's titled "famous" in the menu.

As for the service and decor, nothing special there either. They served our food with no mistakes and it was within the acceptably unnoticeable time-frame of food service (i.e. nobody at the table looked around and asked, "where's the food"). The place looks like a pub where you can get burgers, steak, and a Guinness... which is crazy because that's what they serve!

*3.5 Stars*
Not as bad of a burger as I had initially experienced on several occasions. My gf was really pushing me to re-try this place. So I did. It's still no frills. Their steaks are still really fatty and reasonably priced (from what I saw) and their service was ok.
Their burgers have come a long way. Not the best I ever had but they have improved a lot. Their rolls are key because they seem to absorb the grease that comes from them. What I was impressed with is if you ask for medium rare, it actually comes out medium rare...who would have thunk! I mean really pink inside...just the way her and I like it.
Their "famous potato's" still need some work, not impressive. Their prices are still low and they finally accept credit cards...welcome to the 21st century! A big improvement and will be on my radar for future burger runs.

This has become one of my favorite steak place. Where else you can get a 24 oz. steak for $21.99? Certainly not in NYC! The portions are huge and taste great too. Most people will not finish the 24 oz steak, so my friend order the BBQ ribs and I ordered the steak to share. Please note, if you don't want your steak to be overly cooked, always order medium rare. I like how they offer a free large bowl of pickles and peppers for each table.

If you are not a red meat lover, this place may not be right for you, because one of my friend can't have red meat and ordered the shrimp and salmon. He said it's not that good.

If I ever goto NJ for steak in the future, I will goto Arthur's Tavern.

Arthur's Tavern isn't exactly what I expected. I knew it was a steakhouse, and it has a charm to the building from the outside. But inside it looks like a TGI Fridays, complete with a huge bar area, kitschy beer bottle lighting fixtures and red checkered table clothes.

I went for Saturday lunch and it was a bit quiet...just a few tables had diners. The service was a tad slow, but not terrible. Every table has a pickle bowl, filled with garlicky pickles, which you seat off Styrofoam plates.

The menu is a bit limited, moving from $6 hamburgers (note, lettuce and tomato are $1 extra) to $17 steak, with little in between. There are no French fries, just Arthur's Famous Potatoes, which were oddly served on Styrofoam plates. I was not very impressed.

I'd like to go back and have a proper steak, but I'm in no rush to return.

One of the worst burgers i've had in years and the French Onion Soup underwhelmed me.

I've been living in Morristown for 4 years and have always known Arthur's was nearby, but have heard wildly divergent opinions on the quality. With this known, finally came here with a friend for dinner.

I know they're famous for their steaks, but as I was heading to a steakhouse the next night for a bachelor party, I decided early on to not have a steak here, thinking most steakhouses also make good burgers.

The venue is a classic Irish-type bar with an old-school feel - lots of seating upstairs and downstairs. We walked right in and got a table on a Friday night aound 8pm. Yummy pickles awaited us on the table.

Beers - not great, Brooklyn Lager, Smithwicks, Blue Moon are your craftiest bets. Brooklyn pitcher for $14 - not bad.

Appetizer - I got the French (Farmers) Onion Soup - not like any french onion I've had before - the broth was just not that flavorful. The bread was a chunky mess, with overly large pieces. The cheese was good, but net net it was not a good French Onion. That being said, my buddy got the nachos and liked them.

Dinner - I had the burger - the bun was way too big for the burger and made it difficult to eat. When I mean bigger, I mean that there was an extra inch of bun around the burge on all sides. The burger was just okay, a bit messy, didn't hold together, just a loose greasy mess.

Side - I got the "Famous Potatoes" - pretty nasty, ate two bites and stopped.

My friend liked his ribs, felt the same about the potatoes though.

The service was good and my friend enjoyed his food, but not a single thing beyond the pickles were good for me - as such, two stars.

I'm really torn about this one. The food was good, kind of very good! We ordered a Hamburger and some Steaks, all medium. This is my test of the kitchen. So many fail at delivering medium cooked meat. It's either rare or overdone. The chef at Arthur's is on top of his game.

The service was excellent as well. And the pickles remind me of trips to the pickle man on the lower east side.

The part that has me torn, is how do you rate a place that has good food, but the eating experience is unpleasant. They don't take reservations, so you have to get there before 6:00 to have any chance of a table without waiting an hour.

Once inside no matter where you sit it is just plain crowded. You are on top of each other chair against chair. If you sit towards the bar or door, those waiting for their table hover over your shoulder, stare at you while you eat and bump into you.

So..... The food is good, the service is good, the prices are reasonable, but the crowds are too much for me.

I'm glad I tried it, and I recommend that you do the same. I'm not sure I'll be back. If you can handle eating elbow to elbow then go for it!

My co-workers could not...no, WOULD not stop raving about the steak here. Best they ever had! Oh, my god amazing! So of course I tried it and could only think, what have you been eating for the last 40 years that this was the best steak you ever had?

It was good but nothing that I haven't had at most decent steak places. The decor is awesome but I don't pay for decor. I would go back if only to try something else on the menu.

Sadly I can only review Arthur's for their drinks and service. I stopped in to hang out with my girlfriend's coworkers. We had frozen strawberry margaritas. They were delicious, not too sweet, and very strong. The food looked delicious. My GF's friend ordered this huge steak entree - totally droolworthy. Service was great too; the waitress was very attentive to our 15 person table.

Arthur's is great for drinks or family-style dinner.

My husband and I bring our toddler to Arthur's. They are always very nice to him and provide a highchair and giggles. I would only go with him on an afternoon or weekday night, not a weekend night b/c it's too crowded.

While Arthur's is not really a restaurant for small children, if you can manage to hold the baby's interest for half an hour while wolfing down a medium steak and half a bottle of wine, you can make it home just in time to have him pass out in the crib while you pass out on the couch.

Recommended: Medium Steak (NOT Well-done, NOT Medium-Rare, NOT Rare), cheeseburger (all cheeses are acceptable), wedge of iceberg lettuce with blue cheese dressing, french onion soup, coffee and all alcoholic beverages (preferably in large containers).

Not Recommended: Everything else. Especially the garlic bread and steak "caesar" salad. Don't go near THAT! I also have a very dubious feeling about the blackboard specials. The potatoes are questionable but are free with the steak. Do yourself a favor and skip the spuds while concentrating on the steak.

Seriously, the (MEDIUM) steak is quite good with a salty, carbonized exoskeleton, albeit a bit fatty and gristly (prepare to CARVE!) Still, for $20ish, what did you expect? You will not leave hungry. Other yelpers have commented on the general cleanliness of the establishment. That is a personal issue between you and your god. I would not eat off the floor here, but I do bring my toddler here (although, admittedly he does not eat the food, he's a Cheerios addict) I have seen things that would make your toes curl, but these have been rectified (I checked) and I eat here semi-regularly with nary a call to the health department. (shrug). Arthur's takes credit-cards now, so no more dashing to the ATM after you order that second bottle of wine.

First note...it is not a steakhouse. You are visiting a local pub (they have 3 locations but its still a local family owned joint) that happens to have great steak, so if you're expecting the white glove treatment, see my review of the Strip House in Livingston.

Known for decades as the place to go for a great steak, when you're not in the mood for a tablecloth and candlelight experience and a huge bill. Everyone here is friendly and welcoming. On my most recent visit, we sat at the bar, and had great service.

The menu is simple and very small, so while there are a few alternatives for those who dont like steak (some chicken items, a REALLLLLLLY yummmy scrod, some simple salads and some deli sandwhiches) you're really going there for the 24oz (currently about 20 bucks), 48oz or junior size steak. its a pub/family atmosphere.

The steaks are among the best I've had and rival any top of the line steakhouse. Do not confuse this with an outback or longhorn level of steak-- this is the good stuff.

The steaks all come with Arthurs delicious potatos, a health salad and a pickle selection. Not a lot of side choices if you want more (most notably, no fries or baked potato) but you can get onions, mushrooms, or garlic bread with or w/o cheese.

Their Burgers are pretty fantastic too, oh and their tap beers are ice cold-- perfect accompaniment to your meal.

Now I'll admit, i've had an isolated bad experience here over the years, but we're talking maybe twice out of dozens of visits. The rest of the times have been a home run.

My husband's family has been coming to Arthur's for over 20 years, and eating there is a beloved S. family tradition.

I remember the "good old days" when my in-laws knew the managers and wait staff by name, the bar was packed and no matter how busy it was, we always got a great table. I always loved the casual interior, full of local memorabilia, checkered cloths, and a bowl of pickles on the table. It was like a Northern New Jersey version of Cheers, with steak.

And the steaks were great - aged, juicy, tender, and prepared just right. We would always order the 24 oz., but I have seen the 48 oz. demolished on occasion.

Other favorite dishes were the French Onion soup, and the lettuce wedge with crumbled Bleu Cheese and Italian dressing.

True to family tradition, we stopped there on Friday night, straight from Newark airport. As sometimes happens when visiting a place that is so vivid in your memory, something seemed different - the service was not as attentive, and the steaks were not as flavorful. It was still good, but not outstanding. It seemed like the place was on winter holiday, with all of the regulars on hiatus, and I longed for the familiar atmosphere of the past.

Perhaps it is us who has moved on? It's possible. We still had a great time, and lamented the fact that very few places like this exist on the West Coast. We heard that Arthur himself is still occasionally seen at a corner table, sharing a round of drinks with friends.

Just like going home, it is never quite the same as how you remember it, but it's nice to know that it's there.
