HORRIBLE, GROSS, NEW MANAGEMENT FAIL!!!! Agreeing with all the recent reviews, I'm extremely disappointed in the direction of the new management here. I've been going here for almost 3 years now & they've always had great portions & delicious food. All has changed, for the worse :( The portion sizing is small, all the food is covered in disgusting "goop", and it tastes HORRIBLE!!! MSG or no MSG, this food is disgusting. So sad to see such a great little restaurant go downhill so fast. I even got double charged on an item! (Luckily they refunded it)
Next time I head into their bar (which serves good drinks!) I'm going to address the food issue with the new manager. The menu has shrunk considerably & like I said earlier...the food was extremely sub par for how expensive it is. I have to agree that the end-of-day Safeway Chinese food is MUCH better than this new crap.
PLEASE go back to the old food & cooks.
My family has been ordering take-out from Asian Wok for over 4 years. It has always been consistently well above average food. Â Tonight, I picked up my Shrimp Fried Rice and Sweet & Sour Chicken order. Â The chicken was extremely overcooked and the rice was bland, and missing egg.
Horrible change at this restaurant. Â I will never enter their doors again.
Don't waste your money or dining experience here. Â Might as well drive straight to Safeway Chinese, just before closing. Eeeewww.
This Chinese restaurant has always been one of our favorites. Great menu, consistent food, everything a good Chinese restaurant should have. We went tonight and were disappointed to find out it was under new management, but decided to give it a try and keep an open mind. The menu has changed and is very small, (almost like a bar menu) We started with the vegetable egg roll, it was ok. Than we had beef with broccoli, and kung po chicken, and chicken friend rice. Still keeping an open mind after the the ok egg roll, we received our food. The kung po chicken was not like it is in other restaurants, it has huge pieces of chicken with all kinds of big chunks of veg. and very few peanuts. The taste was not good, it was not what you would expect it to be. It was almost inedible. The beef with broccoli had a funky sauce, and did not taste like it was suppose to or what we expected.
The owner came over at the end and asked for constructive criticism and when we told her we didn't care for the food, she said it was because it did not have msg. I have been to plenty of  Chinese rest. and asked to keep out the msg and it was still good. We also did not want to take the leftovers and she did not seem to care that we really did not like the food. She did not offer to take anything off the bill or apologize for us not enjoying it. Another family came in, sat down, looked at the menu and then left. I owned a business for years and always wanted my customer to come back and took good care of them. Even offering a credit for the next time would have been a nice touch, not sure I would have used it to be honest, but it would have been good customer service.
The owner was also the bartender, which is fine, but it seemed that the bar was more important than the food. I guess she has been the bartender for 8 years there.
Unfortunately, we will not being going back, unless she expands the menu, gets a new chef who knows how to make good Chinese food, and I see the reviews get better. It is not cheap, so I would not waste my money there again, at least not in the very near future.
If the owner reads this, I hope she listens and try hard to improve it, because Chinese food is one of our favorites and it is a great location for us.
This restaurant has been a consistent go-to establishment for us for over a decade. Â While it hasn't ever been an "outstanding" restaurant, the food food was always decent and consistent. Â Unfortunately, it is under new ownership now and the cooking has gone south. Â Our chicken was dry, the rice overcooked and half of the shrimp in one dish were not deveined.
This restaurant has the best (and only) location in the area, so it should be an outstanding draw from the neighborhood. Â Instead, it is just an eyesore and subpar establishment.
It gets a 1 star rating only because I can't select 0 stars. But if I could, I would. This is absolutely the worst restaurant I've ever eaten at.
The waitress (I think she might have been the manager/owner) was AWFUL. We went for the lunch buffet around noon and there was barely any food. I asked the waitress where all the food was, and she looked at me and walked away. Later, she was bringing out fresh egg rolls for some of the other patrons, and we asked her for some. She brought us two. We were a group of three and I asked her for one more. She instead brought over a pair of scissors (were they even sanitary??) and cut the egg rolls in half. She then proceeded to tell us to eat faster to "enjoy the nice weather outside".
The lack of food and horrible service aside, the worst part was when we went to pay. She charged us $7.95 per person even though the sign outside said $6.95 for the lunch buffet. I asked her why, and she said she had just raised the price and forgot to change the sign. My father-in-law took a photo of the sign as we left as proof that it said $6.95. My friend went the week after and was charged $6.95. I literally feel robbed - this place is AWFUL, that woman is HORRIBLE - avoid this place at all costs. I don't know how they are still in business, it is literally the worst dining experience of my life. I will NEVER go back and neither will any of my friends.
Never again. My bf and I saw the 3 stars and thought we'd try it... Without any expectations. We Should have read the one star reviews more carefully. They are dead on!
This place gave me the creeps! The male waiter stared at us from our car from the back kitchen door. When we went into the restaurant there he was staring at us from the bar counter. At various points throughout the meal we also saw a cook staring at us from the little kitchen window. Wtf is up here. There was a large table of kids between our view and theirs, so they may have been staring at the kids but that is even creepier.
I was so irked I paid cash (so they wouldnt have my name) and got out of there as fast as I could.
Btw people smoke right outside the front door too. Just stay away in my opinion. The people in the bar always seem to be having fun when we drive by, we sat in the restaurant side. Still, NEVER again.
It's surprising to me to see the low ratings. For americanized Chinese food, Asian Wok gets it right every time. Â Plus certain things are truly outstanding like the pots tickers and a scallop shrimp specialty that's delightful. The decor is tired, and the bar prevails, but the fish tanks are clean and the service is top notch.
Review Source:Order the Asian Donuts when you want a junk food-sugar rush. Â (I asked the hostess what they were and she said, "Asian Donuts.") They're so good, and you get a carton full for $5.50. Only takes minutes to wait, and you're off in your Victoria's Secret sweats and new glasses to watch Felicity on Netflix Streaming. If you want.
Review Source:I really hate giving 1 star ratings but I spent way to much money on food that just wasn't good. I was so looking forward to eating good Chinese Cuisine.
I went inside to get the order, the decor looked reasonable, it looked like they have a buffet, the staff was very nice and professional and the order was timely. I thought I was spending money on quality food.
I spent over forty dollars on dumplings (good), Mongolian beef (okay), sweet and sour chicken (okay), almond chicken (eh...), and steamed rice.
Nobody really ate their food :/
I wish it had been better. I don't really know what to say but perhaps they should .... well I'm not in the food industry so I don't even know what they could do because they have good bones and a variety flavor is just something greatly needed.
Don't ever eat here. Â Say what you will about the food or the service. Â This review is about something else.
It had been rumoured for awhile by people like myself that live on the Market St. corridor, but it's completely true: Â The place has a rat infestation as of February 2012.
I saw the rat with my own two eyes 02/13/12 during the evening inside the restaurant. Â I am a nearby resident and have frequented the place before. Â This was no household pet, it was a disgusting sewer rat.
After warning the bartender, she quietly just shrugged it off saying "oh yeah they are going to take care of it." Â There you have it: Â Confirmed by an employee.
My reaction was stunned sickness that she didn't even seem to mind. Â Guess when your job is on the line you are willing to look past other people's health.
This is not a joke, I came here to warn people. Â I'm calling the City of Kirkland / health department on these guys. Â Hopefully the place is SHUT DOWN until the issue is fixed or closed indefinitely.
Again I warn you: Â Don't eat here.
I really like the Wok. Might not be the best food ever, but it's darn tasty and the drinks are strong. Had my birthday dinner here last year and they were super accommodating for my big party. Even did separate checks and let us bring in a DQ ice cream cake. The honey walnut prawns are my fav! And yes, the decor is ugly...but isn't that part of the charm?
Review Source:My husband and I moved to Kirkland in 2001 and Asian Wok quickly became our favorite Chinese restaurant. We love this place.
When we moved to Woodinville in 2005, it was just too far away. Over the years we've tried all the Chinese food places around from Kenmore to Duvall and absolutely nothing compares.
We walked into Asian Wok this last weekend and were greeted with our names and a wonderful smile. Yes, it is dated. Yes, it might need a face lift. But, the service is awesome and the food is better.
We usually have a combination from the following: Hot & Sour Soup, Almond Chicken, Special House Chow Mein, Honey Prawn, Spicy Crispy Beef and Cashew Chicken. You just can't go wrong. I really do recommend this place because the food rocks and they treat us like family.
Yuck!!!
The beau and I only walked in to order take-out because we just returned from a trip and were starving, and it happened to be the only restaurant in our neighborhood opened past 9 pm on a Sunday night. Â I really wish we would have kept driving..
The place smelled of mildew and old cigarettes (red flag), little did we know that those exact aromas would have burrowed themselves deeply into our meal. Â We ordered the sizzling rice soup (soo bland and very little ingredients. Â I ended up adding sea salt and black pepper to give it some flavor), and the Szechuan beef (fried to death) which was nestled atop wilted cabbage with the dreaded mildew and nicotine undertones. Â I took two bites and that was it. Â $26 bucks down the drain (lame soup, fried beef poop and white rice came to twenty-six bucks=rip off).
It took me all night to get those horrid tastes out of my mouth. Â (Listerine, you are my bitch!) Â Seriously, I, and my taste buds, am suffering some serious foodie nightmares because of this place.
SO disappointing, bordering on inedible. Â We left most of our dishes uneaten, and it ain't cheap. Â Quality was WORSE than panda express/cafeteria style american-chinese food, yet prices were way higher (where you might pay $8 for mediocre frozen cafeteria sweet and sour chicken, here it was $12 and old/gross tasting). Wasn't looking for fusion or authentic, just decent fried meat and bbq, typical american-chinese take-out style food. But quality was TERRIBLE!
Stopped in on a Friday evening at 9pm (checked sign and they were open until 11pm or later). Â But there was NOONE in the dining area (although the bar did seem pretty full). But we decided that most diners must be interested in the bar atmosphere, so we went into the dining room to have dinner. Â Wait staff was friendly and food came out relatively quickly, but that is the end of the positive things.
The BBQ pork appetizer arrived VERY cold, which I found strange, but we were STARVING (9:30pm is late dinner for us) and so we ate it all quickly. It was perfectly average in quality and taste, just a weird temperature. I've always had this dish at least warmed up before serving before.
The Sizzling Rice Soup was very mediocre. Â It was the saddest large bowl of water ever. Â Mostly broth, with just the most meager ingredients. Two scallops (from frozen), a tiny handful of veg, and two pieces of chicken. Â Sadly the broth itself might as well have been just water. VERY little flavor. But it was warm and we were still starving, so we ate it, but 2 out of 3 of us added soy sauce to our cups so that there would be a flavor of some kind. bland bland bland. Â
The Sweet and Sour Chicken was terrible! Â The meat was old, and weirdly gristle bits. Â And it all had a dirty dishwater/old refrigerator flavor to it. Very unappealing! My sister tried cutting off the fried breading and just eating that, leaving the gross chicken, but not very successful. The meager selection of vegetables were mushy and old/weird tasting, as well. The gross old meat/dirty fridge taste led us to believe that they've been keeping this in a dirty freezer for far too long, before it was deep fried for us. yuck!
We also ordered a combination dish (with a unique name. Maybe Dragon and Phoenix?) that was half serving of General Tso's Chicken and half serving of some seafood dish (I can't even remember if it was scallops or prawns) with broccoli. Â Again, the General's chicken was gross/old tasting. I mean, HOW CAN YOU MESS UP DEEP FRIED MEAT IN SWEET/SPICY SAUCE?!? Â Yucky. The seafood portion tasted slightly old/fishy, but we ate a few bites, and ate the broccoli.
Entrees were $12 (or even $16 or more, I think, in the general's/seafood combo) and with soup and an appetizer, it was an expensive meal for things we didn't eat. We could have gone to a Panda Express (or the freezer section of Safeway) for WAY LESS MONEY and had BETTER FOOD!! This had the appearance and taste of from frozen (which we don't even mind) but being OLD and not clean, and with meat that tastes of dishwater...for THAT, I DO blame them!
Such a shame. Â The only way I can explain the diners in the bar is that they must have CHEAP DRINKS. Â The only way anyone would eat this food is if they are very very drunk. Â Yucky! Â (One person walked in, asked to see a menu, and placed a "To Go" order. We wanted to warn him to stay away!)
On the outside, it looks disgusting, with a faded banner, unkempt property, and more, but on the inside, the restaurant is very clean, neat, and tidy.
The food is absolutely delicious, especially their scallops and beef dish which I can't help but have every time. They're also very accommodating to food allergies, which is important for my fiancee with gluten intolerance. The waitress we always see is knowledgeable, and the dishes we ordered were still fantastic even without soy sauce (which contains gluten) added to it! Good prices too, and it gets you a lot of food for not too much money.
We have been going here for years. Â They are always so kind and responsive to all of our needs. Â We think the food is great. Â Well prepared, good, quality ingrediants and dependably prepared. Â We pretty much order the same things from the menu each time and are never disappointed. Â Don't believe the guy who said the place and food were disgusting. Â Margee and spouse
Review Source:This place has wonderful food, great service, but the ambiance is really lacking, but if you want a great chinese dinner, go for it! The bar is really friendly, a nice "neighborhood" bar, and you can order food there too. We haven't had a bad dish, and it comes so fast you wonder how they can cook to order, which they obviously do. The deep fried dishes are a light batter, and the sauces are very tasty. The deep fried prawns are stunning!
Review Source:There are so many mixed reviews on this place. Â I think most of the negative reviews come from the smokey lounge/bar attached to the restaurant. Â Take my advice: don't eat inside. Â Call ahead and order your food to go. Â Spend as little time inside as possible. Â Take your food back home and eat it family style with all your friends. Â It's awesomely good. Â Yes, I've had a few not so good dishes, but most of the time, the food is spot on. Â My favs: General Tso's chicken, Beef & Broccoli.
Review Source:I'm from NY and the chinese food there is very unique - I like Asian Wok as it reminds of NY Chinese food (they have shrimp toast and real won ton soup). I don't recommend their buffet as I always get takeout and it'd always good. Their bar is always happening, but I'm not realy hip on the Juanita scene.
Review Source:In Washington State, certain types of liquor licenses have an alcohol sales to food sales ratio requirement. This has created an entire cadre of cocktail lounges with crappy restaurants attached. Asia Wok is a prime example where they do the least amount possible on the restaurant side in order to keep their bar open.
The food is on par with that you'd get from the China Express counter at Safeway - which is to say, highly sketchy.
That said, the bar is always buzzing, as I drive by on my way to get something better.
Generally only come here for their lunch buffet, which isn't really great, but it is close to home. Â Some people seem to drive here for the bar, but that's not my style, especially at a neighborhood chinese place. Â
Outside of the buffet, which is best to get around 11:30/noon to avoid it being overcooked and understocked, I like their sauteed green beans, ma po tofu, BBQ pork chow mein and moo shu chicken/pork. Â My son generally likes the fried anything.
This is the 2nd Chinese restaurant called "Asian Wok" that I have visited in the last few days. What was I thinking?
Pro's - The service was good, and aside from the creepy chicken in it.. the chow mein noodles were good.
Con's - The general's chicken came out and the peices were huge! Big chunks.. I cut into several of the peices and they were all "mystery" meat style chicken. Â Also, the chicken in the chow mein was the same way.. very disturbing texture... slimey and overly chewy.. My friend didn't mind as much as I did.. So if you aren't picky about meat - the flavors weren't bad.
I am pickier about meat than anything else.. so I will not be back.
Don't let the crazy old decorations straight from China keep you away. The food is good. We gorged ourselves on the yummy kung pao chicken and general tso chicken and still had enough left for lunch the next day. Maybe even better, the staff is super friendly. Most of the other people dining on Saturday night were on a first name basis with the staff.
This is the kind of place where I want to eat! (And, there's a take out menu.)
Asian Wok is a great chinese food restaurant, and offers a variety of dishes at inexpensive prices. My family and I always go to Asian wok for birthdays and holidays. It looks pretty sketchy from the outside, but don't let it fool you! definitely check it out sometime. you get big portions of everything, so you can sample from everyone's plate.
Review Source:Night life? I didn't know Asian Wok was involved in the Kirkland night life scene. At any rate, it's a decent asian restaurant that does well for the traditional/popular dishes (Sweet & Sour Chicken, Mongolian beef, etc.). I just wish they would redecorate or something. The purple awning has got to go. It's looked the same for years!
