Just got back from an amazing (and free) 4th of July bbq at Bar 43. The hospitality was amazing! Burgers, ribs, coleslaw, corn etc., no skimping. The burgers lived up to the hype! Great community atmosphere. Insane number of beers on tap. We live in the area and will definitely be back!
Review Source:This is the perfect neighborhood bar! Â Although it's a "sports bar" the crowd is everyone from bros catching the game to couples having a quiet dinner or a group of friends just hanging out - people from all walks of life. Â The beers on tap are great, and you can get a beer flight for $8!!! Â Food is good - supergood french fries and Atomic Wings. Â The only thing I wasn't stoked about were the potato skins. Â I'm a HUGE skins fanatic and eat them almost everywhere I go, and the portion of these potato skins was the skimpiest I've ever seen (4 pieces). Â Other than that, really great vibe and friendly service, too!
Review Source:Love, love, lovvvve Bar 43.
My boy and I are new to the neighborhood and are so happy to have come across this place.
We came for the first time for brunch and I meant to write a review because our server was so great but i never got around to it... On our second visit here everything was again so consistent and GREAT that I gotta share. (The server we always have is Danny and he is awesome!!)
The atmosphere is really chill. Sports on all the TVs- lively crowd. The food is SO good.
Best burgers in the area, no question - freshly made, cooked to order, with excellent thick cut skin on fries
family friendly
outdoor seating perfect for brunch or dinner
attracts diverse crowd reflecting diversity of the neighborhood
all around terrific neighborhood spot with great pub food; highly recommend
This place could possibly have the best burger I have ever had in NYC.
The service is attentive and great on a Saturday night. THE FOOD IS AMAZING and the prices are much better than the city's! Who needs Manhattan when you got a local bar like this going on?
Bar 43 you have a new devoted fan
I really wish this place was better. Don't get me wrong, I've given them more than their fair shot over a few different visits. I'm giving it three stars because the trivia on Tuesdays is great, but I think they lucked out with Ty.
If you stick with the usual fried bar fare, they're ok. Nothing special, although my friends really like the curry sauce you can get with the fries. When I've had the burgers, they were hockey puck charred. I got the nachos one time, which were plentiful, but the waitress ordered the wrong protein, and when I asked for jalapeños, I was told they were in the salsa and guacamole. I got more on the side, 2oz for $.75 extra. Speaking of the service, they either need more servers scheduled for nights like trivia, or to get a better staff. My drink is all too often run dry, and I have to flag them down to get anything. On our last visit, we were charged for extra food we didn't order or receive. Good thing we took a close look at the bill, otherwise we would have been charged almost $20 more. I was also told that credit cards will not be charged under $35. Really? If you don't want to take credit cards, just be cash only.
All in all, a lot of small annoyances adding up, but the service issue on Tuesdays really take the cake. For the above average cost of the food and drink, staying for three hours of trivia (it get's a little too long some nights), and dealing with awful service just reminds me that there are so many other bars in Sunnyside also with trivia and better food.
Been a huge neighborhood fan of Bar 43, now they have a brand new CHEF, and he ROCKS! The typical bar food like hot wing chicken strips, sliders and nachos are great standbys to go along with their diverse micro brews on tap.
Tons of great snacks for the Tuesday's TRIVIA night which is super fun.
If you're looking for a sit down meal - go for the Shepard's Pie, Steak or one of the huge salads on the dinner menu. Overall the bar, the staff and the owners are great supporters who give back to the extended neighborhoods of Queens and makes me feel good spending my hard earned cash at such a fab place!
"Go to" spot close to home. I wish they had better draft beers. There's a lot on tap, just not anything really good. But the music is good, crowd is good, ambiance is good, food is good as well. So many bars in sunnyside feel so dreary. Bar 43 is a nice change to that. Friendly bartenders.
Review Source:I walked in and the waitress Genesis was busy but she saw i needed help and instantly made sure i was taken care of! the shepherds pie is amazing!! better than some of the places in the city and my bartender was very nice and friendly! I have to say though Genesis was a key factor to my stay! Ive been there before and she always makes sure to greet you and see if you need help! Even if you can tell she has a million things going on in her head!
Review Source:I thought I would give Bar 43 another chance after last week's mysterious closure. We even called ahead to make sure they were open for brunch and we stopped by around 12pm. We walked in (door was open this time) and there were two people sitting at the bar. No hostess, no bartender, no waitress. The people sitting at the bar were likely staff members who couldn't be bothered to greet us or get us menus. We walked out shortly thereafter and enjoyed a great brunch at the Stove in Astoria.
Seriously, spend your money somewhere else. I will never ever go here again. Terrible staff.
I stopped by this past week after not coming around after some time not because the place is bad , just simply because I seem to forget the place is here , lol
Small place not too big ..nice seating area plus a full bar. we settled right by the bar in the middle section & got some drinks , we stuck w Beer always a good choice & simply cant go wrong the Stella was great nice & cold.
We ordered some wings to pick on u can Mix & Match , we tried the Chipotle & regular BBQ flavors , not bad decent wings super hot when they bring them to the table.
Nice place to sit enjoy some drinks & watch a game , plenty of screens around. decent service & friendly staff  chances I'll probably return.
Bar 43 has become our go to place for great food and drinks. Staff are really friendly and service is fast. They recently revamped the menu which has great variety. Huge drinks selection, lots of TVs and good music.
Not to be missed is the midweek lunchtime special, grilled chicken panini with mozzarella and peppers, so good!! I'd definitely recommend bar 43!
I stumbled upon this place by chance, and was pleasantly surprised. The curry dish was enjoyable, and the beers on tap were plentiful and varied. There was some of trivia night going on the same night I attended, so the place got a little more crowded toward the end of my dining experience. Overall, the meal and drinks were solid, and I would return if I were in the area.
Review Source:Bar 43 has been our go-to place, and enjoy every time we hang out there..
I went there last night for my "BIRTHDAY" and every one failed to mention about the deal they have. "Free drinks on your birthday; just show the ID and bring 3 friends" What the heck.. As much as i like the place and service, they didn't follow the rule. All the employees should informed the consumers with all the updates.
Yes, they mention about "Ladies night" for Thursday $5 for martinis. The employees should up to the game. Slightly disappointed.
I will be going back again as i like the place so much..
It all started with a Yelp check-in offer. It was one of the few bars in the area that had it and I was definitely willing to take it. And with the discount being 10% off the total bill, it was most certainly better than nothing at all. After discovering many wonderful things, I've been coming here ever since.
For Sunnyside, Bar 43 is not the average venue. Not even by a long shot. In an area ladden with a dime a (two) dozen Irish pubs, this place distinguishes itself by being a multifaceted venue. Instead of being "just a pub" it prides itself as a cozy sports bar, a restaurant, and a lounge with free wifi. There is admittedly a contemporary, modern feel here compared to the old world pubs around the corner and the hood definitely needs a joint like this. Though it may not tout a nice beer garden / patio like some of the other nearby venues, it does have nice outdoor dining setup out front.
The food may not be enough to knock one's socks off, but there are some decent takeaways. Instead of eating steak fries with plain ketchup / mayo, try their version of curry and chips. It's a staple in the hood (same goes with the Irish breakfast) and they do a decent job of it. The $10 burger is good option, with a nicely cooked, well seasoned patty, and standup presentation that I don't expect in places like this. I have yet to have had a bad version of their ground beef nachos, which is abundantly stacked with the usual toppings (sour cream, salsa, guac, cheese, and meat) and is plentiful in every way. The brunch hour on the weekends feels admittedly a tad pricey ($12 for some eggs benny? Yikes) and I much prefer coming here on a laid back week night.
And speaking of week nights, their nightly happy hour goes from 12-7pm with beers and cocktails ranging from $3-5 each. There is also an open bar deal on Mondays and Wednesdays, which goes from 6-8pm and is $20 ($5 tip included). As much as I love the Tuesday taco night, I'm not terribly fond of their tacos but I do love the festive ambiance. Thursday evenings is for the ladies, which includes an open bar from 8-9pm.
Lastly, the staff has always been cool from the waitresses to the bartenders to the managers. They're always diligent about refilling my water or drink, randomly comping dishes that my group and I may not have liked, and are quick to point out specials to help everyone save a few bucks. That's pretty awesome and as a result, so is Bar 43.
Very nice atmosphere for football. Â It seems half way through our service dropped off with my drink being empty for long periods of time. Â I had the steak sandwich which was huge and pretty good except for the fact that the garlic bread bun was absolutely soaked with butter.
They have a lot of beer on tap. Â I was drinking down some abita. Â The prices are kinda Manhattan like for a place in Sunnyside. Â Steak sandwich is $15, beer is $6 or so a pint. Â Still it is very nice inside so not really out of whack.
I love Bar 43. Â The bartenders are friendly and quick with your drink. Â I miss Paul but the usual guy, Mark?, is great. Â Funny little comebacks and puts up with the tipsy locals, even when we are being "that guy"
I appreciate the beer tubes, sometimes a pitcher just isn't enough!  I especially appreciate the engineering  that is the ice column inside the beer, protected in a plastic casing as to not water down your carbonated hoppy bev.
Awesome specials every day of the week. Friday Facebook specials really do it for me. Â
The food is better than the average bar but stay away from the calamari, weird stuff happening there. Â I can't rave enough about the sirloin steak sandwich, really you just need to have one. Â
The weekly Jets crowd is as good as it gets. Chants, cheers, harassing of Giants fans and the like. Â And let's not forget, the specials are solid.
I just read Corrie's review about it being slightly expensive...I don't know the neighborhood that well, but I do know Manhattan. Â After spending the second half of the game here, I swore off Manhattan. Â I loved the prices, the drinks, the friendly service and the crowd. Â We read a tip on foursquare to get a white russian- awesome advice! Â
It is a perfect Sunday football bar. Â I'd be very interested in stopping here on a night out and checking out the scene.
The only time I come here is to watch football or baseball...and I think that's what most people do. Â It definitely has a sports atmosphere with several TVs and a cheering (or booing) crowd. Â They had cheap beer towers during games too so that's pretty great if you're coming with a group. Â
Slightly more expensive than the average bar in the neighborhood - but they also bring in a much different crowd and it's always busy, if not boisterous on Sundays and Monday nights during football season. Â
I've been here for food a few times as well and it is typical bar food. Â Tasty, bad for you and nothing out of the ordinary. Â Brunch was decent as well.
Great place for happy hour especially on fridays with buy one get one free appetizer. I must say the chef at this place is very good because ive eaten here many times and everything is right on point.
drinks average priced
4-4.50 domestic pint
5 buck domestic bottle.
they have drink specials all the time including food as well.
Huge tvs all over bar so def for sports fan plus really only 2 mins from subway
This place has gone downhill. Â I was totally excited when this opened up in my 'hood a couple of years ago because they have outdoor seating, which was lacking over here in comparison to Astoria.
Anyways, my roommate and I really wanted sangria, which used to be pretty good here -- large goblet with fruit in red or white. Â Now, however, there is no fruit, it's in a much smaller glass... and although it took us a few minutes to figure it out, it was definitely made of Minute Maid Fruit Punch, which was a favorite beverage of mine when I was 6. Â We had the red, so I figure the white is probably the Minute Maid Citrus Punch. Â I wonder if it was from concentrate??
So, we ordered food. Â We weren't super hungry, but we were expecting massive amounts of sangria, so we ordered the sliders and chicken fingers. Â The sliders were overly-seasoned... kinda salty. Â I forgot to ask for cheese and it was never offered. Â Then we split the chicken fingers, which came with three small pieces, honey mustard sauce, and some fries. Â There were more fries than fingers. Â My friend ate one, I ate half of the other. Â It seemed as though the finger was cooked in old oil. Â I say this because it had a 'soapy'-like taste. Â Not very appetizing.
I probably will come back here because it's around the corner, but I'll be sticking to beer only from now on.
I am rating strictly on drinks, ambiance and service.
The food on the other had.. NO BUENO!
All we actually did order as far as food goes was Calamari and french fries. Both went virtually untouched after the first bite. Extremely disappointing.
That being said.. I really like this place. The Mojitos are awesome! My usual when visiting the place. Good people. Service is great. The waitress was kind enough to ask if we liked our food and offered to exchange our selection. we choose not to but to our surprise were not charged for the apps we ordered.
I'd say pretty good.
Nice atmosphere. Mostly a sports bar with a lot of locals. Decent price with decent food. Nothing spectacular to be honest but a nice place to go if you are looking for a laid back setting. Quite the eccentric crowd here. Â Service was kind of slow because there was only one waitress working the whole time I was there on a Sunday and watching the playoffs. Â
FYI: If you are young, pretty and sexy, you will get hit on by some weird old guy who came up to me and got real close.
Friendly, fun, and delicious when the main chef is in the house. Â Chicken curry with rice/fries is delicious. Â They used to carry Blue Point Toasted, my favorite beer, but have since replaced it with Humming Ale. Â
A great place to chill and watch multiple sporting events on multiple tubes.
It pains my heart to see only 3 1/2 stars here for one of my favorite neighborhood bars.
Actually, I'm typing this as I am sitting, post 1-Day Blizzard 2011, enjoying some merlot with FREE FUCKING WIFI, and sort of neglecting my friend, Lena Maros..not really, she says, (you might know her, she's kind of a big deal.) as we are engaged with the internet.. passionately, might I add.
On top of being one of the more modern outlets to drink your sorrows away, it's a modern outlet where you can party or celebrate your successes on the weekend with the DJ and an ALWAYS lively Irish crowd in the background pouring their livelihood into their animated jukebox selections. C'mon, who doesn't love the Irish?
The bartenders are always more than friendly with me. One of them decided to try a Wii-Wednesday night. That's a plus for me, growing up in the Nintendo era. The food is superb for bar fare. I've had the goat cheese salad, the ultra juicy burger, pulled pork with the perfect amount of sweetness, a chocotini concoction that is like chocolate covered cherry YUM YUM-ness.
The only thing I regret is the fact that this is still a residential neighborhood bar, so you can't really expect a "poppin" or "jumpin" atmosphere except on special occasions or the weekend, and even some Saturday nights are a bust.
(I have to say, for the familiar Sunnyside, that this is the longest lasting bar in Yearrrrrrrrrrrs. From Hunky Dory to Mad House to Mai Place. I believe the curse is over! )
After having a few beers at another establishment my friend and I got hungry and decided to try this bar out. From the outside looking in, I had no idea this was an Irish bar - but definitely the mix of Irish music and rock tunes, the cute Irish waitress (who was sweet), and the accents I heard from the other patrons - told a different story.
The vibe was cool and laid back, people were friendly, and the beers were cold. Â I only tried the fries (more like fritters) but they were good. I actually only gave this place 3 stars based on my taste in what I like a bar to be. However, I think this would be a good place to pop in and have a quick bite and a few drinks with friends - but not a place I would go to hang out on a regular basis.
This update is way overdue. Â The food here (which I finally tried) is awesome. Â And everything on the special menu is magic. Â MAGIC I TELL YOU!!!! Â It tastes so good once it hits your lips. Â You can tell the chef loves his job because the specials are always different, and you can tell that he's good at his job because the food is always mind blowing. Â
Healthy portions.
Amazing price for the quality.
Did I mention great beer?
Friendly waitstaff.
Can I give this place 6 stars?
I've been coming to the place on and off for about a year - we started coming here for the UFC fights as an alternative to the always jampacked McCanns in Astoria. It's currently walking distance from my guy's place, and even though he's moving to a place far closer to McCanns, we're going to keep coming here.
First, there's about a million TVs. Last fight night(Lesnar), they had the matches on, as well as hockey, baseball, basketball and football - one of those great nights where all major sports are represented and there's too much to watch. It was a little bit of sensory overload flicking my eyes from one TV to the next, but there was definitely something for everyone and it made for a great sports bar atmosphere. This is great when it's packed for a single event too - you are guaranteed a view from wherever you are. $20 cover which used to buy you a drink with your admission, but they stopped doing that last time, and I hope they bring it back.
I'm not a beer drinker, but apparently there's some good brews on tap.
The food is SOLID. My new addiction is the steak sandwich on rosemary-garlic ciabatta - it is phenomenal. The steak is always tender, not fatty, and the combination of flavors is perfect. Always enjoy the chicken nachos, and in the past, I've had the blackened chicken wrap, as well. They made a cold potato soup over the summer that I'm still dreaming of. Â It doesn't matter if you order from the bar or the restaurant menu - everything on it is delicious and it never slips in quality from one week to the next. (I think we've all had that happen, where food is not consistent, depending on who is cooking and when, and that's definitely not a problem here).
The waitress service is a little slow when it's crowded, but I think they are routinely shorthanded - you do see the waitresses running around like mad, especially during a fight night, so maybe they need to have a bigger staff when they have larger crowds. Otherwise, the service is fine and everyone is friendly.
Also a plus, and a silly one - but they have audio in the bathrooms, so you can make a quick trip and not miss a minute of the event you came to see.
This bar definitely surprised me! I didn't expect to find a trendy and fun place like this right in Sunnyside.
Came here with a few friends on a Thursday night. It was busy, but not packed -- we didn't have to wait for a table. There is indoor and outdoor seating. Nice decor with flat screens all over the walls -- I was able to watch the Yankees, Mets, and Lakers vs Celtics games all at once!
Food was good. I had a cheese quesadilla, my best friend had chicken wings - both were really delicious. I don't remember what everyone else ate but everyone was content with their order.
They have a good selection of drinks and beer. The German Beer is HUGE and tastes great. I had a Ruby Red Cosmo (or something like that) and I thought it was a little weak but still tasty.
I'm giving it a star off just because I wish the place was bigger! Also, our group sat right next to the live band and so it was hard to hear each other. Wish the band could be placed somewhere else..
I'll definitely be returning.
Bar 43 is like a caricature of a sports bar-- from the under lit sign that changes from pink to purple to the enormous flat screen and the NFL pennants underneath; They do let you play Wii on it, which is a plus. Otherwise the decor is so painfully cliched that you start to think youre in a mall in Des Moines, not NYC.
Aside from this, if you're looking for a low rent bar to watch a game or hang out on a weeknight, this place is passable. I thought the food, although tasty, was overpriced and the service was terrible (although there was only one over-taxed waitress).
I sent a simple message to an Irish friend a couple days before visiting Bar 43 for the first time: "Where can I find the best pint of Guinness in Sunnyside?" I received a simple answer in response: "Bar 43."
I went a couple days later shortly after 5pm on a Wednesday to find the place empty except for the bar which was almost fully packed. It appeared that some had been here for hours and some others minutes, but almost all were tending a Guinness. A good sign despite the non-Irish feel of the place: modern, sleek decor and a lot of flat-screen televisions.
It did not take long for the bar to feel like being back in Ireland though, with the small quirky details emerging, the friendliness, and the bartender always taking care of you. It happened to be happy hour (weekdays 11am - 7pm, Guinness $4), so I settled in to have two pints and give the place a try.
Around four hours later I finally left, the bartender had bought my third and convinced me to stay for a fourth, then proceeded to by the whole bar a round when it was time for my fifth. It gave me a chance to also peruse the menu, which had bar food, but also a couple pages of fancy looking foods that did not seem to fit the clientele, but were said to be excellent. I stuck to the Guinness and ordered a small (read: large) basket of fries ($4).
Part of the fun here was observation, as everyone seemed to know each other. It was almost like a community center, and something of a bank as someone had brought in what looked to be a tax refund check and cashed it at the bar before beginning to drink.
First impressions:
Wow, a bar that is NOT an Irish pub, awesome!
They have a good number of taps too, it's a shame it's all full up of mediocre beers all mainstream stuff, a little bit of a rant but none of the bars here carries any decent variety beers. Â Same with this place too, 16 taps, but same ole same ole. I mean two taps of Sam Adams, yuck. If anyone in the area served magic hat, six point, orlio I will be there. Â I'll give bar43 props for having goose island.
Food looked and smelled quite good, I would like to go back and try their food. Â
The atmosphere is basic sports bar, comfortable seating, lots of TVs, music wasn't too loud, pretty decent play list when I was there. Â Not many people when I was there, I could imagine there to be a large B&T following. Â
Good addition to the neighborhood if you're looking for not an Irish pub it's a good choice.
A poem: Oh how I love thee, Bar 43. Â
My friend who lives in Sunnyside took me here for the first time a few weeks ago and we've been back a few times since. Â It's a genuinely awesome neighborhood bar. Â You can tell they spent a pretty penny to decorate the bar...there's a ton of flat screens, tables and booths. The crowd is always diverse but friendly and the bartenders, especially the (Irish?) blond girl are great. Â The first time we were there, a gnat flew into my friend's half-drunk glass of wine and the bartender gave her a whole new glass for FREE. Â The next time we were there, there were promo girls giving out free Heineken lights to everyone. Oh, and they play great music and it's never too crowded. Â If you're looking for a fun, laid back night at a bar with your friends away from the crowded pretentious of Manhattan, come to Bar 43. You won't be disappointed!
