Murphy's Bar

This is my go-to spot on the Skillman Avenue side of Sunnyside.   With the worn couches, fireplace, and windows that open wide, Murphy's exudes character and charm.  Add oysters and clams on Thursdays through Sundays - $1 a pop or $10 for a pint and six - live music, friendly  bartenders to the mix and you have the perfect neighborhood bar.  The walk down Skillman from Woodside adds to the charm too. On autumn Saturdays it almost feels like you're in a college town and folks are at the football game creating a stillness and quiet that can be rare in New York City

I finally made it here on a Saturday with a few friends to try the oysters and clams-- surprisingly good. However, I wasn't sure what to expect since the bar doesn't have a kitchen but they set up a little area with ice and bivalves and a guy to shuck them. I guess it's just that easy.

Warm, wonderful, fun, great Guinness on tap, great live music. My favorite bar!
