I was bar-hopping last night by Miracle Mile with friends and was disappointed in how early everything was closing. Â It was a weekday, so I guess I expected it, but then we came across The Bar, which was open til 2 a.m.! Â We ran into some friends outside and got to talking. Â We realized it was karaoke night and went in for some beer and embarrassment. Â We will definitely be coming back. Â I love the crowd and the beer selection...and the clean bathroom!
Review Source:I have a love/hate with this place. Sometimes I love it, other I'm like GET ME OUT OF HERE. I've found my get me out days are on Saturdays when it is only live music, maybe because the bands have sucked. Besides that Tuesday karaoke is a blast in a glass & Thursdays are throwback jams which are my FAVORITE. The crowd is a mix of hipsters and us normal folk & the age range is all over the place. It's a fun place to grab a drink with your friends just be warned they stop serving alcohol at 2. WEIRD
Review Source:I've been hearing about The Bar's Friday night happy hour for quite some time. Â Free drinks for ladies till 7??? Â Are you sure? Â The drinks are free? As in no exchange of money or services? Â Free?!?!
Yes they're free!!!! Â Yayyyyyy hip hip hoorayyyy!!! And the bar although atotal dive is actually pretty cool. Â The bartenders both female and male are actually friendly. Â The drinks were basic, I ordered a vodka tonic but again tit was free! Â And the music was good. Â Me gusta!
I like coming here with my girlfriends for Happy Hour on Fridays, even though its been a while since we've scheduled one....I like the bartenders and Dan the Doorman...
This place is definetly a dive, but I love the large selection of beers and chill vibe. You can come in dressed right from work in your buisness suit or on the other end of the spectrum you can come dressed in shorts, no matter how you're dressed, no one will bat an eye either way. They have an outside area with a couple of tables that is good if you want to step outside for some fresh air.
I have ordered a burger here before, as well as the dolphin fingers and it was decent, nothing to write home about, but certainly hit the spot while washing some beers down.
AND THEY HAVE A LADIES DRINK FREE Happy Hour on Fridays....just sayin'
I have to admit the first time I went to the bar I wasn't impressed. Â Here's why... I know that a place called "The Bar" should involve a person hanging out by "The Bar." Â That being said... do I have to stand the entire time? Â Don't they know that girls wear uncomfortable shoes 99.9% of the time? Â Don't they know that the reason we wear these shoes is in hopes that wherever we end up for the night we intend to hopefully find a sear?
Moral of the story... ladies don't wear high heels if this the location for the night. Â The odds you will get a table is zero to none.
The plus side... Ladies drink free on Fridays until 7:30 pm. Â What's the catch you ask? Â There is none. Â LADIES DRINK FREE until 7:30 pm on Friday night. Â Just take some singles and tip your bartender who will always make sure you glass is full. ;)
Just went for the first time a couple of nights ago. First thing when you walk in the door, is the smell that you'd expected from a placed that has been opened since 1946. It's not too bad and you quickly get used to it. I did go on an off night so the bartender was not only taking care of the bar, but also us sitting at a booth. Service was still prompt and excellent.
Now, the food... It was great! We started off with the cheeseburger egg rolls which were just amazing, specially with the sauce they serve it with. I ordered the Cali burger and my wife the Fish & Chips. These were freshly made and tasted incredible. Everything was made fresh, which you don't expect when walking into a bar like this.
When the server/bartender brought the bill, he already had the tip included. The 19% tip was was actually what we would've given, so we didn't even complain. I just hope that service is always that good if they include tip on a regular basis.
Overall, this place is better than other chain bars that I have been to. I will definitely keep coming back!
Every time I hit this spot it does not let me down.
Biggest downfall- how small it is, now I get it...the fact that it is that small is not a bad thing but sometimes it gets so crowded you can't even walk to the bathroom.
The best thing- hands down the music. I just walk in there and that is THE one thing I want to do till my feet can't handle it anymore.
Must take the time to check this place out if you are in town.
The Bar is a gem of a dive bar in Miami. Â You will not find your usual Lourdes Alumna dressed in full South Beach regalia. Â No, instead you will find locals or visitors drinking a lot of beer. Â This is an unpretentious spot to have a good time with friends. Â You can also enjoy their beer garden with massive TVs for any games. Â Definitely a fun spot to watch a Heat game.
Review Source:The Bar is where everybody knows your name.
If you've been coming here for years, like myself, it starts to feel like a second home. The bouncer is the friendlist guy and takes the time to ask you how your night is going and once you've become a regular he's like a new friend. It is that welcoming, relaxed and cool vibe that draws you in.
The Bar has the best djs, and some of the best deals in town. There's a different deal every night and my fave is the ladies drinking free from 5-7 on fridays for happy hour. A really great thing about this bar, too, is that you're never waiting at the bar for a drink for longer than 10 minutes. THe bartenders are very attentive. Even during those crazy nights where the place is very crowded, they do a really good job at placing everyone's order.
For me, the bar is great because it's the best of both worlds. Sometimes it is the best place to go if you are in the mood to just hang out and chill and go somewhere with a relaxed atmosphere. The Bar can be that for you from Monday- Thurs and early Friday during happy hour. If you are in the mood to dance until the wee hours of the night to the best hip hop then the Bar can be that for you on thursday and friday nights. And if you want to get crazy on a tuesday singing kareoke, the bar will be there for you too. It's all about knowing what you want and when is the right time to show up.
There's an outside patio behind the bar too. So even on those dj hip hop nights you can just hang outside. It is always more mellow in the patio. ALso, Its in the heart of coral gables and because of its location you can either start or end your night there if you're not into staying there the whole time.
This place is just okay for my taste. Don't get me wrong, I love dive bars. This place has a very casual, laid back atmosphere. And games :) And it seemed like their kitchen was open till close. But maybe I went on the wrong night. On Friday night it was anything but laid back. Crowded and loud. It was all hip hop & there were 5 fights. No thank you. Great staff. They need more bouncers though to keep an eye out. The constant cops through the place was a turn off.
I did like how they have an outdoor bar & sitting.
The black hole as I like to call The Bar is one of my favorite hang out spots. This little hole in the wall sucks you in, then spits you back out (only to remember bits and pieces the next day.) I've been coming here for quite some time and I honestly always have the best time.
Friday nights here are a blast especially since ladies drink free till 7PM. This place gets so packed you can barely walk from one side of the bar to the other. Drinks are pretty cheap, and the bartenders are for the most part fast in taking your order. Saturdays is definitely fun as well with live music starting around 10. The food isn't to bad either considering it is your typical "bar food."
The Bar is a great neighborhood hang out with good vibes and good people. I will continue to come here not only to dance my ass on Fridays, but also to drink my ass off too!
I am not that big a fan of this place. I have been here several times, usually on Friday nights, and find it way too crowded, loud and dirty for my tastes. One of the other Yelpers mentioned the owners are the same as Purdy, and I can definitely see some similarities in the music selection (including volume), clientele and general "vibe" of the place. The problem is that Purdy Lounge does not work well on a miniature scale. It is too loud for any form of conversation and the only area for dancing is a corner in the front or around the bar where patrons/servers are trying to get from point A to point B.
Since this is primarily a drinking establishment I don't think you can hold this too much against them, but food service is super slow here. Think half-hour or more for anything you order. This long wait means a lot of orders get overlooked and by the time you are able to flag a waitress down to ask about your missing cheese fries there is not point in having them any more. Granted, this place is packed at times so I think those poor waitresses are doing the best they can given the situation.
I was here on a Thursday night for a friend's birthday gathering. It was pretty fun. They had a great selection of beers and I love that they served cold Jager shots on tap. I didn't try the food, but I hear it's good. It was sort of difficult to flag down the bartenders, but that's probably par for the course at any busy bar, and I'm small and soft-spoken.
Maybe it was because I got sloshed, but the music was really amazing. It was a really neat mix of current alternative stuff and popular (top 100) stuff from like, 10 years ago. It was fun and nostalgic. Great for dancing! My friends and I had a great time.
The only reason I'm giving it a 4 star rating and not a 5, is because they sprayed the bathroom (more like BOMBED it) with insecticide during the busy hours. I went in and almost didn't come out. They also need to replenish their soap and paper towel dispensers, jeez.
This place is considered a dive, I guess only because of the location in a chic area and because it is dark and does not have loud colors and/or velvet ropes.
It reminded me of bars back home in Sweet Home San Diego. Dark, plenty of beers and good mixed drinks oh and good looking folks, plenty of tvs and good tunes playing.
Inexpensive drinks. Looking forward to trying their food soon.
The Bar has become my watering hole. Their ladies happy hour on Friday nights are great!
They have great wide variety of beer. I really do enjoy how every night has some kind of promotion/special.
It just sucks that it's getting more popular and popular (good for them, sucks for me). It gets hotter and hotter. I just hope it doesn't lose it's comfortable atmosphere.
Delicious food. Try their hamburgers and their load fries. YUM!
Been to The Bar a bunch of times after having discovered it six or so years ago, and though it's a cool little spot right off of Miracle Mile, it certainly doesn't redefine what a bar/dive should be.
What it has going for it: a really extensive beer menu that is easily accessible. All you have to do is look up. Right above the bar, wrapping around it, is a big blackboard looking thing with all the beers The Bar offers listed on it, which is a big help when the place is slammed. Trying getting your hands on a beer menu with a hundred people pushing you this way and that. Also pretty cool is that there's a patio area out back that can provide a much needed respite from the crowd inside.
What it has going against it: the place is usually way too packed to be much fun. I mean, The Bar isn't big in the first place, so when it's crammed with people from floor to ceiling, you'll find yourself confined to about one square foot of space, which is never good, especially if you're like me and prefer not to meet the late night bouquet of sweat and feet nose first.
If you ever drop by for lunch or dinner, you'll find that the bar offers a really, really good turkey club. And when I say turkey, I don't mean the sliced deli kind. You get an actual turkey breast, which is a pretty awesome departure from the norm.
All in all, The Bar is one of those places that, without fail, I frequent whenever I'm in the Gables, and I'll certainly go back, but it really isn't the kind of place that I'd set out to visit. It's not a destination in my book. More like a secondary story arc in what's hopefully a much bigger and more exciting plot.
Good beer selection and in the $5-6 range no less. Laid back, no frills kind of place. The walls are lined with booths where groups of friends can sit and play board games. The bar is situated in the middle of the establishment. Â
We were here the first Friday of the month and Giralda was closed down for street traffic with all the restaurants (and bars) having tables set up for patrons to sit, unwind, eat, drink and listen to live music.
Oh and this was new information for me, same owners as Purdy Lounge on the beach. Not a surprise at all!
When you think laid-back good old time bar you think of what else??!!!
The Bar!!
This place is def . a dive bar/ hole in the wall place.
But always end up having  a good time!
Its located on a side street in the gables and is totally a Miami local hangout!
I know they have beer specials and I like to check out the back patio....
fresh air...back bar and outdoor seating!
Friday Happy Hour Specials are:
5:30-7:30 pm
LADIES DRINK FREE WELL DRINKS AND YUENGLING DRAFTS!
Not bad heyyyyy!!!
I was bombed last time,,... had a great time with friends... danced inside, Â socialized and left happy!
Thanks "The Bar" Simplicity sometimes is just better!!!!
The bar is a solid place to go for a good time.
My favorite time to go is Fridays 5:30-7:30 beacause girls drink free yuengling (which just so happens to be one of my favorite beers)
They also have blue moon on draft & a good variety of bottled beers (try deletion if you're feeling brave)
Saturday nights are fun also, they have a band that plays until about 2 am
Bar tenders are super nice , sometimes the waitresses
Suck BUT I still have fun so I always return.
If you don't feel like driving far & are
In the coral gables / south Miami area the bar is a solid option
I prefer my bars at least crowded, no crowds here, but they do have great music, and the feel, that you stopped back to an era where you would be hip or trendy upon entering "The Bar", you'd be dark and mysterious. But, alas I wanted to see some other dark and mysterious customers. With great ambiance mixed with a bad economy, this place should be packed.
As for the food nothing is fancy here, burgers, wings, salads ect, ect. I ordered the slides, and they hit the spot.
I like this place, its got a great vine, good music and good bartender.
When I'm in The Bar I feel like I've escaped Miami, which is a good thing. I've come here a few times on a Friday night for happy hour and Bob the bearded bartender is lovely.
I went here last night and I think Saturdays are supposed to be live music night, probably just cover bands. Nonetheless, drunk girls love cover bands and I saw them dancing around everywhere.
Wonderful little place to relax and have a drink.
There is no other happy hour like happy hour at The Bar on Friday nights!!!!
Why's that?
First and foremost, because ladies drink free, yes...... absolutely FREE. (5:00 - 7:30) Of course this only includes well drinks, but hey, that's enough for me and my friends! ;) Name another place where you can have a bartender make you a Long Island Iced Tea, not skimp on the liquor, and  give it to you for free?! If you're a guy, don't worry... there are still reasons to come to The Bar. For one, you won't have to spend too much money on your lady. Second, they have a full bar, and a lot of beers for you to choose from at a reasonable price. Third, every time I come here, there's sports on the TV's!!
This place has a mix of style and character with the typical bar atmosphere; booths all around and a few scattered tables too. Inside there's an area that has a selection of different board games to take to your table and play. The only one I've ever played is Jenga, and I have to say, that is a FUN game to play after a drink or two ;) . There's also a seating area out back with a small bar for guests that prefer a quieter area. Even though it's a bar, the bathrooms were remodeled last year, and do NOT look like a bathroom you'd find in a bar. (yet another reason to love this place, ladies!)
The food here is your typical bar food: salads, sandwiches, burgers, chicken wings, nachos, and cheese fries. I've tried the chicken wings, the nachos, and the fries, all of which were pretty yummy, especially the nachos. The service here gets only 3 stars because the waitresses always disappear for way too long.
There's always good music playing, and around 10 PM they have a DJ that spins a bunch of dance music. Around this time, a small area next to the bar turns into a mini-dance floor for whoever gets the urge to shake it!
If it's a Friday night, you've got two good options here.
You can 1. make a quick pit-stop for a free drink and then head out to enjoy the rest of your night elsewhere or 2. come for Happy Hour and spend the night talking and playing board games with friends, and then throw in a few dance moves here and there!
This place hit the spot for a chill, laid back girl like me who loves good music and loves to dance. Â It was a tiny hole-in-the wall, but it was oh so wonderful! Â The music was a mix of 90s hip hop, amazing old school reggae and dancehall, and just some real feel good, chill good music. Â The DJ is mad cool and on point. Â He really wants nothing more than to see every single person having a good time. Â In this place, you can bet that everyone was dancing and doing just that. Â
The vibe in here was really cool and most people are regulars, so a lot of people know each other, and it's really a welcoming kind of spot. Â The crowd was predominately age 24-34, so you young'ns probably wouldn't be down. Â Yes, I am a young'n, but with an old soul, hehe.
It gets tight, but it was never unbearably packed. Â It was just right. Â I almost felt like I wasn't in Miami. Â The vibe was unpretentious and just be-cool-style and, get this, every single person who bumped into me tonight said "excuse me." Â Can you believe it?! Â In Miami?! Â Yes, "excuse me," "sorry," "please'" and "thank you" still exist in this city!
Everyone here loves to dance and enjoy great music and cool company, so there wasn't really a pushy vibe at all on the part of guys either, which was nice. Â I mean, it's a night club, but not the type that you leave feeling completely sleazy. Â You leave this place feeling good. Â And a chill place like this plus no cigarettes??? Â Clearly the nightclub deities sent this one down for the laid back, chill, dance-loving side in us all. Â And yes, it does get hot, but anyone who loves to dance expects it to get a little hot anyway. Â I don't know about you, but I don't go out to sit on my throne like a little princess, I go out to D A N C E!
The next time I go out, it will definitely be here! Â This place is without a doubt the Gables' best kept secret!!
NOTES:
I don't drink, so I can't comment on what others have referred to as horrible service, nor can I comment on the quality of the drinks.
I arrived around 12:30 AM on a Friday and stayed until close.
I hear the same people who own Purdy Lounge own this place. Â Based on the reviews I've seen for Purdy, that would explain the unique vibe in here.
Smack in the middle of Coral Gables, and just a stones throw from Miracle Mile and Ponce, a great place to drop by after work on a Friday night can be had. Â I happened to do so this past week and I was glad I did. Â
They have a wide assortment of quality, small batch brewed beers, mixed drinks that are never watered down and some boutique malt scotches as well (my fav.). Â Prices are fair, well, at least they don't rip-off us guys, who unlike the ladies on Fridays drink completely for FREE. Â Kind of takes the fun out of us dudes using the ol' "can I buy you a drink" line. Â : )
You can sometimes (if you're lucky) be treated to find the local "senior entertainer" who is known to be the life of the party at times.
Remember that this place is what it is, a bar (hence the name) so it's no gourmet joint. Â Go, drink, relax, then enjoy it for what it is.
I never go to the Gables for a drink during the weekend - unless it's Oktoberfest at Fritz and Franz. There's something about the whole hoity-toity vibe of the city that just doesn't jive with me. Maybe it's the miniscule street signs with Spanish names located on the floor that that irks me. Quick - what would be the best way to get to Hernando and Malaga? Unless you work or live there, I have no idea how anyone else gets around. But when one of my homies (you're my girl B!) suggested to take our party to the Bar in the Gables for good times I'm glad I listened.
There was a group of us just looking for drinks and good music. We were willing to provide the vibe. As we drove up on a Friday night, we conveniently found parking a block away on the street. There was no cover for any of us as we all walked right in. We were instantly met with great tunes and the bar was smack-dab in the middle of the floor.
The place has a very simple layout and very functional. We all went to the side of the bar and started ordering drinks.
The drinks came out fast and the bartenders were friendly. The music was loud but it wasn't obnoxiously blaring in your eardrums. It was definitely at a decibel level meant for dancing and not lounging. The DJ was off the hook! Classics, new-school,  old-school - he played it. He even threw some Stevie B in the mix and it was met with a great eruption of approval  from the dance floor - our party included.  Everyone around seemed to be having a great time.
As we were partying, I was told that the owners of Purdy own this place too. That instantly explained a lot! This place is classier and does not have the "game-room" feel like Purdy  - and that was a good thing on this night. This is a great joint to come out for a drink and - in the words of Lady Gaga - just dance. Bring your dancing shoes and come ready to get your drank on!
Great Dive Bar!
It is just that... A dive bar. Â One of the best. Â I love The Bar. Â They have happy hours specials, are always open, variety of music playing, sometimes live. Â I mean what more could you ask for from a dive bar? Â Booth seating and bar stools, dirty bathrooms and sticky floors, but neighborhood "go to" place on ANY night. Â They are always open and welcoming. Â I always have a nice time here.
Meh, that's really what I think about this place....Although perhaps my opinion could be changed with the ladies drink free happy hour. Originally, I popped in here after the Sushi Maki event with another Yelper....
Most of the people that know me know I like chill, dive bar type of places and many a Yelper has recommended this place to me. I was happy with the beer selection & it had the laid back sort of vibe I like (it was during the week earlyish 9 or so).
The thing that really turned me off about this place is that the service was terrible. The place was so NOT busy and our waitress would be gone for extended periods. It consistently took forever to get a beer & when we wanted to leave it took at least 40 minutes to find her so we could get out tab (again, it was NOT busy at all, empty bar stools and booths abound). So, that really annoyed me....
This place grows on me like my a$$. Â The more I come here, the more I love it. Â The Bar is the best dive bar in the Gables. Â This is the place i love to come with gang on Fridays for Happy Hour. Â It has an impressive beer selection. Â They also have drink specials every day, so everyone wins. Â Friday night is the best time to come. Â Ladies drink free from 5:30-7:30. Â Can't beat free drinks (sorry fellas ladies only)....The drinks are a mild in the strong department. Â But you can order as much as you drink. FTW!!! Â For the Fellas, they have a killer beer selection. Â The Bar is all the fun with out the snobby attitude of some bars. Â
The more you drink the better the food taste. Â They make a really great chicken nachos, calamari, and bacon cheese fries...yummminess. Â
For a recession-proof good time this is the place to come.
Dearest Bar...
What can I say...? Â You are still a fun place for happy hour and having drinks. Â I will give you that. Â I always enjoy grabbing a board game, a pitcher, and some friends to enjoy a nice couple of hours!
But where it all went down hill was when we decided we would eat here. Â I was here with the bf and Yendi V. Â We ordered Dolphin Fingers, Cheeseburger Rolls, a Turkey Sandwich with side salad, and a Turkey MELT. Â Dolphin Fingers were a bit fishy. Â Fail 1. Â Cheeseburger Rolls - had to be sent back because they tasted like ACETONE (nail polish remover). Â FAIL 2. Â Turkey Sandwich, supposed to be "to the plate" (meaning no bread) came with bread. Â Fail 3. Â Side salad was ok. Â Nothing special, but at least not limp or old. Â Turkey Melt came with NO CHEESE (so how was it a melt!?!?!?). Â WTF?!? Â FAIL 4. Â
Only thing worth eating: the french fries were crispy and enjoyable.
Service: pretty questionable. Â I don't think I'd call it service. Â It was more of an extreme favor to the waitress apparently. Â She disappeared often (I wish I could remember her name - Yani, I think?) for long periods of time. Â Beer and water all ran out. Â Fail. Â Then she finally came to refill, but we were not liking the food, so we asked her to send it back, which she did not like. Â Oh, and I asked her to put cheese on the turkey melt and she totally looked at me strange. Â WHAT?!
So Bar, I guess you know by now that I won't ever be eating here again. Â And for those who have not yet had the "pleasure" of this experience, BE WEARY.
Sincerely, and in all honesty,
Sabrina*
I'd give it a three for a purely selfish reason (and no, this is probably not a good reason to downgrade them to 3 but)- our group once got kicked out because the guys in our group were mooching off the ladies' drinks during ladies' night so much that they forgot to purchase their own alcohol. Oops.
But after I'm done thinking about that and regain my levelheaded-ness I realize that the place really deserves 4 stars. Â 4 stars for not being a snooty place, 4 stars for the K Cider beer that they serve which is so yummy I could drink a 12 pack by myself, and 4 stars for the music (even if the jukebox DOES get a little repetitive once in a while, but hey, that's not The Bar's fault!)
I went to this place on a Sunday night for a late dinner. My friend wanted to drink and I wanted to eat so it actually worked out really well. It's a tad on the pricey side. You'll pay the same at a Chili's for a burger but it was a very very good burger.
Sunday night actually seems like a good time to go because it wasn't packed at all. Plenty of seating. The place is kinda dark but I think it works well.
Friendly staff, speedy service and laid back atmosphere.
The Bar is a legend in its own time, anyone who has lived in Miami more than a few months knows it and most love it. And there are so many reasons to love it let's start with location.
Yes, location, location, location in the middle of Coral Gables this is a central location for anyone living in Miami-Dade county and we have all complained about the parking but never about location.
You'll often find local bands playing at this spot but this quintessential neighborhood bar has a great jukebox. Ahhh bars with good music Glory Days.
And what might be most endearing is the selection of board games, yes they even have Connect Four....
On top of all that it is usually noisy and dark, ahhhh perfect.
