Last time I was in Wilmington I visited this bar for the first time. I don't know why the hell I didn't the last time. I ended up spending most of my night here. It has everything. A great beer selection, pool tables, jukebox, and a diverse crowd. This place definitely isn't for everyone...and then again, it totally is. There were so many different walks of life that anyone could feel comfortable here. The place just reeks of comfortability. The bartenders kicked ass and the crowd was cool. Definitely a must hang when in Wilmington.
Review Source:Word on the street is that it lowers your core score to review dive bars on Yelp. Â I'll compromise and give Barbary the appropriate one star rating. Â Beware of 5 star dive bars, they may have already been invaded! Look closely for designer vans/chuck taylors, abercrombie v-necks and concert t-shirts, proving they were there. Â How did I not pick up on this sooner. Dammit. I feel like a douche.
Review Source:Haven't been tere since 2000. Â Loved everything about it including Zeus or Hercules (can't remember) the dog that layed across the floor. Â
Anyone tell me the name of the underground hideout bar I used to go to down the street? Â It's killing me. Â Rumors of spirits hangin out in the place?
Stopped in the Barbary yesterday for My Birthday ,Got in as the Bartender was just opening and mentioned My Birhday before I knew it He had a PBR and a shot of Crown in front and on the House.Thats what you call service.Sat there for a little while and watch People drifting in and out ,must say there a re some Characters around there!
Review Source:Stopped in for a quick beer with wife last month. Â First off, you don't usually find a bar this nice and seedy in this kind of area. Â Wood floor, dark, couple of folks playing pool. Â First suprise, behind the bar is the beer collection. Â They have over 100 different brands of bottled. Â A bunch of good drafts too. Â And cheap cheap cheap!!! Â Out back door, tiny little patio overlooking Cape Fear river. Â Girl on cell phone next to me selling, uhhh... "something" to a friend of hers. Â Didn't seem to be concerned at all that I was obviously not a regular. Â This was middle of day, can't vouch for late at night. Â Some "sketchy" graffiti in toilet, so who knows? Â But during day, had the nice atmosphere of a few friendly folks, some looking ruff, some dressed up, just loving "a good beer buzz early in the morning..." Â very nice, if you are from the steel belt, or certain parts of Boston, you will like the look and feel.
Review Source:First, let me state that the Barbary is not for everyone. But I love the place. $1.50 PBR pints all the time, and that's what 90% of the bar drinks. The place is almost always crowded, usually with the same people.
If you're looking for somewhere classy - go somewhere else. If you're looking for somewhere interesting, though, I haven't found anywhere with more interesting people than the Barbary.
I love this place, when i go home to Wilmington (for christmas or during the summer) its the first bar I go to. Its a great dive bar and its the only downtown bar that express the Cape Fear culture. (umm you know what i mean, i need another PBR) Cheers to all my friends in the Port City.
