Whenever I visit family on Long Island, I b-line straight to Basil Leaf. Â I have been here countless times, over countless years, during countless periods of my life. Â I've made life decisions at Basil Leaf, taken and given significant advice here, and have come here for lunch and reflection on many occassions. Â For the majority of the last few years, my family has come to Basil Leaf for Christmas Eve. Â This restaurant has become something of an institution for us. Â Locust Valley is beautiful, the staff and manager here treat us like family, and the food and drink here is always fantastic. Â The outside seating portion is also some of the most relaxing and chill outside seating of anywhere I have been on Long Island. Â This is a great place to get a bottle of white wine during the summer with a date and just chat all afternoon. Â In fact, I'd love to do just that in the near future.
Review Source:Fantastic, consistent and always reliable! We have been dining here for over 25 years! We have been through 2 owners and have never been disappointed! Food is fresh, unique and very tasty. Service is professional and attentive without being intrusive. Only problem, we don't come here enough! That will change, now that my son is older! Looking forward to more visits!
Review Source:My family has been coming here for over 20 years. It has become one of my favorite restaurants. The restaurant has two different dining areas with a different vibe, however both are comfortable and you feel like you are eating in someones home. Do not expect Italian-American food on this menu. If you frequent the Matteo's restaurants you will not be happy here. For one this neighborhood is very exclusive and the clientele is made up of people who have eaten at fine restaurants around the world. Â This food is gourmet and what you would likely find in a restaurant in Italy. Red tomato sauce cannot be found on this menu. Basil Leaf has a loyal following and it is obvious by the interactions of different parties. This is not intimidating however, and everyone is treated just as well. The service here is in my opinion half of what makes this is great restaurant. Every plate is brought out at the same time, silverware is changed with every course and your leftovers are handed to you at the door when you leave. The menu has not changed in the past few years but I would recommend the specials when it comes to the desserts. I have rarely ordered the red meat here but I notice that it has a following by the regulars here; the pastas are what I typically have, they are clearly homemade and sauces are unique. Don't forget to try a brick oven pizza; have half of one as an appetizer.
Review Source:Came here for a birthday party on a weekend. Â The party room was a comfortable size for 7 tables (9 ppl each). For a starter we had bruschetta it was pretty good. Â For our dinner we had a choice of salmon, veal, eggplant or chicken. I ordered the chicken it was really good probably four stars, however the portion was not that big, it was one piece of chicken, 3 quartered pieces of roasted potato and some vegetables. I tried the eggplant and found it plain, my Italian grandmother makes it better! Â The wait staff were nice but certainly not the fastest. Â I think it could have been different if I had just gone there for dinner. Â Overall it was good food though.
Review Source:This is one of my favorite restaurants on Long Island- the food is consistently good, the staff is friendly, and the prices are right! It is a neighborhood spot, so you may just know the person walking through the door or over a cocktail at the bar, meet them. Also, love the glow from the lighting and candles.
It contains serviceable renditions of earthy delicacies from all over the Mediterranean map. The Basil Leaf is delicious with creative Food. I bring friends all the time and everyone wants to come back.
This place is tucked in a small group of stores and looks a bit small to be a full restaurant from the outside! Inside it's bigger than it looks.. and is a nice place with a nice vibe. We had a good friends birthday dinner here a number of year back, and they were willing to create the right sized tabler for 12 or so. Very nice place, quality is good, good for lunch, better for dinner.
Review Source:I have gone to this place many times in the past... back when I was in college. Â I went there today for the first time in maybe 10 years and boty has it changed. Â Visually, it is the same place, but somehow the "magic" was gone. Â The staff was very nice... no complaints there at all. Â The food was just okay. Â Apps were boring and the wine was sub par too. Â The main pasta dish wad pretty good but the rest of what made this place special for so many years is long gone. Â Would I say "stay clear of this place?" Not at all. Â Completely acceptable place. Â Just sad that it wasn't as good as it used to be.
Review Source:Glad we stumbled upon this place for lunch! Â It caught the corner of my eye as we were driving by, so we decided to stop by and take a peek at the menu. Â We decided to give it a try especially after we saw the outdoor tables. Â It's a very cute and inviting restaurant with two indoor sections separated by a lovely outdoor area with about 8 tables. Â We were immediately greeted by the kind waiters and given warm bread with butter(@ the perfect temperature) and a delicious tomato spread! Â The olive oil they served was definitely not your average and went well with the spread! Â I honestly could have eaten that as my meal. Â We ordered the margherita pizza and their basil leaf salad. The pizza was very tasty and perfectly crisp right out of the brick oven. Â I could have used more basil but it was still tasty regardless. Â The salad was simple but very delicious. Â It contained artichokes, pine nuts, and shaved asiago drizzled with a light lemon vinaigrette. Â I didn't know salad could taste this good with very few ingredients! Â I can't wait to come back here!
Review Source:I Â have had great pleasure to frequent this restaurant with my family on many occasions. You will never be disappointed with Basil Leaf this is one of the few last restaurants that continues to deliver constant great meals with excellent service. Whether your in the mood for baked clams, steak, or a pasta dish please be ready to enjoy the great flavors Basil Leaf delivers. Basil Leaf is definitely in my top 3 favorites in the New York area.
Review Source:really great place for good home cooking. Â the ingredients are very fresh and everything tastes light and easy to digest. Â the salads are very good. Â the linguine alla pescatore is very good with lots of fresh mussels, clams, squid, and shrimp. the marina sauce has that great homemade taste to it. when the specials are available try the osso buco and the baked branzino. Â the specials are really delicious.
dining room is nice and quiet. Â they have several dining rooms so you can dine casually for any occasion. staff is pleasant. no parking problems in this place, which is key for long island.
Hidden Italian.
The Basil Leaf Cafe is a sweet little spot hidden in a small shopping strip - you can blow by it in a second if you are not looking for it.
The restaurant is small, but not teeny. Â The bar is pretty small - but you can still pop in there and have a glass of wine.
There are a couple of dining rooms and a patio area in the summer - but it is the food that is damn good here.
Actually- beside the yummy food, the prices are pretty decent especially when you factor in the area where it is located. Â Personally we love the pizzas that come from the wood fired oven - but everything we ever had was good.
Definitely a place to hit when in the area.
