Ugh. I cannot get past the service at this restaurant to talk about the tasty, heaping portions of food (spaetzle in the casserole appetizer!) or the fantastic draft root beer (free when you check in here!) or their selection of beers (try a flight!). Unfortunately, it's the only thing really worth mentioning.
I ate here on a Friday evening with my boyfriend and the service I received was both phenomenal (our server) and horrid (the hostess).
Honestly, our waiter was one of the best servers I've had in months, and I don't say that lightly. Overall, my experience at Chicago bars and restaurants has been pretty good (less so in Lincoln Park, for what it's worth), and this gentleman was no less than stellar. He was prompt and witty and had great recommendations. We really enjoyed everything about being seated at one of his tables.
Of course, it's the person who seated us there that that makes me not want to return (which is a pity, because, again: the food! the root beer! the beer!).
In a nutshell, she and I disagreed about how and when my boyfriend and I were seated. Suffice to say that I had waited for a table and she chose to seat others before us, and I brought this to her attention. She rolled her eyes, sighed heavily, and actually WAGGED HER FINGER IN MY FACE, telling me that I didn't have the whole story, during our interaction together. Now, I realize that everyone has bad days and I realize very clearly that she did not like me, but I cannot reconcile this behavior.
So, food? Root beer? Beer? (Not to mention: awesome waiter, location, and history of the establishment!) Sorry, but I cannot take these into account. She is the first person patrons see when they walk into The Berghoff and she made the strongest impression of all.
(Edit to add: Dangit, I just cannot give this 1 star because our waiter was AWESOME. Kudos to him.)
My boyfriend and I went here on Valentines Day before seeing "The Book of Mormon." I was skeptical because of what I had read on yelp before.
We were surprised by the food. We LOVED the potatoe pieogries, and everything else that we had. Bread basket wasn't the greatest, but the sausage platter was amazing! It wasn't the hottest it could have been, but still good.
The service was average, and the waiter was respectful of our time constraint. We were out the door on time. We would definitely come back again.
