When I first heard this place was about to open two years ago, I got very excited.  I am native German, so once in a while I crave some good German comfort food that reminds me of my moms cooking....

The downtown Renton location is fairly easy to access by public transportation, however, if you drive make sure to not use the adjacent empty space (it's not meant to be a parking lot, I believe), if you  don't want to ruin your car - especially in the dark.

Once you step into Berliner Pub, you are greeted by a very inviting, loft-like open space, with a bar to the left and a cozy fireplace, as well as outdoor seating in the back. Pretty awesome. As is the beer selection. They did not have my favorite German beer, which is Augustiner, but then, neither do any other German establishments I have come across in the state of WA. No harm done, but no brownie points either in that regard.

The menu has expanded since they first opened, which is good news for most, I suppose. Especially for those who have previously enjoyed "German" food in Leavenworth (or Epcot in DisneyWorld, for that matter), and liked it. It's the same premise, "German" food done by "non-Germans", neither particularly authentic nor particularly enjoyable for my taste. - And please, if you must offer mustard with your pretzels (yikes!), can you at least also offer some butter - cause that would be more authentic.

Still, great venue, and good selection of beers. And they do not only show soccer games, they even organize trips to Sounders games, if Fussball is your cup of tea.

If they improve their menu, and the speed of their service, this could turn into a really amazing place!

Fantastic authentic German bier! Great bratwurst, pretzel and you HAVE to try the fried pickles! Best appetizer this side of the Milky Way. The beer selection could do with some NW favorites, but there's a German beer here for any beer snob to enjoy regardless of preference; plus! The bartenders know which you would prefer based on your favorite style of beer. My regular bar from now on!

Out of the few places I've visited in Renton, this was definitely the spot to hang out at! I got this red gummy bear cocktail and it was quite delicious. I also heard their pretzels were delicious so I had to try it! Got the one with 2 different mustards, very soft and large! Definitely something to share. Also had their fried pickles.. I've never had this before so it was pretty interesting to try. They give you a good amount as well. Can't go wrong with these snacks. A nice place to hang out, have a beer and talk. They also have an outdoor area with a small fire pit.

I'd definitely come back here to hang out!

We were hungry at 7pm on a Saturday in Renton, so spurred on by good yelp reviews and a love for German beer and food, we stopped by the Berliner Pub.

My review can be summed up with one word: Yipes .

First was the pothole filled parking lot. Then was the sketchy dudebros loitering outside. Then we walked inside and a pack of wild children screamed by us. Beyond them was darkness and a wall of sound - dueling pianos and a mass of drunk adults acting like college students at a meat market bar in Fremont assaulted the senses.

Disoriented and thoroughly sketched out, I looked at the host who looked back at me equally disoriented. I guess it was crazy talk that we were looking for dinner at this time at night because they were full and would be for eternity (he gave us no wait time, just a head shake). That was fine. We headed straight to the Red House down the street and had a delicious and peaceful time there.

Every time we pass the Berliner, we laugh about our time trying to eat there. What a horror show.

To start with, the pub is a cold, run-down, cavernous dark hole.  We went mid-afternoon and a Saturday so the place was practically empty.  When we walked in we were completely ignored.  I had to go to go to the bar to ask for menus.  With the cool reception and general feel of the place we opted to just have pretzels and german chocolate cake.  The pretzels were freshly baked but the dough was a bit old. The cake was good but service was slow and our waitress was clearly disinterested.

My first impression of the place was surprised!! It's so big and roomy inside!  And the seating is open just like in Germany.  :) So, on a busy night, don't be surprised if you find yourself sitting at a table with people you don't know!

After perusing through the drink menu, I saw they had radlers... RADLERS!!!
(half beer half 7-up, in Germany it's not 7-up it's another soda that's way better, but I'll take what I can get)

Waitstaff is *perfect*, just like in Germany!  You have to wave them down to get their attention to place your order. And after being served our beers and a pretzel we were waiting somewhat impatiently to have our dinner orders taken. One because we had been sitting there longingly wishing that she would pay attention to us, but also because they have a wonderful selection of sausages.

And once your food is done (sitting on the counter top for all to see), the lovely waitress is no where to be found - oh wait - there she is! Out back talking to her friend while our food sits there getting cold.  We weren't the only ones; there was another table who's food sat there forever while the young lady took her
    t ... i....m....e.

When we did get our food it was very good and overall I really enjoyed myself and look forward to going back very soon.  The have radlers!!

    :)

I'd prefer to give the Berliner 2.5 stars: they earn a high score for their beer offerings (even served in appropriate glasses!), decent "authentic" German food offerings (including pretzels the side of both hands), and fun atmosphere in which to watch the Sounders; but a very low score for their service.

They have an array of seating, with a few TVs throughout, so you can bring the whole crew. The lower seating area boasts a projector, where the soccer viewing is held. Although, be warned that the seating here is a bunch of long tables with long (very hard) wooden benches; so be willing to sit elbow-to-elbow with strangers and be a bit uncomfortable.

What really kills the rating here is the service. The pub appears to be constantly understaffed, leaving the waitresses very grumpy and almost completely inattentive. We have come multiple times, hoping that it would improve, but have had this experience consistently, with different waitstaff nearly every time.
We've actually begun to order a couple of beers when we first arrive, to last us the whole time we're there, because it takes 25-30 minutes for them to be poured and served.  (It also does not take any less time if you approach the bar yourself to order).

On our last visit, our friends ordered a boot to share (20 oz) and another friend ordered the same beer in a 20 oz stein. Should be the same price, right? Wrong. They were charged a "boot fee" of 2 bucks...which I'm pretty sure the waitress just made up when we asked why the same beer in different glasses didn't cost the same. They had put their credit card down as collateral, in case they broke the boot, so why would there be an up charge?

There are plenty of bars in the area; we won't be returning to pay for poor service any longer.

the food was ok. nobody in the place is even German. the back of house is all Hispanic... at a German pub? they messed with the lighting ALL night. it kept getting annoyingly darker as the night went. the beer menu is out of date. positives? LOTS of parking.

Okay, does parking suck? Yeah. It's bumpy in a tiny Civic, but for us it was worth it. I have never seen our twins devour corn dogs so fast! My husband and I shared the Berliner Patter and ERMEHGERD! It was amazingface. I can't wait to go back, maybe without the twins one night. Momma needs more!

This place is legit.  Great beer selection, amazing service, great ambience, friendly patrons, and the beer cheese soup is "phenomenal", I'd liken it to a religious experience actually.

Jessy, and Trey, our servers, busted their asses all night while making sure everyone was taken care of and was having a great time.  This place has my vote

It's a new experience every time?  Yeah, pretty much.  This was my 4th visit to Berliner.  Once was heavy metal music so loud you couldn't hear what your companions were saying.  Twice a very nice experience with good service and atmosphere.  Then this past Saturday night while a singer performed 80's hits, young children ran amuck bouncing balloons off you and your table.  Uh, I thought this was a bar and realize that it does serve food, but this is after 9PM on a Saturday night.  Our server took about 8-10 minutes to greet us, getting to a larger table that arrived after us first. We only saw her a couple more times that night.

I have no problem with the food or the great selection of beers.  I wish I had the time to try them all!  I had the chicken curry and while I don't believe that's a traditional German dish, it was delicious.  Wish it had an accompaniment such as a veggie or pita bread.  My dinner partner had the pork shank which was very good and served with potatoes and a sour red cabbage dish called Rotkohl.  Unfortunately the cabbage juice spread to the potatoes.  The salad was good though and extremely good sized.

I'll be back again, but realizing I shouldn't have any expectations.  I'd like to rate 2.5 stars, but since I can't rounding up to a 3 to reflect the beers and food.

Important tip - the gravel lot (with all the giant pot holes) is no longer a parking area for the Berliner! Hopefully this will get to you before you park there and have to go back to your car and find another spot.

I have to say that parking isn't very easy anymore, there is a lot across the way that is pretty much guaranteed to be full now and street parking is limited. You might have to walk a few blocks.

It's loud in here. It's lots of friends and family having a good time, getting up and walking around the table, enjoying good beer and german favorites. Awesome pretzel with stone ground mustard, check. Foot long brat with grilled bun and sourkraut, check. Enormous assorted meat and cheese plates, check. Chalkboard full of beers with names you probably struggle to pronounce, check. Happy hour 4-6, with great prices on the food. I like this place.

Maybe this just wasn't for me.

I'm not much of a beer drinker, and even if I was... We got there and our friends who had arrived earlier warned us that a lot of their beers weren't available. For a pub, that seems problematic.

Acoustics were pretty bad, felt like I was having to yell too much. Also, they only had two girls serving at happy hour. Bad plan. We were there at five and barely had time to order a second beer before happy hour ended. The server had to get our first order twice, which meant we had to wait for it even longer. She was trying hard, but clearly overwhelmed.

That said, most of the group had a beer they liked, and the food was extremely well priced at happy hour, $5 for a sausage or burger that could be shared by two unless you're wanting dinner.

Probably won't go out of my way to come back though.

This place has all the charm needed to fulfil for it to be a German styled bar. They gave a very diverse selection of German beers on tap as well as in bottle. The food portion are excellent. I planned to have the signature pretzel and then a burger but the pretzel was more than enough. My wife got the cheese platter as well as the pâté and couldn't finish it either. The cheeses were very good choices. We will be back to try more!

Great little German pub in Renton!  Can accomodate large parties and the food is good.  The bratwurst is especially good as they make it themselves...not the greasy, fatty, chunky brats you're used to but a smooth flavorful foot long uber-brat!  Happy hour is awesome for cheap huge hot soft pretzels with multiple mustards.  Don't forget the broad selection of German beers either.  Did I use enough adjectives?  Check it yourself and add some more!

Good beer, good frankfurters, and good sized pretzel!

Service isn't too bad, but it's not consistent either and parking has never been difficult.

I think this is the best German restaurant in Renton that can accommodate large parties and have good food, so I enjoy coming here every so often.

Had dinner and some brews there on Sunday, March 3rd. Large selection of german beers on tap and we tried several. Had the pretzel which was very good and the Landjaeger which are thin beef sticks as appetizers. Shared the Berliner Plate which had 5 different sausages and the Jager Schnitzel which was huge. Enjoyed the Spaten and prices are pretty reasonable.

The only place for German fare in the Renton Area.  Quality beer selection if you like German/Belgian style beers.  Nothing too remarkable food-wise; it's your usual assortment of different sausages, wiener schnitzel and general pub food.  I would give it a higher ranking if the service was better.  The last couple times I've been there  the waitresses seem to forget your order or your beer and take forever.  I'd rather have better service than shorter skirts on the waitresses.

This place is easy to find with good parking. I went around four thirty on a Saturday. I wanted to get a seat at the bar so I got there early. I was served delicious beer promptly and eventually ordered the original sausage plate for dinner. It was literally a foot long and came with a bun, kraut, and way too much potato salad. All the food was excellent.  When I left around six fifteen they had a live band playing polka and the atmosphere was shifting towards a traditional drunk German restaurant that I happen to love.

Love this place!  Awesome beer, great service,  and tasty food!  I love the big pretzel, the dill fries, and the housemade sausages.  The owner is wonderful and really cares about the community.  We are lucky to have such a great place in Renton!

I LOVE this place. I love the beer selection, the awesome glasses they are poured in and the staff and owners. I always feel welcomed here and on my first visit I was allowed to taste various beers before settling down on my fave. Most places don't offer such one on one attention from the owner (who never reveled himself). I typically only going during down time (Sunday afternoon, before 5 on Saturday, happy hour on Monday), so I've never experienced the place while it's crowed.

The only downside for me is the menu. I'm not a big fan of brats and other German food, but I do like what I've had so far. However, I don't go there for the food, so as long as the beer is cold and the half liters and liters are filled, it's all good. Also, I feel it's a little pricey, but definitely well worth it.

We frequent this bar at least once a month. It can get crowded on weekends for dinner but the crowd seems to move fast so you aren't without a table for too long.
Love the pate and the assorted sampler sausage plate. Can't go wrong with those!
Great beer selection. One of the only places my husband can find a dunkle!
Good portions. Good Food. Priced reasonably for the experience of being in a German bar. Keep a good tab of what you ordered if you come. Seems it never fails, especially if we are with a big group, the waitresses always goof and mix up the bills.

With wonderful playbacks of Beerfest going through my head, I am happy to recommend The Berliner to any person interested in drinking tasty beers and eating food, food and MORE food.

Ambiance: Awesome. Beer steins on the wall, full bar, fire pit, tables upon tables. Beer listings. Dirndl dresses everywhere.. what more can you ask for? Turnovers for tables are pretty quick but if you have a large party, be sure to stake your claim quickly!

Staff: Sometimes can be slow to get to you and your table. For the most part friendly and fast. Last time we were there, the manager came by to check on our table, which was nice. Be sure to have the waitresses repeat your order and be check your bill. We had some crisscrossing of items on our last visit.

Selection: German food and lots of it! Not a huge huge menu, but enough to satisfy anyone's hankering for Wiener Schnitzel. Plenty to try as well - for the adventurous. =) What do we usually get? Here are the go-to nommeries....

Braunschweiger - Germany's answer to paté
Brätzel - Our now famous pretzel served warm with 2 different mustards
Pommes mit Curry Ketchup - Fries with Henning's recipe curry ketchup
Die Berliner Platte - 5 Sausages - Berliner Bratwurst, spicy cheese, cheese, Bockwurst and chicken Andouille Served on a platter with grilled sourdough bread, sauerkraut, cornichons and mustard
Deep Fried Pickles - Pickle chips coated in our own batter and fried. Served with ranch

What about the beeeeeeeeeeer they say... Yes, yes.. and beer..

They have two dunkels on tap - (alas, their online beer menu just went boo bunk so I can't tell you specifically what they are. But I will update this when I do see it. They also have Strongbow cider, which is a good choice for you non beer enthusiasts. Or for the fruity beer lovers - there is always the lambic framboise beer! yum!

Price: Fair. From the alcohol to the food, the price for all these wonderful things is at an even keel.

Overall: Would I come back? of course! I've been here quite a few times already and each time has not been a disappointment. Beer loves and Schnitzel devourers unite! Berliner is theeee spot! My only qualm would be the lag on the waiting service, and order accuracy, but both are easy to improve upon.

    Prost!

DO NOT ORDER THE GRAHAM CRACKER MARTINI ... or whatever the hell it's called. It contains Barenjager, Jagermeister, Baileys, Goldschlagger, and maybe one other type of alcohol. The only good thing was the graham cracker rim. In theory, this should be one badass drink! It wasn't. It was horrible. Maybe it was the way it was made?? Not sure, but I don't recommend it. What a disappointment!

Stick to one of the many fantastic beers they have, and I CAN vouch that the pretzel was DAMN good!!!

I'd go back... but I definitely will not be ordering that drink again.

I just got back from Leavenworth not too long ago and I ended up at this place a couple days later.

It was a co-worker's idea to come here.  I ordered the Käsewurst.  It took some time before food arrived at our table.  Everyone got their order except for me.  A co-worker was worried about my order so she asked a server (different from ours) where my order was.  That server got a hold of our server and 10 minutes later my Käsewurst arrived.  She apologized and said she didn't know why my order took so long.  Either she just forgot to put my food order in or there were communication issues with the kitchen staff.  My Käsewurst was hot and my potato salad was delicious.

    To wrap it up:
    Service-Slow.  I wish I had another server.
    Food-Excellent.
Beer-Great, based on what my co-workers ordered.
Ambiance-Very open.  It is a good place for large groups.  We had to ask a server to turn the lights back up because it was too dim.  Other customers around us appreciated our request.

Another great pub in Renton! The first time I visited, I was surprised at how large and "fancy" the place was. It's a great place for a large gathering as there are multiple large benches for seating. It's also a great place for a low-key date or a quick drink with friends.

As expected, they have a large selection of beers. Although I'm not a huge beer fan, I try to taste something different each time I go. The food that I've had so far has been really delicious. The pretzel is definitely a must. Crusty on the outside and soft on the inside with just the right amount of salt. The beer and cheese soup is rich and cheesy but I would not eat it as a soup as it's just too heavy. It's perfect as a beer and cheese dip (hint: dip the pretzel in it). The last time I went, I ordered the jager schnitzel. The schnitzel was crispy and smothered with a mushroom gravy. The spatzle was a good contrast to the schnitzel. The red cabbage though I could have done without. I left it behind and ate everything else.

I'm looking forward to going back and trying more things!

Pro(s): Good, quality German beer on tap. Possibly good happy hour prices on beer but I haven't confirmed yet (just from what other reviews indicate). Non-happy hour price was just barely acceptable at $5.50 for half liter of Paulaner Salvator (they were actually out of both selections of Paulaner they sometimes carry).

Cons: I was charged $2 extra for a salad without being informed that was an extra charge on a meal. The foot long bratwurst was probably more like 10", possibly 9", and was pretty thin and tasteless (basically unseasoned, un-inspired boiled beef and/or pork).
The saurkraut tasted like steamed cabbage with a dash of vinegar - real saurkraut in my book is salt fermented (brined), this was not.
Meal was served with a jumbo sized hot dog bun (with a grill mark or two to snazz it up), I was unimpressed and left that aside.

The only way I see myself coming back here is if their happy hour beer prices are good (somewhere in the neighborhood of under $3/pint, but I would accept $4). I doubt I will give their food another shot because the signature dish was thoroughly unimpressive.
Ended up costing me over $20 for this lackluster plate of food and 1 beer, far too much for what I got in my opinion.

Someone open a good restaurant/bar/pub in Renton please.

This place is exactly what it should be, a German pub. They have TV's next to long bench tables for large groups for big games and lots of tables of all different sizes, great place to meet friends for drinks. Their beer selection is fantastic! All German imports. They have really great bratwurst and potato salad served warm or cold depending on your liking.

There is a great little patio that has a cover, so its great for those rainy Seattle spring days.

I suggest getting the pomme frites with curry ketchup or the pretzel for an appetizer. Be prepared for good beer sold by the liter choose from .3, .5, 1 or 2 liters of beer.

    Trivia night is the Schnitzel!!!

This pub is more than just a pub, first off it's bigger than I imagined. When I think of pub, I think of small dinky place. Not here!  This place is pretty big and very spacious.

I came here for triva night with some friends and had a great time. I ordered the Yaeger Schnitzel and it was delicious, although I could go without the pickled cabbage but that's just me.

This is probably one of the best bars in Renton. I love the atmosphere and the crowd. Unfortunately most of the Renton bars I've been to draws the most unappealing crowd. I won't tell you what I mean by that, buy my fellow Rentonians should know what I am talking about.

Beer selection is AH-mazing.  Seriously.  It's the first page on the menu!  The sausages are delectable, and the variety of food is mouth watering.

There are a couple of reasons why I'm giving this place three stars instead of five.  The potato salad was very heavy on the vinegar, and the karaoke bar was incredibly loud.  My friend and I were yelling at each-other just so we could continue our conversation.  I was worried I'd lost my voice the next day.

I like deep fried foods. I like pickles. Deep fried pickles are amazing and The Berliner Pub provides a giant basket full of them! These tasty little crispy treats are enough to gain a pound or two! The waitresses are all very nice, prompt, and courteous. My friends love the giant glasses of beer. Their burgers are scrumptious.

Their parking lot is a bit atrocious, so park across the street or on the street. Seriously there's divers in the parking lot large enough to make a kiddy pool out of them. The ambiance is great, but it can get stifling hot inside in the summer. I haven't experienced how it does in the winter.

Great atmosphere with lots of open space--bench seating, outside patio, pool tables.  The owners are super nice too!

Huge selection of delicious and unpronounceable German beers.  Try to finish the 3-LITER DAS BOOT!

Fave snacks are the FRIED PICKLES and CURRY FRIES.

I hate German beer, I hate pool, I hate Renton, I hate fireplaces and I'm Austrian.... so why go??

    THE SCHNITZEL!!!!

Probably the best schnitzel I've had outside of Austria :0

The pretzel was fantastic and the sausage pretty good too!

So if you're craving a good schnitzel, blow all the other "german" pop stands and come here.

This place ROCKS! It has a great atmosphere with the little open fireplace, pool tables, and plenty of seating. It's a nice open layout and I hear the outside patio out back is great too. Unfortunately I went in the Winter and it was way too cold to be out there, if it was even open.

With such a HUGE German beer selection, who needs Leavenworth? Or Oktoberfest for that matter? J/K...seriously though, great selection of beers and mug sizes ranging from pint to bicep-workout-inducing, all at reasonable prices. Bartenders are cool as shit too. Just be careful in the adjacent dirt parking lot. There are some gigantic crater-like potholes, so unless you've got some ground clearance in your ride, you're safer parking on the street or their parking lot ACROSS the street.

Service was again amazing.  Beer was perfect, cold and prompt.  I had the HH burger and it was totally worth the $5 price tag.

The back wall is now painted black and has menu items listed, and really everything is perfect.  I love the fire place table area but it almost puts you to sleep (warm + beer + food = nap).  We will back, because this place is great!!

Overall, Berliner was okay.  Service was good - responsive and friendly.  We liked too that without a bat of the eye, they let us split our tab onto two cards.  Though I did not drink, this pub serves mixed drinks (with a happy hour from 4 to 6) in addition to their rather vast selection of German beer.

However, this was one of those dinners that seemed a little off kilter.  My dining companion was inexplicably late (something about having to chase a dog down a hill), topped off with coming out of the Berliner afterwards and finding I had a flat tire.  Speaking of their parking lot, it is unpaved and full of ruts and rocks.

We ended up at Berliner because somebody wanted to hoist a German beer (personally, I can't stand German beer).  BTW, this used to be a bar named "Pounders".   I love that name.  We saw here an autographed poster of David Hasselhoff.  Remember the video Hasselhoff's daughters took of him drunkenly eating a hamburger off the floor?

For starters we ordered the deep-fried pickles and fries with curry catsup.  The fries are a bargain because you get a huge platter of decent shoestrings for just $2.  However, the curry catsup was an abomination before the Lord.  I don't  know if it had any curry flavor but it was terrible.  The fried pickle chips (served with a ranch dipping sauce) were okay.

For my entree, I ordered the Jäger Schnitzel ($14).  This dish was comprised of Rotkohl (red cabbage), a skinny breaded pork schnitzel, and spätzel.  The Rotkohl was excellent, with the perfect tang.  The schnitzel was okay and so was the spätzel.  However, what ruined the spätzel for me was the brown sauce they poured over it.  The sauce was groaning with thyme, rendering the spätzel inedible.

My dining companion opted for the Berliner Pub Schweinshaxe ($16).  This dish contained three pork shanks (leg meat on the bone), warm German potato salad and a grüner salat (side salad).  The pork shank was good with an interesting glaze made from rum, blackberries and horseradish.  The glaze tasted mostly of the berries and was quite sweet.  Berliner's "hot potato salad" was very basic - hot cubes of potato with a little bit of vinegar (but it wasn't tart).

Speaking of this being an out of kilter evening, it was a weird that a couple tables away, a middle-aged lady with Kent/Auburn/Southend hair kept looking over and glaring at me.  What did I do?  :-)

So happy that I found a german bar close to home. I used to go to Shultzy in the U.Dist all the time. Now that I'm no longer always in that area, this is my new go to place.

Pretzel hits the spot, and beers are amazing.

When was the last time you went to a bar, and all they had were german/euro beers? even in bottles. Not a single american beer in sight. That's dedication.

Eating here is almost a transporting experience.  Wait, am I in Europe?  Or downtown Renton?  Huge difference there, but not when you walk into the Berliner.

All the food was really good.  Here are some items of note:

Bratzel was kind of amazing.  Look at those delicious grill marks!  Mmm!  Served warm with rock salt and two kinds of mustards.  Sweet yet salty.  To die for!

Cheese plate was impressive.  They didn't skimp on the high-quality, European cheese and it is served with grilled bread and sauerkraut.

I thought their sauerkraut was really good - not wet or soggy, and with a strong beer flavor that compliments the sausages well.  It's also good alone!

You have a choice of the fries or the chips with your meal.  Get the CHIPS!  They are homemade and far more remarkable than the fries.  Shoestring fries with curry ketchup were okay.  I'm not a fan of curry ketchup, but they get an E for effort!

I'll be back!  Oh, I'll be back!  I think especially for HH!  A gem in downtown Renton!
