Excellent beer, and good service. Two complaints: not much seating and they close ridiculously early (11 pm?). Come here for the beer!

I know why there's so many 4 and 5 star reviews for this place, I completely get it.  I'm coming in with a rare 3 stars.  Obviously the selection is huge.  I believe they said, "over 900 selections in the cooler."  Which i've seen 90% of the same beer at Market of Choice.

My friend and I settled at the bar prepairing to consume pints of beer.  Reading through the beer menu, there wasn't much that piqued our interest. There were 2 IPA's, and lots of Ambers and Ales.  Considering we both love IPA's and all the hoppy goodness it contains, Ambers and Ales have fallen off our list of brews to drink.  Just not enough hop to it.  Dont get me wrong, Abominable Winter Ale is a winner for sure, there are a few out there, but not at The Bier Stein.

I did find an IPA from Anderson Valley brewing that wasn't too bad.  It was 8.5% yet really smooth drinking. Where am I going with this? As my friend and I were drinking the beer, we wanted something else hopefully a bit better.  So we asked for a taster.  Holly shit was that a mistake...

The first 2 tasters of 0.5 ounces of foam were interesting.  We worked with what we had, and though we were *kinda* able to tell if we wanted it or not, it was pretty sad to get a literal .5 ounce of foamish beer.  Mind you we are paying for brews this whole time.  When we asked to taste something else, the bartender decided to lay the law.

******Hear Ye! Hear Ye!....Thou hast broken the law of foam!!******

Since we already tried two foam tasters we had reached our limit...ALTHOUGH we were allowed JUST ONE MORE. You're kidding me right?? You're gonna roll your eyes and act like an ass over tasters that have more foam than beer? Bullshit! I would like to know who came up with this narrow minded, business detouring idea.

We love drinking good beer, but the thought has clearly never crossed their mind that maybe we wouldn't have to keep tasting if we could find A GOOD BEER to get a full pint of.  We had already bought a few beers, it's not like we walked in off the street, demanded 10 tasters and walked out the door.  Their view of "tasting" is completely backwards.  Perhaps enforce that "rule" when someone is trying to abuse the system.  Dont be an ass to the 2 guys with their wallets out ready to spend X amount of $ on delicously brewed beer.

Since what they had on the board was a miss, we split a 22 of GoodLife's Descender IPA and bailed.  We were gonna be pretty bummed if we didn't at least have 1 solid awesome IPA.

In summary:  Service was great up to the point the lady had to be a foam nazi, Beer selection wasn't too impressive, didn't try the food, which I would like to do if I'm still allowed to visit after breaking the sacred rule of foam.

    Cheers!

Tons of beers to choose from in the coolers that line the walls and an always amazing, rotating tap list. The staff is helpful and super friendly.

Of course the Bier Cheese soup is the standard favorite, and it's great, but they also have a full menu of other great sandwiches and apps. Everything can be done vegetarian friendly, made with Tempeh. I personally love the Tempeh Reuben.

The only downside is that it's often quite difficult to get a place to sit. The place isn't that large, and it fills up quick and gets a bit loud. The lighting is kind of oddly bright as well. Though soon this will change as I hear that they are moving to a new location in February, 2013.

Check out this place if you are in town for sure. If you are a beer lover then the Bier Stein is an absolute must.

I travel to a lot of beer tap rooms and this one was OK. It had an impressive set of coolers and I could see coming here a lot if I loved here. The service was a little awkward though and didn't really help me with what was on tap. Maybe it's because we weren't eating? In any case, I was disappointed with my experience. The tap selection was pretty uninspired but the cooler selection was swell. It does have a nice ambiance though.

This place is beer-heaven for many of my college guy friends - and I've had some great times here myself. The staff is very knowledgeable and easy-going, and the beer-cheese soup is just ridiculous.

They get five stars for the selection - they have more than 1,000 varieties, and odds are you'll be hard-pressed to not enjoy yourself if you're a beer lover. The atmosphere feels like a more brightly-lit European pub in that it's always packed with locals and visitors alike, and almost everyone's having a good time.

Definitely worth a stop if you're in the Eugene area.

The bier list is top tier- to find Ten Fidy on tap in this languishing town that spawned the likes of Animal House and millions in Nike endorsements made my loins surge in pure joy.

With over a thousand different varieties, it's easily the biggest and best beer shop in Eugene, and they claim to have the largest selection between Portland and SF!!!

All of the bottled beers purchased can either be taken to-go, or can be drank in-house, which is really nice so you can try a beer before knowing if you want to buy a couple (or a couple dozen) more :-)

They also have a very respectable lunch and dinner menu that gives you a chance to pair all of those beers with a burger, sandwich, salad, etc.  My personal favorite is their Reuben!

My biggest word of caution is that it's located pretty close to the UofO campus, so it has a large number of students going, which usually isn't a problem, but on a weekend night you can definitely get unlucky with some ruckus duck fans :-P

So many beers! This place has quite a long list of delicious beers with around 10 on tap at all times, which are switched up regularly. I love this place for its delicious beer and really good food, however they switch up the taps a little too fast for me hence the 4 stars, which im sure some people prefer and if I did I would give this place a 5 star rating too. Great vibes in the place and your food is served hot and ready. Their sandwiches are quite delicious

Hours are a little early for a bar - however, their beer selection is second to none. They always have great seasonal brews on tap, plus an enormous bottle selection. Friendly staff and a laidback environment make this place a great hangout spot to enjoy some of Oregon's best beer.

Ended our recent Eugene adventure with this place, and it couldn't have been more perfect. All the beers we can't get in our home state were there. And I might have peed my pants a little when I saw they had Russian River's Pliny the Elder on tap. Truly a must-try for any beer lover...and all the other taps were intriguing as well (honey-ginger-lime-sour beer? yes please!)

The place was completely full when we got there, but we got a brew anyway and just kind of loitered by the bar until something opened up. It only took about 2 minutes until we were sharing a long skinny table along the front window. Had a few different groups sitting next to us and everyone was friendly. The bartenders were super cool, the prices were unbeatable ($5 for Pliny!). Any beer lover who finds themselves in Eugene would be silly not to stop by here.

Pros:  Good selection, good prices - one of the cheapest places in town to drink beer besides in front of your TV (again).  Pretty decent sandwiches; you could make better yourself, but you probably won't so you might as well get off your couch, head to the Bier Stein, and wash one of theirs down with a couple of beers you won't find many other places in town.

The staff seems to really know their beer.  If you are the kind of person who takes beer very seriously, you'll be fascinated to learn that Nurfringschrecklichbrau is made with rare Alsatian hops that were smuggled in the keesters of dedicated brewery employees during World War II, or some other equally fascinating tidbit that makes you think you're special for drinking the stuff.  But, even if you just think beer is a nice occasional distraction and not a lifestyle, you might find it useful to consult an expert who can steer you to something new that matches your personal preferences.

Cons:  Full of people who exemplify the fact that 21st-century beer snobs are every bit as tiresome as 20th-century wine snobs were.  Plus, the low prices bring in too many people who have nothing much to say but spew it with alcohol-fueled vigor.  Sometimes the collective odor of such folks coupled with the popularity of Bier Stein makes the air a bit dank, especially when it's warm outside.

Go - but get some fresh air and sun once in a while, would you?  Don't be one of those pasty-faced fellows who seem over-represented at the Bier Stein.

Been going to Bier Stein for many years. I'm not a big beer drinker, and I'm kind of picky about the beers I like, but Bier Stein almost always has something on tap to my liking (not to mention the almost infinite selection of bottles!). They're always happy and willing to make suggestions and give tasters. Food at the Bier Stein has remained consistently good over the years, even after their original cook/chef moved on to new opportunities. Staff is always friendly. Atmosphere is always lively. Bier Stein is a reliable choice!

One of the first things I noticed when I walked into Bier Stein is that they have the lights up fairly bright. I can be kind of a diva about lighting in bars, but here, the well-lit room works well. This isn't a bar for shouting or listening to loud music or showing off your outfit; you're here to drink some good motherfuckin' beer.

I've heard a rumor that Bier Stein never taps the same beer twice. They definitely do serve some interesting and experimental beers in addition to old standbys. On my first visit here, I was beyond delighted to find Russian River's Blind Pig IPA on draft. This is a pretty rare beer to find and though I'd had it before at Russian River in Santa Rosa, I was so happy to get to try it again. Quality. They definitely focus on west coast beers, but they do have some offerings from Colorado, etc. I've tried, and enjoyed, New Belgium's Peach Porch Lounger, 10 Barrel's American Stout, Elysian's pumpkin porter, and a Flat Tail sour ale. They also offer a huge selection of bottled beers that you can enjoy in store or take home (with a fifteen perfect discount!). I love that you can drink cheap here if you need to, without sacrificing quality, by sticking to cheap-ish bottles when your budget is tight. I was super stoked to find a bottle of one of my sweetheart's favorite beers, Lagunitas' Brown Shugga, on our most recent visit.

I can't speak to the food, yet, but I appreciate that they offer tempeh in place of meat on any of the sandwiches.

Service here is friendly, mostly. I was really excited after having a long talk with Dave about beers from my southeastern home on our first visit in (in my experience, being taken seriously as a beer enthusiast as a girl is unfortunately sort of rare), but the next time we came in, he didn't seem to remember us. Whatevs, pour me a tasty draft beer and I don't care too much about anything.

Seriously, they have walls of beer and a bar where you can order beers on tap, and a kitchen.  They've been there for 7 years, and we were told they are looking for a bigger space because they've outgrown the space they are in - people see it's really crowded and keep going (which we almost did, but thankfully changed our minds and stopped).  The beers were delicious, and we'll be back the next time we are in town.

Who doesn't love the Bier Stein?! They have about 10 beers on tap, and the selection changes constantly. The sandwiches and appetizers are delicious. We LOVE LOVE LOVE the beer cheese soup. If only we could get the recipe! It's to die for. The ambiance is really laid back. You can find just about every bottled beer here. If you take the beer to go, there's a discount.

We stopped in on a short trip to Eugene.  The selection of beer is out of this world.  I wanted to buy every Oregon beer in the cooler.  Too bad we couldn't take any on the plane! The bartender was sooo friendly and gave us suggestions on beer, food, and even attractions and breweries in Eugene and Portland.  The food was amazing.  I got the Pizzanini which had ham, pepperoni, sauteed mushrooms, onion, cheese, and homemade marinara.  It came with a side and, of course, I ordered the beer cheese soup.  It was the best beer cheese soup I have ever had.  Loved it!!!!  Make this your first stop in Eugene every time!

The Bier Stein's tuna melt wins my "best sandwich of Eugene" award. So delicious, especially with that Bread Stop ciabatta (which I wish they sold in retail stores). And a side of heavenly, thick, beery, cheesy bier-cheese soup. You won't find a better lunch sandwich in town. Top that off with nearly any kind of beer you could imagine, and you have a true winner.

    My only recommendations for improvement
    - That long, thin table? We hate sitting at it, it's like you all have to sit next to each other, no space to truly sit across from each other. And there are too few other tables, which is a problem with the Bier Stein's popularity. Couldn't you put up extra folding tables at lunch, and then remove them for late at night?
    - No Scandinavian pear ciders? :( Only English style perries.

Fix those things and you'll get a five star from me!

Lots of beverages in a college town. I'm a fan and if we're in the area, I'd love to eat here again. My husband ordered a panini and he loved it. I had the soup and salad. Not bad... Soup was clam chowder. It was good, but not as great as San Francisco. Still... This place is totally worth a visit.

I was in town with a large circus (wink wink) and I called to get some sandwhiches from the jimmy johns in springfield for our crew to eat after load out and boy were they unpleasant.  So I set out in search of somewhere else and The Bier Stein was perfect.  They took our specific order and it was great!

All of things... My top things... All of those things - in one!

    What are those things?

    1.) Beer
    2.) People
    3.) Cheese... {soup}

Yes'm, we have ourselves another Yelp find while rolling through Eugene on a random road trip.

You could tell a ton of locals come here because everyone seemed to know one another - besides us.

After bellying up to the bar & meeting some nice ladies who allowed us to squeeze in beside them, it was clear we we were going to have a great night.

The ladies were a riot & didn't mind my accidental, but frequent, shoulder brushing because it was so crammed. We cracked jokes, swapped beer suggestions and just had good ol' stranger banter.

The beer list & menu (found on the chalkboard behind the bar) had plenty of beers we weren't familiar with, which for us was quite a treat.

And the bartender was incredibly gracious and helpful and let us try samples of draft beers before we settled on a final decision.

The nail in the coffin for me: The frickin' fantastic beer cheese soup! SO, SO, SO perfect on this rainy visit.

Besides great beer, snacks and cool ass people, there's also a carryout facility where you can snag brews to-go! We noticed a lot of people coming in and out just for that reason.

Bier Stein is a sick local place that I know if I lived in town, I'd be their favorite regular.

What a terrific place to have a great beer, hundreds to choose from! Dave was incredibly knowledgeable - okay, he knew about our local Anderson Valley Brewery in Boonville, CA! Really though, he skillfully helped us navigate our choices to a couple of great local brews. The panini sandwiches were really tasty. And the atmosphere was uber casual and welcoming.

This place is a slice of Eugene.  I tell visitors this is the first place they should visit if they want a very non-corporate, non-chain, real as it gets, community, made in Eugene, local eatery.  As the name would imply, the beer is off the charts good.  They change their beer selection almost every day or every week.

Because the name of the place is called Bier Stein, the beer gets all the pub. (pun intended)  I feel the food is the most underrated part of this place.  I've taken many people who do not actually like beer to the Bier Stein just for the food alone.  I've never had anyone say the food was anything short of outstanding.

Bier Stein is by no means upscale and their menu choice does not reflect a pretentious attempt at being upscale. There isn't a single beer that isn't good, there isn't a single food item that isn't good. A brewpub doesn't have to have to be upscale get  5 stars.  So based on that criteria, 5 stars all the way.  One of the gem's of Eugene.

    Beer heaven...    =)

If you want a comfortable place to have a few beers and some good food - Bier Stein

If you want to go out with friends to do beer tastings from a certain region - Bier Stein

If you want to impress someone with a wide selection of beer from just about any region - Bier Stein

The names of the sandwiches are a hoot.  I had "Yo Mama Likes Our Sausage" sandwich.  I don't know about yo mama, but I liked their sausage, lol.  Beer cheese soup was good.  And one of the pilsners they had on tap washed it all down beautifully.

Staff was efficient and friendly.  Seating was comfortable and convenient.

The best part...   Hundreds upon hundreds of beers!  12oz, 22oz, 500ml, 750ml, 300ml, Oregon, North American, German, Czech, Polish, Scottish, French, British, Irish, Porter, Pale Ale, Pilsner, Stout, Hefeweizen, Ale, Lager, Framboise, IPA and just about every other variation I didn't list...

I travel to Eugene on occasion for work, so I have only been here during the weekdays typically early in the week. So I have never experienced this place while it has been overcrowded. With that said, the parking situation does suck... BUT it's worth it to come here. The beer selection is always stellar, the beertendars are extremely friendly and they know their stuff! Sitting at the bar, I was really surprised to see how patient they are with some of the more inexperienced beer drinkers and helping them find a beer they will like (which I am sure they become less helpful on the busy nights). The food is Very Decent for bar food and reasonably priced. While in Eugene and craving a damn good beer... this is MY choice.

Great place, amazing beer selection, good food--beer cheese soup a hit.

The parking isn't so great--why can't they fix the daytime parking situation?  There's a giant lot next to the Beer Stein that prohibits you parking during the day because it's for another building (lots of spots open there in that lot) and the BS parking only has about 8 spots behind their business?!!  Why can't the BS work out a deal with this lot?  Anyway, that's my only complaint.

If I go to Bier Stein these days it's during lunch hours. They have table service during lunch hours, so you'll spend a bit more in order to tip, but I think it's worth it knowing that I will never have to wait for a seat. I just wish I could drink more during lunch hours. :/

Anyway, it's been said here plenty of times: Bier Stein at dinner hours is a madhouse and it's every person for themselves. Lighting and general aesthetic are awful, and th only thing saving it from being really uncomfortable are the many happy, buzzed people also keeping you from any seating.

I've never had a bad night at the Bier Stein.  Some may complain about the lack of space, but I think that is one of the things that makes it great- the scene of joy when you pounce on an open table haha!

The beer selection is second to none which may seem intimidating when you first look at it, but any of the staff will drop what they are doing to help you. They always try to pair the beer with the proper glass when having it there.

As far as the food? BEER CHEESE SOUP. Enough said. My staple here is get the Goudist Panini with beer cheese on the side, and dip the sandwich into the soup- so good! As for the rest of the sandwiches, and salads they are all very well made, and always very constant (something that small pups usually struggle with) good!

Place gets packed on weekend evenings so if you want to take a group have someone go like an hour early to land a table.

Love the chicken pesto panini and beer cheese soup here!  Great prices and extensive variety of berrr.

My only gripe is that the place is so small that it can be hard to get a seat.

Yes, yes, the Bier Stein has an impressive selection of beers-- both in bottles and on rotating taps. Everyone knows that. But, jeez, what's up with the HORRIBLE overhead lighting in there? My god, it feels like a brightly-lit Walgreens. Am I picking up a prescription or trying to enjoy a drink? Would it hurt to turn down the lights a bit, fellas?

Two more quibbles: First, the Bier Stein is pretty crowded most nights, which is nice if you like the din of a raucous bar, less so if you like to have a seat.  Second, after every trip to the Bier Stein, I find that my clothes stink like greasy food. Perhaps, it's because nothing separates the kitchen from the bar. I don't know. I do know that every time I visit the Bier Stein, my clothes reek.

It's great to have a bottle shop like the Bier Stein in the neighborhood. But if you want to try some high-grade beers in a chill atmosphere, walk a couple of blocks down to 16 Tons instead.

The largest selection of bottles north of San Francisco and South of Seattle. Always 10 beers on tap including one poured on Nitro. I always find something new or interesting to try. The staff is friendly and are knowledgeable about their beer including what is going to be in stock soon.

The food from the kitchen seems ok. The pretzels are hard bar type pretzels and the chips are from a bag. The pressed sandwiches look good and there is always 2 soups to choose from. Nice for something to nom on while drinking.

The beer is the star of the show here....bottles, cans, and draft. Local, domestic, and import...if beer is your thing this is the place.

Great sandwiches, and hundreds upon hundreds of different beers to try (literally, several hundred different kinds in the beer fridge) plus a brilliantly varied, unique, rotating tap!  You Oregonians are spoiled.

Be sure to ask for a sample of the offerings if you can't decide.  Service is pub/bar style, so don't expect anything fancy - this rating is for the food and beer - but everyone was friendly and the service prompt.

Big fan of the Bier Stein. On a recent exploratory trip to Eugene I was eager to try a couple of the highly reviewed places. Travelling/visiting only men means I had to push for coffee shops or cafes and was easily brought to beer spots. Given it's Eugene and I like beer, well it wasn't so bad I suppose.

The Bier Stein has a great beer selection and a kickass sandwich menu at it's most elemental description. However, it's the service, the quality of ingredients, the creativity of the sandwiches and the beautiful fair pricing that make this an ideal spot. I started with four stars only because the ambiance is lacking on the surface but I've changed my mind and made it five stars as the ambiance clearly matches the overall business plan and that's perfect! Make sure to try the beer cheese soup - it is as good as you hear it is.

If you like beer you'll love the Bier Stein! With 10 rotating taps and more bottled beer than you can imagine this is Eugene's beer haven.
If you are new to the craft beer scene the staff is friendly and willing to help you out and give you tips along the way.
The food is awesome. Its a very basic menu done right. Fresh soup, salad and sandwiches is all they have along with a few appetizers. I will say the nachos might be a miss-they're a bit bland for my taste, but the antipasto plate is a real winner.

With a place like this how is it not a 5 star? It's small. I mean really small. You are lucky to find parking let alone a seat. There used to be a time of day when standing room only wasn't the case-but not any more. This place is awesome and it seems that all of Eugene knows it. There have been many nights where i stood with beer in hand by the coolers for two hours and didn't get a table.  They REALLY need to expand in a big way.

Tired of paying 5 or 6 dollars for a beer at  bars like The  Horse Head and Taylor's (both sides of the d-bag demographic that frequent Eugene bars)?

Look no further than Bier Stein.

Buy a bottle of beer (domestic  or import, they have a million) for 2 or 3 dollars and the bartender will give you a glass. Sit down, drink, enjoy the glory of Eugene. This place draws all demographics, including the snobby beer drinker, so don't ask the difference between a porter on tap and a porter on a nitro tap, someone will likely be offended by your ignorance.

I only take away a star because the bathroom has only 2 heads and when someone goes in and locks the door it takes forever to break the seal.

I imagine Bier Stein to be the best place in Eugene to catch a beer in the late afternoon and watch the world go by. Just be careful, many of the beers on tap have an ABV of 10% and up, meaning a couple of those on an empty stomach and you'll end up at the bus station trying to bum cigarettes acting like a local.

I used to live near Heaven...

It was called the Bier Stein...

I used to live near Heaven...

And now I don't and whine.

Fuck you, you Bier-Stein-taking-for-granted, wannabe-progressive-hick-town snobs! After working at Mezza Luna Pizza around the corner since opening day and watching the Bier Stein blossom into the beautiful flower covered in beer-dew that it is today I have so much appreciation for what The Stein is. Then, a few months after The Stein opened, I moved to 13th Alley and found myself walking by the The Stein daily. I was smiling every time.

You think it's over priced? Try living in Los Angeles, assholes. You think you can get the same beer somewhere else? Not all of it in one, convenient location. They even give a 15% discount on bottles to-go. And Market-of-Choice is not that much cheaper.

700+ varieties of beer in one location?

A dozen, rotating varieties of beer on tap?

Delicious panini sandwiches with a side salad included?

    Incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff?

Dogfish Head's Golden Showers? AND 120 minute IPA!? In the same store!?

What more could you ask for? Only in the Yooj would people complain  about Heaven.

THIS place is the saving grace of all of Eugene.

Slightly expensive bar food, but incredible selection of beers. Well over 700 to choose from, from all over the world. I almost mistook this as a little dairy market when glancing in through the window.

The atmosphere is that of a wine tasting place, so you don't get the "bar crowd" with derilicts and macho men trying to drink the city dry.

I loved their nachos, and the friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Thank you Bier Stein for saving Eugene.

The Bier Stein offers over 700 different domestic and imported beers in the bottle and ten beers on tap, which rotate on an almost-daily basis.  The servers here are among the best in town--Tod, Chip, and Louisa are great, friendly folks. Not only are they attentive servers, they're also well-trained in the classic bartender skills: listening, offering advice, wisecracking, etc. And they know everyone by name. It's kinda like Cheers  without that annoying Shelley Long.

The food offerings are limited but satisfying.  Really nice grilled sandwiches are the star. Sausages, sauerkraut, nachos, and other "bar food" round out the menu.  Special tasting dinners, paired with beers are planned for the future.

Another really nice feature is that there is no uncorking fee for bottled beer drunk on premises.  If the bottle says $2.00, that's what you pay for it.  Chip will open it for you and you can enjoy it at your table.

Finally, it's a good place for college student watching--the (truly awful) Blackjack Pizza next door draws a steady stream of penny-pinching undergrads at all hours.
