This place is a labor of love, fun and cozy decorating, owners are on the spot taking care of you, food and coffee was great! Â Both times I ate here, it was for breakfast. Such a sweet neighborhood hide-a-away. Â Dying to take hubby and try it for dinner. Â Oh and by the way, I did use the bathroom while I was there and it was fine and perfectly clean -- not sure what was going on with that "dire" bathroom reviewer! Â I would give this restaurant five stars, except I never give five as a point of principle.
Review Source:There are certain items at certain restaurants that deserve planning an entire meal around, at Blue Plate, that would be their biscuits. Always warm, flaky, and outrageously good, I frequently decide meals  specifically around whether or not I can incorporate a biscuit into my culinary experience ( hence why despite hearing great things, I've never actually tried their pancakes).
Other great items include the down-the-shore eggs Benedict, their avocado and goat cheese breakfast wrap, and vegetarian chili and corn bread.
Cozy environment, it can be a bit crazy on weekend mornings so I recommend bringing patience, and a sense of humor. It's worth the wait.
For SHU students, $1 takeaway coffee ( roasted locally in Newark) is one of the best student deals in town.
Happy dining!
Great food and quaint atmosphere! Laura and Dan who run the place are really lovely, and they know how to make simple food both interesting and delicious. My favorite is their oatmeal that's made of hearty oats and piled high with fresh fruit. Plus, their coffee is the best I've had in South Orange!
Review Source:After recently reading the"glowing" review in the Star Ledger about this place, I couldn't wait to go there. Â We went there for breakfast, I had a average tasting omelet, grits and a delicious home made biscuit. Â My husband had scrambled eggs and hash browns. Â The food and service were OK and decor was very eclectic, I would've given a rating of "3" stars. Â However, I was shocked that there is only one rest room for customers and staff which was filthy and to access it, you must go through the kitchen (where you are only a few feet from the chef). Â I only discovered this at the conclusion of my meal, otherwise I would not have eaten at the restaurant. Â Ugh....
Review Source:My office and I love blue plate! I wish they had a suggestion box for feedback though because we are avid fans and typically talk about how their already good food/service can become even better. Also, I wish that they could pack their to-go boxes better so that the food is not spilling over as much.
But I love the pulled pork, portobello burger, and $1 coffee deal for SHU students!! Â
omg the biscuits too.
I'm SO pleased to have this restaurant so near Seton Hall. Laura, the owner, is super nice and is working hard to make this a welcoming, excellent restaurant. The retro vibe and friendly service makes this an easy place to hang out. The food is lovely home cooking -- some of it heavy, but there are a few light options. I love that the tea is served in pots! And everything is for sale -- from the dishes to the paintings on the wall. Great fun! Welcome to the neighborhood, Laura and company. I look forward to many work breakfasts and lunches with you!
Review Source:Bring the kids! I was on the quest for somewhere besides the same ol' boring NJ diner for breakfast-- and boy did I find it! Staff are every bit as kind as they are accommodating. The restaurant has toys galore to keep the little ones busy as the
owner/chefs cook up some amazing creations behind the curtain. I had an omelette with egg whites and veggies with homemade biscuit. The veggie omelette came with zucchini and was sprinkled with rosemary- so creative and so-deelish!!! Tops in my book! We will be back soon!
I went for breakfast and found the owner behind the counter, the stove and just about doing everything. The atmosphere is very secondhand sale: "Everything in the store is for sale." said the owner.
I order scrambled eggs and bacon which came with a gigantic homemade biscuit and homefrys. The eggs were cooked to my liking and the biscuit was heavenly (especially after I was able to locate some jam for it) but, the homefrys were over peppered and the bacon seemed deep fried. Good coffee though and I hope it is successful I really like these types of local spots. BTW: lunch and dinner are also served here.
