I was in the neighborhood around lunchtime today, so I dropped by Bocata. Â I'd always meant to, but given a choice between The Rock - which I knew - and Bocata - which I didn't - I always chose The Rock. Â The Rock's moved, and gyros sounded good, so I dropped in.
It wasn't busy at all at 11:30 am, but some people went in and out. Â They had feta cheese, which is a plus - not every gyro place in town has it. Â The portions were very generous, and the fries came in a little styrofoam cup, but it wasn't anything spectacular. Â The gyro meat was either dry or over-grilled, and neither it nor the feta had as strong a flavor I was hoping for.
Still, it wasn't bad, and I'll have no problems going back if I'm on that end of town. Â It's just not my first choice for gyros, and I probably won't make the cross-town trip from work just to eat there.
Though they've recently made the menu a little sparser (no more tacos), I still like this place. Since the departure of The Rock, I feel like I crave that hot dog-gyro-Italian beef taste more than ever, so thank goodness for Bocata.
Basically, the typical gyro place, including Chicago-style hot dogs and Italian sausage sandwiches. All the combos come with a healthy serving of fries, and the cheese cup definitely rounds out an already delicious meal. Between $5-8 for each combo meal.
You might have to wait a few minutes for your food, but that's only because they make it fresh (and who doesn't love fresh made fries??) The only downside would be that they're not open later (especially on the weekends.) At least the guys behind the counter are always nice!
