Interesting location. The food and drinks are ok but pricey.

This is the Short Hills train station! Pretty neat setting, especially if you like trains. Though if you are sitting inside, you don't hear the trains much. My first time here, I picked it only because it was open late & our group met at 9 pm on a weeknight. Turns out the kitchen closes at 10 pm, but the bar stays open till 12.30 am. Service started off spotty, and I feared the worst, especially with out of town guests with us - but they picked up their game - we ordered buffalo wings on the waiter's recommendation & they were very good. Our French guests ordered their steaks done rare, and 2 of us ordered the Boxcar burger. All the food was good, steaks done just so, & the burger and fries were executed very well. WIth multiple rounds of drinks, and with dessert & coffee, it came out to just over $40 per person, a very good value. What the place needs most is a good maitre 'd.

The service was not good at all and the food was really lacking.  They were very unenthusiastic and didn't even include parts of the dishes that were described on the menu.  We have eaten here multiple times and it has always been decent.  However, this recent visit was simply embarrassing.

The bar set-up is beautiful! I loved the suspended light fixtures and the exposed brick on the walls. It's pretty charming how this restaurant is still a working train station. A few trains apparently passed by during our meal, but I didn't notice at all.

Our waitress was mixing drinks for the first time and she did a great job with our sangrias.

We shared the nachos and the baby back ribs with a side of roasted brussels sprouts. The nachos were generously portioned - it seemed like it's really meant to be an appetizer for about 3-4 people. The baby back ribs came with a side of kale slaw as well, which was fantastic. I would seriously consider returning just for some of that slaw. The roasted brussels sprouts were great - they're my newest food obsession and I've been ordering them whenever I can.

The ribs were alright - the BF mentioned that they tasted like they had been boiled rather than slow-roasted, which was a bit of a bummer.

Came here on a random weeknight after work to check it out.  It was really a train station converted to bar restaurant. Nice ambience but no one was really there.  Food was decent. Had the hamburger but it was small.  Fries were good but Mac and cheese I could pass on.  The place is in the middle of nowhere. Got lost.

The atmosphere is welcoming but during the winter months, cold.  It seems that the train station turned into a restaurant has high ceilings that may prevent the room from staying warm on a late saturday evening.

Although the food was good, the service was poor.  Our burgers were served at separate times (one burger was brought out with cheese when the menu did not state it was a burger with mushrooms, onions AND cheese) and our two orders of french fries arrived AFTER our meals were finished.   There was no follow up with a manager and although the server realized his mistake he blamed it all on a "new" kitchen.   I believe this restaurant has been open for a while.

It was an actual train station, reusing the space including the benches. Bar is separated from dining area though by kitchen, restrooms and the ticket counter! I went on a weeknight, with live music at the bar.

Good beer selection- better than most in the area. Good food - everyone's dishes were executed well. Good burgers too.

Had a very pleasant pre-New Year's Eve Sunday night dinner here.  The station has been nicely restored. The tables are well-spaced.  The menu and wine list are interesting enough.  Service was pleasant and efficient.  The food. a shared starter of chicken quesadillas and then burgers, rose way above the pedestrian.  They were, in fact, very good.  Had a glass of a very nice petite syrah to wash it all down.  Would absolutely return.

Went for the first time last night and really liked the atmosphere. Delicious food, and the manager was great and attentive coming by to check if everything was ok. The drinks menu really excited us, but the execution was sadly poor. One or two ingredients were missing from both drinks, but maybe it was an off night. I'd def return for the food and would give the drinks another go to see if they get better.

The ambience is unique, the cocktails are well crafted, and the service friendly though a bit disorganized. A great place to go for a drink. The food, however, is overpriced, small portioned, and mediocre. Al a carte fries (which were really good actually) to add onto a $9 burger that is just so so and tiny?

Boxcar is awesome. It has so many things about it that could have made it really pretentious, but they just did everything so well that's it's not.

First off, the decor and ambiance is fabulous. The idea of taking the train station and ticketing area and turning it into a restaurant is creative and it's honestly done so well. It's surprisingly classy, yet at the same time casual and still trendy. It's also perfect for people waiting for the train and want to grab a quick drink, as well as people who are around town and want a sit-down meal.

Next, the food! Ah, I was truly surprised. Again, it didn't seem like the type of place to have excellent food, but I was proven to be wrong. The food was awesome! I had the brick oven Buffalo Chicken pizza, and it was fantastic. I was really impressed with the flavor and how well it all the different ingredients seemed to compliment one another. And on the "food" note, they have a really solid drink menu as well (give the Franziskaner Hefeweizen a shot if you're looking for a new beer to try).

Finally, I was really impressed with the service. Our server was attentive and aware of our needs. We were near the door in November, so we were quite cold, but he moved us to another table, no questions asked. He was also extremely friendly and welcoming.

Of course, I'm never one to leave out any downsides, no matter how excellent Boxcar was otherwise... being next to the train tracks when you come for a sit-down meal can be distracting, as when the train comes, the place will rumble a bit. Then again, that obviously comes with the territory, so I wouldn't be terribly concerned. Give them a try and find out for yourself!

I went to the Boxcar a couple of times went it first opened.   I loved the concept and the vibe of the place.   Awesome spot to go for drinks.   City-vibe in the burbs.  However, the food was spotty and the service was inconsistent.   I didn't go back for a while.

I've recently been back 3 times and whatever issues they may have had when they first opened they have sorted out.   The menu has changed with a better variety.  The food has been spot on each time I went.   I'm a big fan of the burger (simple and inexpensive), but my favorite dish is the chicken.   Usually chicken is the last thing i want to order, but it's the best thing i've tried there so far.

Live music on Wednesday nights is a must.   Usually an acoustic band playing cover songs.   Great atmosphere, while still being able to hear the person you are talking to.  The staff is much friendlier and attentive then when they first opened as well.

All-in-all, it's my new favorite place in the area.  A great place to meet up with friends.

It's a tiny little place, with a creative & tasty menu and great drinks. I loved the ambiance with the movies projected on the wall & great background music. I knew I'd like the place when the first song I heard after arriving was "Breakdown" by Jack Johnson (actually the Handsome Boy Modeling School remix version) - amusing choice in a train station bar! I will definitely return!!

Indifferent, unprofessional service.  After 20 minutes we had to flag down a waiter to take our order. Waiter stuck his hand in bowl of olives to put one in our drink.  Another waiter asked, "Is anyone here done yet?'.  We had been there for 45 minutes at the time.  He also attempted to remove food before we had finished.  And the food...at best, a mediocre burger served on a soggy bun.  You pay extra for lettuce and tomato, which consists of about 12 pieces of narrowly shredded lettuce and a slice of tomato.  It is unappetizing presented. Too bad...very cool atmosphere. Great potential.

First time at Boxcar Bar & Grill.  We sat outside.  Bar was way too noisy for eating at 10 on a Friday.  A little annoyed to have some small kids running around at 10 on a Friday.  Seriously, if you can't get a baby sitter stay home!  The food was good.  I had the burger and fries which were prepared perfectly.  Fries tasted like Belgian fries (bravo).  My Wife had the Morroccan salmon which was good but did not taste Morroccan.  Service was mixed.  Long time for drinks and then food came a minute later.  Still i'd go back again.

    Loved it.

We opted for outdoor seating which was perfect for a summer night. The inside has two dining areas and both looked nice. Very nice adaptive reuse of an old train station. (Dark wood mixed with exposed brick and modern updates.)

Service was friendly and funny and continued to be attentive throughout our meal. Very nice staff at every turn.

We ordered burgers: and I can't wait to go back for more. One of the best burgers I've had in years. Next time im ordering the double burger. Yeah - it was THAT good.

Regular cheeseburger was about $8.00 and about $5.00 for a beer.

    Can't wait to go back!

WHO FREAKIN' KNEW!?!  The Short Hills Train Station turns into a bar/restaurant at night!?!  I'm so glad a friend turned me onto this place...
I went only for drinks but can't wait to return again for dinner - the menu and other reviews seriously look spectacular!
Let me talk about what I can actually vouch for:  bomb-ass drinks and a super-friendly staff!  Went there late on a Saturday night - certainly NOT their busiest night of the week.  Immediately was greeted by this really nice college aged guy that worked there.  As he welcomed us and took note of our amazement from the transformed train station by day to bar and grill by night, he led us on a tour with his iPad, walking us through each of the sections of the restaurant then showing us before and after pix.  Kudos to the design team that made this place look incredible!
So, post-tour, we were introduced to the bartender who made us a few awesome concoctions!!  A Moscow-Mule for me and a Bellini for my friend!  Wowsers...who makes fresh ginger beer nowadays?  Usually when I have this drink, it's with something from a bottle, but the authentic versions I've had in NYC are all twice the price!  NOT $8 bucks!  Same for the Bellini...I have tasted Bellinis all over the world and I promise you this one measures all the way up to Harry's Bar quality and authenticity!  Granted they put a spin on it with passion fruit juice rather than peach puree, but I DIE for anything passion-fruit-related soo... I take back the "authentic" comment and we'll just call it what it is:  AMAZEBALLS!

The Boxcar is the "happening" spot in Millburn/Short Hills area. Great food at reasonable prices. Bar scene is smart, well dressed and fun. Order a Moscow Mule with a burger and side of grits. Best in class in New Jersey. A destination in and off itself that must be seen. See you there.

One of the best food we have had in a very long time. A very well created menu by Executive Chef Ethan a fantastic edition to the culinary world.
We indulged ourselves in a variety of appetizers and main course and they were made "Taste to Perfection".Desserts in a mason jar was a great idea as being nostalgic looking but with contemporary twist.

Complementing to great meal was well decorated decor which preserved the train stations history while adding modern look.

Nice place, service was good.  Burgers were a disappointment, small patty, only American and Swiss cheese.  Fries too salty.  Pizza ok, could use more flavor.  Hummus and crab dip really good.  Loved the kale side.

How excited I was when this place opened. A great location (Short Hills Train Station) and they built an awesome atmosphere. Especially for a drink. It's new and I haven't tried many menu items. Food wasn't awesome, but i think its matches the target for casual dining in taste and price. I will certainly return and become a regular.
